recovering uploaded files

i uploaded a number of pictures which went well using upload wizard . but there was some problem while entering the description and names and had to close browser . now when i try to upload it again it says bad token. so files which are uploaded are still there. how can i recover them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ನಳಪಾಕ (talk • contribs) 14:33, 31 May 2015‎ (UTC)

  • Maybe you could try uploading them after clearing the cache, or with a different browser? If you still have no luck, you can try asking for assistance at Commons:Upload help (sorry I can't be more help, but I'm not that familiar with how to make the upload wizard work properly). --Cassieratoi (talk) 05:59, 1 June 2015 (UTC)this is my first edit , my first time uploading photo and i did not privide suitable license ! so how can i provide it ? in the edit ? or by what means ??? thz :)

Hi Cassieratoi,
problem ist that content on Facebook is not free per se. You need a permission from the copyright holder. Also, in the source-entry you just wrote the description of the source, but did not provide a link to the source. Anyway, it is very unlikely that you will obtain a permission for this photo. --Túrelio (talk) 06:17, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Deleting a previous version of an image

Hi. I need some help please. Our organization were given rights on two images by a copyright holder and i uploaded them to commons. However the original copyright holders have requested that we replace the files with a lower resolution version. Out of respect to the copyright holders we wish to comply with the request and have uploaded a lower quality version. However the higher quality image still appears in image history on Commons. Can the previous version be deleted without having to delete the whole image? (which is in use in many articles)? Thanks Jason.nlw (talk) 11:46, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello Jason.nlw. Deleting one version is easily done but I see another potential problem - you haven't provided evidence that the copyright holder(s) have licensed. Assuming you're talking about File:Boy destroying piano.jpg and File:VNC Female.jpg, you've put yourself as author, but in the description the author (photographer) is named as Philip Jones Griffiths and the EXIF names Michael Jones as author. Unless there is something I'm missing, we need clear proof that the photographer licensed the works for reuse by anybody or released them into the public domain. Assuming the photos were published in the UK, Griffiths' work loses copyright protection after 31 December 2078 because he died in 2008. Green Giant (talk) 11:17, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Green Giant We have received permission via email and as part of a spread sheet dealing with various rights issues, to release these images into the public domain via Wiki Commons. This permission comes from Photographers daughters who head up the Philip Jones Griffiths Foundation (which owns the copyright on his work). We struggled to find the correct way to express this through the templates/format of Commons. If you could recommend the best way do do so, i can amend the information. Presumably we could then get the larger images removed completely? Thanks Jason.nlw (talk) 12:16, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Please see COM:OTRS & feel free to come back here if that still leaves you with questions. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Aye, as Jmabel says, you can ask the copyright holder to send a license statement to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, similar to the sample statement at COM:ET. When they confirm they have sent an email, you can add the {{OTRS pending}} template to each affected file. There is a considerable backlog at OTRS so patience is advised. I've deleted the oldest versions in each of the two files mentioned above, so that resolves your original question. Green Giant (talk) 15:31, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Green Giant Jmabel Thank you both for your help with this. I have now requested that the Copyright holders complete one of the email templates granting permission and will send it to using OTRS as soon as i get it back. Cheers! Jason.nlw (talk) 08:45, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Some years ago one of my pictures (File:Srinagar_pano.jpg) was nominated for a Featured Image but failed to get enough positives. What is the process for a re-nomination, if it's possible? KennyOMG (talk) 10:11, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Don't blank the old page, that is a record and should be kept. The instructions say to add a /2 after the filename for renominations (see the small text above the 'create new nomination' box). So you're new nomination should be Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Srinagar pano.jpg/2. Hope this helps. ColonialGrid (talk) 07:58, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

New category for Samperin veturi?

