Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

I have moved this page to User:Actia Nicopolis/Postcards by Aspiotis because it does not conform to the requirements of a Commons Gallery. The page, as it is, would probably be useful at WP:EN or WP:GR. Or, you could transform it into Commons gallery format, see, for example, Lighthouses in Maine. Once that is done, simply copy it to the same place I moved it from.

If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:50, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη. We do not keep two different galleries that are identical except for language. If you with to create a bi-lingual gallery, you may, but the title must be in one language or the other and a redirect for the title in the other language. The reason for this is simple -- having two versions of the same gallery makes it much less likely that both will be maintained -- you may plan to do this, but where will you be 10, 20, 50 years from now?

I note also that you recreated Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη after one of our colleagues deleted it for good reason. That was a serious violation of our rules and if you do it again you may be blocked from editing here. You may appeal deletions at COM:Undeletion requests, but you may not recreate content yourself. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:00, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jim,

Thank you for directing me to create a gallery for Aspiotis' postcards. Your advise is much appreciated and useful. I will reform the page and upload it when ready.

It was not me that recreated Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη. I was advised to move w:el:Κατάλογος καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη to the Commons Gallery, and I did so by creating Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη. This page was speedily deleted for good reason. The user who advised me to move my article w:el:Κατάλογος καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη into Commons as a gallery, created the page Καρτ ποστάλ Ασπιώτη again. So, please, do not blame me for recreating this page in Commons. I hope you will realize the whole story if you look carefully into it.

In anyway, your advice has helped me understand how a gallery should be formed in Commons. Thanks again and wish you a very happy new year!

Dear Jim,

Do you think that this version User:Actia Nicopolis/Postcards by Aspiotis would stand in Commons? Thanks for your time. Actia Nicopolis (talk) 10:17, 17 January 2016 (UTC) (Nikos)[reply]

Yes, with the modification I made I think it is fine, thank you for your effort. The reason for the change to default gallery size is simple. For 80% of all users, it doesn't matter, but for the others, having the default size means that the images will show up on their screens at the size they have specified in their preferences. This is important for user of small screens -- it will allow them to see whole images, rather than having to scroll. More important, it is important to vision impaired people who use very large screens and who want to see only one gallery image on each screen, so they specify their default size as the whole screen. .     Jim . . . . Prevesa postmarks on Ottoman revenues

[edit]

You uploaded some amazing pictures of Ottoman revenues, really nice.

Prevesa postmarked Ottoman revenue (Sul. 4513)

The Ottoman Empire 10 paras brown and yellow, proportional fee fiscal stamp was intended for usage in the Constantinople administrative area according the handbook by Suleymaniye. The issues in same design and same year but in blue and black were for use in provinces (10pa no. 4544). Prevesa is clearly not in the Constantinople administrative area. This makes me doubtful about the postmark. Any sources backing that its genuine? Suleymaniye could have the usage area of two designs mixed up too, which seems unlikely to me.Arno-nl (talk) 17:07, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Although intended for usage in the Constantinople administrative area, i found another revenue (Sul. 4513) which was used in Alexandria, the cancel looks genuine to me. This rules out sole use in the intended area.

Hi Actia Nicopolis, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Renaming

[edit]

Hi, harmonizing file names is a good job, but please don't do it without asking authors in the examples of slovakian towns and villages. Yes, it's true that the slovakian is the official language in Slovakia, but not the only one. So (not only in bilingual cases) if the author of the photograph titled the photo in hungarian, please do not harmonize it to slovak name, because it's not authors mistake, but the title what he/she wanted to give it. If you want to harmonize something from Slovakia, here is something what would be great (for better traceability): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ciconia_ciconia_nests_in_Slovakia (of course I mean files in subcategories). Thanks a lot! Taz (talk) 14:15, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Philhellenic objects

[edit]

Dear Actia Nicopolis, I saw your uploads of Philhellenic ceramic plates (File:Philhellenic plate by Creil Montereau. Pacha fait prisonnier.jpg and File:Philhellenic plate by Creil Montereau. Les turks Envenant les Femmes et Les Enfans Grecs.jpg. I am writing to you for two reasons:

  1. A request: Would you happen to have (a long shot) any photo of philhellenic clocks ? I am asking because we have the relevant article in elwiki: el:Φιλελληνικά ρολόγια
  2. An idea: Should we make a category of Philhellenic objects? Is this a good title? We have one more plate and playing cards

--FocalPoint (talk) 19:45, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear FocalPoint,
In a recent auction catalogue you could pick some up. Look at lots no. 113-116. They are in the public domain, so there should be no problem upolading any of those.
I shall add a category that you suggest. Many thanks for the suggestion and making me get involved in the Greek Revolution Project !
Actia Nicopolis (talk) 19:59, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We cannot use recent photos of three dimensional objects. The copyright of the photo belongs to the photographer, while a photo of two dimensional object does not have any added characteristic from the photographer, but an excellent idea, thank you! --FocalPoint (talk) 20:09, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting rename again since I can't seem to request a rename on File:Coat of arms of the Philippines (1943–1945).svg again

[edit]

Hello @Actia Nicopolis: sorry to disturb you but can you please change the name again to " File:Coat of arms of the Philippines (1943-1945).svg "? I accidentally used the wrong dash on the renaming request, it is to match the other coat of arms that use a regular dash, the flags meanwhile use nbsp dashes. I can't seem to request a rename once again since I think it already redirects there, it is the only one out of the Philippine coat of arms to have that nbsp dash and it will be nice to match it up with the others citing Criterion 4 and Criterion 6. Many thanks! PyroFloe (talk) 18:58, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @PyroFloe: , it seems that I am not able to rename it again, as the previous name was with a regular dash (-). Please, put the subject into the Village Pump https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump. Best wishes Actia Nicopolis (talk) 20:18, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and possibly the tram icons can be done too

