First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Commons:Deletion requests). Congrats! Yes, I opposed you but I switched at the last minute on reflection: I don't think you'll do anything damaging. However, I hope you take my concerns on board, and be nice to all newcomers, especially if you disagree with them. Happy editingdeleting! Majorly (talk) 23:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Поздравления!!! I see you're doing some good work already ;-) --Boricuæddie 00:07, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the club! A refresh of Commons:Licensing might be useful though, re Wikipedia only permissions [1]. Наслаждайтесь! --Para 14:59, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly the guy who tagged this was not all there at the time, yet you blindly go and delete the image anyway. If you'd actually read the description page, at all, you would have seen it tagged as user created public domain... what more do you want? If you're not prepared to check things before you delete them, don't delete them. – Gurch 06:38, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really beginning to get pissed off here. Again some sysop (you in this case) deleted one of the pictures i've uploaded without even leaving me a message. What's up with the zombie like admins here?!!?? Multichill 21:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You also deleted Image:Bambitreffenkassa02.jpg and Image:DragonTeeth.jpg. Please undelete the 3 pictures. Multichill 21:56, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Multichill. These images were not properly specifying a source; saying that it comes from nlwiki isn't enough, you should have the original source info there. I've restored the image, and hopefully you can fix them. User:Filbot tagged the images for deletion... you should have received a template, to your bot's talkpage. Maxim(talk) 13:39, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Belzec staff.jpg

[edit]

Hello! I noticed that you deleted the photograph showing members of Belzec staff, in spite of the valid license and given source. How come? Torvindus 21:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That would be an error on my part, as I missed the permission. I'm sorry for this inconvenience; your image is now back. Maxim(talk) 13:41, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Robot-speed deletions

[edit]

It is apparent from your log that you are indiscriminately deleting images previously in Category:Unknown using TW. I want to let you know that there is a huge impact if images are used on lots of Wikimedia projects. Please be careful next time, and to ensure that already-fixed files do not get deleted, please access the category manually and take it slow, or use Magnus's tool. Thanks, 哦,是吗?(O-person) 22:31, 23 January 2008 (GMT)

Has he actually deleted any wrongly? Take a look at my delete log - I clear out that category at robot speed but every image is manually checked before. I expect Maxim does the same. Majorly (talk) 00:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've deleted less than five images out of 1500 deletions wrongly. My talkpage above is the record of all the incorrect deletions. What I do when I'm clearing out a category is first inspect it throughly with Magnus's tool; I saw myself all the extra clicks by using Twinkle. If you're interested in this tool, it's located in my simple.js, as it doesn't seem to work in monobook for some reason... Maxim(talk) 13:46, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maxim, it would be helpful to check which pages used the files you delete, and remove the links ;-) I don't know if I only encountered and accidental example [3], or if there are more... Which doesn't mean I'm not thankful for the work you (and others) do: Thanks :) --Jonas kork 15:28, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You deleted the above-mentioned image, and the OTRS team is acquiring permission and license information. May we assume you have no issues with it being restored once proper sourcing and license information have been obtained? :) ~Kylu (u|t) 01:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all. I deleted some OTRS-pending images when they just stick around on forever... I don't have OTRS access so I'm not too sure of how the system works, but I'm completely fine with it being restored. :-) Maxim(talk) 12:45, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You said Image description is satisfactory now... why? "You are most welcome to use this photo in Wikipedia (all languages)" is not the same as PD, nor is it an accetable license on Commons or on any Wikipedia (as per WMF policy). All images must be free to use by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose, modifications must be allowed, commercialuse must be allowed, etc. Please clarify -- Duesentrieb 00:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was a simple oversight on my part. I've deleted the image. Maxim(talk) 02:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did was this image satisfactory according to you? It looks like a screenshot to me. -- Bryan (talk to me) 21:08, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was an oversight by me. In Bad Old Ones, it didn't look like a screenshot to me, so I "passed" it. On much closer inspection, it's definitely a copyvio. Thanks for spotting that. :-) Maxim(talk) 21:17, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok that's ok. I am looking through your contributions now and found some other problems:
That's what I spotted on the first look. There are more of such judgement errors in your contributions, and therefore I don't really feel quite comfortable giving you a bot flag yet. I think you need some more experience before performing mass deletions. Feel free to ask help :) -- Bryan (talk to me) 21:34, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Just noticed that you had deleted Image:Stamp album page.jpg according to this log because the image was being used on en:Stamp album that is on my watchlist, and I believe the licence can be made quite proper, so if you restore it I can easily do that though I may not be able to source it. Cheers Ww2censor 04:13, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! This image was deleted by you using Twinkle. After uploading it was marked as unsourced, but right after that I added all required information on the description page. Could you restore this image? Dstary 02:27, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My bad, sorry about the inconvenience. Maxim(talk) 20:29, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, is this working on Wikimedia Commons, and if so, how do I use it, which subpage off of my userpage should I put it in? Thanks for your time, Cirt 08:29, 8 March 2008 (UTC) (Cirt on English Wikipedia)[reply]

