I deleted this, but for next time, you know that you can just upload the accurate map over the top of the old one, right? Just use the same filename. As long as your account is more than 4 days old, you can do it. You will get an upload warning but ignore it, since you're obviously intending to replace the old image. Just a tip. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:53, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's ok, it's no trouble :) Sometimes users don't realise they can upload over existing images, that's all. If the name is wrong then that's no trouble at all to be deleted. pfctdayelise (translate?) 23:24, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I am writing to you in regards to the panoramic photo of Strasbourg. It is a great photo and I would like to use it on a website (www.britishtours.com). Would you permit this? We would of course credit you.

Many kind regards,

Thanks for uploading Image:Rachel_Silverthorne_Mural_in_Muncy,_Pennsylvania_crop.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Locator map Templates

[edit]

HI, I put them in their own category because they were hidden in the main Category. I thought if people were looking for locator maps to add a city or a county, they would find them easier that way. There shouldn't really be any images in the Maps of Category only name links to more specific galleries or categories. What would you suggest? Licensing for Locator Maps

[edit]
I also replied on Kaldari's Wikipedia talk page

Hi Ruhrfisch, I'm writing to ask if you would consider licensing your locator maps as public domain rather than GFDL/cc-by-sa. There are several reasons this would be preferable. First of all, there is a convention of making generic unlabeled maps ("locator maps") public domain in Wikipedia as it ensures there are no re-licensing issues with subsequent uses and modifications of those maps. Secondly, it is unlikely that your modifications of the census bureau's map constitute enough "creative effort" to justify any relicensing (as you merely cropped the images and adjusted the colors). Thus it would be debatable whether or not your images are in fact public domain already in spite of the license notices. Thirdly, many of the images that your locator maps are replacing are public domain and there is some debate about whether it is preferable to switch to a "less free" image. Thanks for taking the time to consider this. Cheers. Kaldari 00:39, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have several questions (you can reply on my Wikipedia or Commons talk page, as you prefer). Which locator maps specifically do you mean, the 49 states? (User:VerruckteDan beat me to Delware) Would just GFDL be free enough? Can you point me to this convention as a policy or guideline here or on Commons? I based my current licensing on User:Ram-Man's maps (see Image:Map of Delaware County, Pennsylvania No Text.png as one example). They are quite similar to mine in source and effort. Could you please point me to the debate? Can you also give examples of the maps mine are replacing? I made the maps as they were consistent in style and followed the model of Image:US Locator Blank.svg stylistically.
I have not decided what to do regarding your request. I will say that the only reward I get with these maps (besides satisfaction) is attribution, which you are asking me to give up. Despite what comes across as a dismissal of my contributions, I have spent a lot of time and effort on these maps. If the maps are replacing others, then they must be perceived as better or more useful by the editors choosing to use them, so maybe my contributions are worth something. Finally, if GFDL is good enough for all my other contributions on Wikipedia, why isn't it good enough for the maps I've made? Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:26, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Hello, Ruhrfisch!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

The pics of Ricketts Glen are really nice. So far my favorite is the cabin. Very nice and a unique way of getting a picture of a cabin. Also I discovered a gallery tool and added it to my page. It makes viewing pics quite easy. Dincher (talk) 02:28, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for Image:Sixthfleet.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sixthfleet.gif. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 17:49, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There was a request on the English Wikipedia to move these two images here, which I did (without checking source quality first). I have played around looking for the image on the web site mentioned as the source (Carlisle Army War College) but cannot find it. I am OK with deleting it here and will put a PUI tag on the Englsih Wikipedia version. Thanks, Ruhrfisch (talk) 21:00, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Motivating QI oppose on pump house image

[edit]

Hi. I opposed a QI status for your image File:Black Moshannon SP Pump House 2.jpg. I gave two reasons on the candidate page. Firstly, I think the picture should be tilted about 1.5 degrees clockwise. Secondly, the background car is distracting in a picture like this. Beyond this, the grass in the foreground is somewhat overexposed. The first of these three can be easily corrected, but the other two would call for a reshoot. This is unfortunate, because I really like the mood of the image. Keep up the good work! /Dcastor (talk) 13:22, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Willa

Sure, as long as you attribute it to Ruhrfisch that is fine. You might prefer File:Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling Tower 1 crop.jpg as it focuses more on the tower. Ruhrfisch (talk) 15:37, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need some help

[edit]

I'm kind of a new user, and I was wondering how exactly you get the county map images that you have submitted. So far, I have submitted two county maps in New York (here they are: File:Chautauqua County, New York Divisions.png, File:Cattaraugus County, New York Divisions.png) by using the same source that you got all of your county maps from. However, in order to get maps of individual counties I had to put them in Paint and do a lot of erasing, copying, and pasting. Also, I couldn't get either of my maps as big as yours because I had to cut them directly from the U.S. census bureau source to put them in Paint. Is there a better/easier way to make maps of individual counties that look as good as this one? —Reelcheeper (talk) 18:35, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New York locator map with Adirondack Park and Rivers

