For a quicker answer though, state your message here,
but drop me a link-back/notice ("Ping!") Here where I'm more
likely to see it soonest. I work on the other sister wiki's too, but
am usually frequently at least passing through
en.wikipedia to check something or another.
Thanks! //

Your new categories
[edit]What on earth are you doing with the Category:Regions of Pennsylvania categories? That makes no sense. This Category:Southwestern Pennsylvania is a disaster. --GrapedApe (talk) 16:34, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- How can you call start a disaster? I've not put anything much into any of them yet. Among other things the new cats avoid looping... To answer your question, regions X culture X geography. Nine parts, as is commonly referenced in media coverages. They'll list categories, Counties, maps, images and whatever can be related to the 'region' description, which is as I'm sure you're aware, at least half-cultural. England is smaller than Pennsylvania by way of comparison. Most of all, they give someone a place to park images that don't REQUIRE a intimate knowledge of categories in, categories by, and so forth... IN Pennsylvania. So in sum, they're big collections categories for things to be sorted to other more specific geographic categorizations (from my stand point, meaning at a later time -- I'm really trying to upload about 1000 pics, but didn't want to just park them anywhere and along the way I've been finding a lot of stuff that needs better filing, missing categories in extant schemes and so forth.) // FrankB 16:50, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- How exactly are you delineating what sub-areas comprise each area? Based on any generally accepted regional lines? For example, Erie is considered Western Pennsylvania in the Wikipedia article, but your system would put it Category:Northwestern Pennsylvania. The Category:Susquehanna Valley region you created overlays 3-4 other of your regions in your system (including Category:Northeastern Pennsylvania, Category:North Central Pennsylvania, and Category:Poconos.
- Would really like a response to this question.--GrapedApe (talk) 23:41, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- Also, what is difference between Category:Northcentral Pennsylvania and Category:North Central Pennsylvania? Between Category:South-central Pennsylvania and Category:South Central Pennsylvania?
- Why green?--GrapedApe (talk) 22:19, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- Also, why do you have "Northeastern Pennsylvania" in the descriptions for about half the regions?
- Also, you use no less than 8 different font combos in Category:Southwestern Pennsylvania. WHhyyyy?
- How exactly are you delineating what sub-areas comprise each area? Based on any generally accepted regional lines? For example, Erie is considered Western Pennsylvania in the Wikipedia article, but your system would put it Category:Northwestern Pennsylvania. The Category:Susquehanna Valley region you created overlays 3-4 other of your regions in your system (including Category:Northeastern Pennsylvania, Category:North Central Pennsylvania, and Category:Poconos.
- Duh, must be because I like the look, what do you figure? //FAB
- Also you used "it's" incorrectly. Should be "its." [2]
- Drat, hate when the fingers don't pay attention in eighth grade-or was it fifth? I trust you can do the traditional wiki 'unmercifully edit' typos too jig when you find one? //FAB
- Also, what's up with [3]? When you add a category, make sure you don't duplicate: Category:Buildings in Pennsylvania should be a parent of Category:Buildings in Southwestern Pennsylvania, but then again, you have to actually create Category:Buildings in Southwestern Pennsylvania first.--GrapedApe (talk) 22:07, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
ON W&J (My first college BTW), I generally add a few items to a category before committing to the creation of a category. Secondly, it will be as you infer, the intersection of buildings in Pennsylvania and the region. However, this schema is meant to be more of a list category not a category most specifically locating the media file's locale. General, not specific. Should help weed out oversubscribed {{Catcat}} and {{MetaCat}} categories which have accumulated a lot of media that should be elsewhere. I can sort by region most times by names, but have NO PRAYER of sorting such by County excepting a few locales. Ditto by city, town, et al. Hence a regional definition of things as a schema makes much sense to me.