I use a few adminscripts here. I was originally planning to bring more scripts and modify them for use at Commons, but that kinda broke off. What Twinkle script(s) do you want to use here? Maxim(talk) 11:46, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Stuff that would make it easier to nom things for deletion, warn vandals, I guess that's pretty much it for now. Is that possible? Cirt 18:41, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, there isn't much of a vandal probem at Commons, for deletion I might be able to make a hack, although I'll need to figure out the templates. Also, TW doesn't seem to work in monobook for some reason, so that might prove a minor obstacle. Maxim(talk) 20:33, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you could figure it out for the deletion process, I'd really appreciate that. Cirt 03:59, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So until you can get the deletion process thing figured out, what non-admin stuff is Commons:Twinkle good for on Commons? Cirt 06:56, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cirt, I've looked around and I'm really not the best person to do this kind of stuff. I suggest you ask the creator, User:AzaToth; he told me over IRC yesterday that this might involve quite a bit of modifying and I kinda suck at programming js. Maxim(talk) 16:33, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, no prob, will do, thanks for your help. Cirt 10:42, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:World-cannabis-laws.png

[edit]

Hey. Can you please look at deleted revisions and confirm that your deletion of Image:World-cannabis-laws.png was appropriate? The image was widely used and has a lengthy talk page at en:Image talk:World-cannabis-laws.png. I have to ask because I have seen too many good images deleted for lacking a license/source, when in fact the image page had been vandalized. Thanks, Prolog 20:46, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly yes it was appropriate, there was absolutely no license info. Maxim(talk) 21:54, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just after leaving you a message, I thought of checking the Wayback Machine. This showed that the image seemed to be appropriately under GFDL-self in February 2007, similarly as the same uploader's Image:European-cannabis-laws.png. What happened to the license information after that? There seems to be a French translation of the image here, by the way. Thanks again, Prolog 22:31, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stop deleting my userpage template, there is nothing wrong with it. That is called vandalizing a page.--Blackwatch21 22:50, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There's no difference.--Blackwatch21 00:07, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, the template-space isn't used for things like that. Trust me. Raise the issue at Commons:Village pump if you don't believe me. Maxim(talk) 00:51, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, no one has wanted to use that template so far so you send me a message if someone does. BW21.--Blackwatch21 01:22, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't have a templated license tag. I don't know what motopark was doing in reverting you, but a revert by an experienced image tagger of the creator seems to not mark a file as disputed. You deleted this image with the log 14:56, 6 April 2008 Maxim (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:MaxvonBaden.jpeg" ‎ (Deleted because "In category Unknown as of 27 March 2008; no license/permission/source". using TW). Can you double-check the text surrounding the picture to determine if the photo is pre-1923? If there is no text, can you say for certain that the subject is no older than 55 years old? If so, then it predates 1923, as the subject was born on 10 July 1867. If it does pre-date 1923, can you restore it and put the appropriate (c) tag? If it does not or you are not sure, can you upload it to the English Wikipedia as a fair-use image for en:Prince Maximilian of Baden? Thanks. By the way, I asked] Dmcdevit to undelete the English version, but it's been deleted so long I'm not sure if he can. Obviously, if the image is in the public domain it should be here not there. Deletion of John Leavitt gravestone photo from Suffield, Connecticut wikipedia entry

[edit]

