Thank you!

I must admit, I was a bit annoyed when you initiated the discussion about File:Epsilon15likevirus_EM.jpg. I thought it was perfectly clear that this image was "implicitliy included" in the release. Yet it turned out that the customer was not in a position to give the release, and still has to find out himself if and why he was entitled to publish the image on his website. So you were absolutely right, and I thank you very much for your diligence and accuracy. Cheers, Mussklprozz (talk) 10:29, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

@Mussklprozz, thank you, nonetheless, for sending a follow-up email on VRT and getting the issue clarified. ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:15, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

VRT assistance

Hello @TheAafi, I hope you're doing well. Can you spare few moments to check the permission received for the files upload by ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੰਗੀਤਕਾਰ. I assume their upload to be copyvio, just want to be sure before tagging. Also would like to know the criteria to be part of the VRT team. Hope to get a response soon. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 15:35, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

@C1K98V: None of the permissions are valid. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:42, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response. Will tag the files for deletion. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 04:57, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
@C1K98V, you do not need to mark the pages for deletion. If a permission is not received within 30 days from the last response of a VRT agent, a file gets deleted. ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:16, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for correcting me. I also meant the same. C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 10:21, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello, please provide an update on this file. The file is still in queue 𝕃𝐖 (talk) 06:35, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

@LifetimeWiki, once a VRT agent approves the permission, they will themselves add a relevant template on the file page. Please stay calm. ─ The Aafī (talk) 08:02, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
@The Aafī, hello, one week passed & still in queue, my past experience with VRT request is generally fast, are they received my mail reply? Please check. 𝕃𝐖 (talk) 13:27, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi @LifetimeWiki, VRT tickets are responded and handled by volunteer editors and that is why this is called a "Volunteer Response Team". Each and every agent takes care of tickets that might interest them. To demand quick responses from these unpaid volunteers is not something that Wikimedia contributors should advocate for. Please stay calm and let the VRT agents handle this ticket timely. Nonetheless, please clarify if you are sending permission-releases for the images that you have captured yourselves? If so, it is not a very good idea. ─ The Aafī (talk) 15:08, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
@The Aafī, Thanks for adding permission. I haven't captured the image but the person who click the photo send the permission request & clarify the copyright status, I'm just the uploader. I always believe to upload images with proper licence and permission. 𝕃𝐖 (talk) 19:52, 11 May 2023 (UTC) & age

Ticket#2023050710006091

Could you please take a look at this ticket and tell me why it's insufficient? The answer i got from VRT was too vague for me to understand Trade (talk) 16:16, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

@Trade, it is too early to judge the ticket. However, fwiw, forwarded permissions have been shared on the ticket which we do not accept generally, and the ticket awaits an agent's response. It will be taken care of. Best, ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 16:26, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
Mind telling me why it's too early and what "forwarded permission" means? Trade (talk) 16:27, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
@Trade, forwarded permission means: me telling you on email or elsewhere that it is okay that you upload my work under so and so license and you send the screenshot to the permissions as a proof that the file is free. VRT does not accept permissions in that way. Secondly, this ticket was created on 7 May, first response went on the same day. The email initiator responded on 11 May, just few days ago. Since the ticket is not even ten days old (or at least a month imo), that's why I called it to early to judge it. I hope this makes some sense. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 16:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
screenshot or even a forwarded email response. Both count same. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 16:31, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

VRT and innocent-looking but potentially sensible information

I am a bit worried about the discussion on the VRT noticeboard, such as in Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard#ticket:2021092410009524. The VRT correspondence is supposed to be confidential. Still you discuss the email addresses used. I think I remember earlier instances where I think you have disclosed too much about VRT correspondence. Even info that seems innocent could connect a secret identity to the public identity or otherwise indirectly disclose things the correspondent wouldn't want to have disclosed.

I think you should always think twice before posting info from VRT correspondence on a public forum: is it necessary to publish this info and is the specific info intended to be public? I suppose you have a private VRT forum where a ticket can be discussed.

LPfi (talk) 09:06, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Dear @LPfi, I am very much happy for this friendly advice and reminder about some possible errors that I have made. I'd be happy if you privately share other instances with me so that I review all of those instances. I make sure that I do not go into too much details when responding but at the same time I am not sure if this is too much from among my responses or just a few cases where there's some semi-private info made public? I thought I was mentioning the stuff that was already public but there's some substance in your advice. Thank you again. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 09:33, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
I am not too concerned about the individual cases, and I don't remember them, but when reading the thread today I thought a remark was due. There was nothing obviously private, but details that might reveal something when added to previous knowledge. In this case I assume the person has no desire to be anonymous, but I also assume that we cannot know whether some of this information could be sensible. I don't know any of these cases from elsewhere, so the information that made me uncomfortable might very well be public, it just didn't seem likely. –LPfi (talk) 15:25, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Translation review

Hey there!

