CommonsHelper request
Magnus, an older version of the Information template at en Wikipedia included a "location" parameter that we don't use here. In cases where this is used, would it be possible for the bot to grab that information and include it in the "description" field so it's not lost? Kelly (talk) 15:41, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Also (this is minor) the bot is not including a line break in the "author" field between the original text and the "original uploader was..." information. Kelly (talk) 15:46, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
hi i was wondering if i could use your piscture of static at the playground for an irish science text book im writing. it will be an educational publication for students studying for a state exam. thanx seamus sobric@hotmail.com
Commons helper
Hi, Magus, I have a problem with your Move-to-commons assistant tool. While I transferred more than 100 images with it, suddenly it does not accept my doing so and shows like this. "Your TUSC verification was not successful. Aborting." I've used the same password for the task, so I don't understand the warning message. How do I fix the problem and access the tool again? Thanks. --Caspian blue (talk) 12:56, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think there is something funny with the toolserver. Wait a while and try again. You can also go here, enter your TUSC name/password (commons only) and get some more detailed message that can help me figure out what's wrong, if it is an error in TUSC. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:48, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- I erased all my caches stored in my browser (fireworks) and restarted my computer, but nothing shown on the TUSC site except "TUSC verification : User validated. 1"--Caspian blue (talk) 13:56, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, now working. I think the problem was temporary (for almost 2 hours though), but sometimes similar bugs occurred to me several times while I was uploading, but after refreshing the page, those problems were quickly gone. In this case, the problem lasted a bit more. I think you would better check codings to prevent similar problems in the future.--Caspian blue (talk) 14:04, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

File Upload Bot (Magnus_Manske)
Hello, would it be possible, to add the interwiki link of the wp, where the picture is taken from? Or might be inserted automatically from the usage-script. Would help a lot, if pictures have to be recategoried, if some information about it were available. Thanks, --Ebcdic (talk) 20:48, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Heuristic issues
I'm running across an awful lot of categories where images are NOT supposed to ever land, would it be possible to give you an exceptions list of commons categories that your Bot could skip? And maybe a "default to this instead table?" I should note your Bot isn't in very good odor with the Admins and regulars here for the shotgun effects of it's attempt to classify images. Would recommend fewer autogenerated categories in general, and perhaps the rest of a list in an embedded comment. Is your tool accessing the various en.Wikipedia commonscat, commoncats, templates and trying to pick off exact matches from an en.wikipedia category? A lot of categories are tagged directly with {} or {} with defaults to PAGENAME for exact matches. Building a composite links here list from those (or better yet perhaps, embedding a hidden combining category, so if other templates are used same can be updated to immediate effect) you can check against. I can get you the list of interwiki templates easily, or install a category. Say the word. Best regards, and nice to meetchya! //FrankB 18:44, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- My bot is using categories generated by the CommonSense tool. It might be more fruitful to do the filtering there. --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Image:Norbertleobutz123.jpg
I believe you moved Image:Norbertleobutz123.jpg in error from en.Wikipedia as it is missing the needed source information making the public domain license invalid. Please consider moving it back to en.Wikipedia where the image can be properly addressed and most likely deleted as per other uploads by the same user for the same problem of no source information. See additional information on the image discussion page. Thank you Dbiel (talk) 04:32, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I do not think I moveed the image. More likely, someone else moved it using my bot. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:27, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Quick Question about CommonsHelper
Just a question of "how things work". If a user has created a TUSC account, and then is blocked on Commons - will they still be able to use CommonsHelper? I realize that non-direct file uploads won't work - but what about direct file uploads under the bots username? Thanks. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 21:16, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
- I check if the user is blocked on Commons, and prevent upload. However, I've never tried if it actually works. If you see a case, please tell me! --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Cool. Well I just tested on my bot. When I tried to do a direct upload from a blocked account it did say "TSUC Failed" or something similar. Thank you very much. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 21:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Lost TUSC password
Hi Magnus - I seem to have lost my TUSC password. Is there any way that I can get this emailed to me or reset? Thanks! --Rlandmann (talk) 08:01, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion
Hi Magnus, I was wondering if you'd ever considered adding Agência Brasil images (CC) to your excellent FIST tool, seems like a good idea to me. Cheers, Jacoplane (talk) 19:03, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- One more idea if you're bored :) You might consider creating a RSS feed for flickrfree, so people can add it as a livebookmark in firefox or another RSS reader. Cheers, Jacoplane (talk) 20:28, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Finally, you might include a US government image search, although you shouldn't allow 1-click uploads, since not all images on those servers are public domain. It might be better to use the image search engines of the particular websites; for example, here are the images for the Department of Defense, which are all PD: http://dodimagery.afis.osd.mil/index.html. Jacoplane (talk) 23:35, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi! The Brasilians are in, but the USGov image search is weird to run. I'll try to parse the google search later; and then generate the RSS feed :-) --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:22, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- Awesome :) I just tried the Agencia Brazil, and there seem to be a few issues with images not showing up precisely, see for example [1]. I like what you did with automatically generating the information template. Cheers, Jacoplane (talk) 18:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Should be fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- Awesome Magnus, it works perfect! You think you'll enable one-click TUSC upload from Agência Brasil? Jacoplane (talk) 21:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
- Should be fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Lost TUSC Password, me too
Hi,
I forgot my TUSC password, too. Can you please make some automated way of retrieving it?