I cannot understand why this photo was deleted. After I uploaded it, I attempted to explain repeatedly (left repeated messages) that the photo was taken by a cousin who emailed it to me and release all rights to the photo, explicitly telling me that I could use it for whatever purpose I saw fit. As a former journalist, I cannot imagine how anyone could construe using a photo under those conditions as a copyright violation. I attempted to explain this repeatedly on the Commons, but never received a response. In any case, what do I need to do to attempt to reinstate the photo? Thank you.MarmadukePercy 06:30, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, apparently there was a licensing problem with the logo of Übersetzergemeinschaft in the German WP. I now see that there were some requests on the Commons board but I never checked in there before (didn't know one should). Now that you took the logo out, could you please restore it and I'll look into what exactly is required to make the licensing as it should be. In fact I was quite confident that I had done everything correctly: at least I got permission from the artist who created the logo and included it in the database---okay it was German only but hey...

spasibo ot novichoka --WernR 13:22, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maxim, please reply to my comments above. I really would like to have that logo back on our WP entry (where it belongs), so please fill me in on what to do! Hey, I'm new here (though old everywhere else...) WernR 18:26, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was away. I'm sorry for the late response, I looked only today at my mailbox and saw a notice that you've been asking for help. ;-) You need to add a license to any file you upload. I can only understand a few words of German and they're rather offensive. :O So when you upload file, go to the dropdown list of license and pick the correct one. Hope that helps, Maxim(talk) 01:28, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what you mean here, sorry: Since you already deleted the logo, I cannot find it. PLease tell me where to go from here :-) 21:32, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I just received a message about an uploaded image, Check-reference.png, this image was self-made and is in public domain,I guess I wasn´t able to upload correctly the info on the image, can the deletion be reverted? I'm a new user, please send me info. thank you.

Hmm, it seems to be up. Are you sure it's the right fiel? Maxim(talk)

Hey Maxim, I was wondering if you mind if I use your signature. It's pretty nice, if you don't want me to use it then I will listen to you and remove it. Thank you for your time --Kanonkas(talk) 16:24, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seal

[edit]

Hello I noted that you've deleted Image:Seal of Jamtland.png, as stated in that image the seal comes from this flag, which I stated when I uploaded the seal. Could you please restore it? //Heimvennar 23:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There was no license on it. If I restore the image, are you going license it? Maxim(talk) 23:30, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure though I am unsure which license to use, should I insert the one from the flag (from which the seal is taken) or is there a better one? //Heimvennar 10:20, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK restore it now, I'll license it. //Heimvennar 17:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle

[edit]

So what's the status on this tool? I've seen you using it (and making evil WP: shortcuts to it!! ;). Does it work ok on Commons now? If so, how can we make use of it? Hopefully, we're working towards a single MW page we can includePage to monobook.js. It seems kinda all spread out and confusing right now. Sorry if you're not the person to ask. Cheers, Rocket000 16:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I import the Scripts for personal use. If you need to use a script, you can just copy the source from the enwiki version, although if there's a need for a more-Commons specific script and even put in Gadgets, that's possible. Maxim(talk) 19:54, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. No, someone just asked me about it. I tried importing awhile ago and I couldn't get it to work even after Commonifing it. Personally, I don't think there's much of a need here, although once in awhile I wish I had it. Rocket000 17:16, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm a newbie and I saw you deleted my own work picture F1A_launch.jpg with claim that "In category [[w:commons::Category:Unknown as of 5 April 2008|Unknown" I don't understand where I can fill up the Category. [edit]

Hey Maxim, I noticed you deleted an image I posted up... my first one. But I am really not sure why you deleted it. There was a bot reference on my talk page saying it had some trouble with the license, but if an actual human looked I'd be amazed if they didn't see everything needed. A full citation to the license along with original sources was there, the only possibility is that the license the image was posted under (free for use from the New Zealand government) was somehow not acceptable to wiki media. Assuming that is not the case, could you help me recover the image please? Thank you, Robbie. Robbiemuffin 01:24, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mean time there are articles that count on these images to be there, so you are basically screwing people for nothing. Is this why you want to be an admin here? Newbie1980 (talk) 08:27, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have to make a note of it in the permissions box, with a template like {{OTRS-pending}}. When the permission is verified, the image can be safely restored. Maxim(talk) 13:53, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted because "universally replaced". using TW

[edit]