There are already five photographs of the "Samperin veturi", a 19th-century cargo locomotive brought from the United States to Finnish Lapland, in Category:Savukoski. These images alone take up about a fifth of the entire category. Two of the photographs I have taken myself, three are by other people. Should there be a separate category just for this locomotive? It looks like it is the main tourist attraction in Savukoski, apart from general wilderness hiking and fishing that is. JIP (talk) 20:59, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Five is plenty, go ahead and create it. --ghouston (talk) 23:26, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
How should it be named? I know where the locomotive is located, I have visited it personally. But I don't know of any other name for it than "Samperin veturi", Finnish for "the Samperi locomotive", because it was ordered by a guy named Sandberg, which sounds like the mild oath "samperi". I don't know its official model number, or even whether it is technically a locomotive at all or some other vehicles. JIP (talk) 09:10, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
It seems that it's not a locomotive, but some kind of tracked steam tractor / traction engine. Judging by the file descriptions it's a Phoenix Log Hauler from the Phoenix Manufacturing Company. How about naming it Category:Phoenix Log Hauler, Tulppio? It looks like the Phoenix Manufacturing Company also needs a category in Commons, since there are quite a few photos of its buildings. --ghouston (talk) 12:56, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
More pictures about Category:Phoenix Manufac co, in this museum was name "Sandbergin veturi"--Motopark (talk) 16:14, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
The category Category:Phoenix Manufac co seems to have only recently been created. I put all the images there instead of creating a separate category, to avoid duplication of categories. But I don't particularly like the abbreviated name "Phoenix Manufac co", it should be spelled out in full. And currently the category contains only images of this one specific vehicle. Should the name be more specific? JIP (talk) 16:37, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
The category actually includes photographs of two separate vehicles of the same type, both made by the same company, Phoenix Manufacturing Company. Both are in Lapland, Finland, but one is in Savukoski and the other is in Rovaniemi. I never even knew there was one in Rovaniemi too. Anyway, I still think the category should be renamed so that the company name is spelled out in full. Does anyone have any more pictures? The article on Wikipedia says the company made about 100 such vehicles. Only two of them are in Finnish Lapland. Surely the vast majority is still in the United States? JIP (talk) 19:18, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
I renamed that category to Category:Phoenix Manufacturing Company. I'll add the buildings there too. --ghouston (talk) 02:34, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Since the vehicle type is apparently "Phoenix Log Hauler", I still suggest using that in a category name, perhaps a category for each of the two locations. They do exist in the US [1] but nothing on Commons or Flickr with a free license. --ghouston (talk) 03:00, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
So that's how you drive one. I had always wondered how it's done because the steering wheel seemed to be put on backwards. JIP (talk) 07:05, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
I also created Category:Phoenix Log Hauler. I'm not sure if it would be correct to describe it as a tractor or traction engine, but I've left it out of those categories for now. --ghouston (talk) 22:52, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

hi! i'm having no luck finding the appropriate copyright tag for this, and am not even 100% sure that it's public domain. A US university hosted a memorial bench dedication, it was a public event, and they distributed some programs, which were then scanned. what is the copyright situation here? thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srippey (talk • contribs) 20:48, 3 June 2015‎ (UTC)

It’s hard to say without more details. When was the event? Does the programme include photographs, illustrations or decorations, or is it just text? Generally speaking, unless it’s quite old there‘s no reason to suppose any original graphical content, or creative verbiage (beyond mere listings of items, speakers & times), would be copyright-free.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:00, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

File:Signal received from Rosetta (12055070794).jpg - how come that this image on commons is under CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO license when on flickr it's under All rights reserved? It was reviewed by a bot which isn't particularly trustworthy either. Is that one of these cases when license on flickr isn't the one image is actually licensed with? And if so - shouldn't it also link to the page with an actual licensing of the image? Similar cases occur with some of other images in Category:Rosetta (spacecraft) and it's subcat. SkywalkerPL (talk) 10:07, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

The license on Flicker may have changed. Ruslik (talk) 20:37, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Why do you say the bot isn't particularly trustworthy? Its only purpose is to establish independently the license on Flickr on a particular date. A CC license made by the actual copyright holder can't be revoked at will. --ghouston (talk) 23:01, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Someone else's work in the public domain

Hello!

I would like to upload a few pictures from a book that I believe is in the public domain; the files would be photographs of my own taking. Would this be allowed? Please let me know. Twozenhauer (talk) 18:03, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes, this will allowed provided that the book (and all photos in it) is really in public domain. Ruslik (talk) 20:33, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! If you would not mind, perhaps you might help me with this problem as well: I have searched the catalog of copyright entries, and I can find no mention of the work that I would like to photograph. Is it safe to assume that the book is in the public domain if it is not mentioned in the 1973 or 1961 catalogs, or should I contact the Copyright Office? Twozenhauer (talk) 21:59, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
The search is not trivial; what book is it, and what year was it published? There are way more than just the 1973 and 1961 catalogs. If you're willing to pay for a copyright search, that can help.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:37, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

For example:

Or is it just a mark to be removed? Thanks, EChastain (talk) 18:11, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