My username: Amire80.
Thanks in advance. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:00, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Bug
Magnus, there is still a problem when images with the Self2 template at en Wikipedia are transferred here. The author information is still not being included in the Self template here. Kelly (talk) 14:40, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- Could you point me to an example image on en.wikipedia that isn't uploaded on Commons yet? I couldn't find a self2 one that used author= --Magnus Manske (talk) 18:54, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
TUSC Statistik?
Hallo Magnus,
- Ok danke viel mal :)--Luxo (talk) 20:43, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Magnus, please change uncat to in commonshelper. This will place the pictures in the right category. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 21:27, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Links to wikipedia'sHi Magnus, i dont know if i already asked this in the past. At the moment commonshelper converts links like <text> to :<lang>:<text> and <text> to <text>. Could you change this behaviour so that <text> gets converted to <text>? Thank you, Multichill (talk) 11:48, 2 August 2008 (UTC) Original upload logI see your bot uploaded Image:Unix-history.svg. I know, it has been requested by someone else, but i suppose the content is filled by the bot? Why does Image:Unix-history.svg#Original_upload_log only have an item, if en:Image:Unix-history.svg#filehistory has five entries? (one of them from a different author) Should I file it on Jira? Platonides (talk) 16:31, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Did you change commonshelper?Hi Magnus, did you change Commonshelper? My upload stopped functioning. Url's like [2] stopped functioning and just give a timeout. Multichill (talk) 20:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
AV Hill imageI noticed that you copied the AV Hill image[3] from the English Wikipedia to Commons [4]. While I'm confident this image is in the public domain in the United States, it's not clear that this image is in the public domain in its country of origin (probably UK or Sweden, I'm not sure which). Do you have some additional imformation about this image's copyright status? If not, it should probably be removed from Commons. To use the image in the [5] article, the image should probably be simply copied to the Deutsch Wikipedia. Noca2plus (talk) 22:47, 19 August 2008 (UTC) File Upload Bot - language templatesPlease note the fix I just made here - [6]. I believe I've noticed the same problem (description text not showing because it has an = or ? in it) on some other uploads also. It would probably be best to have the bot use the "1=" whenever it adds language templates. --dave pape (talk) 00:20, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Image:Dwight Johns.gifPlease delete this image from commons. What part of "Please delete this image from commons" don't you understand? 124.176.51.76 23:10, 29 August 2008 (UTC) You mean, why I don't just obey your commands, oh master? Well, for starters, who are you, and why do you think it should be deleted? And why do you bother me with that? You did read the giant red-bordered box at the beginning of this page, right? --Magnus Manske (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2008 (UTC) List of bot-uploaded Geograph.org.uk images?Hello Magnus. Would it be possible to extract a list of files uploaded using your bot which either contained a link to http://geograph.org.uk or used the Geograph template or even, if it's easier, just contained "[Gg]eograph" somewhere in the image description? It seems that the bot doesn't make a good job of tagging these, so I would like to go through the uploads and fix them. There are only a few hundred geograph images left on enwiki, so I don't think it's worth thinking about changing anything to handle these better. Thanks, Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:24, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Administrative noticeDear Magnus Manske/Archive 4. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons. Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page). If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways. Thank you,
Frei-BildHello Magnus, can you help me in transferring two images from de-WP to Commons (both Frei-Bild) as the CommonsHelper does refuse: Helmstedt Kurpark.jpg and Helmstedt Bär.jpg. Thanks--Gerardus (talk) 07:17, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Mirror for FlickrHello Magnus. I request you for a little help, if you are interesting by that. Currently Flick access to image is restrected to me (at my work, i dont have web at my house). Restrected cause nudity, every body know Flick is a database of nudity image... Are you interested to create a tool that can download and display Flick images on toolserver (something like a mirror) ? (for example the tool can take a parametter like http://flickr.com/photos/thechronliar/2668945047/in/set-72157606169602032/) Its maybe not very hard to do. Are you interested by that? Or do you already have something like that? If your tool to move image from Flickr→Commons can display a preview, it the same for me. Thanks a lot anyway. ~ bayo or talk 07:56, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Danke. TomAlt (talk) 16:03, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
