Mass licensing files
Hey, you notified me of my mistake of leaving my files unlicensed when I mass-uploaded a lot of them with Commonist. I tried to ask you over at my own talk page but I think I might have messed up the ping tag or something so I shall try here as well. Since the files needing to be fixed are so numerous I was wondering if there's any good way to update their licensing and creator information in bulk since individually editing each file is beyond my reach. Thank you for your time, --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 08:40, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Fenn-O-maniC: may I recommend VisualFileChange? You can do a mass find-replace on your own uploads this way. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 12:36, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Threshold of originality
Just wanted to check that this file (File:Map of Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps.png) is ok for PD-ineligible. If not, it should be deleted. Thanks in advance. Buidhe (talk) 15:03, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Buidhe:, no, it definitely isn't. Self-drawn maps are copyrightable everywhere. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:49, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- But what about something like this one where there's nothing but coastline and locations marked? If the coastline isn't copyrightable, what are the copyrightable elements there? Buidhe (talk) 00:01, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Buidhe: the way the coastline is drawn involves creativity and is copyrightable. You can argue all you want but the law is quite clear. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:15, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Pikons85 the file requires a license. Normally it asks for you when you first upload which license you choose, but since it broke, we need to ask you explicitly for one. Does {{Cc-by-4.0}} work for you? Please indicate that you have read and accepted that license if so. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:43, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