When you delete such files you need to give the real reason for deletion. That reason is usually the same as the reason for replacing the files. "Deleted because universally replaced" is almost like circular reasoning, since files are usually replaced because they are going to be deleted. /Ö 21:38, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did I really only put that in? LOL. I usually put in the fact that they're usually dupes, this is, I hope, only one such mistake. :D Maxim(talk) 23:44, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unsource

[edit]

Hello, Maxim! You know, I have spent long time while tagging. Not sure why are you deleting my edits, and remove tags. I think this is a vary bad usage of admin tool (That doesn't mean you're so, for sure! ;)). "pd-art" isn't a reason for keeping images that lack source (If so, please give a link to a policy that says that!). Now, excuse me, restore my edits, and rev yours. Remember that you're an admin, losing people time will let them hate supporting us at Commons (They're many doing so!) Thank you for your understanding --OsamaK 20:31, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I made some deletions that I decided were not correct. It's easier to keep an edit deleted than to revert a tagging. --Maxim(talk) 21:02, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not really, You can remove the tag (And you have no reason to do!) using a bot. Removing edits from page history (Which are not vandals) is one reason to remove admin tools, In Arabic Wikipedia -at least!-. Please discus before doing such this actions, Should other admins fix your mistakes?--OsamaK 08:18, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, if you haven't noticed already, this isn't the arabic wikipedia. Maxim(talk) 15:54, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Relax, and read this page and this one. Problem was bit, and it was solved quickly. Happy editing.--OsamaK 20:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry for your attitude with Osamak. Osama has approched you with good faith, your replay reflected none. Your personal feelings about an image are not enough to tag it as PD, or remove a no source tag. As you already know, a source is needed for a PD tag. --Tarawneh (talk) 00:52, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help!

[edit]

Could you explain why "Image:JGWhittier-loc.jpg" was deleted so quickly and without warning me first? I thought I had done pretty well explaining the image and, as far as I remember, it had a source and permission template. If not, I could more easily fix it if I was informed before it was deleted. The image is 120+ years old and easily falls under PD-Old; it's also a Library of Congress image in the PD. --Midnightdreary (talk) 12:28, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You need a copyright tag; you had {{LOC-image}}, without the ID as well. Should I restore it so you can add the LOC ID and the copyright tag? As for the informing part, if you don't pick a license in Special:Upload, it automatically puts the {{Nld}} on the page, placing in the category for deletion. Maxim(talk) 16:05, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If it's possible to restore it, I'll give it a go and see if I can complete the missing info. I assume, then, that the LOC template does not include license? I suppose a better one would just be the PD-old template. What do you think? --Midnightdreary (talk) 22:08, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Apologies for my slowness... Maxim(talk) 00:21, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No apologies necessary; you've been very helpful. I've added all the info that I think it needed. --Midnightdreary (talk) 03:47, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This the first time someone's called me helpful in a image restoration matter, after I've deleted it myself... :O Maxim(talk) 12:50, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was a rather pleasant exchange; no complaints here. Although, for some reason, the file still says it lacks licensing info, despite the PD-old template. Am I missing something? (Sorry to keep bothering you about this one) --Midnightdreary (talk) 00:30, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I was successful in getting my user name moved/renamed. But, when I go to complete the Unified Login option, I see that ru:User:El Greco, on the Russian Wikipedia is one of the user names under my control (an Attached Account). Did you by any chance create that account, because I can say without any doubt that I didn't create it (just for the simple reason that I don't speak or understand Russian). If you didn't create it then I ask the other admins who were involved in my renaming process. El Greco (talk) 21:48, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't create that; you'll have to ask for a rename, at w:ru:Википедия:Запросы на узурпацию. Maxim(talk) 00:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are you in a position to delete that account or do I ask over at Russian Wiki? that account never existed up until the day I had my user name renamed. El Greco (talk) 23:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Is it possible to undelete Image:2003-2008 Renaissance Paris Wagram Hotel, Paris.jpg, please. The uploader User:Alanya Knowles was apparently inexperienced and had omitted some of the required mentions. But this image has OTRS confirmation through ticket 2008031910023091, where the relevant mentions are indicated and they could be added to the description page. Thanks. I essentially transferred the information as it appears in the description page on the French-language Wikipédia, where this image was uploaded at 11:20, 21 January 2008 by User:Portzamparc Francais, and the OTRS ticket added by User:~Pyb, which I mentioned in the edit summary, so, with all those informations, interested people should be able to verify the validity. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:07, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undete request

