Please don't overwrite images with a good source as File:Wilhelm Simmler-Haff-Ruhmeshalle.jpg with such ridiculous photo shop experiments. Thank you Mutter Erde 78.51.152.94 19:07, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen only now that you were so kind to have fixed my english user page! Really thank you! Unfortunately, I'm only en-3! :-) If you have time, I would like to ask you a favour! :-) Could you be so kind to fix also the english syntax of this page: User:Filnik/License_missing? Now it's protected, so if you have time please write me so I will unblock it :-) The reason is that this page is heavily visited and it should be well written but I can't find some motherlanguage that can help me! Thank you again, --Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 18:23, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Page unlocked :-) If you meant also this page: User_talk:Filnik/Talk, feel free to do every correction that you prefer! :-) If you instead mean to correct the messages of the other users, well, better not to do so (sometimes people don't like that but I dunno why). Thanks again! :-) --Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 08:20, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The link you have given to me, it's not a wikipedia page :-) So, you can simply copy the text in the page and then copy it here with the corrections: User:Filnik/Sandbox. After I've taken the text, I will delete the page again ;-) Thanks for your help! --Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 17:23, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wisconsin barns

[edit]

Thank you for your work with categorizing them. I notice that you uploaded numerous images of barns in Wisconsin. I'm from that state! If you upload an image of a Wisconsin location listed on the National Register of Historic Places, please add it to Category:National Register of Historic Places in Wisconsin. I'd appreciate it if you would also add the image to the NRHP article on the English Wikipedia [1]? I've been trying to systematically take pictures of these places and I'd hate to duplicate our efforts. Thanks! Royalbroil 03:39, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it looks like you've done most of my suggestions! I did add these to the NRHP category. Let me know if you need a picture of a place in the eastern half of Wisconsin. I do drive around on misc trips from time to time and there's a chance I might be able to take it. Royalbroil 03:49, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cornelis Visscher

[edit]

It's Cornelis Visscher, not Cornelis de Visscher, according to several sources, including the Rijksmuseum. If you could revert the changes you made, that'd be great. Thanks! Regards, Kweniston (talk) 16:36, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done When consolidating all the pictures into one category, I opted for the existing artist template titled "Cornelis de Visscher" [[2]] simply because it was there. Now I've moved all the images to "Cornelis Visscher" [[3]] and linked that category to the template. What do you think? Should the template be deleted? Bernhard von Bülow

where did you find the picture of mr.bülow?do you know more from him???? I´m very interesting!!! have you an email? u.gollesch

Do you mean the cartoon File:Brand, Adolf - from - Kladderadatsch (Berlin) - 27 October 1907.jpg? I found that cartoon in the journal Kladderadatsch, which is in many German libraries, especially in Berlin, where it was originally published. Jdsteakley (talk) 22:56, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I saw that you took a lot of pictures of different Stolpersteine in Berlin. In case you are still interested in this subject: I rewrote the German article on de:Fritz Pfeffer, who got a Stolperstein in Berlin in 2007. It is located on the corner of Passauer Straße/Lietzenburger Straße. Is it possible for you to take a picture of that stone? It would be great for the article. Okay, on my next trip to Berlin I will take a picture. I expect to go to Berlin in August. Jdsteakley (talk) 20:23, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was at Schloss Charlottenburg yesterday, and while the painting (and variations on its theme by other artists) were an important part of the currently ongoing exhibition, they didn't seem to have a postcard of it in the museum store. Background removal (Graphic Lab/Photography workshop)

[edit]