Would you mind taking a quick look at this page and see if I've done everything alright in regard to translation? Maybe I've added more tags than needed? Maybe something is missing? - Klein Muçi (talk) 08:37, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

@Klein Muçi, Awesome work, and much better than what I was expecting. I have added some tvars on links and added some extra translate tags for convenience. I always make sure that I keep the translation anatomy of the page in a way that makes its translation convenient for translators. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 09:56, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the good words! :D Can you explain to me in one sentence what tvars serve for? — Klein Muçi (talk) 13:08, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
Also if you check the English translation, 4 new units are there (the footer basically). Which normally shouldn't be there? — Klein Muçi (talk) 13:13, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

Translation review

Hello! As it has become common now, can you check that the translation I've done on our latest campaign is done correctly? Commons:Wiki Loves Earth in Albania & Kosovo 2023

It is 90% copied from the old campaigns you've checked so there shouldn't be any large errors but given that it has a lot of subpages, links and categories, it is good to double/triple check. The Albanian versions though are not working as expected (as you'll be able to immediately see for yourself when you switch to "shqip" on any page). Not really sure why... - Klein Muçi (talk) 09:25, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

@Klein Muçi, I have fixed it. This appears to be due to the placement of onlyinclude tag, I have changed it to noinclude for the categories and languages bar. It has worked well. I haven't reviewed anything else. ─ The Aafī (talk) 09:43, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
Oh... Thank you! Were the other pages in the English version correct in general? Also, 2 subpages appear to have only 1 form, as in one language only. The one showcasing photos and the one for the jury. What may be going on with them? — Klein Muçi (talk) 00:52, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
I was able to fix those 2 pages as well. Changed onlyinclude to noinclude like you did with the category header and changed the page information from en to sq to those 2 pages, like I had done with every other subpage. Now no visible problems remain. It was due to the work you did with the tags that I was able to fix the final problem (by replicating it) so thank you for that! — Klein Muçi (talk) 23:09, 28 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello @TheAafi, I hope you're doing well. Can you check the permission status of File:Palak Purswani.jpg. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 11:44, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

@C1K98V, The ticket currently awaits a response from the person who sent the permissions. Best regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:19, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
@TheAafi, who is looking/working after the ticket. Since when the ticket is awaiting an response. Is there a way to seek an response from the permission sender person if its more than few days or week. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 13:29, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
@C1K98V, We do not generally keep tickets open after having them closed. The default is that a ticket is closed once a VRT agent responds to it. This ticket was responded to on 26 June 2023, and if VRT does not receive any clarification until 26 July, this file will be deleted. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:23, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Ticket #2023010610006134.

Does this ticket cover all works by the artist or just a single work? Abzeronow (talk) 02:01, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