[edit]

Hi Maxim,
would you object or consent to a tentative undelete of Image:Bettina von Arnim.jpg that you deleted this morning due to missing source? I do not criticize you for the deletion, as it was no-source-tagged since 7 days. Only, it seems the image was widely used (see [4]) and is surely PD as the depicted subject (de:Bettina von Arnim) died in 1859. Though I'm not in the edit history of that image, I would then try to get the missing data from other user on :de. --Túrelio (talk) 08:10, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maxim, you recently deleted the image mentioned above because it was "In category Unknown as of 27 June 2008; no license/permission/source". However, if the filename describes the picture accurately, then it displays a self-portrait by the painter Böcklin who died in 1901, therefore it is clearly {{PD-old}} (or {{PD-Art}}) by now. Could you please check and possibly restore this image? Thanks! --UV (talk) 08:32, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undelete request

[edit]

Hi there, would you please be so kind and undelete the following pics:

All the Pics are well tagged with information of author, source and a valid license. Please take a look at the pics you delete. The Copyright tags that i used are maybe out of date, but there are valid. Thanks. diba (talk) 10:48, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While I don't remember exactly what I was thinking when I deleted those images, I think it's more of me being tripped up by a very unfamiliar tag when looking at it in BadOldOnes. Maxim(talk) 18:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

Do you really think that an empty (all-white) 50×50 image requires any “license/permission/source” (in addition to {{PD-ineligible}})? I don’t.

--Mormegil (talk) 14:56, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Argh. I thought my script had botched part of the deletion (it's a bug: the script deletes the image, and not the description page.) Of course, it's PD-inelegible. Maxim(talk) 18:23, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the bigger problem is that CommonsDelinker has already removed the image from the pages using it, and it’s quite hard to fix that now… (somewhere around [5]). --Mormegil (talk) 08:57, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's bit hard if you flow this comment.--OsamaK 12:01, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Maxim. Long time no see! I have nominated an image that you deleted, Image:Friedman dinner.jpg, for undeletion, and I just wanted to let you know in case you want to comment. (I have no doubt that your deletion was in good faith, of course, and I applaud your work in tackling the Category:Unknown backlog.) All the best, Quadell (talk) 17:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

George Bellows paintings

[edit]

Hello, I just noticed that you deleted a host of paintings by George Wesley Bellows (from the CommonsDelinker removing them from the Wikipedia article on Bellows). I'm not an admin on Commons so I can't view the deleted history of those images and how they were identified, but as Bellows died in 1925, they should have all been tagged with Template:PD-Art (expired after life of artist + 70); indeed, that's how the remaining members of Category:George Wesley Bellows are tagged. Unless there was some other issue with those images, please restore them. Thanks! Postdlf (talk) 00:56, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They had inadequate sourcing; to fully justify public-domain, you need to specify from where the image came from. Maxim(talk) 01:15, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're doubting they were actually paintings by Bellows? Was that honestly in question? I'm sure these can be easily validated as authentically his, as Bellows is not exactly an obscure artist. Postdlf (talk) 19:38, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete files that had clear permission indicated in the description, while falsely claiming that it was missing permission information - did you even look at the page and read it. Please restore.

Hi Maxim, perhaps you are interested to learn that there was quite some uproar on the German wikisource project and at the German language forum at Commons regarding the deletion of this image by you. (Your name, however, was not mentioned. The comments are somewhat heated against the "deletion mania" at Commons, they are not directed personally against any fellows here.) The problem is that images like this one were uploaded at a time when the new rules regarding templates etc. were not yet implemented and uploaders do sometimes miss any notices left to them as they are no longer active here. The main point is that it is not helpful to the project to impose new rules on old uploads as this could end in unnoticed permanent losses.

Another point is that this image was used by the German wikisource project. That was to be seen at the image page as it belonged to this category. The German Wikisource folks would be very happy to get noticed whenever there is an issue with one of the images they are using. You might want to contact the German Wikisource directly (they happily converse in English, if necessary) or Historiograf who is active here and also an admin at the German Wikisource project. Please note that I am not personally involved in this particular issue nor active at any Wikisource project. I just noticed the heated discussions and I think you should know this.