Sorry you feel I'm not moving fast enough, but I'm juggling a number of things, including various article creations on en.wikipedia necessitated and inspired by the need to upload a bunch of images (tab awaits) which tie into these categories as well. All going well, these will have some content later tonight. Right now I have a chore to do in the household. Otherwise the wife might be upset! // FrankB 22:36, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- So, these categories are to be "regional", but you're not going to categorize cities or counties within those regions? Like not add Category:Pittsburgh to Category:Southwestern Pennsylvania?--GrapedApe (talk) 02:47, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- How did you ever get the idea that I wouldn't cross-cat Cities and towns? Any pertinent NAMED THINGS somehow construable (e.g. Cultural terms are far broader and more encompassing than a geographical one, the second would fix a firm line of demarcation-a border, the first might include several counties in two or three abutting regions, Schylkill County for example) being listed in the REGION-blurring the border into a zone or area, my intent here, since it makes it easiest to pre-park images that can be further classified in the many by this and by that categorization schemes.
- The intent here is not to narrow, but to make a more user friendly set of categories for "readers and lay people" to goto. Listing a governmental entity one might expect to find in the region is a likely starting point to fulling them up with sensible subcategories. I want to give some thought to sort pipetricks before making that succession of edits. Any suggestions? // FrankB 14:53, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- re: this diff and specifics, the point is if anyone can make a rationale that A belongs in region C, and B in D, but Harry can make a case B is also in C, they can both be happy. Consider the Wyoming Valley, Central, Northern, Eastern all can be justifiably made as cases. "CULTURE" is what people believe and NAMES are what some call them. The press, media voices, and advertising execs that coin names ("Best FORD Dealer in the XXXX Valley since 1932!") generally set things up in buzz names ("THE POCONOS", "Pennsylvania Dutch", etc.) SO this takes the edge off the academic narrow mindedness and supplies a schema in the vernacular. How exactly things shake out... will come down to consensus, I imagine. Since adjacent regions should only intersect in the parent type cat Regions of Pennsylvania, looping is avoided, are there concerns I'm otherwise missing. My recollection was the more categories an image could fit, the better as more people would be likely to find it. Since there are ample NARROW categories (e.g. Brick buildings in Philadelphia) I mean these to be more the antithesis, loose general categories which on the one hand link narrower categories that apply to many things (by Counties) // FrankB 02:46, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
- Seems to me that this is a recipe for Spaghetti code-style categories. But, as long as you finish it and the final product makes sense, I'm convinced that there may be value to them. I've taken your invitation to "unmercifully edit" Category:Northeastern Pennsylvania already, and I'll work my way through the remainder.--GrapedApe (talk) 11:31, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

- Marked as Speedy Delete, slow down a bit!. I have a lot of other stuff going on! Spent most of last night NAMING photos for uploading, picking categories and readying that. This schema is a back burner side project that came up shopping categories for 1000 photos. Making systematic progress against the tyranny of those numbers is a somewhat higher priority. The porting and maintenance of this schema is a 'do this on the laptop whilst watching TV' task, not prime time! // FrankB 18:14, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
There is absolutely no need for this template {{Regions of Pennsylvania}}. Upload the images at your pace, and let me do the summaries of the categories.--GrapedApe (talk) 00:51, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- HOW ABOUT MY PERSPECTIVE... There is absolutely no reason for you to be intruding into a schema I was in the middle of working out, and ... the template was intended from the outset. UNLIKE YOU, I'm not going to assume people know how to use a schema by mental telepathy. // FAB

Actually, kudos. I saw these recently as the improvement you intended. My apologies if I seemed put out but was juggling a lot of open browser tabs. Our communications kind of side tracked me, and temporarily derailed matters on that computer--which alas is where I have to upload from. They're about set--need to find the notes docs files with the pre-sorted category groups. // FrankB 20:32, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Empty sub-categories in Category:Regions of Pennsylvania
[edit]When are you going to populate the sub-categories of Category:Regions of Pennsylvania, that you spent so much effort creating (and then fighting me about User talk:Fabartus#Your new categories)? It's been 8 months and none of those sub-categories have more than a handful of files. The whole reason you were going to create those categories is because you were going to "upload about 1000 pics."--GrapedApe (talk) 03:41, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Guilty, but frankly, by the time I went through and set up a text file with various categories and messages for this group and that group of photos, life moved on and with the uncertainty of waiting for what you were going to do,... I'd just set it all aside (for then). I was also quite busy with a wiki and then that sequed into a Wikibook overhaul, which is still monopolizing my discretionary time.