It is just an indication that somebody is claiming copyright, which is fully compatible with releasing it under a CC license. Remember, releasing your own work under a CC license (except CC-0) does not mean that you completely loose your copyright. However, visible copyright marks/watermarks are discouraged on Commons, as they decrease the usability of images and as they cannot be removed without putting the remover into possible legal trouble (see Commons:Watermarks#Legal_issues_with_the_removal_of_watermarks). --Túrelio (talk) 18:43, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
In the case of User:Manel JGuirim, kind communication is the prefered path, as he has already replaced some of his watermarked images by a version without a watermark. --Túrelio (talk) 18:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the info. EChastain (talk) 20:42, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

At mr-wikipedia we would like to convert a new template w:mr:Template:स्वतः to Machine readable format (It is an equivalent template to Template:Self with few changes suitable for Indian copyright act rules, there are few more templates at mr-wiki which also may require coversion to machine readable format), where we can get help for this, or how do we do that.

Probably a cookie in your web browser, actually, though I am guessing. Hit the button again when you get that message, and it should work. Revent (talk) 14:30, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

MPF, I've split it up into about 60 smaller galleries, mostly with 60 or 120 files each, which I think is a manageable number for most users. There are still some to be split up even more but I'll do that tomorrow. Green Giant (talk) 01:39, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Uploading Images

Hello, I am trying to upload an image of my grandmother Columba Krebs in addition to a photo of the front copy of her book Skuddabud. The photo comes from a family album in my possession. The book is out of copyright and also in my possession. Columba Krebs is now deceased. How do I proceed in the Release rights section of the upload process? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HollySmithAuthor (talk • contribs)

  • I'm guessing you are uploading with the Upload Wizard. Could someone more familiar with the Upload Wizard please help out here?
  • "family album in my possession": the issue would be who took the photo and whether you are the heir to that person's intellectual property rights. If you are, then probably the relevant license would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. At worst, you can upload with the Wizard using cc-by-sa, and then promptly correct the license by editing (with an edit summary explaining that is what you are doing).
  • If Skuddabud is indeed out of copyright in the U.S., I presume it is because of non-renewal, right? The relevant template would be {{PD-US-not renewed}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Just for reference in any discussion here, this seems to be referring to en:Columba Krebs. Revent (talk) 23:25, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Uploading multiple images

Stefaan Dondeyne, who is a Facebook friend, has given permission to use all his images at https://www.flickr.com/photos/64245503@N07/sets/72157626999412350 . There are many images and as he is not experienced in uploading, I would recommend that someone contact him and confirm his offer, and then arrange the upload. Thank you Paul venter (talk) 10:00, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm afraid "permission to use" isn't sufficient for Commons. Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use, modify and redistribute for any purpose, including commercial purposes. I had a look at a few of those photos, but all the ones I looked at were marked "© All rights reserved". Please see Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change for how to ask a Flickr user to release their photos under a free license, which includes instructions on how they can do that. What does this Russian book title mean?

Hello all. I've found, via the British Library's Flickr page, an image from the book "Монголія и страна Тангутовъ, трехлѣтнее путешествіе въ Восточной Нагорной Азіи". I cannot read Russian, and Google Translate only gives me a vague idea of the title in this case. I'm pretty sure the book is about an expedition (probably scientific) to Mongolia and western China. Any help with a more exact translation of the title would be appreciated. Howicus (talk) 22:41, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

I don’t speak Russian, but I’m reasonably handy with a dictionary; I’d render it Mongolia and the Tangut country: a three-year journey in the Eastern Highlands of Asia. In the enWP article on the author, N.M. Przewalski, the title of the English translation of what I assume to be the same work is given as Mongolia, the Tangut Country.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:38, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the help. I think I'll call it Mongolia, the Tangut Country (that is the same work). Howicus (talk) 00:12, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Oh hey, the book is at Wikisource (partially) as Mongolia, the Tangut country, and the solitudes of northern Tibet. I think that's what I'll call it. Howicus (talk) 00:20, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Regarding .ai files here, the problem is that they are a proprietary file type, and therefore not free so we don't accept them (see Commons:File types). Proprietary file types are also less accessible, as they can only be opened by people who have the specialist software to open them. ColonialGrid (talk) 17:39, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

A bicycle, at least in the US, is not a copyrighted object. You may own the plaque, but you don't own the copyright to it. It's like ripping a DVD and putting it online; just because you own the DVD, doesn't give you the right to make copies.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:13, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