This image has been meanwhile restored by a German speaking admin who followed the talk at Commons:Forum. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 19:07, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted this image here: Image:Hayasaa.jpg because it was reportedly missing a license. Did anyone let its creator know it was in the uncategorized section or could someone have placed a license for it? Perhaps that image was uploaded a few years ago when Wikipedia's image laws were more liberal. What I'm driving at is that this image was important for this article as a point of reference: [6] Now there is nothing to show where this ancient kingdom was located. Can the image ever be restored again? Just curious. --Leoboudv (talk) 23:39, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh, Philadelphia flags

[edit]

The images Image:Flag of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.png and Image:Flag of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.png were deleted by you and I was wondering if you could undelete them. Both flags (from what I gather) were deleted because they had an obsolete tag, but both only needed to have an {{PD-US}} tag added to them (as both flags were adopted before 1923). I would've taken care of it but, alas, I had no warning until they disappeared from various articles. I put in an an undeletion request, but nothing seems be happening (I apologize if it seems like I'm not being patient). --Dtbohrer (talk) 02:14, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mass Deletion of Mommsen-Images

[edit]

Could you tell me, what's getting in you? Is it so hard to use the brain for some deletionist admins? Mommsen is dead since 1903. The Images ARE Public Domain. As example: Image:Theodor Mommsen 10.jpg - made in 1891. Do you really think, this image isn't PD? I can't understand this policy and I will not accept it. I don't see, that this is in the interrest of the project and I don't belive the majority of the users see it in my way. But some seems to like to delete. Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:11, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Marcus, I've restored the image. I'm really unsure now of the deletion; if ChrisIPK wants them deleted, he can go to COM:DR. In the future, can you please not barge onto my talk with such an aggressive tone; it's unnecessary to call me brainless, you gain nothing by doing so... Mass removal of images by Smith609

[edit]

Hi,

I'm no copyright expert, but as I noted in my edits to these images, they appear to fall within the "fair use" criteria; I requested in my edits that they be moved to Wikipedia so they could continue to be used, and the templates appeared to give direction for how this could be achieved. Are you able to complete this move?

Thanks,

Smith609/Martin (talk) 16:29, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I messed up the deletion summary (ie forgot to put one :s). The problem is, Commons does not accept fair use; and on enwiki, I don't think those image pass en:WP:NFCC#1 (no free alternative), as I think one can be made in this case. So I'm afraid that I will have to decline to move them to WP. Maxim(talk) 02:51, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions

[edit]

Hi Maxim! It seems you have deleted some images of mine such as in here [7]. Could you kindly warn me on my userpage before making such deletions, so that I have time to respond and bring necessary information? Unfortunately, I do not "Watch" my uploads (it should be automatical for a creation, as on other Wikis, and I have always forgotten to click the "Watch" box, and now, with about 2000 images uploaded this is not really something I can correct), and if you don't warn me I just discover deletions after the fact. Cheers PHGCOM (talk) 04:23, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is the responsibility of the tagger to notify the uploader; I've restored the image so you could fix the sourcing issue. I've checked your last 500 uploads and haven't found anything that I've deleted, so if there's anything else I've missed, don't hesitate to ping me. Maxim(talk) 20:05, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ALL these pictures are familyproperty (for he is my great-grand-father) I ALLOWED them to be shown and mentioned also the source.

can you please tell me why you felt responsible to delete them and put them where they were? its here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Plankensteiner

they are valuable for the public, because its the first release! can you please answer me on: csad3878@uibk.ac.at

I hope this hole thing doesnt take to long, because I work with this page in university.

thanx matthias
Staubnadel 17:14, 21 November 2008 (CET)

Your permission is not OK--it's your grand-father's work, and not yours. If he released it, it's fine, if not, get his permission, or if he's not around anymore, it becomes in the public domain 70 years after his passing.--Maxim(talk) 14:54, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

can you please in general work more carefully. not grandfather but "great-grand-father" I wrote. means long dead. I mean I got even his courtfiles! why every newspaper would be allowed to print it? why every archive has open doors for me?