Your request of Background removal have been done, please have a look. Ivan Akira (talk) 05:53, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid your deletion request to File:Ferdinand von Schill (Schnupftabakdose).jpg might be rejected according to the Commons:Superseded images policy, and you can even read the discussion at Commons talk:Superseded images policy. So, your edit which remove the link to File:Ferdinand von Schill (Schnupftabakdose).jpg should be reverted I think. Ivan Akira (talk) 00:00, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Ivan. Thank you for pointing me to this discussion of superseded images, which I was entirely unaware of. Reading through (parts of) the very lengthy discussion, it seems to me that there are two key issues here. One is the matter of licensing, and in the present case that doesn't really matter, because this is a public domain art image. The second, possibly more important issue, is the transparent background of a png image, which apparently is not readable with the Windows Explorer browser. -- With this image, I was concerned that the cloth visible in the background might be protected by copyright. It shows that a photographer at the Berlin Museum was hard at work, and created an original image. The circular image, on the other hand, lacks originality (at least within the past 200 or so years), and therefore can be copied for Wikimedia. -- Now I am wondering whether it is possible for you to change the png image once again, so that a neutral (perhaps white, or perhaps black) background appears where it is now transparent. That way, it would be possible to upload the image as a jpg which could be opened with all browsers. What do you think? -- Jdsteakley (talk) 00:16, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, about the IE issue, let's talk it here, not in the graphic lab. Based on my observation, the PNG transparency problem only occur at Internet Explorer version 6 and its predecessors. While start from version 7 (the latest version is 8) there are no problem in PNG transparency (I'm already confirmed this through test in my IE 6 and IE 8 browser). So based on my personal opinion, you shouldn't need to worry about the transparency issue anymore. Simply because almost every Internet Explorer users now using the version 7 or 8. -- And, how about the request? Are you still want me to make the round photo to square? If you do, I will do it after you reconfirm. Okay? You can answer either at this talk page or at graphic lab, but not both :-). Ivan Akira (talk) 11:54, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Ivan, for this update on viewing transparent area on Internet Explorer. That was my only reason for wanting a square image, not a round one, so let's just skip that and leave the image as it is. Now I'll try to figure out a different rationale (other than "superseded") for getting the original jpg deleted. -- Jdsteakley (talk) 20:01, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then~ so I think I'll re-set the request as resolved. Ho ho ho. Ivan Akira (talk) 07:07, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am in complete agreement. -- Jdsteakley (talk) 14:14, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Biodiversity Route - photo

[edit]

Hello, My name is Rita Neves. I work in Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, that is a Public Organization in Portugal. Actually, we are working on a road book of Biodiversity of Lisbon, for which we are going to produce a panel and a brochure. We found your photos on Wikimedia Commons and liked specially one of them very much, so we would like to know if you could allow us to use your photo, for free, to publish on this project, knowing that the brochure will be for free distribution to everyone. The photo we are considering to use is the following: Phoenix_canariensis_2 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenix_canariensis_(2009).jpg

The brochure will have four divisions.
-Brochure a -- a pocket to take the route.
-A brochure to present on the day of inauguration.
-Keys for species identification.
-Panels that will be fixed in the land.

As I said, everything will be Free Access  :) If you are the author and provide us that photo, we will refer your name in the bibliography and we need to know what´s the name you want on the bibliography? James Steakley? If it´s possible please respond to ritasoraia2001@hotmail.com or rita.neves@cm-lisboa.pt or here on Wikimedia. Thank you very much. Our best regards

Yes, certainly you have my permission to use the photo of Phoenix canariensis in your upcoming publications. As for credit, I would like it to say: James Steakley (Wikimedia Commons).

Historic House exhibit

[edit]

Hello. I apologize if I am doing this incorrectly. My name is Kaitlin Ammon and I am the curator at the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, located in Paris, TX. Our website is www.visitsambellmaxeyhouse.com.

We are planning a new temporary exhibit for our historic site. Part of that exhibit will focus upon the Italianate architecture of the Maxey House and we want to display pictures of other Italianate houses to compare the Maxey House to. On Wikimedia Commons, I found your image of the Fitzgerald Home, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The address is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fitzgerald__Home_Milwaukee.jpg. It states that this photo is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. I wanted to make sure that this is still the case, as well as personally ask your permission to use this photograph in our upcoming exhibit, which we will attribute to you in the manner of your choosing as specified in the license.

The exhibit will be a free exhibit for any visitors who stop by the Maxey House while we are currently under construction and unable to offer guided tours of the actual house. We do not plan to use the photo in any way other than as an image in our free exhibit. If this use is agreeable to you, please send me the wording for your photo attribution here or at my work email address, kaitlin.ammon@thc.state.tx.us. Also, please feel free to email me if you have any further questions. Thank you in advance for your time.Kammon (talk) 21:06, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, certainly you have my permission to use the photo of the Fitzgerald House in your upcoming exhibition. As for credit, I would like it to say: James Steakley (Wikimedia Commons). It would be wonderful if you could upload a photo of the Maxey House to Wikipedia or Wikimedia, for it could then illustrate the Wikipedia article on the house. -Jdsteakley (talk) 10:35, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
File:Forward 1893.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Jdsteakley, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

I will point out that those two files do not belong into Category:Viking fibulae because they are from the Migration period and not from the Viking period. You have placed them in that category three times now without giving any reasons why. Do you have scources that say they are dated from the Viking period? Please share them with me then. / Achird (talk) 13:27, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mengs' four times of the day personified

[edit]

Hello! Thanks for adding Mengs' paintings of Diana, Helios and Hesperus, from Roettgen's Anton Raphael Mengs 1728-1779, vol. 2: Leben und Wirken. The description says he painted four, but I can't find any more about the last one; do you know if still exists, and if so whether it's in the book? Thanks. ‑‑xensyriaT 15:11, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

[edit]

Hallo Jdsteakley,

[edit]

Dear Jdsetakley,

In connection with the Luther-anniversary in 2017, a new website is being made (by a project group connected with the National Museum of Denmark) that will explore Martin Luther in words and pictures. We would very much like to use your photo of the Spangenberg-painting "Luther im Kreise seiner Familie musizierend." However, I am in doubt about the license for the photo - can we use it, and if so, how would you like to be credited?

