User talk:Martinevans123
Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:12, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks for telling me. I know nothing about German copyright law. I looked at the articles, both at en.wiki and ge.wiki and saw nothing to suggest there was any problem with simply adding to what has already been here for many years. I am very surprised there should be any problem. It is a free public park, after all. On a personal note, I think that pictures of sculptures are really very different to pictures of other works of art, such as paintings. They only give a very general impression of what the real 3D object is like. There can be no suggestion that a picture might be used on some way to "reproduce" a sculpture. In the case of this particular Sculpture Park, I think it's astonishing that there should be a problem - it's a public park that is free for all to enter. If the Foundation, or any of the artists themselves, had raised an objection, that would be different. But, as far as I know, they have not. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:50, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]When I went in I asked and was told I couldn't use flash inside the house, so they are taken without flash (fairly long exposure). I wasn't told anything about private use or anything like that.Rodw (talk) 07:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough - if you weren't told, you can't be expected to know. Lucky you - I shouldn't have emailed them to ask for a definitive answer! And it wasn't just a prohibition on interior shots either - "Anywhere not from public land" was forbidden to be published, I was told. Maybe the policy has changed. I just thought Wikipedia ought to have had a clear policy written somewhere. Very nice pics anyway, Rod. Best wishes. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:32, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

- I had not noticed that the image owner had set the license to (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) . I'll ask the owner again to change it to one of the allowable ones. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:57, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
- There is a slight second problem, that the Flickr user does not seem to be photographer James Martin or the copyright holder in other sense. Therefore it would appear that the flickr-user is violating copyright rules by stating this license and thus it is impossible to keep the photograph here on commons. Thanks for your understanding. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 05:31, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the prompt and clear reply. Oh, I see. I wish I had known/ realised this at the very start. (Although I suppose that, as some flickr users might use pseudonyms, it's not always very clear who owns what?) But it seems nothing can now be done without contacting the actual photographer and/ or the original publisher? It might be easier for me to simply try and get access to another, less problematic, flickr image. Regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:06, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
- Indeed and thank you for your understanding. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 07:44, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Clubbe family plaque.jpg

Yours sincerely, Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:41, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, Magog the Ogre. Sorry I'm unclear about memorials in churches. In very simple terms - I have to approach the descendants of the Clubbe family to ask their permission? Of the church? Or someone else? Or just choose an alternative copyright license? Any advice would be very welcome. Or was it just because my upload was re-directed to Commons from Wiki? I've manually added a license now. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:04, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- It just needed your license for the photograph. The copyright on the wall plaque never existed under laws of the time, and would have long expired anyway. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:41, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. I had expected it to be added when the upload was redirected to Commons. Is that a bug? Probably just an oversight on my part. Martinevans123 (talk)

- The license used is "Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)". The description says this:
- "You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material"
- What am I missing? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:54, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
