There is a mistake in Image:Unknown Water strider.JPG

Hi Mattes, the insect in your picture is not a Water strider (Rhynchota: Gerridae), cause is too different. I think it is an Ichneumon wasp (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Antennas, head, the wing with pterostigma and reduced venation, the prothorax too small and a large mesothorax have usual appearance of Hymenoptera Terebrantia. But see the abdomen: is strongly reduced as the petiolate abdomen of several Ichneumon wasps. I think this image should be categorized as Unknown Hymenoptera. Greetings --gian_d 10:57, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your message. Maybe you can make a renaming request and insert the correct category. I have absolutely no idea about animal names. CU, --Mattes 11:07, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Category:Video game people

Hello, i revert your edit on this category. Its not about gamers, but about people in the "world" of the video game ; like en:Category:Video game people. But maybe you can take a look at Category:People playing video games.

A last point, i think e-gamers can be add in the first category, not in the second if the photo dont show them playing (for example Image:Johnathan Wendel.jpg can be add in both). Sorry if its hard to understand my poor english. ~ bayo or talk 19:50, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Take a look at Image:Gnugo-logo.png too :D for your gaming category ? ~ bayo or talk 20:00, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I think you should rename such categories like that: Category:Female red clothing (or Category:Red female clothing?). And create a category:Female clothing by color (same for male) --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 12:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, what's better Female red clothing or Red female clothing or the exisiting Red clothing, female? - I dunno but I think the latter is more useful, because the color is more important than the gender. But you can give me some reasons to think about your suggestions as well. We can disuss about it.
Female clothing by color and Male ... sounds good. That creation takes a while because I have to recat the other existing clothes by color and gender categories first... --Mattes 13:51, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
Well IMO "Red clothing, female" is not correct. It doesn't matter that the color of more important: it's just not really correct to write "Red clothing, female", grammatically speaking (and I'd say logically speaking!). And tell me if I'm wrong but I've never seen any other category using a coma... --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 08:51, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
I have seen such comma uses at Category:German Democratic Republic stamps. I'll have to check Commons:Naming categories. --Mattes 11:16, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Hallo Mattes,
"consent given verbally".

Mattes 12:44, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Fast request from Photo Editor in Washington, DC

Dear Mattes,

Please forward your reply asap/immediately to Hollmarsh1@aol.com.

I found a photo that you uploaded to Wikimedia at:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Celilo_mural_salem_capital.jpg

while doing photo research for a textbook publisher on a project. I thought your image might be appropriate for inclusion in a literature curriculum.

I am specifically seeking to confirm the source where you acquired the digital file; can you confirm where the file came from?

I seek to contact the source immediately because I work for a publisher who wishes to possibly publish it within the curriculum.

I look forward to hearing from you as quickly as possible; the publisher is eager to finalize images to be used.

Thank you,

Holly Marshall

Photo Researcher for Pearson Digital Learning Group Washington, D.C.

Free advice: When someone gives you such message w/o any link or info, check your watchlist and/or look at his "User contributions" history near the same date-time so as to see which of your edits he reverted or undid; that's what I did (I left you a message below and I was puzzled by this accusation on your page) and I found it's a bug: a page you edited went completely blank in the database, as if you had vandalized it (but the history page shows you didn't). You can see my report about it at Commons:Village pump#Serious database bug/corruption. Regards, 62.147.38.237 18:36, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Multilingual cities

Hello. I see you started some multilingual tags (I originally started this system and category) for cities, such as London: I made a new subcat Category:Multilingual tags: Locations so as to be proactive and avoid having a crowded main cat to be sorted later.

But a problem that'll eventually manifest itself is that there are many London or Paris, etc., across the world – tons of London or Paris in North America for instance, cf. w:London (disambiguation) or w:Paris (disambiguation). Also, the Location field is supposed to be "City, Country" and not just the city. So I was thinking of something like this:

 • London should be moved to Template:London, UK (with a synonym redirect from Template:London, U.K.)
 • The template's multilingual contents too should output "London, UK" or "Paris, France", etc.
 • The main Template:London should only be a disambiguation, i.e. just outputting an error text in case someone uses it in error (only the user knows for sure if he intended the London in UK or in Ontario or in Texas, and we can't assume that anyone slapping a London meant UK).