May I guess this was actually some sort of bot? Because there was a perfectly good PD notice, just obscured by a broken {{Information}} template. - Jmabel ! talk 02:11, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: unfortunately, no. We don't have a bot (we used to!), so someone must manually tag the pages. I try to go through each page and fix any obvious errors, but if it isn't obvious, I lack the time. Plus, uploaders really should know if they're uploading bad data so they don't do it in the future. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:24, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Jmabel: not my problem. I don't notice you helping out with this backlog. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:53, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Nope, just adding a few thousand photos of my own each year, plus a couple of hundred from the Seattle Municipal Archive, and adding categories to a several thousand archival photos and fixing literally hundreds of significant errors in their metadata (last year University of Washington Libraries made several hundred corrections in their metadata based on my research on their images that we had brought into Commons and I'd researched), and being one of the two or three main people who handle questions at the help desk and Village pump. You have a problem with that? - Jmabel ! talk 05:39, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: of course not. I do have a problem with you shooting the messenger for pointing out that your file violates policy. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:54, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- I guess it's just that when I run across equivalent, easily fixed things (in this case, missing closing brackets) in the course of my work, I usually just fix them. But, yes, I would rather be informed than have it just sit there, if those are the two alternatives. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel if I see an image is only missing a bracket, and the license is clear, I will fix it. But I don't always catch it, especially when I'm checking 200 images in a single sitting. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:43, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. Just a quick question about this file. Wouldn't it be better to simply have the email verified by OTRS and indicate as such by {{OTRS received}} instead of copying and pasting the actual email into the file's description? -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:21, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: yes it would. But this may be a {{Grandfathered old file}}. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:03, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Window over door 6 rue Charel Grenoble.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Window over door 6 rue Charel Grenoble.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Your message on my talk page
I am perfectly familiar with your copyright policy. I do not generally upload copyvio to Commons and I actively PROD or localize any that I inadvertently upload. I have not repeatedly ignored directions from others and I resent your stating otherwise. I am a conscientious Wikimedia contributor and I do not appreciate your "final warning" ultimatum. Beleg Tâl (talk) 04:08, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Beleg Tâl: OK. Apologies if I misread your talk page history. Nonetheless, while the most recent file you uploaded is public domain, it had a license tag which stated that the author died at least 71 years ago. That is neither true nor relevant to US law. Could you please take care to find and use the right copyright tag? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:16, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry for snapping at you last night. I hadn't yet gotten around to replacing the IA-Upload default values for File:Germany Must Perish!.djvu, and I am grateful to you for taking care of it. Copyright status (Féval - Le Fils du diable)
Hello,
I've seen your edits on the files created from the book Le Fils du diable by Paul Féval.
The book has been published in the 19th century and is now in public domain but I'm not sure how I can indicate it is. Would the tags PD-old or PD-old-70 apply?
Yours sincerely,--Aziliz Breizh (talk) 15:37, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Aziliz Breizh: each file requires a copyright tag. Did you remove it from the original file by accident or intentionally (link)? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 14:20, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Magog the Ogre:Thanks for your answer. - The one on Commons is retouched (by me), differing from the original (in terms of en:color grading). I'm not confident about my edits, so I would like to compare and contrast on other projects. AlbanGeller (talk) 02:07, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- Magog, would this be OK? AlbanGeller (talk) 19:03, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- @AlbanGeller: if you really want the low resolution version that much, you can download it from the Internet Archive: [3]. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:58, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Creative Commons Confusion (Blackford Frontbench 2019.jpg)
This image was uploaded on Flickr last year by UK Parliament. Recently it has been flagged on here as non-free. The caption to the photograph states that it is released under CC-BY-3.0, but the tag says CC-BY-NC-2.0, which leaves me unsure as to whether it can be allowed. Robin S. Bot Handling of Space Station
Happy Saturday!
I noticed two files recently categorized as "Obsolete Diagrams of International Space Station":
- Triangular-Tegrahedral Space Station.jpg
- Space Station Program Architecture (c. 1984).jpg
Neither are (or ever were) diagrams of the ISS.
The first is a patent application diagram showing a concept for module connection, made without regard to what eventual project might use it. It isn't relevant to ISS, or to any other thing that has ever existed, except insofar as it shows forks in the road that were encountered but never taken.
The second is also not relevant to ISS, having been generated long before ISS was a gleam in Goldin's eye. No version of the ISS program ever considered a lot of things that are on that chart.
Furthermore, neither of the two is "obsolete" in any sense. Both are "historical": not all "space station" things are related to ISS. More or less, anything generated prior to about 1993 has to be reviewed with great care before being associated directly with ISS per se (as obsolete or otherwise). Some things survived the transition (Freedom - Alpha - ISS Alpha - ISS), but many did not.
It is possible that I simply don't understand the intent of the category, so I didn't make any changes. But the bot might could use a bit of a tweak.
Aside: I find it embarrassing that I spelled "tetrahedral" wrong. I'll have to fix that one of these days...