[edit]

You did a locator map for New York State that included county lines, File:New York Locator Map.PNG. An older map, File:New York Adirondack.svg lacks the county lines, but has the Adirondack Park area shaded, and shows major rivers. Any chance you could combine the two? Not to replace the present Locator Map, but as a separate map for use on pages in and near the park. -- Mwanner (talk) 21:07, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks! I didn't realize it would be so labor intensive. Can you make an SVG version? I tried converting it myself, but without success-- I'm afraid I'm pretty clueless with image files. Thanks again, -- Mwanner (talk) 12:12, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Locator Map - Washington Counties

[edit]

I am sorry but I am not very conversant in how all of this works. I would like to use the Washington Counties locator map, as per the terms you have posted. The problem is, how do I put it on to my website?

I want to be able to use it with the hyperlinks to the county wiki pages, as it is used on the Wiki site for Washington's Counties. I have downloaded the map, uploaded it to my web domain, then put the programming for the map/hyperlinks in place - however - the way I have programmed it the map does not show up. If I do this:

<a href="/File:Washington_Locator_Map.PNG" class="image"><img alt="" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Washington_Locator_Map.PNG" width="400" height="256" /></a>

the map and the hyperlinks over the map are fine when I publish the website. But that is relying on the .png file that is with wikimedia.

I wanted to have it so it was self contained on my website and wasn't reliant on having to go to the wiki site to get the map file. I've tried variants of the above, substituting the location of the map .png file with where it is out on my domain site:

<a href="/File:Washington_Locator_Map.PNG" class="image"><img alt="" scr="//upload.scatnow.com/democracyworkshop/Washington_Locator_Map.PNG" width="400" height="256" /></a>

I've spent quite a bit of time on this but can never get the map to work like it does using the wiki url.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. I want to use it, give the proper attribution of course, but I cannot go further at this point. Any help you could give me would be very appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bethatuw (talk • contribs) 02:04, 16 November 2012‎ (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bethatuw, while I am fairly familiar with the Wiki software, I am not as conversant with HTML, and am afraid I cannot help you. My only suggestion is that I think you need to download the file (map) and then upload it on your website (not link to it here). It is also very difficult to figure out anything when you do not provide links to the website you are working on. Sorry, Ruhrfisch (talk) 18:58, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Pay attention to copyright
File:Wood Wasp female near exit hole.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. Thanks for uploading File:Hillsgrove Covered Bridge new deck section 3.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States - Thank You!

[edit]

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

If you're on Twitter, give us a follow @WLMUnitedStates for updates, news, and more.

If you have any questions between now or the end of the month, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:28, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:28, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:04, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Kitchen Creek in Ricketts Glen State Park

[edit]

Hello. I love your panoramic photo of Kitchen Creek in Ricketts Glen State Park. My wife and I would love to use it as a feature in our home, but the dpi is too low. We have searched for hours looking for a suitable photo and yours is perfect except for the dpi. Would you be willing/able to help me with a higher resolution or your original photos if easier for you??? Thanks in advance, John. jiver0405@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.111.25.122 (talk) 10:04, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Ulla Maps

[edit]

Hello and thank you for making a location map for Mount Ulla, NC. I am currently working on the article and would like to add a locator NC map but unfortunately don't know how to do it. Could you please help me if you have some time? I would also like to re-use this file (without the arrow pointing to Kannapolis) if you could help along with this as well. It would be good to add pointers for Mount Ulla Unincorporated and Bear Poplar Unincorporated, then this map can be re-used in two articles. Let me know if I can do anything. This is my first time reaching out for help, so I apologize if I am doing something the wrong way. Thank you!MtUllaHistorian (talk) 21:33, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I replied here on your Wikiepdia talk page. Ruhrfisch (talk) 17:53, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania County Locator maps

[edit]

Dear User Ruhrfisch,

I am writing a family history book (the 4th in a series) and had planned to use some of your Pennsylvania county locator maps in my book. I have used some of your other maps previously, but my publisher (Xlibris) has changed its policies and no longer accepts content from Wikimedia. Would it be possible for me to get them directly from you rather than downloading them from Wikimedia Commons?

The maps I need are for the following counties: Somerset, Cambria, Westmoreland, Butler and Beaver. By the way, I love your maps and your other contributions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

Duane Alwin

Hi Duane, sorry, but I no longer have the map files on my computer, so the Commons version are the only ones I have access to. The maps are all taken from US Census maps, here, so could you use those? Ruhrfisch (talk) 14:07, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations!

September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.

You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:21, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