@Abzeronow is not limited to a single work. ─ The Aafī (talk) 12:42, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, can you add VRT permission template to File:Estonia (80).jpg and File:Estonia (81).jpg? Abzeronow (talk) 16:08, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow, I am sorry for missing some parts. I just noticed that a response from VRT agent mentioned only following files with a text that translates to, "We are currently talking about the following photos here".
There are no other files linked except a text that translates to "I give permission to use on Wikipedia, including article, photos from my work....., under the Wikimedia Commons CC by-SA 4.0 license, which gives an indication that the author does not make a single mention of anything. Given this, I feel we should get an updated permission about any new files that have been uploaded. ─ The Aafī (talk) 16:18, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
I am sorry for missing this earlier. It was unintentional. ─ The Aafī (talk) 16:20, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Estonia (80) is the same artwork as in File:Supilinnas.jpg (EDIT: Estonia (81) is the same artwork as File:Marjatnelektrikilp.jpg Abzeronow (talk) 16:22, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow, thanks for looking out on that. In that case, these files don't need a permissions tag. A simple {{Other versions}} should suffice. ─ The Aafī (talk) 16:33, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Ah, I didn't see that. Sorry! —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:21, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi! We are adding a couple of new pages to the FP gallery, and that means altering the Template:Commons FP galleries. I noticed that you have taken care of the translate markings on that page. Thank you! I'm not very familiar with the coding that goes with this, so could you please check my edits so I haven't messed up the translation thing too badly. All the best, --Cart (talk) 10:18, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @W.carter, thanks for the message. The only error I see is that you have changed translation unit marker numbers. These should not be changed. If you update a text or a link that's next to the marker number, the number remains the same unless you entirely remove the entire unit. You also do not manually assign new marker numbers. These are assigned by the Translate Extension. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:21, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the fast feedback. I'll see if I can fix my mistake. This part is new to me. Hope I can fix it, but would you please correct if I can't manage. --Cart (talk) 10:25, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
And now I see you've already fixed that. Many thanks! --Cart (talk) 10:28, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
No, this is not fixed. I restored it to previous version. There was some weird error that happened due to changing of the translation unit marker numbers. We need to add the stuff that added recently but without any t-unit numbers. I will take care of it. ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:31, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
@W.carter: Can you add the links/texts you added earlier but without changing any markup numbers, or issuing any new numbers on your own. You can enclose the caption in between the translate tags? ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:35, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
even if you move an entire group/list upwards/downwards, don't change any t-unit marker number. Copy/Move it along. ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:36, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Will do, a clean slate is always best when an idiot stumbles in. ;-) Sorry to bother you like this, but I'm very grateful for your help, and I've learned something new now. --Cart (talk) 10:39, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Perfect. I added two entries (based on what you had edited previously) in the list nine. This should give some more direction about how you add new entries in translatable pages. ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:44, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Well, that didn't come out totally right. Now the new pages are in the wrong group. Let's go back to the original and I'll add things without doing anything to the translate tags. The problem is that one of the groups should be in a list with a new group heading. --Cart (talk) 10:51, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
You can add a new group/ including a list adjacent to it, and move the entries to that one. This should work. You can either create a group/list 12 at the end, and move the content entirely to lists they correctly belong. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:54, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
I'll give it a try. Just move things and not touch any translate numbers. GRoup 11 should get a new name and be moved up the list with two new items in the list. I'll do it in two steps, so you can see what I'm doing. --Cart (talk) 10:57, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Cool. You can do that. Names can be changed/modified, and any unit could be moved up/down. The only thing that ruins the anatomy of a translatable page is when we mistakenly mess with t-unit marker numbers. If it was just that you had issued some new numbers, it would have been a minutes' task to fix this. Some unit numbers were changed and some new were changed alongside the up/down of some entries and inclusion of some others, I'm sorry I couldn't work much on this. But you're right, undoing what brought the error and re-doing it correctly is the best option that we have. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 11:04, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Did it work this time? Just adding the new and then moving them up the list. --Cart (talk) 11:25, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Perfect and very well. Thanks. I have marked it for translation. ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:28, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Phew! Thanks for this "crash course" in translation tags. You are a good teacher. ;-) --Cart (talk) 11:34, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Question

Hello, Even though I placed the photo here, I thought it would be useful to receive the permission message from the photo owner. Michael is a photographer. Thats why he sent the message. The photo was uploaded here for the first time. It was shot on the movie set. What exactly should I do to get the permission? File:Britta KEILS.jpg 188.253.230.182 16:01, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Copyright generally remains with the photographer. In this case, we have received permissions from them. You don't need to do anything else. The image is perfectly fine. ─ The Aafī (talk) 16:03, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Your revert

Hi TheAafi, you've reverted my use of {{Copyvio}} with the rationale not an exact copyright violation albeit the file was previously published on Instagram. The file here has full meta-data and indicates it has been uploaded in high resolution. Please do not do this again. For {{Copyvio}} a proof of a copyright violation is sufficient, we do not need to provide link to the exact image that have been uploaded. {{No permission}} as suggested by you is justified if source and authorship appear to have been properly given. Cases of {{Own}} rarely fall into this category. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 14:10, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@AFBorchert, I take your point and agree with everything you said but I'm not satisfied that this image falls into the category of copyright violation. What made me revert your {{Copyvio}} tag is the full metadata and the image quality. I'd have not reverted it if there was such clear indication of copyright violation such as what we have on File:طلای لیگ جهانی ترکیه.jpg. I'd love to hear from you on this. Doesn't the availability of meta-data (including Camera name and model) suggest anything? ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:22, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi TheAafi, full availability of meta data and the fact that this was also uploaded by the depicted person on Instagram makes it likely that the uploader is close to the depicted person (or even identical to the depicted person). But this is still a copyright violation even if the uploader has been in contact with the photographer. The least the uploader could do is honesty. And if there is no honesty or care about copyright, I consider it appropriate to speedy this even if it is not unlikely for the uploader to obtain a permission. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 14:48, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