I am anyway ( I hate to say this) born in "one line". I got the permission from his son (my grandfather) from my father (his greatson) and I give your mine (as his grat-grand-son)

so everything "THE FAMILY" handed me.

I suggest we write "FAMILY PLANKENSTEINER" as a source. e? and now tell me there is a problem.

I thought the idea here is to spread new material. Or is it only bout repeating old knowledge?

maybe we work together the best if you tell me straight - before deleting - what you need (I am not the first one telling you that).

so what do you need maxim?

and please can you make sure that all the previously carefully put dates at the pictures are still there when you restored them?

if we dont come to an agreement... do you have a supervisor or does wiki have a system of a secound opinion?

Third time this month

[edit]

This is the third time this month I have had to draw your attention to a "falsely-reasoned deletion" which has to be overturned by other administrators. PLEASE stop using your "Delete" button so liberally, and seek input from more experienced administrators. Sherurcij (talk) 23:32, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, I've been an admin for almost a year here, I'm hardly inexperienced. Secondly—what are the second and third deletions? Maxim(talk) 02:01, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This one was actually my mistake, I didn't realise you'd deleted the self-tagged one and not the good one with near-identical name -- just other than a polite "please use deletion summaries", I suppose this time my case is invalid and I apologise for brusqueness. I do still think you need to seriously look at your history of deletions though, but will withdraw this one. Merry Christmas, btw. Sherurcij (talk) 02:26, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, the image was in Category:Unknown for over seven days—do you suggest a better deletion summary? Considering I use a tool to help speed up button clicking, it's easy to use a long summary without being forced to copy/paste it all the time. Maxim(talk) 02:29, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Request for deletion by uploader" or something is usually used on such articles Sherurcij (talk) 02:35, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Was this a mistake?

The village pump image was just deleted. Did you do that on purpose? It seems to me that it had the proper license info before it was deleted. Soap (talk) 02:13, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted File:File:Röntgenröhre.jpg (edit · last · history · watch · unwatch · global usage · logs · purge · w · search · links · DR · del · undel · Delinker log), which was uploaded as "eigenes Bild" (uploader's own photograph) with the motivation that it was missing source information. This file did have copyright and permission information, the website which we got it from, as well as specific permission from the website owner to use the picture how we like. I am wondering if this information was lost when it was deleted from Wikipedia and moved to Commons. Can we have an undelete on one of these two (I guess I wasn't informed prior to deletion because I uploaded it to Wikipedia not Commons), because one of them did have copyright information for quite sometime. --Enzuru (talk) 02:20, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Dupes by Captmondo

[edit]

Hello there. I just ran across this with a comment from you saying "I'm unsure why the rest should be deleted, so I'm calling it kept." The relevant information appears in at least one of the files which states "Location tag in filename ("BeijingMuseumOfNaturalHistory") is incorrect; new image with the correct location ("PaleozoologicalMuseumOfChina") has been uploaded to WikiCommons to replace this one Captmondo". I methodically uploaded new images for all of those and simply changed the name (and the file type to "JPG") so all of these in the list are dupes.

Is it possible to remove those remaining in this list? Can I re-nominate?

As an aside, you could have asked me for further clarification instead of just leaping to "kept" status for the remaining images. Don't get me wrong, clearly the information wasn't readily available for every image, and I missed out on the original conversation somehow, but it wouldn't have hurt to ask first. Captmondo (talk) 04:06, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, ok. I understand what you wanted now. I've overturned my initial close and I've deleted the rest of the images. Maxim(talk) 14:54, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I wanted to know why did you deleted this picture when it's evident that its autor (L.ANGERER, 1827-1879) is dead from more than 70 years. This is a nineteenth-century old picture like all other Wagner's ones present on WikiCommons. If you have other reasons for why this picture must be deleted please i'm curious to know them. Thanks --Nicolago (talk) 18:00, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I must have missed your justification that it's PD (it was in Italian, my understanding skills in Italian are not very sharp). I deleted the image since it was missing a copyright tag, which is needed to see how the image is licensed without knowing 200 languages. I've restored and fixed the file for you. Please review deletion of State Department image

[edit]

Please review this deletion:

File:Monuc peacekeepers.jpg ‎ (Missing essential information: license/permission/source)

My notes indicate that it was uploaded as a US State Department image. Perhaps you missed something on the image description page or history?