Another thing is, you have been linking each name to its related Wikipedia article; but as I understand it, we're supposed to give priority to internal links to the Commons galleries such as London or Paris (where people can find all Wikipedia interwikis if they want to, and where they are also automatically updated by iw bots). BTW, such pages usually provide a wealth of ready-made multilingual names of the city and its country, for starting a new tag.

What do you think? (I'll check back here.) 62.147.38.237 15:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

You are right with the many Parisses and Londons. But I think there will be no templates for the smaller cities with this name for the next 30 years... I will insert addtional informations about the country and delete the interwiki links from the text corpus.

Category:Multilingual tags: Locations seems to be a good idea, thanks for creating. --Mattes (talk) 08:39, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I have expanded a bit your tags with more translations. 62.147.36.68 17:50, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Mädchen mit den Seifenblasen

Sehr geehrter Herr Mattes!

Recatting composers

Hi, you recently recategorized most of the composer hierarchies; one example is putting Category:Sheet music of Sergei Rachmaninoff below Category:Compositions by Sergei Rachmaninoff. What was your reason for doing so? I can see that it only serves to add an extra click to get to the sheet music categories, which I frequently use. It might make more sense on a grand scale, sheet music being a subset of compositions, but then all the audio files in the general 'compositions' cat doesn't make sense. ALTON .ıl 03:50, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

This is based on logical thoughts. Once a composer produces sheet music, than it is a composition a) on paper which is sheet music and b) the music which is a result hereof. This makes more sense the more I think of. Practically we cannot go for parallel cat. hierarchies if one (sheet music) is only part of a higher hierarchy (compositions), so we gotta live with that extra sub-level I think. BFN, --Mattes (talk) 19:56, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Okay. My intent was for a categorization of a different kind (by genre where necessary, since Commons doesn't handle that yet) but this is fine.

Painting template

hi there Mattes,

please be careful when editing information on paintings that use the painting template not to disturb them in such a way that it gets messed up. I encountered two files at this point where your edits eliminated the template, see here [2] and [3]. Best if you use the "Preview" function after adding information to check if everything is ok and not just save and leave it without taking a closer look. It would be good if you could go back and check if your edits have malfunctioned other descriptions and repair them. Thanks alot for your attention. Gryffindor (talk) 02:01, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Gryffindor!
Sorry for that. “}}” were mistyped in the cases you've mentioned above. The tl implementations are not the reason for corruption. I try to preview edited files prior to saving. BFN, --Mattes (talk) 13:42, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Some Image Questions

Hello, Mattes!

I am new to Commons and have a few questions. I asked one of our compatriots but he has not answered, perhaps he will, it is a recent question, but i see that you have also edited the image page i was asking him about, so will ask you also.

Please go here and, if you have the time, answer the questions i pose:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Denniss#Ariana_Airlines

(in fact, only the first question i write is specific to the user Denniss, the rest are generic and apply to Commons in general) - my main worry is: is it possible for my new uploaded image to have erased Denniss's existing image with the same name?.

thank you, Aryadne (talk) 03:57, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, Mattes, i will be sure to use more specific names henceforth. However, i still have two queries - i will rephrase them more simply, as i see now how strangely i worded them yesterday!

1. at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Ariana.jpg only the Commons links are shown, while at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Ariana.jpg only the Wikipedia links are shown. Is there a universal place that shows ALL the places where this image might be used? for if it is used in other language wikipedias, how would you know - it would be unpractical to search EVERY ONE, wouldn't it? (i am not asking about this image particularly, but generally about wikimedia features).

2. why is it that when i searched for "Ariana" in the Commons search box yesterday, this particular image did not appear anywhere in the results? (it does now, but i do not see any major new additions to the file information that anyone has made to warrant this). i thought the filename "Ariana.jpg" and description "Lake in Sofia, Bulgaria" should be enough for the search to find it. is it that the commons database simply needed several hours to catch up with the new info?