Not fred999 (talk) 18:39, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Not fred999: You are misunderstanding the history. My bot doesn't do anything regarding categorization. It only reports what human editors do. If you don't like the category, you should take it up with the person who added it, who is User:Ras67.[4] You are the person who added Category:International Space Station originally. You blocked me from editing a tempalte that I was alone to maintain
Why did you block me from editing Module:Dir/RTL overrides ? I was the creator and only maintainer of that module !
I did not make inconsistant changes recently, but went to maintain newer codes that were added and used. I documented as well the testcases module that helps maintaining it.
You just added another single code "non", and blocked it immediately but that list is still not complete, and I wanted to add newer codes that are being added in Mediawiki (at least "nrf-gg" and "nrf-je", there are others pending).
There was no attack on this module and blocking it for admins only is unfair. This looks just like a personal initiative you took immediately without reason just after your own single edit (which was not strictly necessary but only useful to avoid costly parser calls before using a fallback to ltr which was still correct, and would have happened on a rarely used language code; I jsut recommanded to make this list complete including for LTR languages to save some costly parser calls; and note that the Lua code for these lists can be generated by the test module).
You also blocked unfairly Module:Multilingual description/sort (that I also created and maintained correctly), when you just added incorrectly "fi" instead of "fil", and added "non".
Both modules are maintained in sync, they are both tested in the documented testcases page that shows the results (I have extended the tests performed in the last days for some tricky cases).
Do you really think I made something wrong and harmful to these two modules that justifies you to block them when you are making errors by yourself when editing it selfishly without even contacting me ?
verdy_p (talk) 13:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Verdy p: whoa, slow down. I had no idea you were the primary maintainer. I locked the page because it is in high use, which is standard procedure. It had nothing to do with you, personally. I have now provided you with the template editor permission, so you can edit. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:15, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
About File:Tomb of Bedit.jpg
Hi, On Wikipedia the file was tagged PD-OLD-100. Is that not a valid tag? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 01:34, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello Magog, I guess this is my first import from enwp File:Jerry Springer The Opera - Playhouse on the Square.jpg with OTRS permissions, I had trouble fixing the OTRS template. The one that was posted at enwp was en:Template:OTRS permission, the trouble I was having is what template to use here ? Maybe you can school me :P On a side note, can your cleanup scripts add the correct template automatically ? - FlightTime (open channel) 20:43, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Roberto Accornero
Good morning from Calabria, I put the license you said. Now how can we prevent the photo from being deleted? Mr. Accornero gave me the photo to put it on his biography, can something possibly be done to avoid a ruin? "Ban"
It would probably be wise for the entire conversation if you struck that part of your message on Alexis's talk page. I can see why you did it, they really weren't using their talk page to properly appeal their block as they should have but saying they are "banned" is not really within any Commons's policy. They can always appeal via email if they wish. They are not technically banned by any Wikimedia definition of the term that I know of. For the sake of calming tensions, no matter how small perhaps you should restate your notice. --Majora (talk) 23:01, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Please open the discussion
Hello. I respectfully ask you to open Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Block_review:_Alexis_Jazz and refrain from closing it again before it becomes stale or stable. The well-thought-out proposal by User:AFBorchert was specifically the kind of discussion we need here on Commons. Please also unprotect User talk:Alexis Jazz because I cannot see why it has been protected. Thanks 4nn1l2 (talk) 06:37, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Magog the Ogre, I would like to second that. As you are well aware, Commons is a consensus-driven project and we should find some consensus how we continue with this case. Any unilateral closure which is enforced by edit-warring ([6], [7]) in combination with admins who block each other is not likely to help us here. You are writing: Users will not threaten me and my fellow administrators with violence and be allowed to edit on here. It is easily possible that I have overlooked something or that there is more info to this on the CU side. Please elaborate and we will take that into account. But please do not suppress our consensus-building processes. Thank you & kind regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:28, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Magog, I know how frustrating it can be when you feel that a user severely threatens you. I can know, because the user who made a threat at my life is still walking around at the projects and fellow admins even blatantly denied that an obvious death threat is a dead threat. Now you know that I do understand how frustrated and powerless such a situation can make you feel. Also, I'm not challenging AJ's block. If the entire CU team decided that a block is required it isn't my place to plea for an unblock. This said, as administrators we cannot let our emotions get in the way and start acting against policy or act as an autocrat. This isn't what the community expect from administrators, all the community members want is that you talk with them. If you feel uncomfortable in doing so, perhaps one of the other CU's could speak on your behalve. Please show us the Magog we all know so I can withdraw my statement that I would support your desysop. Natuur12 (talk) 09:19, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
- I too ask that you reconsider your close, I've said from the outset I disagree with it and I still do however irrespective of that these discussions need to continue, It's very unhealthy and toxic to close a discussion such as this right now, Given it was a CU-team block I don't expect the block to be lifted howevre other CU members may disagree with the block or it's length and so discussion is vital and so is consensus,
- Alls I ask is that for the sake of this project you reopen it and either allow it to die down or allow someone (CU team) to close it at a later date, I can't force you and I'm certainly not going to reopen it myself because that'd be dumb but irrespective of everyones emotions that discussion needs to be reopened. Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 09:26, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

