Actually I'm no expert - I upload only stuff I've taken myself. However - looking at {{Template:PD-author}} it must have the "author" as a parameter on the template & that is missing from the ones you have done.

Short on time at present but take a look at the pages (& any related stuff) and you may well work it out. Nudge me again if I can help but I'm not around much at present sadly. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:44, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Cartes topographiques des Iles Britanniques

[edit]

Hello Hogweard. Thanks for the support and sorry for this late response.
Yes, for the Falkland's map I went further as I vectorized the altitude levels. This wasn't made without pain (a lot of work), but it was possible for that map because it was relatively simple: this is an archipelago, not very mountainous and I was able to keep the final file size reasonable. This would have been much more difficult for Scotland's map with its larger covered area, its higher mountains...
Note that even in the Falkland's map there's a raster layer: the relief shadows one. This one could also be vectorized but would make explode the file size if keeping a good visualization.
Since then and after reading a lot about the subject, I decided in most cases to stay with a full raster background because a map is meant to be displayed at a defined size (at its scale). If displayed or printed larger it may and probably will give the false impression that it is more precise than it really is.
About a United Kingdom's map, I'm glad you found one that seems to meet your needs because I'm very little active on WP for months now by lack of time, so creating such a big map would be very difficult for me at this time.
If you think about vectorizing a blank WP topographic map (like for example File:France_relief_location_map.jpg) I think you will face big difficulties because of the interfering shadow relief. In some cases (very few if I remember) in my svg maps with raster background the shadow relief is in a separate layer, so this will be easier, still not optimum.
I hope this helps. Greetings. Sting (talk) 21:46, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great work and still, I got a question on it
Hello Hogweard,

As you might see, I'm really new to the Wikimedia game. To be honest, I only registered here to ask you about the Falkland's Geology map you draw. Can you please tell me, what are the exact sources for the locations of the geologic units themselves and of the intrusive dykes, respectively. At some spots your units differ slightly from the published geological maps from the Falkland's that I know already. I would like to use your map in my PhD thesis and therefore of cause I need a solid source for it :) I hope, you will help me there Thanks a lot Marko MarkoGeophysicist (talk) 11:11, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Cerne-abbas-giant-1891-ordnance-survey.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. South Sudan border in maps request

[edit]

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in:

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 522 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself and also sophisticated PNG maps like orthographical maps and maps with topographical features, that is why I asked you.

Yours sincerely, Maphobbyist (talk) 11:06, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the updates! If it is not impertinent of me, can you also add the border of South Sudan in these maps below? I don't want to burden you with additional map requests, so this is my final request from you for this year.
There is an edit war going on here, but if it is allowed, could you add the border of South Sudan in these two maps?
Yours sincerely, Maphobbyist (talk) 14:49, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello.
Can you do the same changes you did in File:Giraffa camelopardalis distribution.svg to the other maps with the same graphics and dimensions? I have requested the addition of the border of South Sudan in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop under the title "South Sudan border" ✓ Done

I just discovered today that there was another file where the border of South Sudan needs to be added: File:Map of South Atlantic Express submarine cable route 2017.svg. I didn't know it existed, otherwise I would have put it in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop with the other files. Sorry. I won't bother you with this topic for a long time. I am doing my part by adding the border of South Sudan in uncomplicated PNG, JPG and GIF files. Maphobbyist (talk) 08:43, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

European Union Customs Union

[edit]

If you have a moment, another (new) map (based on file:European Union United Kingdom Locator.svg) is needed that shows the special status of Northern Ireland - part of the UK but simultaneously part of the Customs Union / Single Market in some respects. I suggest it would be unwise just to put NI in the same colour as the EU but equally unwise to put it in the same colour as GB. Maybe you could use alternate diagonal stripes?

BTW, please don't use Orange and Green, as these colours are closely associated with Unionism and Nationalism and would be seen as deliberately provocative even if it is inadvertent.

For more discussion, see en.wiki:Talk:European Single Market#Map update re: UK. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 15:53, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That could be an 'interesting' one. Article 4 of the Northern Ireland Protocol says "Northern Ireland is part of the customs territory of the United Kingdom". It is also the case that about seven time more trade goes between Ulster and Great Britain than across the border. Northern Ireland though has special access to the European market. That may mean less now that a zero-tariff agreement has been reached between the United Kingdom and the European Union. There is no contradiction nor clarification in the new 'Christmas Eve Agreement'.Hogweard (talk) 19:31, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think there may be a misunderstanding here. The status of Northern Ireland with respect to the EUCU was determined by the UK's Withdrawal Agreement of late 2019. Nothing in the the UK/EU trade deal of 24 December is especially relevant (except that trade between NI [not "Ulster" btw] and GB is not subject to tariffs as it otherwise might have been if you believed Johnson's bluff). NI is de facto in the EUCU but de jure not. There is no way to represent that on a map (unless you used diagonal stripes, perhaps?). --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 12:11, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Map update