Again, thank you and i await your reply! Aryadne (talk) 13:05, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi there,
ad 1) You're mixing up two different things. A file name at a Wikimedia projects is not necessarily equal to those at Wikimedia Commons files. There might be a file File:XYZ.jpg hosted at the English language edition of Wikipedia and a File:XYZ.jpg hosted at Wikimedia Commons WITH A TOTAL DIFFERENT CONTENT.
ad 2) Do not stress the internal search engine feature for recently uploaded or renamed files. The engine might not be up to date that means it may searche through old databases. I don't know how frequently this engine is catching up new or changed data but we're talking days. This problem includes, but is not limited to, for the external machine mayflower (here applied to "ariana"). Let's work Commons Special:Search: This gives your pic of the lake among others. Denniss opinion "The original file was deleted but somehow stayed in the gallery. Thus it reappeared in the gallery with the image you uploaded using a historic name" seems to be the right explanation.
You should simply go ahed and make a new upload with a unique and new file name. Afterwards, replace your prior uploaded image with the new file. As I said, contact the Village pump or a Admin or a database specialist for further investigation. I'm just a simple user just like you :-)

Sistine Chapel ceiling

I notice that you are doing work there.

 • Firstly, this file needs deleting, and should not be included- (File:)Sistine chapel ceiling diagram of areas.PNG

It is inaccurate, which is why I created a replacement, which you already have in place.

 • You will find also that there is a file which shows the real and painted architecture of the ceiling, which I also created.
 • There is another diagram which shows a section of the chapel wall and vault, and indicates how the pictorial scheme goes together. That should be placed beside the other two.
 • There are a number of pictures which show the paintings in there pre-restoration state. These pictures are needed in the article about the restoration. One editor has already deleted the old state of Jeremiah, by simply saving the restored state over the top. This caused considerable annoyance as the unrestored version was in use in an FA article.

Cheers! Mandy (talk) 08:01, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi TTaylor! Thanks for your message. These prefixes are not necessary to exchange. The re-upload is a extremely bad idea (almost worthy to be considering a block) and these user seems to have no idea about the topic. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

-- Хрюша ?? 07:27, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

-- Хрюша ?? 08:00, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, geht klar. Ciao, --Mattes (talk) 08:06, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I saw you created this category. Is this extra category really necessary? I think Category:Paintings in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam suffices for the moment. If the problem is that Category:Paintings in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is too full, I agree. I'm still working on this. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 19:08, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