Best regards, Cecilie Bønnelycke

Student Assistant National Museum of Denmark - Middle Ages, Renaissance and Numismatics

Hello, Cecilie Bønnelycke -- I am interested to hear about your website project and would like to help you as much as possible. If I had photographed the painting in question myself, then I could (and gladly would) give you permission to use the photograph. But I only copied and uploaded an existing photograph / scan, an action which is permissible on Wikimedia because the image is in the "public domain" under the terms of copyright law in the USA (where Wikimedia Commons is legally located), specifically because (1) the painting was made by a painter now deceased for more than 100 years and (2) any faithful two-dimensional copy (photograph / scan) of such a painting lacks copyright protection because the copy does not have the originality of an actual work of art. As you may already know, the copyright situation in Denmark is far more restrictive: Reuse of Public Domain Art -- Denmark. Therefore I can only suggest that you consult with a Danish lawyer about reusing the Wikimedia file or alternatively seek permission from the owner of the painting to have a photographer make a (new) photograph of the painting and grant you permission to use it. I am sorry to say that I do not know the location of the painting, be it in a museum or a private collection, but hopefully you can track down the location / owner and request a new (or even an old) photograph, and get the permission of the museum / owner to use it on your website. On the other hand, perhaps your Danish lawyer will simply say it is permissible to use the existing Wikimedia file. After all, your project is educational, not commercial. If your lawyer approves using the Wikimedia file, you can completely skip giving credit to me or Wikimedia. From our perspective, the painting image (any two-dimensional copy) is now in the public domain (at least in the USA and other countries with the 100-year rule, though not in Denmark). Good luck!--Jim Steakley (talk) 17:33, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jim Steakley, thank you for your answer! Indeed, the copyright situation is quite restrictive here in Denmark, so I will follow your advice and consult our lawyers about using the Wikimedia file. The painting itself turns out to be rather difficult to find - perhaps because it is in a private collection somewhere - so I don't know if it will be possible to get a photo of the work directly from the owner of the painting. Still, thank you very much for your advice! Kind regards, Cecilie.

Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen

[edit]

Hallo Jdsteakley,

Observation towers in Baden-Württemberg/in the Black Forest

[edit]

--Sitacuisses (talk) 19:27, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Danke! Das wird's wohl sein. --Jdsteakley (talk) 19:30, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Was sind deine Pläne mit Category:Panoramio photos of the Black Forest ?

--GFHund (talk) 00:09, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

--Jdsteakley (talk) 08:23, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
--GFHund (talk) 08:32, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria cruziana

[edit]

Hi Jdsteakley,

I requested a name change for File:Victoria cruziana - Basel.jpg to V. amazonica. As I found out, when I was there, recently, it is indeed amazonica. See the talk-page. I will also change the meta-data. I suppose you've been to the Botanischer Garten der Uni Basel as well. Was that in sept. 2010? Have you been there since? Many greetings, viele Grüsse. --Dick Bos (talk) 06:57, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! In fact, a Victoria amazonica nametag is visible in the center of the photograph. I can no longer remember why I uploaded the photo as Victoria cruziana in 2010 -- possibly there was a redirect page in Wikimedia back then. By the way, I haven't returned to the Botanischer Garten in Basel since 2010 and would very much like to pay another visit. --Jdsteakley (talk) 13:10, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Darum habe ich die Category:Carnivals of Germany by location weiter befüllt.

It appears to be a manuscript containing Historia Langobardorum by Paulus Diaconus instead.

The text seems to recemble Historia, and also I googled for Ms. Phil. 1886... the site of of SBB is down, but I found a catalogue with a detailed description, also it is in Waitz in MGH SRG 48 / MGH SRL (de:Monumenta Germaniae historica Scriptores rerum Germanicarum in usum scholarum separatim editi (SS rer. L accordign to text dependencies ([4] [5]), this one is G6.

P.S. SBB site is working: [6]. P.P.S. Thank you very much for bibliographical information, so it was possible to identify it:)--90.154.72.166 01:32, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating redirects for deletion

[edit]

Hi, Jdsteakley. If you nominate redirects for deletion, please add speedy tag not after, but before redirect. When situated after redirect, then wiki software shows in speedy deletion requests category like you want to delete whole file. Experience is needed to understand, that only redirect is needed to delete. Taivo (talk) 13:43, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Physical culture

[edit]

Hi, you removed nearly 100 people from the "People associated with physical culture" category. Your reason was "removed redundant category". This is not accurate. The people on the list were all involved in physical culture or wrote about that topic. Physical culture is a specific field of strength training that originated in the 19th century that involved many physical activities from boxing to yoga.