The file has a VRT permission template that was added by a non-VRT member. Is the ticket relevant to the file? Abzeronow (talk) 19:34, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Also File:Milos Jovanovic, Serbian politician (cropped).jpg Abzeronow (talk) 19:35, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Abzeronow: This is a cropped version of File:Milica Djurdjevic-mc.rs.jpg and permissions should be fine. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:35, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Give me a minute, and I will check with the politician's file. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:36, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
OK, I restored the license for the first. Abzeronow (talk) 19:42, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
So the thing is that ticket:2012011710005331 appears to a confirmative agreement between mc.rs and Wikipedia Community. It includes a signed document that releases all of the media available on the website under Creative Commons Attribution- ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, so the ticket applies to the politician's image as well. Best regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:48, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
OK, thanks, restored license on the second one too. Abzeronow (talk) 19:51, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Aafi, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Message

You need to be civil and stop disrupting Commons, the way you did at their talk page. If anyone makes a mistake, they should be calmly asked about it. If you cause disruptions and issue vile abuses, you will certainly be blocked. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:12, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

I just joined so I didn't know how to do it and had to work very hard manually, but he abused his power to erase all my efforts without giving any reason. He couldn't even speak Vietnamese but asked me to use words he didn't understand. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hhahoaldg2 (talk • contribs) 19:13, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

  • I apologize in advance to say this, suppose you are a foreigner but don't know about Muslim culture, so when you come to Iraq, do you dare to order pork or not? Likewise, he keeps deleting my contributions just because he doesn't understand Vietnamese culture, so can wikipedia protect people like me, or will I be blocked just because the admin is ignorant? So they don't like anyone who knows more than them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hhahoaldg2 (talk • contribs) 19:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Since I don't want to be associated with him (actually you would be the same if you saw someone who couldn't read their native language but loved to discuss it), I didn't want to dig up thousands of errors from his knowledge. But this time I couldn't stay silent anymore, as he deliberately attacked me in a dirty way (sorry, I don't see any more precise words). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hhahoaldg2 (talk • contribs) 19:26, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
  • I respectfully request that you return all contents of "People wearing conical straw hats in Vietnam" to "Nón tơi". It's my own effort and it's completely handmade. You shouldn't defend someone who doesn't know Vietnamese language and doesn't even know how to listen to what's right. "Nón tơi" is a symbolic object of Vietnamese culture, you cannot delete it for no reason like that. If I did the same to the British crown now, would you accept it? (Hhahoaldg2 (talk) 20:41, 20 January 2024 (UTC))
  • Before, I asked him to argue properly more than once, but he only reported to Wiki that I insulted him and did not let me contribute to his articles that insulted Vietnamese culture. He even deleted all the posts containing the word "Annam" because he thought it was blasphemous, when in fact my ancestors had been using it as a pride for a thousand years. So, do you think I should continue to argue with someone like that? (Hhahoaldg2 (talk) 20:45, 20 January 2024 (UTC))

noinclude and onlyinclude

Hi Aafi, thank you for your work as translator administrator!

First of all, sorry for the change I just did to to "Seasons by administrative division" master page, I didn't see that you already had processed that page and wanted to do this minor improvement...

Then, I wanted to ask, if I use "onlyinclude" to mark the parts of a template relevant when it is included, I don't have to mark the rest of the template with "noinclude", do I?

Thanks, --Reinhard Müller (talk) 12:35, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Picture

Hello. Can you please delete my picture? :) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sebastian_me.jpg Sebastian 1999 (talk) 02:52, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Sebastian 1999: Files are deleted at an uploaders request only within 7 days of the upload (COM:CSD#G7). I have created a DR and this photo should be deleted by community consensus. You can also have a say on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sebastian me.jpg. I'd have loved to act on the courtesy deletion request but I thought it was better to do this in a regular & procedural manner. Regards, Aafi (talk) 02:58, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
I don't want there to be any discussion about deleting this file. There is no reason for that. The picture is mine and I just want it deleted. There is no need for discussion. I don't want to have a discussion about deletion, which is why I added Speedy Delete beforehand. --Sebastian 1999 (talk) 03:05, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
@Sebastian 1999 I understand. I will leave a comment for other admins and leave the decision to them. Regards, Aafi (talk) 03:10, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Goldmedaille Rolf Lukaschewski