You can only upload them if they are free of copyright issues. For this sort of thing either it could be something very simple, or a replication of something very old and copyright expired. If you know enough to show there is no copyright then you can upload. If you don't know who wrote it or what it is, or how old it is, then you cannot really upload it here. Tool for making intersection-cat

Cat-a-lot lets me select a bunch of files in a category and move them to a subcat all at once. And HotCat lets me remove an image from a category from a file's page itself. To create an intersection-cat, I can move the files from one parent into its subcat, but then it seems like I need to remove them each individually from the other parent. Is there a Cat-a-lot way to remove files from a cat other than the category where it's being used? Or is there some other tool I can use to streamline this process? DMacks (talk)

Trying to use CommonsHelper gets me into an endless loop

What I did:

  1. Read Transferring using CommonsHelper's advice:
    • The alternative [to the Windows tool] is to use CommonsHelper, a tool at WMF Labs, to assist with the move.
  2. Click the link. It takes me to Move-to-commons assistant. The bottom of the page says
    • Directly transfer file to Commons
    • To use the automatic transfer function, you need to authorize OAuth uploader to perform uploads under your Commons user name.
    • See also this blog entry. [AFAICT, the blog entry is irrelevant to my situation.]
  3. Click on OAuth uploader. It takes me to https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:OAuth/authorize&oauth_token=2611623f5b785567fcd9f379f5c533f5&oauth_consumer_key=74a4d433d0ab9f9fad720e1c4eb8159a , with a popup that says

Now, I have re-uploaded it, but I created it myself (It looks like the real thing). Is this copyright violation/infringement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by EnigmaLord515 (talk • contribs) 14:57, 11 June 2015‎ (UTC)

Typography in the US is not copyrightable. What you didn't change, the text, is exactly what would be copyrightable about the work. It's probably above PD-Text, though I'd say the courts haven't been consistent on that.--Prosfilaes (talk) 15:06, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

PHOTO DELETION

An image associated with an article I have written has been deleted twice, on the second occasion because of alleged license laundering. This was despite the fact that the photographer involved removed all copyright to the image and the subject of the article uploaded it to his Flickr account with all the required licensing arrangements in place. Can anyone tell me how I can get this image onto the page so that it will not be deleted in future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anne O'Donnell (talk • contribs)

Hi Anne,
are you refering to the deleted image File:Colm Keane.jpg? If yes, it is sourced to Flickr, where it was released under a CC-BY-SA-NC license. The problem results from the NC component, which means that it is restricted to non-commercial use. Per our licensing policy (COM:L) uploads to Commons have to be free for any kind of use, including commercial use and the creation of derivatives. In case of portrait-shots, "free for commercial use" does NOT include use for advertising etc. which usually requires a model release from the depicted person. So, in order to have this image stay on Commons, you would need to persuade the photographer of the portrait to either remove the NC restriction from the Flickr page (at least temporarily) or to send his/her permission directly to our support team (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). Anyway, it will not be possible to grant a permission only for Wikipedia. --Túrelio (talk) 09:40, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Barry Railway Station

How do I set about challenging the objection to the pictures being posted?

Rhobat Bryn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhobat Bryn (talk • contribs)

Lord Shiva is often referred as " MAHADEV " , meaning GOD of GODS.. Before knowing that, let us see what GOD refers to : GOD refers to G - Generator ( Lod Brahma, the creator), O - Operator (lord Vishnu) and D - destroyer ( Lord shiva destroys with his third eye, so mahadev is called Trimambakeshwar means the three eyed God). In this regards, it may seem that Lord Shiva has the 3rd eye and he destroys in anger.. Here destroying means destroying the arrogance, bad things and evil in us and in all other Gods..But the truth is mahadev is BHOLA SHANKAR ( BHOLA means innocent),, he is the only GOD who is pleased by mere chanting his name and fulfills all wishes of the people. The other popular names associated with Lord Shiva are Mahesh, Maheshwar, Shankar, Shambhu, Rudra, Har, Trilochan, Devendra (meaning Chief of the gods) and Trilokinath (meaning Lord of the three realms).Shiva means "the One who is eternally pure" and he is untouched by any thing. According to a story, a dispute occurred between Brahma the creator, and Vishnu the preserver, over which of them was superior. In order to settle the argument, Lord Shiva is said to have manifested as a column of light and told them to find the start point and end point of the column of fire, then Brahma took the form of a swan and flew to see the crown of Siva. Unable to see the crown, Bramha saw a thazhambu flower which had decked Siva's crown falling down. He asked the flower as to the distance of Siva's crown whereby the flower replied that he had been falling for forty thousand years. Brahma, realizing that he would not be able to reach the crown asked the flower to act as a false witness. The thazhambu flower acting as a false witness declared that Brahma had seen the crown. Siva became angry at the deception and cursed that Brahma should have no temple on earth and that the thazhambu flower should not be used while praying to Lord Siva. Lord Vishnu accepted his defeat and said that he was not able to find the end of the column. Neither Lord Vishnu nor Lord Brahma were able to find the start and end of the column of fire of Mahadev( the place where this incident took place is Tiruvannamalai, Tamilnadu.(the lingam there is called the“ Agni Linga”)..That is why mahadev says " Is brahmaand ka arambh bhi main hoon aur anth bhi main hoon " ( means that Lord Shiva is the start and he is the end of this universe). Lord Shiva is present in each and every element that comprises this universe, and mahadev is the only God who is present in every human being (that is why they say Har Har Mahadev means every one is mahadev,, since he is present in every one) when he/she is alive and even when the person dies,, even then he applies the ashes of our dead body all over his body. That is the greatness of mahadev.