There are a lot of sub-categories which are connected with painters by museums so I've created an administrative cat... I assume, that there will be more in the near future. To get an overview, I try to sort it out. Where's the disadvantage? It wasn't my idea to make up some sub-cats by painters, I just follow and give 'em sub-cats a place to be. This is just an administrative step which follows that sub-cat. movement "let's sort paintings by museum". I just started to sort the mess, that means there's a lot more to do. I'd say it is necessarry because of the mass and the newly created parent Category:Paintings by painter by museum. BFN, --Mattes (talk) 19:19, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
The problem with this specific category (Category:Paintings by painters located at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam) is that it's - i'm sorry to say - superfluous. The consequence of it would be that Category:Paintings in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam would have as its only subcat Category:Paintings by painters located at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. I don't think that that's desirable. Furthermore there's a problem in the English. It could be read as "painters who are literally located at the Rijksmuseum". I'm sorry for the negative criticism. But I guess that's how it goes here on commons. Otherwise your edits I sometimes see on my follow list are much appreciated. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 19:46, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, whatever - you seem to be administrating ("one of the few") the Paintings at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam which is a lot of work... Just one question: How would you, if at all, include the Category:Paintings by painter by museum within the Rijksmuseum? The topic "painters who are literally located at the Rijksmuseum" is not the same as Category:Paintings by painters located at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam because it follows the criterion "by painter" as applied through Category:Paintings by painter by museum. Eventually, the Category:Paintings in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam will contain "...by era" (Baroque etc.), "...by date" (16th century etc.) and "...by painter" (Rubens etc.) and other sub-categories. That means we should think about a useful system for sub-categories of Category:Paintings in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam at an early stage... --Mattes (talk) 20:03, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
For the moment I think that all categories Category:Paintings by ... in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam can be sorted directly under Category:Paintings by painter by museum, without the use of an intermediary category. At the moment I am going through all the ±1500 files related to the Rijksmuseum. Each time when I find 2 files of the same artist, I create a subcategory, just as the for example, the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I am now at 'only' 135 subcategories. Sot for now I don't think differentiation is necessary. Only when the number of 200 is reached.
But to return to the original topic: is it ok if I undo the changes you have done so far? Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 20:40, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
"Only when the number of 200 is reached." — I think in two or three years that will be the case. Well that's up to you then.
"undo the changes you have done" — @ Category:Paintings by painters located at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam: Fifty-fifty, because if we put the Rijksmuseum aside, it would be an exclave of the Category:Paintings by painter by museum structure. Is there a higher level to discuss that?
I still miss your answer to my question "How would you, if at all, include the Category:Paintings by painter by museum within the Rijksmuseum?"... --Mattes (talk) 00:06, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand the problem. I think we should do exactly the same for Category:Paintings by ... in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam as you have done with Category:Paintings by ... in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I'll give you an example by using Category:Paintings by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. ok? Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 08:41, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
OK now we're understand each other. That works out, too. Here's how I came up with the Category:Paintings by ... in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. First I thought to create a connector between painters and museum so I came up with the Category:Paintings by painter by museum, then I applied it to the Category:Paintings by ... in the Kunsthistorisches Museum as you noted above. Then I saw that it becomes too large. The next step was to create the sub-cat Category:Paintings by ... in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Your example of the Category:Paintings by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam with a new parallel cat. is new to me but it also fits the system on the Category:Paintings by painter by museum but without the sub-cat. Hmm, I could live with that although it does not seem to be perfect. Anyway let's go for your suggestion for the next couple of years. I mean we have more important task to fulfill than that (we need to adopt existing basic categories to the images like motif, era and most of all: uploads). I guess from all the paintings in the world, Commons hosts about 20% (maybe only 10 or 5%)... Also, I would like to see more images of high resolution which can be obtained by photographs or scans but not through internet ressources in most cases.
Another question, hence you're an art expert at Commons: A big field of my interest is to apply artwork with a date related category. This is simple if we a artwork is signed or scientifically proven to a single year. I'm taking paintings because we have the most detailed structure (per year). What about "1882-1883"? I would apply Category:1882 paintings and (if I have time also Category:1882 paintings) - or should it be Category:1882 paintings? What about "1882-1885"? I would apply Category:1880s paintings - or should it be Category:1882 paintings, Category:1883 paintings, Category:1884 paintings and Category:1885 paintings? Greetings, --Mattes (talk) 11:09, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
ok, thanks a lot for your understanding. Yes I agree, there's still a lot to improve.
About categories by year I would choose the widest category; just to be on the safe side. So if a painting was made in the "winter of 1886-1887", such as File:Van Gogh Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat 1886-87 Rijksmuseum.jpg, I would categorise it under Category:1880s paintings. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 13:54, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
OK See you, --Mattes (talk) 04:11, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Holbein image

I noticed that you added the Horenbout portrait to the Holbein creator template. To be honest, I'm not in favour of these templates in the first place, but I feel that adding pictures will make them even more conspicuous and distracting (the template does not integrate with the description template).