Hi, Aafi. I don't see any links to the now deleted File:Goldmedaille Rolf Lukaschewski I.jpg and File:Goldmedaille Rolf Lukaschewski II.jpg. Could the uploader have been Morsmusel1975? If not, who was the uploader? Best, Sam Sailor 05:29, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

@Sam Sailor: Both the files were uploaded by Morsmusel1975. Regards, Aafi (talk) 06:43, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Aafi. Sam Sailor 06:57, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
On reflection, why was Morsmusel1975 not notified on their talk page about any perceived issues with the files? Sam Sailor 07:01, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
I usually mass delete the files, assuming that the editor who tagged the files with no permission, would have notified the uploader. The script also usually drops an automated notification. I'll check with the logs for these specific files, and undelete them for a given period (per this) and also instruct the editor who tagged, to issue notifications in future. Once I'm on my system, I'll drop an update. ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 08:03, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
@Sam Sailor: I restored both the files, tagged them again appropriately, notified the uploader, and also posted an advise on the talk page of Känguru1890 who had tagged the files with no permission. Regards, Aafi (talk) 10:01, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
But why are they restored with the {{Npd}} tags when they are own works uploaded under CC BY-SA? Sam Sailor 16:21, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
the underlying art? Isn't it a derivative work? Regards, Aafi (talk) 16:22, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

My assumption is it isn't copyrighted, but it is hard to prove a negative, and the burden lies with the tagger. Considering the facts that tagger, (a) has a short tenure, (b) is unfamiliar with due process (notifying uploader), and (c) had to ask for advice at Project:Forum/Archiv/2024/April#Umgang mit vermuteten URV, and was told by another admin that {{No permission since}} is for clear cases, I think this is a case of over-eager tagging. The case is not clear. Best, Sam Sailor 17:45, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Malaysian royalty photos

Hi Aafi, I noticed you just deleted File:Official Portrait of Tunku Azizah as Raja Permaisuri Agong.jpg. Would the same situation apply for File:Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, 2019 official portrait.jpg and File:Sultan Abdullah, 2019 official portrait.jpg? They are tagged as PD but I don't see them meeting the criteria. I vaguely recall being involved with Malaysian royalty image deletions before too, but not well enough to remember any details. Thanks, CMD (talk) 14:09, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

@CMD, the cases are different. The deleted file was attributed to unknown author and sourced to Jabatan Penerangan Malaysia, and tagged as {{Cc-zero}} and thus required permissions release. The two images you ask about are a Government work, as indicated on the file pages. Regards, Aafi (talk) 14:34, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
That seems to be the same source, Jabatan Penerangan Malaysia is the Information Department. CMD (talk) 14:38, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
In that case, I believe, {{PD-Malaysia}} says, "Works by the government, governmental organisations and international organisations are subject to copyright for 50 years after publication: sections 11 and 23." The files being in PD is subject to question. Regards, Aafi (talk) 14:53, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
That's my thought, point 23. I do wonder if the monarchies are considered part of the government, and if copyright of their official portraits may lie with them, but either way, not PD. Sensible to open a DR? CMD (talk) 15:15, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
Just found Commons:Deletion requests/File:Tun Hussein Onn potrait (cropped).jpg, may wait for that to close. CMD (talk) 15:27, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
Yes, a DR is a way to go. Thanks for the link. Closed it and a few related DRs. Regards, Aafi (talk) 15:32, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Completing deletion requests

Deaar Aafi, When deleting an image, the deletion request is normally completed at the request page. Is there a reason for not doing that at File:Kijker van Kletter2.jpg and File:Zoetermeer kunstwerk schaal 1-4.jpg? -- best regards, Vysotsky (talk) 10:29, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

I didn't realise there were open DRs for these images (which I surely missed). I'll be extra vigilant in the future, and revert my deletions to allow the DRs run their course. Thanks for dropping in a message here. ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:33, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
@Vysotsky, and this is because {{No permission since}} (speedy deletion tag) existed on both the files, which I have removed now. ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:38, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

ticket:2024092410003588

Dear Aafi, I'm writing to address a recent issue involving a photo that was mistakenly removed from Wikimedia Commons out of concern for its license: File:Virginio Simonelli shot by Marco Melfi.jpg. It is a photo of Italian singer-songwriter Virginio Simonelli shot by the Italian photographer Marco Melfi, and also uploaded on Wikimedia by Marco himself.