Also: Bitte um Hilfe - was soll ich tun? Was soll ich wo eintragen? Vielen Dank für die Unterstützung und viele Grüße

--Henkeline (talk) 18:06, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Hallo Henkeline,

Licensing specified for picture, yet it still shows as missing.

Hi, I just uploaded the following picture: File:PitestiCollage.jpg ... and specified author, source and license but I still got a message which says further information about licensing is required. Meanwhile I also added permission={{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}, but I'm not sure if that is what I was meant to do. Could someone please assist? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrazvan22 (talk • contribs)

Where did you get the pictures in the collage? You did not upload them. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:27, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
  • I reckon these four images were used:
File:Pitesti city hall.jpg
File:Cinema modern pitesti.jpg
File:Pitesti art gallery.jpg
File:Muzeul Judetean Arges Pitesti 08.jpg
Is this correct @Mrazvan22: ? If it is, they should be listed, along with the original authors, in the source field (same goes for File:PitestiCollageWider.jpg); part of the CC licence is an attribution clause. ColonialGrid (talk) 15:06, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Confusion about image source

A while ago I uploaded an image, File:Matthew_Mclintock_Scott.png, and it was only today that the image source has been queried, saying I must add an author and source of the image. The image is of a family member of mine, and is clearly taken at the start of the 20th century/end of the 19th century, due to the fact he is wearing an '1898' cap. The image is out of copyright if it was ever in copyright, although the creators of the image and possessors of the image have been my family, so the copyright, if it ever existed, remains in our family therefore it is within my ability to use this image whenever I wish.

Firstly, I am being queried about the author and the source, but those sections are clearly already filled: Source is 'Own work' and author is myself. What am I supposed to do? If I ought to change those sections to reflect a truer notion of who owns the image and what-not, how should I change it and what should I write instead?

Help please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewdwilliams (talk • contribs)

  • The most accurate you can be may be "Unknown", and "family collection". Date would be "{{circa|1900}}". You'll need to work out the licensing claim yourself. A picture from 1900 or so is not clearly public domain. If, for example, the photographer was 20 years old and lived to 80, then in the UK the work would still be copyrighted (2015-1960=55 years). However, with a genuinely unknown author, I think it's OK. You should ask at Wikipedia:Village pump/Copyright where there will be people more knowledgeable about details of UK copyright law. - Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Andrewdwilliams, Commons can only host the image if it is free in both the source country and the USA. If the photo is from 1898, then certainly it is in the public domain in the USA. The information you are being asked for is:
  • Who took the original photo? It is unlikely to be you, unless you are over 120 years old, in which case congratulations.
  • If it is an unknown photographer, what steps have you or others taken to identify the photographer?
  • If the photographer is known, what year did s/he die? Morbid question but essential for working out copyright term.
  • Was the photo ever published i.e. made available to the public? If so, what year and which country was it published in?
  • How did you come by the photo? Was it found in a book or is it hanging on a wall somewhere?
  • If you can furnish as much information as possible, it will make it easier to work out the copyright status. If it was published in the UK in 1898, then it might be affected by one or more of the several copyright-related Acts of Parliament e.g. 1911, 1957 and 1988. If you want a simple-ish summary, I'd recommend the Copyright Service website. Green Giant (talk) 18:01, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
  • We can say nothing in general about photos taken in 1898 under US law. If it is unpublished, and you do due diligence about not being able to find an author, it's effectively PD (though possibly only for you) after 120 years. If it is published, then when is the whole question.--Prosfilaes (talk) 18:59, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
I can quite comfortably say that I don't know who the author is, and there is no way of finding out. I can also say that to the best of my knowledge the photo has never been published, and has remained in the private family genealogy collection. According to the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, the copyright ends 70 years after the photo was authored, since I have no knowledge of it being published or the original author. If we are to assume that the photo was taken circa 1898, possibly a couple years later but not much later, then the copyright would have expired in the 1970s. If this is the case, and all of which I have just said is correct, does that mean I'm home and dry and can use this photo as I wish?--Andrewdwilliams (talk) 11:47, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Adding book cover

