Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:41, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Bobamnertiopsis, please research the copyright status of the depicted artwork. If you cannot prove that it is free of copyright, we cannot keep this picture at Commons as we do not have freedom of panorama in the United States. --AFBorchert (talk) 05:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
3 files
[edit]Hi Bobamnertiopsis, you recently posted three deletion notices on my page concerning the same number of files. These files were taken from videos published on youtube under the "Standard youTube License", which is a Creative Commons license. All three files were taken from videos published by their original owners and not from third parties, as I specified it on all of their descriptions. Since you provided no specific reason on why they were deleted, I am contacting you to kindly ask you for such reasons, since a general deletion notice explains nothing on that decision. Thank you in advance. Cheers! ~ KKCO Sol Jaguar | Let's talk 12:24, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
- Good day, Soljaguar! I'm sorry I had to post deletion notices for the files in question but permit me to explain why I did so. You're correct that the videos were published on YouTube by their original owners and not third parties and you're also correct that they were published under the Standard YouTube License, which can be seen on the video's page by clicking "Show more" in the "About" section. However, the Standard YouTube License is not Creative Commons. I wish it were; that would make the jobs of everyone working on Commons and Wikipedia so much easier. Alas, though, it's not. Now, there are videos on the site that are licensed CC-BY which are denoted by "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" in the "License" field in the "About" section. For example, I recently uploaded this image of a candidate for mayor in my hometown, an image which was screencapped from this YouTube video which you can check and see has a Creative Commons license. The other big giveaway is the large button in the "About" section that says "Remix this video!" Now you might try to find some images from CC-licensed videos by doing a YouTube search, then clicking "Filters" and selecting "creative commons" from the "Features" column. I hope this helps to answer your question; if you've got any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! Thanks, Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 14:05, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! Thank you for your quick and illustrative answer. I might have misunderstood some of the terms described there. I just did a search with filters as suggested and found a couple videos that could be ok. Before I start working on them, I'd like you to please take a look at them and tell me your non-committal opinion about them: video no. 1 and video no. 2. Thank you in advance. Cheers! ~ KKCO Sol Jaguar | Let's talk 18:26, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, both of those videos are suitable! Screencap away, friend! Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 19:25, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
hi. This image is licensed Flickr 2.0 Carlos (talk) 16:13, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
- From the image's description: "Photo by Magssannguaq Qujaukitsoq. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0). This photo may be used only for non-profit purposes, news media stories about Greenland, and marketing of Greenlandic tourist products (but no merchandise production or resale of photos)". Images uploaded from Flickr (and from anywhere else) must be licensed either Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike or Public domain. However, images that include "NoDerivs" or "NonCommerical" are not suitable for upload on Wikimedia Commons because they are not considered to be truly free content. The easiest way to know if something is suitable for upload is to check the "Additional info" box in the bottom right corner of a Flickr page. Here's an image that you can see from the logo in the bottom corner is "Attribution" only, but on the images you uploaded, you can see in the bottom right corner that they're "Attribution NonCommercial No Derivative Works". Hope this helps! Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 16:21, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Hello Bobamnertiopsis, maybe you already noted my edit here concerning the image mentioned above. Following to my edit at the dicussion page of the image you confirmed the data available on the mentioned date with the given license. Can you tell me how this worked? The URL "http://www.voanews.com/content/at-least-42-killed-in-egypt/1697063.html" in combination with the date "July 7" and author " S. Behn" is the only license information given in the image description. But the URL shows the article is dealing with the events of July 8th ("at-least-42-killed-in-egypt") and when you look at the article linked to this URL now, it is called "At Least 51 Killed in Egypt as Tensions Soar" yet and it is dealing with nothing else but the events of July 8th. So can we evaluate the given license information? What is the proof? Do you remember the article was originally dealing with events of July 7th? Greetings,--Anglo-Araneophilus (talk) 02:59, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
- I am sorry, it was my fault. Thanks for your quick, kind and outstanding thoroughly reply! Greetings,--Anglo-Araneophilus (talk) 17:19, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

User who nominated the file for deletion (Nominator) : GRuban.
I'm a computer program; please don't ask me questions but ask the user who nominated your file(s) for deletion or at our Help Desk. //Deletion Notification Bot (talk) 18:12, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, Collin, and thank you for the archive search, and the image in the first place. Nice to meet you! --GRuban (talk) 00:47, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- No worries GRuban! Thank you for reviewing the file. I was surprised to see it up for deletion and was perplexed to see that you were right, it was CC-BY-ND, but I'm glad we got to the bottom of it with some sleuthing! Kindly, Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 01:36, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
License review for YouTube file
[edit]Hello. I was wondering if you could do a license review for the media files below? A lot of the licenses in past YouTube video are being removed and it is worrying me that it will cause the files to be deleted if there is no proof that someone reviewed it. - Hi Shoot for the Stars, I've take a look at these; the last four look good but I'm not sure about the first one so I've tagged it for someone else to take a look at. Let me know if you have any others you'd like me to take a look at. Thanks! Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 00:49, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

- Hi Shoot for the Stars, thanks, I've done what I can here. In future, you may wish to save the YouTube pages containing the CC-BY license at Archive.org manually to ensure their longevity, to tag images with the YouTubeReview template, and also note the timestamp in the video when you screencapped the still from. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Bobamnertiopsis (talk) 22:36, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi. Would you be so kind to review this picture uploaded by me? Thank you:) AlicjaBalicja (talk) 11:34, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!
[edit]Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