- Are there diffs for his alleged death threats against administrators? Vermont (talk) 22:02, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hello again. You stated at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#Magog_the_Ogre, "This user has threatened physical violence and continues to do so against me and fellow admins." As well as, "If you wish to take away my sysop bit for zealously enforcing the "don't threaten to kill administrators" policy, I'll take that fall." I have attempted to find diffs or other forms of evidence for these threats against administrators. Are you able to produce these? Regards, Vermont (talk) 19:31, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- If the instances of Alexis's death threats are off-wiki, please communicate with me over email if you are comfortable doing so. If there is no evidence, you have used fabricated death threats as justification for removing talk page access, which is an extreme abuse of tools and of community trust. Regards, Vermont (talk) 19:41, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Update: The discussion was reopened on 27 March and we are currently discussing if we are ready to close it in consensus: COM:AN#Closure?. Your comments are welcome. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 17:56, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

So this image should not be categorized?
File:Chagall Todesnachricht.1985.J.Gerner.jpg per rule about not publishing Works by this artist created after 1917 that are not in the public domain in Europe. I can't evaluate this myself. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 15:03, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Kalbbes: Hi! Magog is not around atm so I will try to answer. Of course it is good to categorize this photo and all other photos. The problem is however that the photo may be a copyvio and needs to be deleted. It is much easier to find such problems when the files are categorized properly. I will start a DR for this photo so we can find out what to do with the photo. --MGA73 (talk) 09:05, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Ogrebot status
Has Ogre bot stopped working? I have not seen any new updated gallery since March 25. Any ideas when it will be working again? Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 11:08, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
- Same observation here (User:Rsteen/Artists_from_Denmark/2020_March_21-31). Maybe the load on the servers should compel the powers that be to grant more running time to the bots before they are timed out? Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 07:57, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Thing is, he was only blocked for three minutes, so now there is nothing keeping him from reactivating the bot - except perhaps ill feelings toward the Commons community. Maybe it would be a good idea if you helped to lay some gentle pressure on him, because the community - as far as I know - has no ill feelings towards him, and we really miss the bot. Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Call for discussion
I pinged you six weeks or so ago. I was very surprised to see an indefinite block - undeserved IMO. I am glad to see it was rescinded.
Anyhow, it may have distracted you.
The point I made @ Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Elizabeth_Holmes_2016.jpeg was that the uploader was the executive at Holmes' firm who had the authority to release images that were owned by the firm. I suggested it would be carrying PCP too far to demand the (former?) director of public relations confirm that the image was properly licensed. I'd like to see that discussion closed. Would you please return there, and respond to my last point? Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 22:49, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

- @EugeneZelenko: There is a long-standing API bug with workarounds but it involves significant code changes on my end. I will work on a permanent solution but it may take a bit. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:51, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- 18th of June is also missing. I tried https://tools.wmflabs.org/magog/update-report.php?type=uploads&start=20200612 and https://tools.wmflabs.org/magog/update-report.php?type=uploads&start=20200618 but got an error message. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:39, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Strange edit of OgreBot 2
Hi Magog , i wondered about this edit. I found it several times when repairing broken {{Information}} templates. This change is a little bit destructive since it may overwrite previous author parameters. --Arnd (talk) 05:55, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- The edit is to add an author parameter to Information templates which lack one. The page had a hidden control character that also confused Wikimedia's parsing software. It's very hard to control for such a scenario. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:42, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
presidential vote map
Hi, can you tell me where you got the voting data for File:2016 Nationwide US presidential county map shaded by vote share.svg? A downloadable CSV or something like that would be fantastic. Thanks. 2601:648:8202:96B0:0:0:0:C4FC 20:33, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

fileinfo.php
Hi! When I create an upload log like here the tool suggest {{PD-user-en|Laurijs}}. I think it should suggest "PD-user-lv" or something. Anything you can fix? --MGA73 (talk) 18:05, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Now that I'm here oldver.php keeps saying I have not authorized the tool. But at Special:OAuthManageMyGrants it says that "Allowed on project: meta.wikimedia.org". If I'm supposed to allow it on Commons then how do I do that? --MGA73 (talk) 22:39, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- They changed the site URL and it broke the cookie mechanism. I've fixed it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:08, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks a million! I really like that tool!
- Another thing. There are about 1500 files moved from ja.wiki to Commons and the information may not be transferred very good. I wonder if you could fix something that could do a mass fix of the file description on Commons. The files is a part of a serie of files so they should be build up the same way on ja.wiki. Example of a file:
- You once fixed the files I moved from old wikitravel so I know you can do wonders :-) --MGA73 (talk) 08:09, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

uploads by new users
Hi,
Just out of curiosity... I see that your bot keeps adding uploads by my bot (Eiabot) to the overview of uploads of new users. What is the threshold you're using? :P I think you must have added over a thousand images by my bot, by now haha. Effeietsanders (talk) 02:02, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Effeietsanders: 150 edits, which doesn't include reuploads. You can add it to the blacklist: User:OgreBot/gallery-opt-out. But honestly you should probably go through the bot approval process so it has the bot flag. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:48, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm actually not sure if it should have a bot flag: it may be desirable that people can watch an image and see if it has been updated. I'm on the fence about it. Effeietsanders (talk) 23:24, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

OgreBot Status
Hi Magog the Ogre. It seems that the daily updates have been "on vacation" for about a week. Is this a general or a lasting phenomenon? Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 12:12, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Rsteen just temporarily broken. Sometimes needs quick fixes, sometimes long ones. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:33, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
oldver.php - upload log
Hi! Sometimes I want to upload old versions but sometimes I only want to add an upload log. It seem you can only make an upload log if you also upload old versions of the files. Perhaps you could make a change so it is possible to create an upload log without transferring a file? --MGA73 (talk) 17:55, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello, sir, seems like these two images (File:Anatolia ca 740 AD-es.svg & File:Asia Minor ca 740 AD-es.svg) are so similiar except captions of images and colors of roads. I just want to know whether they are the same one and could I make a redirection with one of them? -- Vikarna 16:07, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
