English Kingman Reef - Kingman Reef

Kingman Reef is a 1 km² tropical coral reef located in the North Pacific Ocean, roughly half way between ► Hawaii and ► American Samoa. It is the northernmost of the Northern Line Islands and is an unincorporated territory of the United States, administered from Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior as part of the National Wildlife Refuge system. Kingman Reef, as well as ► Baker Island, ► Howland Island, ► Jarvis Island, ► Johnston Atoll, ► Midway Atoll, ► Wake Island, and ► Palmyra Atoll, lies in the Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii.

Kingman Reef was discovered in 1789 by Captain Edmund Fanning of the ship Betsey. Captain W. E. Kingman described it in 1853. It was formally annexed to the United States in 1922.