I added book cover in some of my articles. Without contacting them is it possible to add the wrapper as per rules, as many of them are not in a position to reply thro email or operate typewriter or in a position to do such things due to technical problems) I request you to please clarify how I can add the title cover of the book. I wish to know its proper usage. I wish that they should not be deleted. Since as I find it difficult to get a clear idea I request your help. As I wanted to contribute much to Wikipaedia I need your suggestion.--பா.ஜம்புலிங்கம் (talk) 02:38, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

  • We can only host media which is freely licenced. That means that only images in the public domain (where copyright has expired); that cannot be copyrighted (being to simple or by an organisation like the US Government that cannot hold a copyright); or which are released under a free copyright (like a Creative Commons licence) can be hosted here. There is no evidence that the book covers you have uploaded meet any of those requirements, in cases like this we assume that the design is under copyright, and must delete them for being unfree. If you have evidence that they are freely licenced, please add it to the file's page, and update the licence. Alternatively, if you know the author, and know that they will release the cover (if they can) under a free licence, please follow the instructions at COM:OTRS. Otherwise these book covers simply cannot be hosted at Commons. However, depending on the local Wikipedia that you are adding the images to, you may be able to upload them locally under fair use. I hope this clears things up. ColonialGrid (talk) 07:32, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Easier uploads

Hello. I was proposing an easier way of posting large file. Instead of having to download the file to your pc, laptop etc., it would be easier to upload via a url form. But, upload done that way would immediately be sent into a waiting 'limbo' until the permissions & licenses have been sorted before being officialy 'uploaded' to wikimedia commons for the world to see. Thank you, I do implore you to think about this, a sort of parallel world for 'sorting' to avoid license conflicts. Hamwil (talk) 12:26, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Uploading centuries old image, but it's not mine

Wiki commons rules says we can upload photos of extremely old art since any copyright would have expired. What if it's not our own photo? I'd like to upload an image of a painting from at least 3 centuries ago, but the image was uploaded on a Vietnamese news site, it's not a photo I took myself. However the art piece in question is undoubtedly in the public domain because of its age.Darkesirranch (talk) 20:47, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

See COM:When to use the PD-Art tag. An image that is a 'faithful reproduction' of a public domain 2D work of art incorporates no independent expression of creativity, and thus creates no valid 'new' copyright claim. So say the lawyers, and we like it. Revent (talk) 21:09, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Use one picture of Wikimedia Commons to include in a book

Dears sirs,

I would like to answer if I could use this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eismeer.jpg

To include in one book about Santiago Ramon y Cajal, that will be published probably in 2016.

Thank you very much,

Best regards,

Susana susrizo@yahoo.es

  • Yes. You can use that image without any restriction as the author has released it into the public domain without any restriction. However, it would still be nice (although not in any way required, either legally or morally) for you to credit the author of the picture by mentioning their Commons username and where the picture comes from in the publication. ColonialGrid (talk) 16:15, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Be advised that the image is not very high in resolution: it should print just fine at around 10 cm × 7 cm or smaller, but if made much larger than that it will become ‘soft’ and eventually begin to show aliasing (pixellation). Just in case you wanted to use it for a two-page spread or similar …—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:00, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Comparing a file on another wiki to a deleted file at commons

Hi there! I'm a sometimes-mover of images from enwiki to Commons, and occasionally I run into an image where a file of the same name had previously existed and been deleted on Commons. In the case where there's no discussion of the deletion that I can find that might describe the image, what's the best way for me to get an admin's attention to help me compare the files to see if they're the same image? Undeletion requests? Admin noticeboard? Somewhere else? Thanks for the advice. —Darkwind (talk) 07:43, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

@Darkwind: I guess if you only want an admin to have a look at the deleted file and see if it's the same as the local one, a quick informal request at the admin noticeboard would be best. --El Grafo (talk) 08:01, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Uploading public domain images

Uploading an image which the uploader has created and wishes to make public domain is unnecessarily confusing. There are currently two (maybe more, but I only know of two) versions of the "Upload Wizard": here and here. They are different in several ways.