[edit]

Hello, thanks for helping me to harmonise the naming scheme for the new Paris transit icons that are starting to appear on the transport network. I think we may be able to also rename the following files that represent the new Paris tram icons under Criteria 4, before the other Wikipedia projects start to use them: at the moment only the Esperanto project is using them:

Old name New name
File:Logo IdFM Tram 1.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 1.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 2.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 2.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 3a.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 3a.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 3b.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 3b.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 4.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 4.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 5.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 5.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 6.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 6.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 7.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 7.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 8.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 8.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 9.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 9.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 10.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 10.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 11.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 11.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 12.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 12.svg
File:Logo IdFM Tram 13.svg File:Paris transit icons - Tram 13.svg

The Câble and Metro icon names may have to be done later because many projects are using them, and I may need a larger consultation on the matter.

We need your feedback!

[edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As the photo is from the "Photograph collection of Actia Nicopolis Foundation", I would regard it as "previously published" as understood in the Commons:Volunteer Response Team (VRT) guidelines, and thus you should confirm your rights to license the photo, and your chosen licence, by an e-mail as instructed on that page.
Your user page says that you are Nikos Karabelas. As anybody can make such a claim, you should likewise e-mail the VRT to confirm your identity (cf Commons:Username policy#Well-known names). Not everyone nominating files for deletion will look at your user page, but at least the admin making the closing decision should, and the VRT ticket (if confirmed as valid) will remove any doubts. (There may be a slight problem in your using Nikos Karabelas on your user page, but Nikos D. Karabelas in the photo attribution. You might want to mention both in your VRT e-mail.)

Nicopolis aqueduct

I'm currently working on a article about the aqueduct of Nicopolis for the German Wikipedia. Unfortunately, Nicopolis is very baldy represented in the German Wikipedia. A lot to do for the future!

Unfortunately the Greek and English articles are very bad and extremely badly documented with bibliographical notices.

Licensing of files from the collection of Actia Nicopolis Foundation, Preveza, Greece

[edit]

Dear Nikos Karabelas,

Several files that you uploaded from the collection of the Actia Nicopolis Foundation have unknown authorship, but have been uploaded under a Creative Commons license. There is currently no evidence that the copyright holder of these files, which will usually be the photographer or perhaps their employer at the time of making the photo, has agreed to this licensing. Do you have any such evidence that you could provide to VRT? Felix QW (talk) 19:02, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Felix QW,
The photographs that we upload from the collection of Actia Nicopolis Foundation are either in the public domain, 70+ years after the creator's death, or images of unknown creator which were created more than 50 years ago, or photographs of my own (Nikos D. Karabelas).
If you find any images that are not in any of these three categories, please let me know to correct the information.
Thanks for contacting me
Nikos Actia Nicopolis (talk) 19:12, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your swift reply! The issue is that in the EU (and that includes Greece), anonymous works enter the public domain 70 years after they were published rather than 50 years. There is also the additional issue of the URAA restoration, which led to all works that were not in the public domain in 1996 to be recopyrighted in the US. In conjunction with a change in the law in 1993, this means that anonymous Greek images should be from before 1943 to be free in both the US and Greece as required. Similarly, works with named authors should have a date of death before 1943 for the same reason. Felix QW (talk) 21:00, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Affected:

And also:

Since their upload seems to have been based on a misunderstanding about Greek copyright terms, I have now opened a deletion request for the post-1953 images that were not marked as being made by yourself. Best wishes, Felix QW (talk) 08:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Felix QW,
My knowledge was that the copyright for an anonymous creator work lasted for 50 years after the work was created.
What has changed?
Do you know of the Greek legislation?
Please, let me know.
Best wishes
Nikos Actia Nicopolis (talk) 10:24, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think part of the issue is the confusing text at {{Anonymous work}}, which suggests that copyright may last 50 years. If you look at the tiny note at the bottom, though, it has a note saying that This template does not apply to works from countries that extended the Berne Convention or that did not sign it. In particular, this includes the European Union. You can always find the actual terms at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Greece (or analogous for other countries), which clarifies that copyright for anonymous and pseudonymous works lasts 70 years from 1 January of the year after the year when it was made lawfully accessible to the public, as long as the author is not identified in that period. As far as I know, the term was extended from 50 to 70 years in 1993, for all those works whose term had not yet expired at that point. Felix QW (talk) 13:21, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Felix,
This is trully confusing.
So, does this mean that images after 1954 will be deleted?
Please, give me some days to copy the files and discriptions, so to have them ready when they become copyright free.
Is there a way that they stay "idle" until the become common (70 plus years) and then automatically be uploaded again? I remember discussing this with some older wikipedists in the past.
Many thanks for the new information, Felix
Best wishes
Nikos Actia Nicopolis (talk) 13:58, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Nikos,
Don't worry!
They will be "deleted", but that does not mean they disappear from our servers. They will be undeleted as soon as they are copyright-free in both Greece and the US.
I am sure you will have enough time to copy the files and descriptions anyway, since those deletion requests often stay open for months before an administrator gets round to actioning anything at all. Felix QW (talk) 14:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Felix,
Could I, also, ask you if there is a way that the images mentioned above, will automatically be available in commons pd, after 70 years of the date of their creation? Or would one need to upload them again?
Best wishes

Hello Actia Nicopolis. Nice photos from Category:The Humans, theatro Mousouri, Athens, 2024. For your info, I removed the Category:2024 events in Athens from the individual photographs, since the whole event is part of this category. FocalPoint (talk) 05:12, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