[edit]

Hey! Just saw your map on this article https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Turkic_languages.svg (which is great btw), wanted to ask if it is possible for you to update it due to recent developments in Nagorno-Karabakh. Thanks! Mastersun25 (talk) 17:13, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'd rather hide under the table until the whole thing has gone away! The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has impinged on my consciousness over the years more than it ought to have, through people I have encountered at functions (in those distant days when there were such things as evening functions).
The map is a linguistic map rather than a political one. It is indicative, not precise, and shows a spread across the whole, broad continent. If ever the borders in the Caucasus get settled more firmly than current ceasefire lines then there will be several maps needing to be updated, and this may be one of them, but that also depends not just on political borders but also on where Turkic-speaking and Armenian-speaking people actually live, after the social devastation. Hogweard (talk) 13:45, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File:European Union United Kingdom Locator.svg

[edit]
European Union United Kingdom Locator.svg

I wonder if you are aware that your use of orange and green on this map is very 'loaded' with respect to the Northern Ireland conflict. If you have a moment, would you change the EU to its typical dark blue and the UK to pink or even red, please. (I bet there is a red/blue conflict somewhere too but I doubt if any are as provocative as using green and orange on the island of Ireland). Thanks. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 12:11, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I used the standard colours which Wikipedia uses for bilateral locator maps, used as in the maps seen in Category:Bilateral maps of the European Union or Category:Bilateral maps generally. It is no more than that. There is another version with the colours reversed too. I can add a blue and pink one perhaps, though users may prefer to follow the standard. Hello. I see that you have made the latest edit on File:HeroinWorld-en.svg. I am not familiar with SVG so wanted to request if you could make a change. I think the line and label of Afghanistan would be a lot better if it is positioned to the NE (around where Mongolia is on the map). Could you be able to carry it out? --Weaveravel (talk) 11:59, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.
This is my last request from you for this year. I am the same IP from yesterday. Can you also add the border of South Sudan in the duplicate maps File:HeroinWorld-He.svg (the border here is badly done), File:HeroinWorld-bn.svg and File:HeroinWorld-lt.svg from the English version File:HeroinWorld-en.svg?
That is all.
Yours sincerely, 31.200.14.183 15:08, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. 31.200.14.183 22:22, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

Hello.

Thank you very much for putting the border of South Sudan in the maps.

Can you remove Sudan/South Sudan from the Indian Ocean in File:Nuclear weapon programs worldwide.svg?

Can you add the Middle East and South Caucasus in File:Monde css mozilla.svg? There is a big gap in that map, because the two regions are missing. The duplicate version File:Monde css title mozilla.svg has both regions, but the border of South Sudan is missing there. Can you add the border in the latter map?

Can you add the border of South Sudan from the duplicate of File:Nile-en.svg, in File:Nile-bg.svg, File:Nile-fr.svg, File:Nile-hr.svg and File:Nile-ku.svg?

Can you add the border of South Sudan from the duplicate of File:Swahili pl.svg, in File:Swahili.png?

Yours sincerely, 31.200.15.122 12:31, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

All done apart from the PNG one - I just changed the maps on the two pages which used it. Hogweard (talk) 13:05, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the updates.
If it is not impertinent of me and not too demanding, can you add the Middle East and South Caucasus in File:Monde css mozilla.svg? There is a big gap in that map, because the two regions are missing. The duplicate version File:Monde css title mozilla.svg has both regions, but the border of South Sudan is missing there. Can you add the border in the latter map?
I can edit PNG, GIF and JPG maps, but not SVG maps. Thank you again for the updates. 31.200.15.122 13:26, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I looked again at File:Monde css mozilla.svg. It is more complicated, involving coding with which I am not familiar, and in fact my edits disrupted that to some extent. It is not used on any page, so it is not a priority. I may have a look at it as a personal challenge at some point, but it is not a priority. Hogweard (talk) 06:16, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update request

[edit]

Hello.

Can you add the border of South Sudan in File:Russian Federation (orthographic projection).svg, File:Rossija globus.png and File:Kashmir (orthographic projection).jpg just like File:Kashmir (orthographic projection).svg you uploaded?

Can you also add the border of South Sudan in the related File:Togoland map.png, File:German sw africa map.png and File:German east africa map.png?

(The rest are the remaining orthographic maps missing South Sudan: File:Vietnam (orthographic projection).svg, File:Undivided India.jpg, File:Iraq (orthographic projection).svg, File:Cyprus (orthographic projection).png, File:East Asian Cultural Sphere - Sinocentist.png and File:Greater Mongolia (orthographic projection).png)

Can you update the maps in the first two paragraphs (and the maps listed in brackets over the course of 2022)?