- But mostly... Shortly after our discussions, I got a new computer, had to get used to a new OS, set it up and try to get productive, etc., and hence one result is the older tower's been off and unused from October until yesterday when I needed to find a .pdf service manual for repairing my Gravely tractor.
- One of the bigger problems for me at my age... is doing that sort of stuff would best be done from my old, slow laptop... so I can drone on from the easy chair so to speak! That's a double hit on the network over a wireless, so really ought be done on one of the desktops... where I sit when my brain is functioning (more or less).
- I did take time to label them and group by folders and so forth, so once I find the time to look and find the notes and categories cheat sheet, I can move along fairly quick. I'll prioritize that a bit and so should continue uploading those in the next week to ten days. Thanks for the nudge. I've a couple dozen more recent to do too. Possibly over half of railyard shots taken back in late April--see my uploads on 29 April. IIRC, to do that to my standards, I was up until 4-5 am—which, as I'm pushing 60, makes for a rough work day and then then next two or three after THAT! (see pic CAPTION above). Best regards, FrankB 03:20, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Could you, then, at least populate those categories with other images/categories from the different regions of the state? That way, there's not just empty categories sitting around while you upload images.--GrapedApe (talk) 10:44, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

- Neither probably do anything (looks like about 10-12) in trap cat Category:Trainz obsolete param trapped, so perhaps I didn't make myself understood. I'm in the middle of altering the tagging template, so all these issues will be non-issues, but mostly so it's simple and easy to use for those who are at best, reluctant wiki editors.
Likely ALL Those in that category need additional fixup edits, but there's the prioritization and 'the surprises' in the way, when I miss a pipe or have a unpaired tags for html comments, finding the flow problem can take quite a while. Spent over five hours yesterday tracking down just such a problematic comment situation. So taking a iterative approach, when something 'fails to work' as expected, I stop retagging to work over the template until I see what I expected. So still a WIP... but, my time demands permitting, still on it and will resolve all pretty darn soon. It's actually one of my highest priorities right now. //FrankB 15:16, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Geography by place has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
File:2016-01-12 092300 TANE Driver Module Loading Splash Screen.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi, since this is a personal template, please move it into your userspace, i.e. to User:Fabartus/FABImage. Thanks, FDMS 4 19:11, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- If you've got a bot, you move it. I'm still trying time to upload several thousand pics and illustrations... (It's used on too many pages for me to take the time to use an unnecessary and ex-post-facto policy.) Besides, I'd never remember the name if it were in user spaces. FrankB 13:52, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks, I'll use VFC to replace the usages then. Regarding Trainz images, I'm afraid very many of them are non-free (nominating those for deletion is on my to-do list) – please note that when you take a screenshot of software that does not explicitly allow use and modifications by anyone, for any purpose, even commercially (free software), the screenshot is a derivative work of unfree content and as such cannot be hosted on Commons. FDMS 4 15:24, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- If you're going to that, just move them to Wikibooks, where free use reigns, and drop a list of titles on one of my talks. I'll clean up the use tagging et. al. There are less than fifty overall, iirc. Butting heads with the company has become a way of life, I'm afraid, or we'd be talking thousands. Which is kind of demotivating for working on a book about their products! Sigh. // FrankB 21:42, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with Wikibooks and its Exemption Doctrine Policy and don't think all images could be transferred under Wikipedia's EDP, so I'd rather drop a list of files on your talkpage and give you the time you need to do the transferring before opening a RFD. Re do a speedy by moves in your edit summary: Were you referring to the redirects to User:Fabartus/FABImage? If yes, I'd be glad to nominate them (CSD G2). FDMS 4 22:21, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