--InfantGorilla (talk) 22:30, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The source was http://www.state.gov/p/io/pkpg/ , but that page does not contain the above file. Maxim(talk) 15:52, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think that a source removing an image was reason for a speedy deletion when the image is in use by Wikimedia projects (but I don't keep up to date with the speedy criteria.) As far as I recall, the original upload wasn't mine (I could be wrong.) Do you think the image was never available from the source that was claimed? --InfantGorilla (talk) 22:14, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. About a month ago you deleted the file Silviaregina bebeto dunga.jpg with the reason "Missing essential information: license/permission/source". This image was cropped from the original photo you deleted. Is it should be deleted too? Crazy Ivan (talk) 16:28, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, so I deleted it. Giggy (talk) 16:31, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wayne Schoenfeld photo

[edit]

Hi Maxim,

I don't know if you remember this case but a few months ago you've deleted this photograph Wayne Schoenfeld.jpg because there was a missing permission. The thing was that the photographer who took the picture sold us the picture and the rights to use it. I've sent an email to permissions but some how this didn't work. I finally reached the photographer of the picture and told him to send an email to permission himself, what he did two days ago. Is it possible to restore the picture in commons or do we have to start from the beginning? Thank you. Regards, --Exeko (talk) 14:24, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Coats of several states of Africa

[edit]

You deleted several coats, you affected several pages in spanish wikipedia, please before delete a very used images you should delinker this images with bot such commons delinker bot. You are consulted to community for the license of this coas with {{Delete}} for very used images?. Bad work, so a example this and many others Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 21:04, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A bot is supposed to automatically to delink it... Maxim(talk) 21:36, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, i know this, i believe that a one image is very used, should be retired before delete. For other hand, thos coats not was consulted for delete, you can restore it and place {{Delete}}, so betewen community searching the legal status of this coats, Wikipedia in spanish do not accept fair use, and is an important loss in articles. Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 21:41, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see now that bot begining delinker Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 21:43, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There was absolutely no license information on the image. Maxim(talk) 21:44, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But this is determined in consulting of delete, if you have info about is infringement of copyright good, is speedy delete, but if not, you should consulting to community about this thru {{Delete}} Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 21:50, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See CAT:U. Maxim(talk) 21:53, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that is corresponding to {{PD-ineligible}}, for example Coat of en:Kenya, the coat part is part fo flag Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 22:04, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you deleted this as lacking information but I'm sure there must be some mistake. Deleting pictures

[edit]

Could you be more carefull deleting images? this picture had all information: permission, author (added by herself) so marking picture as missing permission was baseless so was deleting. Administrator's job it's not only deleting, also saving images, which have all necessary information and only small technical things should be done (information template for example). I restored already a few images deleted by you, but some of them were really incomplete but not this. For example you missed some mediawiki error here - no edit of uploader, but author and permmission were present in log visible on that page. I hope you will not delete so many good images any more. Instead of deleting right away try to look in history or read all text which is wriiten on the page which is marked by template. Ludmiła Pilecka (talk) 12:59, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing it for me. You must realise, however, that the sheer number of images that I go through means that some will slip though the cracks. Maxim(talk) 23:11, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give me the link to the image? The likely reason as to why I deleted it is licensing issues. Help with old transfers

[edit]

Hello Maxim - I saw that you had spent some effort protecting a file which was transferred from wp in a somewhat haphazard fashion. I have problems with Kobac who is currently having countless such files deleted, without even trying a tiny bit to keep them. Since many of these files were transferred by now retired users, there is no one to look after them and all of a sudden articles across wikipedia are featuring redlinks. See for instance all of the deleted images listed here, and other threatened images such as this one, which is easily verified (see attached talkpage). In any case, I don't know how to access the histories of these deleted files so as to restore the ones that should be restored - some of them are indeed without copyright, but they all deserve a minute's effort to see if they are deserving. Anyhow, thankful for any help, Mr.choppers (talk) 05:53, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Прошу согласовать администрирование

[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This file was deleted in 2008 due to missing license information. The file is part of a set of three used to demonstrate dithering. помощь

[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Cipservis

Cipservis (talk) 05:48, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

[edit]

Dear Maxim

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

[edit]

Hello Maxim,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
