The Photographer's Barnstar
Thank you so much for your many excellent sports photographs, especially those of French women's association football players. Please accept this barnstar as a small token of my appreciation. Photographers like you are a huge reason why Wikimedia Commons is such an amazing resource. Merci beaucoup! Michael Barera (talk) 19:35, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Bien cordialement - Siren-Com (talk) 00:34, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:WikiCheese - Queso de Cabra con arandano 01.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:WikiCheese - Queso de Cabra con arandano 01.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

You're invited to provide input…

[edit]

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sécheresse - économisons l'eau.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Question from the CPUG Board

[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bonne année 2024 !

[edit]

Salut Pyb, I've restored following artworks by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer as his copyright expired today:

Is anything known about their exhibition history? I ask because we still need to check the copyright from an US perspective. File:Françoise Foliot - Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer - Sonate au clair de lune.jpg is absolutely no problem as it has been published in a catalogue in 1927 according to [52]. But the other two paintings are from private collections. Do you know more about them? Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 10:00, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AFBorchert Hi, unfortunately there is no more information. It might be picture taken at an exposition or directly in private collections. The family of a professional photographer gave to Wikimédia France an impressive collection of slides but the information is limited. Pyb en résidence (talk) 12:25, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
File:Françoise Foliot - Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer - Ève.jpg has been exhibited in 1896, see Yveling RamBaud, Petits Salons, Le Gaulois, 23 Janvier 1896, p. 3. --AFBorchert (talk) 15:40, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Pyb,

the signature of the painting suggests that it is actually a work by Georges de Feure, not one by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer. Can you investigate? Regards --Rosenzweig τ 21:24, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Pyb,

Merci. Image about the monument for the Spaniards who died for Freedom in Père-Lachaise

[edit]

Hello, you’ve uploaded File:Père-Lachaise - Division 97 - 24.jpg and a crop from this, where you’ve blurred the actual monument. There is also File:PARIS, Père Lachaise - I. und J. GALLO Denkmal f. 3500 span. Republikaner - 142.05.jpg which has to be deleted due to missing freedom of panorama, but what I want to know: Is there any known data about the creators I. and J. Gallo? Do they still live or when did they the last of them die? Who are they anyway? Could we otherwise assume this as a work by anonymous authors? The reason is, of course, to get a date when this file can be undeleted in the future. Since you are an admin you could delete it yourself, but let me nominate it for deletion, first. And has File:Mémoires De La Retirada Les 80 Ans De La Retirada Espagnole Au Cimetière Du Père Lachaise 02.webm not to be deleted for the same reason?

As an aside: There are more files with photos taken by the same author who are clear cases for the same reason:

Musee Quai Branly

[edit]

Hello,

I do posts online on Mesoamerican (Aztec, Maya etc) history and archeology, as well as occasionally do photography at museum exhibits to take photos I've always intended to upload here on Wikimedia, and work with friends to get their photos uploaded, which I'm slowly starting to do now!

I'm reaching out because the Musee Quai Branly in Paris currently has the "Mexica" exhibit running to October 6th, and I was really interested in getting a photographer to attend to take photos there, which they or I could then upload to Wikimedia with a CC-BY liscense. Since sadly I'm in the United States and can't go.

I was wondering both if you knew if the Wikimedia France chapter (which you apparently used to head/lead?) would be in a position to assist with that, either in finding a photographer, or getting in touch with the museum to see if they could sign off/agree to a special photography session (I also know somebody who knows somebody who worked on the exhibit who may be able to help... otherwise, I intend to just have somebody attend/take photos as a general visitor), and if that was something you personally were interested in photographing?

Let me know if you have any input on the former, or are interested in the latter. Obviously i'd be happy to compensate you for taking the time to go/for the CC-BY licenses, since I see you normally upload only in CC-BY-SA, which isn't as loose.

Thank you!