At the top each has a button "Try the Upload Wizard instead". These buttons do not lead to an upload wizard, they lead to a page of information here.

I have been uploading my own work for seven years, and have to some extent learned my way around the various obstacles, but I still find them a deterrent. I have stopped recommending to friends that they try to upload their own work - few manage it without help. And I have had uploads rejected when they were modifications of images already in Commons, see my talk page. Maproom (talk) 10:28, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

@Maproom: FWIW, the WMF is apparently trying to improve the upload wizard 'experience'... time will tell. Revent (talk) 11:28, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure what it is you want help with, but perhaps I can sort a couple of things out regarding the different upload processes.
  • There is only one version of the Upload Wizard, and that's at Special:UploadWizard. The page of information that you see is the first page of the Wizard. There is a button at the bottom to go to the next step and a checkbox to skip this step in the future.
  • Special:Upload does not have anything to do with the Upload Wizard. It is the original upload form that existed before the Upload Wizard was introduced. It's still around because the Upload Wizard was only half finished and then more or less abandoned by the Wikimedia Foundation, so it's broken more often than not and doesn't cover all the use cases that it needs to cover.
  • The Upload your own work is just a version of Special:Upload with language tailored for users who wish to upload their own works. There are other tailored versions for other common sources listed at Commons:Upload.
LX (talk, contribs) 12:09, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
This is all horribly confusing, with its distinctions between "Special Upload", "Upload Wizard", and "Special Upload Wizard" among other obstacles. I am sure I'm not the only one who is deterred from contributing.
The version which you say is for users who wish to upload their own works divides the list of licences into three categories, the first two being "Allow ... so long as users credit author and share alike", and "Allow ... so long as users credit you". If it's specifically for own works, why is it drawing a distinction between "credit author" and "credit you"?
My purpose in writing here is to help persuade someone to make it more comprehensible. But if as you say the WMF is behind this, I'm wasting my time. I'll shut up now. Maproom (talk) 16:06, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
The difference between those two options, Maproom, isn't "credit author" vs "credit you", it's "credit author and share alike" vs simply "credit you". The first option requires that any derivatives, modifications, etc. must be under the same license as the original. The second has no such requirement. Hope this helps! Howicus (...Australians?) (talk) 13:53, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. That certainly makes sense. If I have understood it correctly, it would be less confusing if the two descriptions were "credit author" and "credit author and share alike". Maproom (talk) 22:35, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm looking for images of en:St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church (Cleveland, Ohio), and both <elizabeth church cleveland> and <elizabeth hungary cleveland> return lots of results, but unfortunately they're almost all results from searchable PDFs that don't have anything to do with this specific church. If you want to use google coding, you should use google. The only such an image on commons appears to be File:St._Elizabeth_of_Hungary.jpg. Ruslik (talk) 13:50, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Use a term like intitle:".jpg" as part of your search, for future reference. Revent (talk) 16:17, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Didn't remember that we had an intitle option. Ruslik0, many search tools use things like Boolean searching (which we have) and metadata searching (consider Worldcat's ti:whatever search, parallel to our intitle), so it's not unreasonable to guess that we'd have a comparable utility. • I'm pretty sure that the original image would exceed COM:TOO in most jurisdictions, and as such would be eligible for copyright. The image you made is a derivative work, and without the original being released under a free licence, we can't host it. If you know the owner of the website, they may ask the graphic designer to release it under a free licence, either with a note on the page, or an email to COM:OTRS. I have found a great movie that I would like to use for my class. The site was emailed to me from wikimedia commons. How do I transfer the information so that my students can access the movie via a hyperlink? Thank you, Nancy Collins Adjunct, JJC — Preceding unsigned comment added by NCollinsgirl (talk • contribs) 17:45, 23 June 2015‎ (UTC)

Hi Nancy! It's not entirely clear to me what it is you want to do. Specifically, I'm not sure what you mean by transferring the information. The idea with hyperlinking is normally that the information stays where it is and that you only provide a clickable reference to it. How you do that mainly depends on the format and tools you use on your end. The address you use should point to the file description page rather than the downloadable file itself, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Xylocopa_violacea_male_-_2012-10-23.webm rather than https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Xylocopa_violacea_male_-_2012-10-23.webm. If you're providing a reference in printed material, using a URL shortening service or QR code generator may save the reader some typing. LX (talk, contribs) 19:18, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Wrong key

When I try to upload, I get the error message "Wrong key". I have retried, as well as removed the image and started from scratch, several times. Sometimes it works, but often not. Can I do anything to have better success? --Årvasbåo (talk) 14:20, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Would I be able to upload this photo?

