I do a lot of maintenance and also categorization work. Every now and then I run into files with bad filenames such as typos or with misleading names. In the past I pulled requests which were then handled by others, but it would be easier if I could move the files by myself. I am fully aware of the renaming policies and most of my rename actions will be based on the reasons no. 3, 5 and 6. I won't rename files just to harmonize them in sets as I use the DEFAULTSORT function to group several "other" versions of a single photograph in the category system. Reason no 2 will be used by me just for files with very short names as they potentially could be overwritten when new uploads are getting performed. Thank you. Zaccarias (talk) 19:29, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

From time to time here are uploads of pictures in my vicinity with unsharp or bad description and name. Than I correct description, add coordinates and categories and then suggest renaming them per criterion 2, 3, or 4 - almost in agreement with the Uploader. Now I think, I can and will attend to it myself in such cases. Greetings and thanks Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 16:02, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

MidleadingBot has uploaded about 4000 old books for use on Wikisource. As there are many more books to upload and my upstream bandwidth to Wikimedia servers is only about 1Mbps, I have to keep uploading even before the few editors on Chinese Wikisource have reached consensus about file set naming, then rename these files according to policy, or do not rename if no one object to current naming. And as an administrator on Chinese Wikisource I also need to deal with file renaming requests there. I don't want to flood file renamers' work backlog with bot-generated rationale 1 renames. It will not use CommonsDelinker when file is not used anywhere other than Chinese Wikisource, since this account has bot privilege on Chinese Wikisource which can do replacement. The source of bot is not explicitly free-licensed and may be modified frequently according to workload to do. It will not be used to rename files uploaded by others.--Midleading (talk) 05:44, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Although I have not made many move requests in the past, I don’t recall any being declined. While categorizing I often come across filenames with minor errors, or bot-assigned generic names (e.g. just the source and an ID number), that I don’t think are worth bothering someone else over, but that I would improve myself were I able. My philosophy in a nutshell: I don’t think filenames are very important in comparison to descriptions & categorization, and I believe in respecting authors’ choices as long as they conform to policy and won‘t mislead anyone. Thank you.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:13, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Recently I proposed some remaining requests according to the renaming policy, and I wish that I can help the work about the file renaming following related policies and guidelines. Thank you. This is Taiwania Justo speaking (Reception Room) 02:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