I've been updating Virginio's Wikipedia for many years, as a fan. One day, I complimented Marco Melfi on a photoshoot he did of Virginio and I mentioned that his Wikipedia page has a very old picture, the one that appears now on the page. Marco saw that very low quality photo, and disliked it so much that he offered to upload one of his photos as replacement. He considered it a homage, and he did so immediately. After that, I happily used his beautiful photo on Virginio's Wiki page. Despite Marco flagging the file as 'his own work', it still got tagged as missing permission by Gbawden, back on September 25th. I hadn't noticed that, but Marco immediately contacted me for help, because when user Gbawden did that, Marco received an automatic mail from Wikimedia that asked him to confirm his identity by sending a mail to the OTRS/VRT-volunteers. I told him he should send the email and then wait for your reply. Now on the file page I've seen that there is a warning, about the e-mail not having sufficient info to get the photo's license verified. I would like to know what was the problem in Marco's e-mail, so I can explain to him in Italian what he should write in a new one. Marco only speaks job-related intermediate English and does not understand the full Wikipedia system, and that is why I imagine he wrote an email not having enough info, so I'm trying to help him figure it out. It's a shame to lose such a beautiful photo. Thanks for the cooperation! Ravenlions (talk) 17:47, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Ravenlions, I'm currently not on the system so I won't be able to check the ticket. However I have a few observations:
  1. We'd need a VRT permission release from the photographer, not from subject.
  2. As copyright is usually held by the photographer. Here, Marco is the subject of the image. So very unlikely that he is the photographer himself/or owns the rights over copyright.
  3. If the subject claims to be the copyrights owner (as it appears here), they'd need to support their claim with a declaration (or similar) or an agreement they might've had with the photographer on the transfer of the copyright.
  4. Or a simple way would be, to engage the photographer in the email, and ask them to send the release.
If they help the VRT volunteers with this, the permissions would be approved. Let me know if there's something else I can help with. Kind regards, ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 18:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
Wait, I think you misunderstood. Marco is the photographer. Not the subject of the photo. And Marco uploaded the photo and sent you guys the email. Ravenlions (talk) 19:21, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
@Ravenlions: I'm sorry. I was close to sleeping and took the message in another context. I just had a look at the ticket. In the previous responses it was asked that the permission needs to be explict: like mention of the license under which the they release the image. It was responded with "Buongiorno, Confermo che la foto in oggetto “Virginio Simonelli” è di mia proprietà e cedo gratuitamente i diritti per l’utilizzo." - which per Google Translate for me, is entirely make it PD, as I don't know this language, I can't comment if the element I'm looking at is missing/there and would leave it to other VRT agents, but it appears fine to me. Can you help interpret this statement, as in response to, "For images to be hosted on Wikimedia Commons, they require the copyright holder to provide a release under a specific free license (such as the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0), which allows anyone to use them for any purpose, including commercial usage and derivative works." If you can help here, I can drop a note in the ticket. Regards, Aafi (talk) 06:05, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
No problem! And yes, I think I can help. Here's a breakdown of what Marco's Italian response means: "Good morning, I confirm that the photo in question “Virginio Simonelli” is my property and I freely grant the rights for its use." the 'freely' could also be translated as 'free of charge', so he wanted to say he is the copyright holder and is willing to allow others to use the photo as they wish without having to pay for a license. He did not mention the public domain, but I think it is understandable that he meant that. If you look at the file's page, indeed, the license that Marco first flagged when he uploaded the file was "Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication." Thanks for the help! Ravenlions (talk) 14:21, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Own work?

Hi Aafi. Would you mind taking a look at File:Max Israel.jpg and File:Y.Chroma model.jpg? The "own work" claims seem a bit questionable. I'm pretty sure these might've been uploaded before under slightly different names, but were deleted either as copyvios or for lacking permission, but I can't remember the file names or whether the files were uploaded locally to English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

hmm @Marchjuly - I agree. I suspect COI. I can't see any copies around on the internet but given the condition of en-wiki article, I believe this has been uploaded for advertising purposes alone. 922 × 1,382 & 1,200 × 1,600 (dimensions) say a lot. I don't know if {{No permission since}} is warranted but I believe @AFBorchert will have a better idea. I'm personally more oriented towards a DR in such cases. "Own" doesn't need any more permissions - if there are problems, a DR is the venue to discuss those problems. Regards, Aafi (talk) 08:50, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:13, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