Hello! I was wondering if I would be allowed to upload a photograph of Louise Haigh? I live in Sheffield and I'd like to improve the articles on the new MPs as much as I can.I took the Photograph from here. Thanks in advance! Luke BassettSYC 13:14, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Commons only accepts freely licenced images. That image is from a British news website that states it to be 'All right reserved', as such we must treat the image as also being all rights reserved and therefore not acceptable at Commons. Sorry, maybe you could find an image of her on a British government website that is available under an open government licence, or on Flickr under a CC licence (please note that Commons does not accept CC image with NC or ND restrictions). How do I make an SVG of a map of the United States with 8 cities ...

How do I make an SVG of a map of the United States with 8 cities connected by lines to show an itinerary to illustrate an article? Is there a free online map making program that does this, or do I have to import a map into Inkscape and add the dots manually? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 14:56, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Photos perdues...

Bonjour.

Adjusting a wonky image

Hello! I just uploaded File:Battle of Ferozeshah illustration.jpg. It's a nice image, but as you can see it's tilted slightly. Would someone please adjust the image, or point me in the direction of a (preferably free) Mac application that would allow me to fix it myself? Thanks, Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 22:45, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

@Howicus: The Gimp (www.gimp.org) is available for Mac, and of course free. :) I'll de-tilt it for you, tho. Revent (talk) 08:50, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Just to make it a bit easier to find (their homepage doesn't make it apparent, since it's natively a *nix program) go to http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html and get the build there... it's precompiled, with some nice addons already plugged in. Revent (talk) 09:06, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
@Revent: Thanks for the de-tilt. I'm going to need GIMP though, it's far from the only tilted image from that book :). Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 13:52, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
@Howicus: Just as a note, about editing jpegs in Gimp: when you re-export them make sure that 'use quality settings from original image' is selected, to avoid adding compression artifacts due to recompression as much as possible... even 'increasing' the quality settings will add them (and will not make the image any better, the information was already lost). No. Commons only hosts free content. Content that you're only allowed to use for non-commercial purposes isn't free. LX (talk, contribs) 14:55, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Photo of building

Can I upload a photo I took myself of an architeturally significant building built in the 1930 decade? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SartagoSternitSartagineHostes (talk • contribs) 16:02, 29 June 2015‎ (UTC)

It depends on where the building is located. If it was taken in a country with freedom of panorama for buildings, it should be OK. If not, it depends on whether or not the architect's copyright has expired. That in turn also depends on the relevant jurisdiction, and it's usually determined by when the author died and/or when the architectural work was published. Broken image

Hello,

I discovered the following image is somehow broken

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carlo_Dolci_-_Madonna_in_Glory_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

it returns 503 when attempting to fetch a scaled version via the API. If I go to the scaled image URL then the message is

Error creating thumbnail: Error code: 137

what is the best way to fix this?

Thanks,

Fred.

I was able to download the file, which opens fine in both Preview and GIMP. When I open it in Photoshop I see a guideline at the level of the bottom of the painting (the tan background covers a frame in the original source, so it might be a leftover from the construction of a mask). Since it would therefore seem to contain application-specific data, possibly in a proprietary format, I’m guessing that might be what’s tripping up the thumbnail generation and so on. (There’s very little metadata AFAICT, but a CS6/Win signature is present.) I’ll try uploading a ‘clean’ version; unfortunately that means re-JPEGing the image, but the resolution is high and I’ll use the maximum quality setting, so the damage should be minimal. Thanks for reporting it. (BTW, please sign your posts by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:59, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Image without permission

Unfortunately this image File:George Ewart Evans, Stowmarket.JPG was uploaded without copyright permission. Although it is only a copy of an public exhibition panel, it may need to be removed. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:59, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

It depends on whether this photo was published and when. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I can ask the subject's daughter if she knows. But he was born in 1909 and I'd estimate he was not older than 40-45 in that portrait, so I'd guess no earlier than 1954. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:54, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
