TSD

[edit]

--Kolossos (talk) 17:03, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gigapan vs Macro

[edit]

I am impressed by this technology, my work is mostly macro. Have you tried the GigaPan for macro? Merci --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:08, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not jet, what size do have in mind. My camera has a nearest focus distance of 42 cm at f=120mm. So i could try a gigapan of 15x15cm or so. two problems could be: The nodal point must be more exactly and depth of field is more restricted. Do you have an idea for a motive? --Kolossos (talk) 11:19, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I increase the sharpness in extreme circumstances as in: File:Heliophyllite3.jpg do you think this is possible with the Gigapan?--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 15:52, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I know this technic. It should be possible manually but I don't know a camera that make automatically a image series with various focus. After this I would say first it would be good to make focus stacking and than panorama stacking. Seems to be a lot work , perhaps it's easier to take a electron microscope [1] ;-). --Kolossos (talk) 20:00, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for all this information, I will inquire about CombineZM. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 17:16, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Geocoding/Panorama project bug

[edit]

Hi,

I was using your panorama script, nice idea btw., though I was unfortunately not successful. And found some issue with umlauts in the generated template. If you enter an image name containing umlauts for the GET-parameter in the address bar, they're double utf8-encoded. (At least in my browser:Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 SUSE/3.5.9-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.9)

Here:

|image=".utf8_encode($image)."<br>

Oh, and how about giving the labels some transparency e.g.:

background-color:rgba(200, 200, 255, 0.3);

Thanks! --Burny (talk) 20:43, 17 June 2010 (UTC), edited --Burny (talk) 20:49, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Defekte Datei / "Virus" in File:Dresden-Fuerstenzug4.jpg

[edit]

Hallo Kolossos.

--Kolossos (talk) 16:48, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kolossos!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Kolossos! Lueger in Category:Lexikon der gesamten Technik by Otto Lueger umzubenennen angetragen.

--Boerl2 (talk) 21:42, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lieben Gruß, WikiAnika (talk) 10:56, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed coordinates in commons-on-osm

[edit]

Hi, Kolossos. Thanks for http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/openlayers/commons-on-osm.php. Maybe it would be faster — or at least cleaner — if it didn’t store long‐ungeocoded objects, like File:WLANL - arts of akki - Zonnebloemen, Vincent van Gogh, 1889.jpg (ungeocoded in June 2010) and some others, which you can see when visiting the page without any coordinates (also for some reason that 0,0 point is called South Pole — old tiles, I guess). --AVRS (talk) 22:00, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please ask this question User:Para. He handle all the data at http://toolserver.org/~para/GeoCommons/ . I only include his layer on a OSM-map. --Kolossos (talk) 08:47, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OSM relations, ways and so one

[edit]

Hello, since the WMF have their own servers, do you think that it could be possible to get the link of the nodes, ways or relations ? Like this one in order to have the better view of the subject ? Could we also have a bot which search on the OSM servers (of WMF) the key wikipedia ? And compare the coordinates of the object with the GPS coordinates ? Thanks for your attention Otourly (talk) 18:24, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I work together with User:Master to use the Wikipedia-Key to embed OSM-Objects in our OSM-map. This should work without any change in Wikipedia. See: Principle of work. I will keep you I mind and give you a message if first tests are available.
Links to an OSM-ID's seems not a good idea, because they are not stable.
I hope that the New Wikidata project will be successful so that we would have a central place to save links/queries to OSM. --Kolossos (talk) 18:30, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I imagined that OSM-ID's could change (if someone destroy an element and re-create it after). But I didn't think that it could be really unstable. As I understand you will have the same result by parsing the OSM's tag called wikipedia than the idea I write. Ok that's seems great ! Otourly (talk) 17:07, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Problem is that you start with a simple street with one osm-ID. Later somebody detect that there is a little brigde on this street and he split the street so that you have 3 OSM-IDs. Also other edits makes it necessary to split ways e.g. different speed-limits / different surface on parts of the street. So it's not a good idea. --Kolossos (talk) 22:07, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I will follow your work with interest :) Otourly (talk) 18:43, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For your information : Template_talk:Location#Add_an_optionnal_parameter_for_OpenStreetMap (it's currently based and ways nodes and so one, I know it's not the good way but it's a start. I assume a Bot could upgrate them all easily after. Otourly (talk) 20:04, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No photo report

[edit]

Greetings! I have been using this link to find wp.en articles on local places that lack a photograph. Unfortunately, the underlying KML service doesn't seem to have been working consistently in the last week. Should I be using a different link? Thanks! Bovlb (talk) 23:35, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For me it works.
You can try OpenStreetMap as Baselayer in this tool. The KML is the same. There are a lot of reasons possible, so I and the WMF are working on https-support and also Google is working on Google Maps. Sometimes also the Toolserver very slow. So can't say the reason. --Kolossos (talk) 19:54, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. It was your mention of HTPPS that gave me the clue. I changed the underlying toolserver link from HTTP to HTTPS and now it works. [2]. Thank you. Bovlb (talk) 21:34, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Erlwein-Büste von Georg Wrba

[edit]

Hallo Kolossos, kannst Du mir bitte mitteilen, wo die von Dir aufgenommene oben genannte Büste steht (File:Dresden-Erlwein-Wrba.jpg)? Danke! MfG --Dgarte (talk) 08:43, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

[edit]

Hallo Kolossos,

Hallo Kolossos, die URL https://tools.wmflabs.org/zoomable-images/zoomify.php?path= meldet „No webservice“.

Oh. Zum "rippen" sozusagen? --Dschwen (talk) 22:34, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Es funktioniert wieder. Was man damit alles machen kann, ist hier erklärt. --Trzęsacz (talk) 21:19, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen

[edit]

Hallo Kolossos,

Tschüß
Euer

Commons on OSM

[edit]

Hi Kolossos, do you know maybe, who is the developer-maintainer of this tool? I received messages, that it isn't updated for images uploaded in the last 5-6 months. (See others reports here on Commons, and on phabricator). It looks like a long-standing problem. Thanks! Samat (talk) 10:34, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Samat: Sorry for late response. I only handle the frontend of the tool commons-on-osm. The problem is in the backend geocommons, which was maintained by user:Para and now perhaps by User:Sladen. You can ask them. Alternative is perhaps the new tool wikimaps. It works with stable API from WMF. --Kolossos (talk) 22:17, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Medea-chart database on old nautical charts

[edit]

Hi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([3]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [4]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that. Registration is only required for those interested in downloading high resolution images or producing reports. Best wishes and have fun, Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:19, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