 Question @Taiwania Justo: how do you use spell checking software with English? When you see a word underlined in this way
~~~~~~
in a text area, which steps (if any) do you make to fix it? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:45, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the underlined words is (a) proper noun(s), and the spelling is (are) obvious wrong for the objects in the file, I consider that it matches the criterion 3. But if the proper noun(s) use(s) the unofficial spelling, but the words can describe the same object in a file, I considered that the name must be remained. As for common words, unless the spelling of these words is obviously matches the criterion of the file renaming reasons, I considered that the name must be also remained. Finally, if the spelling of the words is controversial, I will use "request mode" and let the other file movers to do some double check, or do some discussions. This is Taiwania Justo speaking (Reception Room) 01:35, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    @Taiwania Justo: please, work on your serious problem with the very word “renaming”. First, edit your posts to fix all inappropriate substitutions. I don’t deem probable to mistype the word to “remaining” directly, hence conjecture a typo to something like “*remaning” or “*remnaing” and then a clueless application of spell checker. Don’t do such things, please. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:33, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Incnis Mrsi: according to my reading the problem is not with spelling, but idiom: I believe the intended meaning of be remained could be expressed as left alone or remain unchanged. (Hence my comment below.) FWIW I don’t expect discussions among users to be held to the same linguistic standard as ‘curatorial’ information.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 16:09, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Odysseus1479: three or four occurrences may be well-considered, but “some… requests according to the remaining policy” is definitely mistaken. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:58, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; I didn’t notice that one—sorry—and my interpretation above definitely does not work there.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 17:09, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Incnis Mrsi and Odysseus1479: Fixed. It's a typing error in order to the fast-typing. All the meanings in the reason of application are "renaming." This is Taiwania Justo speaking (Reception Room) 00:45, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Comment I declined a criterion #3 rename request on File:Beautiful sunset in Taidong beach.JPG just recently, on the ground that it uses a reasonably common (but unofficial, minority) spelling that is unlikely to be mistaken for anything else. (Also influencing my decline was that the file is easily locatable under the official spelling, from both the description and the categorization. I guess they come from different styles of romanization or represent different Chinese dialects.) I am glad to see Taiwania Justo has taken that on board and seems to understand the difference between an error that calls for correction and a harmless variation.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:10, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Smirkybec: I'm leaning towards granting this, since your renames have been fine, but could you please elaborate on why you uploaded them with the meaningless names to begin with? It would be much preferable in the future to upload them under the correct name rather than rename after upload. Storkk (talk) 13:38, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Storkk: Hi, thanks for taking a look at this. It was my first time using Pattypan, and unfortunately I misunderstood the documentation which resulted in the file names being the default ones from the camera when I had thought that they would be from the text I had included in the "title" field. Thankfully as it wasn't a large upload, so I was able to remedy it through requests. Lesson learned so that won't happen again! I would anticipate that in the future this ability would be of use when working with or helping new editors as they navigate naming procedures. It would also be of use around WLM and Wiki Science when uploaders use default or unhelpful file names. Hope that clarifies! Smirkybec (talk) 13:51, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I frequently see poorly named files here and would like to help clean it up, especially since these are also the filenames at en.Wikipedia, my "home wiki". I'm a filemover there, too, but have little use for the bit over there, because all our images come from here except for fair-use ones that can't be on commons. PS: Feel free to apply any other bits that might be useful and which require about the same clue and scrutiny level; I've been a WMF editor since 2005, and do rollback, page-mover, and template-editor work at en.WP. I just ported over a useful template today ({{Em}}) and will do some more as time permits. PPS, A meta-note: The instructions that come up when you edit this page don't work properly when you're in VE or whatever this is (the interface with "Publish changes..." at top right). The instructional pop-up (with the {{subst:rfr...}} details, etc.) goes flush right, is far too narrow, and cuts off some of the content, but cannot be resized or scrolled left–right. Not sure if that's something that can be fixed at this page or is a VE bug, or what. Seems so far to be the editnotice handler. The content in this case is also transcluded at the top of the page, but this issue likely affects some other pages with editnotices that aren't small. Likely a factor of whether there's an element in the editnotice that can't be wrapped to fit the new editnotice right-side popup schema.SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:42, 4 July 2018 (UTC); revised: 23:48, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I upload many media files, both my own photographs and other media that are in the public domain or available under a free licence. Especially with baseball pictures, I sometimes make typos/misidentify players, and in these cases, I need to correct my filenames. Additionally, I have a significant amount of time I'd be willing to spend evaluating other potential filename changes. Thank you. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 03:36, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Although not terribly active at Commons, I occasionally delve into category sorting when I see the need (I use Cat-a-Lot and HotCat frequently). I need this particular right to sort out the file name mess as Category:Zasavica I, Category:Zasavica II and Category:Crkva Svete Trojice (Zasavica I) as the original uploader mixed up the two villages. I will probably do some moving in the future as well. Thank you. No such user (talk) 09:54, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Support I propose you. You are giving good names to files, including both location and object in the name. As a big uploader, you have good experience with renaming requests. Renaming rights is usefull in the first place for correcting your own naming mistakes, but you may also be helpfull in renaming Čeština langague files. I realise that I am somewhat shy of the guidelines in terms of edits on wikicommons, but I am an admin on two different language wikis (en.wikipedia and mi.wikipedia). On the former of these, I have made almost a quarter of a million edits, many of which have been involved with page, category, and image renaming. Though I have made only some 550 edits on wikicommons, quite a few of these have been requests for file renaming (all valid, I hasten to add), such as this, this, this, and from earlier today, this. Given that I frequently hunt through "unidentified location" categories, trying to pinpoint these unidentified photos, the ability to change file names without having to go through a requesting process would be useful, and would save work for other editors. Thank you. Grutness (talk) 16:29, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The only move I requested that wasn't on my own file is on Category:Muscovy ducks, the scientific name "Cairina moschata" is used for the species and the common name for domestic specimen, I requested it be renamed "Cairina moschata domestica" because "Muscovy ducks" was generating a lot of confusion and miscategorisation, and "Cairina moschata domestica" is the name in use on Wikipedia. The category name was moved, then User:MPF reverted the change. I asked about it on Category talk:Muscovy ducks and never heard back. I have no desire to make controversial changes or to change someone else's files against their will, as my request history has shown I would like to improve my files without making it a burden on other. --Trougnouf (talk) 09:46, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Trougnouf: Sorry, missed the Category talk (the notification system failed to notify me!). The reason I reverted it is that "Cairina moschata domestica" is not a valid name under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature rules; domesticated breeds are not zoological taxa, so they do not have scientific names. - MPF (talk) 10:14, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF: Thank you for getting back to me :) Do you think it would make more sense to add "(domestic)" to the category name (in plain English like on Wikipedia)? I saw that you do some cleaning up between the miscategorized images, but it's impossible to get them all. Most of the images in Category:Muscovy ducks look like they are not domesticated but roaming freely in parcs and ponds, yet we can never tell for sure unless the author mentioned it in the description. I don't know if that's an issue specific to Muscovy ducks or a general rule for species (to categorize domestic animals as their common species name without a domestic qualifier) and you are surely more familiar with the best practices as you administrate Wikispecies. --Trougnouf (talk) 12:06, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Trougnouf: Thanks! Yep, I guess 'Category:Domesticated muscovy ducks' would be more correct, it's just that it is rather long and tedious: you have to type manually as far as 'domestica...' before the drop-down box for adding/changing a category offers 'Domesticated', got to go through 'Dome', then 'Domes', then 'Domestic', before getting to 'Domesticated'. This is already a nuisance with categories like 'Domesticated ducks', 'Domesticated geese', etc. A better option would be Category:Muscovy ducks (domesticated); I'd be happy with that. - MPF (talk) 12:59, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF: That's what I had in mind, (domesticated) at the end, that way it autocompletes when a user starts categorizing their image "Muscovy ducks" and it shows them that the category is for the domestic kind (then the user not familiar with the commons use of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature will hopefully investigate and find the parent Category:Cairina moschata). Thank you! I will make a move request move moved it to Category:Muscovy ducks (domesticated) then. --Trougnouf (talk) 13:14, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe in file «敘利亞騎士堡8694 - Appearance of the Syrian Knights Castle - シリア騎士城の外観 - सीरियाई नाइट्स कैसल की उपस्थिति»? Files with Chinese filenames can be used in wiki projects. Much more helpful is the file description in several languages. Also the image search on commons follows the description. The file name is secondary. Hystrix (talk) 17:38, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The link was just an example, not all photos uploaded by User:林高志 in the link should be renamed. File:敘利亞騎士堡8694.jpg is not one of those photos I want to rename. Instead of asking others to rename the files (as I have done many times now), I could do that myself.
