Thanks for uploading File:Ivan Zemljak Elementary School.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Stop drive-by decategorization of files which you don’t like. Deleted files will disappear from categories without your intervention, whereas for kept files it is harmful. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 05:48, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

File:Nahuatl Tlaxcalteca.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Te Wiki o Te Tangata Whenua (Indigenous Peoples Week), Aug 4-10 @timeunlimited @localtravels @nuttisamisiida -tekupu -ipw4 (14496690785).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

This kind of file should not be uploaded to Commons because we already have a copy. See File:Kochi Jewish Synagogue C.jpg. Language maps
[edit]Hi, can you please avoid including modern borders in Indigenous language maps, if possible? File:Wakashan map.svg, for example, has the US-Canada border in two locations. Borders are created by theft of Indigenous land and are not part of those languages, especially since in a lot of cases these are "pre-contact" maps. Thanks. Myrhonon (talk) 19:31, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Myrhonon: Hey! I agree that borders are anti indigenous and generally inappropriate for pre-contact maps. The inclusion of borders, however, can often present a specific benefit when portraying languages that cross a border or landlocked languages. When portraying the Osage people for instance (File:Osage map.svg), the inclusion of internal state borders allows viewers to understand the peoples' pre-contact distribution and reservation in relation to the modern US. states of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma as opposed to a difficult to discern location in the US midwest. A similar example is the distribution of the Shawnee people in File:Algic map.svg. I would be definitely be open to creating multiple versions of precontact map files (going forward) with and without borders. Noahedits (talk) 07:12, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Noahedits. Thank you for your work on South Sulawesi languages! South Sulawesi topics (history, language and people) are some of my main interests here in wiki, so I really appreciate it. I'll translate it into Indonesian, if you don't mind. Also, I just want to let you know that I admire your map works, they are elegant and aren't cluttered like mine (see this nightmare for example, LOL). Lastly, this is perhaps asking too much, but if you have time to make more language maps featuring Maritime Southeast Asia, please do so! Masjawad99 (talk) 15:32, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Masjawad99: Of course! I would love if you translated them (into Bahasa Indonesia and any other languages you may know haha). As for the Maritime Southeast Asia maps, I'll definitely add them to my to do list.
Nahuatl map labeled.svg
[edit]Hi Noahedits, nice work on the Nahuatl map! I found one mistake: You have two dialects labeled "Tetelcingo Nahuatl", 10 and 14. I think 14 is Tetelcingo and 10 is Temascaltepec Nahuatl. Also there is one dialect that is not on the map, Tabasco Nahuatl (nhc). But since it's not on the Ethnologue maps either, it would be kind of hard to locate. Maybe that can be a future update. Benjaminb (talk) 14:48, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Benjaminb: Done! The error is fixed and Tabasco Nahuatl is added. I would love to hear any other feedback and/or any requests for other maps relating to indigenous subjects and/or endangered languages.

Hi Noahedits, I saw your Rumsen language image for body parts and nicely done! I was wondering if I could make some revisions because Pinart's orthography is very outdated and inconsistent. I've been studying Rumsen for about four years now, so I was hoping I could make some edits on your image. Get back to me soon! Thanks
- @DCBlisted: Hi! It’s so wonderful to hear from you!
- Please update the image with the new orthography or alternatively send me the text and I’ll update the file myself.
- Please also feel free to send me any other Rumsen word sets; I’ll be more than happy to create similar diagrams. Noahedits (talk) 19:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Perfect! I'll get on it :) Is it possible to send me the template picture so I can add in the text? Or if you'd prefer to do it yourself, I can send the text over.
- @DCBlisted: If you click on the image on the File:Rumsen body parts.svg page and then right click on the larger image it should give you the option to save the file as an svg that you can edit in illustrator. If you aren't familiar with editing SVG files, just send me the text and I'd be happy to do it myself.Noahedits (talk) 06:14, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Done! This is my first time doing something with an .svg. I'll try to send it over. To be fair, I'm not familiar with Wikipedia, so how exactly would you like the file? Would you like to upload it yourself?

[edit]I love your maps! I was wondering if you could make one for the Iñupiaq language wiki? There are four major dialects that you can see here. You can see the dialect boundaries here as well. There are also some subdialects, which I could consult you on, if interested. --2601:240:CB80:8770:B9C4:6041:EA61:4453 22:42, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- It took me a couple months to find the time but check this out: File:Iñupiaq language map.svg! Hope this is along the lines of what you're looking for. Noahedits (talk) 18:09, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- This is an awesome map! A few corrections: Malimiut is spoken in Shaktoolik and Unalakleet in addition to Koyuk. A couple Malimiut villages are missing names: Deering and Buckland (left to right). North Slope village missing names are Point Lay, Nuiqsut, and Kaktovik (left to right). The Teller to Shaktoolik dialect shade is not needed (those are all just Qawiaraq). Thanks a ton! Chipileño and Plautdietsch language maps
[edit]Hi, I love your maps, and I was wondering if you could make a language map for Chipilo Venetian and another one for Mexican Plautdietsch. The first map would be the state of Puebla (Mexico) map with Chipilo Venetian language area (the land of the city Chipilo de Javier Mina) like the Zapotec map you've made with Oaxaca map. The second map would be all Mexico map with Plautdietsch language area like the Tarahumara map you've made. You can see Plautdietsch language area here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Languages-of-Mexico.png and here: https://joshuaproject.net/people_groups/13677/MX. Thank you in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Languaeditor (talk • contribs) 01:37, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
Shapefiles for language maps
[edit]Like most people, your language maps are very helpful as I'm doing my own version(s) of these for a different project. I'm curious if you have shapefiles or if you work only in vector-editing software. For smaller language areas especially, such as the various Yokutsan dialects, having something I could overlay on other geographies would be extremely helpful. Thanks. Eskaleut map
[edit]Hi. File:Eskimo–Aleut -01.svg is a beautiful map. Unfortunately, several languages are misidentified -- Inuviaaluktun, Inuktitut and Inuktun. E.g., Inuktitut is an official language of Nunavut (and the primary language after English), but according to your map isn't spoken there. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:54, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your uto-Aztecan map
[edit]Hi, I just wanted to thank you for your map of Uto-Aztecan languages. It is really good. I would just suggest that Tarahumara and Guarijio (better spelled Warihio) should have the same colour and not be grey, and that the label for Guachichil should be moved a little towards the south. File tagging File:Buffalo calf woman.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Buffalo calf woman.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Buffalo calf woman.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