Problem with accents with CommonsHelperHello Magnus, I'm coming here about the tool CommonsHelper. There's a few bug requests about it, but it looks like you don't have too much time to deal with them... which is understable. There is one however which makes the whole transfer process really tedious for French-speaking people : Commonshelper tranforms accentuated letters in the description. For instance, "é" becomes "é", and so on for all the accents. It is a pain because in French we use a lot of "é", "è", "à" etc. and after each transfer I have to spend time correcting all of them in the description. If CommonsHelper cannot be fixed about this, maybe your bot can be teweaked the following way : after a successful transfer, it will edit the description and transform all "é" back into "é". Most of the letter combination are like this one, really really unusual, so I think it should be fine to do an automatic correction. If it is feasible, I can provide the list of replacements to be done. Thank you for considering this issue ! le Korrigan →bla 18:38, 28 September 2008 (UTC) (note : you can have examples of this behaviour in most images of Category:Files moved from fr.wikipedia to Commons requiring review) File Upload Bot and cyrillic alphabetIt - is normal?!! --Kolossos (talk) 08:43, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

I find occasionally that manually reviewed Flickr images aren't the largest size available on Flickr. What if we had something like RotateBot, where if I find that Flickr has a larger size image (and it's the same -- i.e., hasn't been cropped or anything), then I could tag the Commons image and the bot would come around occasionally to the category and grab the largest versions. I know FlickreviewR does that on images that it reviews, but we have no process for manual images except doing it ourselves. Anyway, it's just a thought.

Wolfgang (Diskussion) 17:35, 27 November 2008 (UTC) Kategorien+SubkategorienDie Kategorie "Van Gogh Museum" kategorisiert automatisch "Van Gogh", d.h.
2.Paintings by... durch Works by ... ersetzen.
Wolfgang (talk) 13:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Normal or not?Hello Magnus. I was looking at new uploads and I spotted Image:Doma 3.jpg and Image:Doma 2.jpg, which look like the File Upload Bot uploaded them and tagged them as flickr-reviewed at the same time. The licensing is fine, so no problem there, but is this working as designed? Never saw your bot getting stuff from flickr before ... Cheers, Angus McLellan (Talk) 12:39, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Category intersectionsRe your message on wikitech-l: what's the difference to incategory searches using the normal MediaWiki search form? That works fine for atomic categories, too. (BTW, both approaches return the same seven articles.) Lupo 14:32, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello Magnus Manske/Archive 4! Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help. You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery. The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 06:01, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Commons Helper toolHi Magnus. I'm writing here cos JIRA seems not to be working. We use your wonderful tool to move images from Polish Wiki, but I observed minor flaws that increase "hand work" and makes whole procedure less clear for newbies. The best would be to show you 2 examples of files moved from en and pl wiki respectively and you should get what I mean.
Pls note how nicely your tool is reading en-wiki template [10] Information - one has nicely all data still there - original text, original author and uploader. Only thing to do is correct/precise categories and that's all ([11]), however if u move sth from polish wiki you are not getting properly all that data. Pls compare original bot-made description and corrected one ([12]). One needs to manually add original source (if its sth more than just wiki), author if different than uploader and so on. I believe that cos on polish-wiki we are using different file description template ([13]), your bot is not able to recognize its fields properly and therefore import their data. Is it possible to fix it? I can help you to tell what is what in our template (however its pretty straightforward, cos Szablon:Grafika is literal translation of Template:Information from enwiki/Commons). Second minor thing is that your tool fails to properly recognize polish-fonts. Both in description and filename. And if there are polish fonts in a filename, usually option of uploading file under a different name doesnt work too. Usually we are anyway discarding polish fonts form filenames for uploading them on Commons, but like I said, its not possible automatically. I'd appreciate if u could take a look on those issues and I serve you with further descriptions if sth is unclear. U can contact me via Polish wiki discussion page or via Commons. thx in advance.