Yours sincerely, 31.200.10.183 18:42, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I only do SVG maps, because I have the software and sufficient expertise. SVGs are better for maps in any case and so should supersede JPEGs and PNGs. The latter are then left unused and so are not a problem. I produced SVG replacement maps for some of these.
One of the SVG maps you list does have the South Sudan border (File:Vietnam (orthographic projection).svg). Both of File:Russian Federation (orthographic projection).svg and File:Iraq (orthographic projection).svg have been locked against editing. I did a version of the latter though (File:Iraq (orthographic-projection).svg) and you could go through articles changing one to the other. However, on the English language Wikipedia, many of the articles using the map illustrate events or periods before South Sudan became independent, and in those contexts the old one is more appropriate so should not be replaced.Hogweard (talk) 23:09, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Update request for maps after foreign companies pulled out from Russia

[edit]

Hello. Can you remove Russia from the maps, after the foreign companies withdrew from its market?

I added news sources for each company as well as this comprehensive source: https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-300-companies-have-withdrawn-russia-some-remain

The withdrawals are semi-permanent, and not temporary/short-term.

Yours sincerely, 31.200.9.122 00:24, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The war won't last forever and the stores will reopen in Russia when they can, or when Twitter mobs allow them to.
Other things such as the South Sudan border are more long-term. I only have one pair of hands though and little free time. At some point will have a look at some of these. Hogweard (talk) 06:30, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. We don't know how long the war will last, but the sanctions and airspace bans don't look like short term endeavors measured in months, but more likely, could last for years, considering the sanctions applied to Russia because of Crimea since 2014. 31.200.9.122 18:37, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello.
Can you update these maps over an extended period, when you have time? The war might last for many months or even for years, and the sanctions and air blockades will only be lifted by the West according to their conditions, if the war ends and Russian troops leave Ukraine. Less severe sanctions, that are still binding, were already imposed back in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea. Thus, none of these sanctions are short-term actions.
Yours sincerely, 31.200.13.130 09:18, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this would be a breach of Wiki Commons policies and I do not want to get mired in it. The changes you have proposed looks like a political motive behind it, not a cartographical one.
Please familiarise yourself with the policy Commons:Overwriting existing files.
If a map is wrong, it can be corrected. Updates should usually be done with a new map. If it is a present-day map rendered out-of-date by a change presumed to be permanent then it could be legitimate to overwrite it, as I did with a number of bilateral maps involving the EU, or adding the South Sudan border to maps which should have had it in the first place. However it would have been wrong to add South Sudan to a map used to portray the world before 2011, or to take Britain out of the EU on a map used for to illustrate any time before January 2020. Maps of the EU have dates because they change.
Maps on Commons are not meant to change with the seasons. If the changes are to reflect the position at a moment in time, the appropriate approach is to produce another map, with a date. When the situation changes again, then another map can be created with a new date. If a map could show one side's opinion or another's, then have two maps. Hello.

In File:Government constitutional monarchy.svg, Monaco needs to be colored in light green, because the ruling prince wields a lot of constitutional power (see: en:Constitution of Monaco) and Barbados (the easternmost Caribbean island in the map) needs to be colored in gray, because it became a republic in 2021.

Yours sincerely, 31.200.13.53 07:46, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Arms of former Church of England dioceses

[edit]

@Hogweard: Hello there. Sorry for intruding, but since I noticed that you're the one who's created all the SVG files for the various coats of arms of the Church of England dioceses (and great job on those, by the way), I was wondering if you'd be able to create SVG files for the following three former dioceses of the COE (all of which were merged into the new Diocese of Leeds in 2014):

1) Diocese of Bradford arms, as seen here and here.

2) Diocese of Ripon and Leeds arms, as seen here and here.

3) Diocese of Wakefield arms, as seen here and here.

Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:11, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Like these ones? - Category:Coats of arms of former dioceses of the Church of England
(I was having a quiet evening, and these were mainly derivative.) Hogweard (talk) 15:01, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hogweard: Those are fantastic, thank you so much! Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 01:43, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hogweard: Actually, while we're still here, there's another former COE diocese that has come to my attention. Namely the Diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, which existed from 1836–1897. As its name suggests, it was a merger of the dioceses of Gloucester and Bristol, and thus its coat of arms (as seen here) reflected that. Any chance you could create an SVG version of that arms as well? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 01:37, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It should not take long if I get a spare evening. I have not been happy with the one I did for the Diocese of Bristol, so if I can find time to improve that one, I can look at the Diocese of Gloucester and Bristol too. I have using form of mitre I drew ages ago, with odd refinements and variations as the whim took me - for a diocese which spring into and out of existence in 19th century, a more Victorian style of heraldic mitre, or something that hints at it, might be more suitable, and that would take more time, unless I have one I used elsewhere. Hogweard (talk) 09:50, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hogweard: Thank you for taking the time to create that SVG file, very much appreciated! Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:04, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Former arms of current Church of England dioceses