If, however, you wish to proceed, please consider the possibility of using a different image. I am not convinced that the frame on this one is in the public domain or indeed that it is "own work", as stated on the image page, because I have seen this very image in this form in books. The source is not apparent and the original uploader is banned. Also, the painting is not by Holbein and shows him painting with his right hand, whereas he was left handed. If we must have an image, I suggest File:Hans Holbein the Younger, self-portrait.jpg, from which the Horenbout was largely derived. qp10qp (talk) 15:51, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

OK, I exchanged the image in Creator:Hans Holbein d. J. The creator templates exist by the 100,000s in the artwork and photographic files since many years. Since we have it, they should look somewhat professional. I don't the the distractive aspect because it's just one line with the name of the author (but it might be a bit confusing for new editors). I think, the images in the templates is a benefit for the general information about the author. I just hope that people take care about the data size just like the File:Hans Holbein the Younger, self-portrait.jpg (> 3 MB) prior to insertion. --Mattes (talk) 16:19, 17 April 2009 (UTC) P.S. If you doubt the authorship of the previously mentioned image, you may edit the data in the file or start a discussion in the file. Bye, --Mattes (talk) 16:21, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello. I am a Thai member in Wikimedias Commons. The flag in this picture is not the buddist flag. It's the royal flag of Queen Sirikit of Thailand, blue flag with her acronym "สก" (pronounce "sor-kor") under a thai crown. You can compare with my photo here. Template for use on oddly-shaped images requiring background removal

I think we discussed which template should be used on oval and other non-rectangular images requiring the background to be moved a week or so ago, but I can't seem to find the location of the discussion. At any rate, I remembered yesterday that there is a template for use on such images that is better than my proposed use of requires background removal; if you use Opaque it will put the requests in a more specific cat, and tagging images with that instead of Ifc will get them done much faster. Cheers! -- Editor at Largetalk 22:49, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Move

Hi Mattes, I'm writing here because I think you were the original creator of the category so can I have your opinion on the move of of Category:United States Marine Corps Silent Drill platoon to Category:Silent Drill Platoon ceremonies of the United States Marine Corps, personally I think the move is wrong ill-judged and inaccurate, however it could be my opinion which is the wrong one, so I'm asking the opinion of others before making a fuss with those who requested/authorised the move. Do you think the new name is a better one? Thanks. KTo288 (talk) 15:11, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello! The category you have stated never existed. What category are you talking about then? If you mean the Category:Ceremony in the United States Marine Corps (now: Category:Ceremonies of the United States Marine Corps), the deletion was OK because it's now plural. Talk to you later, --Mattes (talk) 15:24, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
I got my capitalisation wrong it should have been Category:United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon with a capital P, the deletion log shows Mattes and me as the editors of this category this diff shows a user who I thought to be you created this category. Thanks.KTo288 (talk) 15:41, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Category:United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon has been created by, you're right. Here's the del log. The deletion is a bad idea' because a sub-cat. became it's own whereas the main cat. (a military unit) got deleted. The main cat. is useful and I see no reason for deletion. There are more topics about a unit than their ceremonies.
No discussions were made prior to deletion as far as I can see (also no notification of the creator and no offical deletion debate). So let's make a Request for undeletion or talk to admin User:Wknight94. --Mattes (talk) 15:58, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Introduction

Hello- I need help. am asking for your help. I've been editing in en.wikipedia for 2-3 years. My interests are in the biographies of musicians. About 6 months ago, I became tired of so many articles about people without any photo of them, or of musicians who were different without adding some very short music clips. I don't know how to do anything with Commons, but learned to ask photographers to allow me to upload their photos under a BY-CC or GDFL license, and have now uploaded over 200 photos. Here's my problem: I only upload photos where there are none on the pages or when the one there is so inferior or outdated we need a new one. But I don't know how to make Catgories, or when I find photos or other things in the wrong place, I don't know how to move that photo to the proper place-- or even where that is!! Sometimes, I am denied, trying to upload a photo, but no reason is given, and I have no idea who to complain to. Other times, it seems like my upload would have been successful; but though I see my username and a green check mark, it says that "there's no file by that name but" I can upload one. ?? So I try again, and I'm told there's already an image in Commons like that, but I can't find it. Please, this place is driving me insane. All I want to do is upload the photos needed for the projects I work on, and place them on their articles that day. I wouldn't mind learning how to help out here in Commons in some small ways, too.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:17, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Here's the list of your contributions: Special:Contributions/Leahtwosaints unless deleted. Deleted photos can be listed by an admin, or you put the file name in the input box > go and read who has deleted it and why.
A category to start with is Category:Musicians for your photos, and Category:sound files for your clips. Help:Contents is the leading page for help. You can also ask the Village pump. I came from Wikipdia too and I found it very easy to work here. Hope that helps. It's a good idea to upload the files to Commons BTW. Keep trying. --Mattes (talk) 01:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