On Wikipedia many of those people have Wikipedia articles where their involvement in physical culture is clearly sourced. In the last 2 years I have become very educated about historical physical culture and communicated with several physical culture historians. I even sent them the list and they were impressed with the work I did on Commons. I believe those 100 names should be restored to the category. The category is useful to find historical individuals associated with physical culture from the 19th century to the 1960s. You seem to have confused physical culture with something else because you have put sub-categories in the "People associated with physical culture" such as bodybuilders, boxers, gymnasts, strongmen, strongwomen, weightlifters and wrestlers. The problem is that most of those people were not associated with physical culture. Physical culture is pre-steroids and pre- performance-enhancing drugs. Most of the people in those sub-categories are nothing to do with physical culture. I believe we should restore the changes. I understand you have probably confused "physical culture" with anything physical but that is not what physical culture is. This is a historical discipline. Psychologist Guy (talk) 23:09, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Psychologist Guy! -- First of all, thank you very much for creating the category "People associated with physical culture" earlier this year and for adding all the individuals to it. I spotted the category some months ago but have only been working with it for a few days now and am far from finished. I will be adding about 50 more individuals to the category in the coming days. Their names are at the bottom of the Wikipedia article on "Physical culture" -- specifically, the "antecedents", the "Europeans", and the "Indians" along with a few more who are named in the other articles at the very bottom of the page (for example François Delsarte, named in the article on "Battle of the Systems"). Up to now, I have finished only the "New World" individuals (US, Canada, Australia), both copyediting the Wikipedia articles on them and also revising the Wikimedia categories of their images. I'll do the same for the remaining Europeans, Indians, and antecedents in the coming days. -- I have no objection whatsoever to restoring or adding any individuals to the category "People associated with physical culture", and please feel free to do so, keeping in mind that I'll be doing the antecdedents, Europeans, and Indians, etc. anyway. But in those cases, I wlould favor adding their names to the list at the bottom of the Wikipedia article. -- I'm aware that physical culturists are not (necessarily) the same as "bodybuilders, boxers, gymnasts, strongmen, strongwomen, weightlifters and wresters" as well as yoga adepts, fencers, etc. Do you think it would better to turn these categories into "See also" entries? That might indicate more 'distance' from physical culture than the current subcategory status. -- And speaking of subcategories, what do you think of adopting the subcategories that appear in Wikipedia (New World, European, Indian, antecedents) and using them as subcategories in Wikimedia? These would appear with names such as "Europeans associated with physical culture" or "People associated with physical culture from Europe"; "People associated with physical culture from the United States" or "United States people associated with physical culture"; etc. I find it difficult work with that epithet "New World", although it seems entirely appropriate on the Wikipedia page. --Jdsteakley (talk) 11:32, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

University and college yearbooks has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, I was very sad to see that Wikipedia have't picture of René Schérer, your pictures comme at the good time ! I think that pictures of René Schérer are not in large number in free licenses. One of them is already used for this french link : [7]. Best regards. Siren-Com (talk) 15:04, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Any other Dick Wagner pics?

[edit]

Hi Jim, I hope you're doing well - it's been a while! I am starting on a wikipedia article for Dick Wagner, and I was hoping you might have some additional photos of him - there are three here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:R._Richard_Wagner - I was going to crop the pride parade marshalls photo to take out Tammy and Mark and just have Dick, but if there's anything better that you've got it'd be awesome to use that instead!

There are some good photos on Flickr that I might ask the Library if they'll change the license on so we could use those: https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=%22richard%20wagner%22%20madison Thanks! 23:05, 15 August 2023 (UTC) Erik s paulson (talk) 23:05, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Erik -- I have a few more photos of Dick, but they are a little out of focus. I will upload them to Commons anyway, and you can use one if you like. It would be great if you could use one of the sharp photos from the Library. Jdsteakley (talk) 08:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Studnitz-Pyramide (Gotha)

[edit]

Hi, What was the reason to move Studnitz-Pyramide to Studnitz-Pyramide (Gotha)? Is there a further Studnitz-Pyramide outside Gotha? Regards --A.Savin 11:53, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Pyramids are organized by place at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Pyramids_in_Germany, and without (Gotha) it would be unclear why the Studnitz-Pyramide appears under "G" rather than "S". --Jdsteakley (talk) 14:36, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