[edit]

@Hogweard: Hello again. Sorry to bother you again so soon, but I was wondering if I could enlist your skills on another matter relating to COE heraldry, this time regarding former coats of arms of still-existing dioceses. Would you be willing to create SVG files for the old versions of the Diocese of Newcastle arms (as seen here and on this page here) and the Diocese of Oxford arms (as seen here and on this page here)? It would certainly be greatly appreciated. But of course I'd understand if you can't. Just thought I should ask. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:46, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will do a bit of research before launching into these. The Oxford one in particular may be Osney Abbey rather than the diocese, and according to one picture it may be the other way round, but I will ask someone in the diocesan offices if they have a history buff who might know. Hogweard (talk) 13:45, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The College of Arms has said about the old Newcastle shield: “The coat of arms you are referring to was used unofficially by the Diocese prior to its official grant of arms in 1949. The unofficial arms are not on record here and were never granted.” The Book of Public Arms is even more dismissive. I can see no reference yet to the Oxford one, except that a (much later) window in the Cathedral has a reverse version. I await the results of further research. Hogweard (talk) 19:56, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hogweard: Understood, and thank you profusely for taking the time to look into this. It really is a great help. Say, now that the status of the old Newcastle diocesan arms has been established, would you still be up for creating an SVG file of it? Because, even if it was unofficial, I still think it holds encyclopedic value for Wikipedia. Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:57, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will have a look at it. This ties in with another project I had in the back of my mind: an off-putting one because of the complexity required to satisfy my own ludicrous standards, and lack of time. I will see how I get on with that before using it for this one. Hogweard (talk) 09:44, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Aberdeenshire flag competition finalists

[edit]

@Hogweard: Hello, me again. Sorry to disturb. But I've noticed you're responsible for creating a lot of the SVG files of British county flags for Wikimedia, most recently that of Aberdeenshire. And I've recently created the Wikipedia page titled "Flag of Aberdeenshire" (which your file is of course featured on). So, I can't help but ask if you'd be willing to create SVG files for the other four finalists from the 2022 competition that led to the adoption of the Aberdeenshire flag? Because I really do think that such images would be more than relevant to the page. What do you think? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:23, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have them all already: I drew all the finalists, so that I would have one to upload when we knew which had won. What context would they be used in though? If you can find any statement about the copyright status of entries which did not win, that would help too. Hogweard (talk) 08:14, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying.
Regarding the matter of CR status, well, I tried reverse-image searching each flag, and I didn't see any concrete information on the flags' original designers (before Philip Tibbetts had them cleaned up for the shortlist that is). But if anything changes, I'll let you know. As for what context they'd be used in, I was planning on displaying them in the "Competition" section of the new page, with an accompanying description of what each of them stand for and the number of votes they got (based on the model used for the "Flag of Dorset" page).
And finally, thank you very much for uploading the flags there. I really do appreciate it greatly. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:42, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The map is an SVG adaptation of File:Aksai Chin Sino-Indian border map.png. The points that you refer to are confirmed on a map in a CIA briefing.
If you object to the points, the appropriate thing would be for you to produce your own adaptation of the map. Hogweard (talk) 20:46, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can see the PDF file of the source at page 91. The map depicted here is different than what has been presented in the SVG file.
Given the dispute among sources over pointers, they should be removed.
I uploaded the updated png version here. Kindly shift it to the concerning SVG. Capitals00 (talk) 08:26, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The map in question was produced in good faith with the assistance of those who are far more expert on the subject than I am. It is not now going to be changed, and I am keeping in mind the Commons policy of
COM:OVERWRITE. I am also aware that it is a highly contentious field, with many interpretations and points of view. In that case, the appropriate remedy if you want to see a map without the points in question is for you to upload a separate map with your version. That is up to you. Hogweard (talk) 12:00, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea how to upload SVG file. I hope you will update the version for me. Thanks. Capitals00 (talk) 17:27, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

South Sudan border for maps request

[edit]

Hello, Hogweard.

Can you add the border of South Sudan (which became independent in 2011) in these maps:

Yours sincerely, Oirattas (talk) 11:16, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Most of those are PNG file, which are best superseded with SVGs - indeed most of them have been. One is an animated GIF, which I can't do.
File:United Kingdom military bases worldwide.png needs an SVG version, but your observation is not quite correct: South Sudan has some 400 British soldiers on peacekeeping duty.
Of the SVGs, one already has South Sudan, while File:Map of the Arab-Israeli conflict-tag.svg is a historical map, correct for the time portrayed. Hogweard (talk) 17:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see. However, File:United Kingdom military bases worldwide.png, is about UK military bases only, not about British troops stationed under a UN peacekeeping mission in a multinational UN facility. Oirattas (talk) 09:18, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hartcliff folly.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