File:Sclavi_Tiganesti.jpg

Hello Mattes,

I have some doubts regarding the authenticity of the image mentioned. The problem with it is that in 1852 in Wallachia the alphabet used was the Cyrillic which was in use until 1862. After that date, slowly, begun the usage of Latin alphabet.

Can you please point us the source of the image? Was it scanned from a book, which one? Thanks, Echer (talk) 13:23, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I cannot. I have copied it from en:File:Sclavi_Tiganesti.jpg where the source has not been stated. I must not be from a book who knows? Looks genuine to me so PD-old applies. TinEye doesn't give results other than Wikipedia editions and mirrors. Greetings, --Mattes (talk) 14:23, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Do you speak English and German?

I am trying to find some help to upload a couple of images on the de.wikipedia and do not know how to bring them here. They are here: [5], and [6] I tried to upload the first photo, but another en.wikipedia editor said I did it wrong. I really can't understand how to upload anything or use Commons, (though I have uploaded hundreds of photos for en.wikipedia using the now-broken Flickr to Commons upload- the "Bryan tool". --Leahtwosaints (talk) 07:24, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

A: yes! What do you mean with "but another en.wikipedia editor said I did it wrong". I thought you have had uploaded the images towards Commons? Do you need translation hints of the information template or else? Greetings from Rome, Italy --Mattes (talk) 08:14, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I found this in Category:Comparisons_of_art. I also entered some files related to Henry Holiday's illustrations to "The Hunting of the Snark" into that category. I'll contact Dr. Schwartz too. Beste Grüße aus München --DL5MDA (talk) 23:42, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Mattes!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Cleanup completed on your internet kiosk image...

I noticed File:Internet_Kiosk_VTBS.JPG had a needs-cleanup box attached to it (placed by you), so I took care of pixilating the screen content -- I think it's sufficiently obscured now to avoid any sort of non-free content issues.

I'm not entirely familiar with the usual procedure for such things, to be honest, so apologies if I made any blunders or stepped on any toes. Since the new image was an improved replacement for the old one, I uploaded my version on top of your original, replacing it. (Hopefully that's the right way to handle such things? I was a little wary, since it wasn't originally my upload to be messing with -- but I figured your original is still recoverable in the event there's an issue.)

Also, since the image has received the modifications prescribed in the cleanup box you'd placed on it, I removed the Template:ifc entry from the image page. Again, I hope you don't mind that I took the liberty of doing that? Please let me know if any of the changes I made were presumptuous.

It's a quality, high-resolution photo... thanks for sharing it with us all! -- FeRD NYC (talk) 05:41, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Move-to-commons assistant

-- Ies (talk) 16:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Delphic_Sibyl_of_Michelangelo_-_1961_stamp_of_Italy.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Photographs of signs

Hallo, Mattes. I saw you reverted my redirecting Category:Photographs of signs to Category:Signs. It seems to me that many of the files under Category:Signs are photographs of signs, and it is rather impractical that only a small part of them are under Category:Photographs of signs, and that is the reason I made this redirect. Do you happen to know whether there is any criteria of categorization in this topic or a plan to move all photographs of signs under Category:Photographs of signs? Thank you for you time. --Aotake (talk) 02:20, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Sign is graphical work and photographs, so far so good. There are so many signs (1,000+) here that I thought sorting like this might be useful, too. It is solely my idea and I would do some clean-up in the near future. --Mattes (talk) 10:21, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Also Category:Clocks, bzw. dann irgendeine Unterkategorie. --Martin H.
