Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Ggia!

I noticed that you try to change the license of this file from CC-BY (Attribution) to CC-BY-SA (Attribution-Share alike). Unfortunately it is not possible to change a free license with a more restrictive one, the license must remain CC-BY. Sv1xv (talk) 16:25, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since it is my photo, why I cannot change the license? Ggia (talk) 16:43, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because when you upload a file under a free license on Commons, the license is irrevocable. You may change CC-BY-SA to CC-BY (less restrictive) but not vice versa. According to COM:L#Acceptable licenses, The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable. Sv1xv (talk) 17:25, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Greece

[edit]

Hi, Great images. Probably you haven't noticed that we have many pages about villages in Drama, Xanthi, Rhodope, Evros, Kavala and others in BG:W. So when you add new images to Commons, you can also add them to the corresponding pages on the BG:W. In all these pages we give the names of the villages in Greek so you can find them easily. For example, if you have a photo from Μικρομηλιά, you just search for it and you find it in the results (if we have an article for it of course). --Chech Explorer (talk) 01:15, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes.. you cannot have 2 nominations simultaneously. But if you like you can withdraw an active nomination with template {{withdraw}} ~~~~ and add a new one. If your nomination get support 10 votes without oppose votes in 5 days it is automatically promoted as FP. If you nomination get only oppose votes or no votes (except the nominator's support vote) it get delisted from the nominations automatically after 5 days. Hi Ggia, Oh, so you had actually uploaded the photo to Commons! I am glad to see it again. It is as good as I remembered! Anyway, I understand your concern that some reviewers would oppose such a nomination due to noise. But I also think (hope) that other reviewers would see it as being outweighed by the strong value of and emotions shown on that photo. I should also say that I personally would repect both opinions, as evaluating pictures has a subjective element, which depends on the individual users personal preferences and what they emphasize in a featurable image. If you do not feel like nominating it yourself, would it be OK for you if I nominate it? Or is it so dear to you, that you do not want to drag it through mud at COM:FPC in case I am wrong concerning how it would be received (which I would also respect)? --Slaunger (talk) 07:16, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can nominate this image.. you don't have to ask ;-) - I can upload a higher resolution of this image (the image is scanned from the film negative). I will not add mud ;-) if you will nominate it. Ggia (talk) 11:37, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you could upload it in higher esolution, I would appreciate that. It will only add to the interesting discussion i foresee concerning grain and "downsampled" or not. I will then nominate the high res upload. Have a (hopefully continued) nice day. --Slaunger (talk) 11:54, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • I can upload a really high resolution of the image. My film scanner Minolta Dimage Elite 5400 can scan up 5232 x 7800 pixels - which is really high.. but the grain in the image always remains the same (it is the actual grain of the film). Ggia (talk) 12:02, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yes, I realise a hires scan will magnify the actual grain in the film (I have worked with Ilford in real darkroom too, although it is many years ago :-) ). Choose whatever resolution, which makes sense for you. 5232x7800 is perhaps overdoing it though (unless you think it add extra information). --Slaunger (talk) 12:46, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
        • Here is my restored version. I hope you do not think I have done more harm than good to it. I have only cloned and healed - no other adjustments (and I prefer it this way with no further "fiddling"). Apparently, there were fewer dust spots in your new scan, than in the first one, which made my moments of zen shorter than anticipated. --Slaunger (talk) 23:29, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
        • The EXIF of the tif did not contain any creator or camera information, whereas I noticed this was in your first jpg (so you must have some tool for editing EXIF and adding data about your film camera). Would it be possible for you to add relevant EXIF data in the version I have tried to restore? Thanks in advance. I added an approximate heading of North-East to the geocode based on my impression of the orientation of the camera from Google maps. Will you correct it, if it is wrong?--Slaunger (talk) 23:46, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
          • The new restoration is better.. thanks for the restore!! I choose x4 times scan, which is slower process in scanning.. and has higher quality. You can see in my version that I applied more masks around the image to make some parts darker than the original scan. The exif where added manually in my first jpg image.. also the gps info. I never used before the parameter NA for orientation.. I will try to add it in my next images. The GPS is correct.. Did you do some sharpening alogorithm over the image or just spot healing tool? Ggia (talk) 06:37, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Promoted! And not a single complaint about noise.
            • You're welcome! I did not apply any kind of selective sharpening or other modifications to the photo, only heal and clone tools were used. If you think the same kind of masking as you explain above will improve the restored version, feel free to modify this version as well (I do not have a strong opinion about that, only that I think the modifications should be gentle). Could you manually add the EXIF to this one as well (add yourself to the creator fields)? You mean the "heading" and not the "NA" parameter, don't you? Adding the heading parameter gives a nice directional arrow of the Commons logo on Google maps, and is one of the more useful geotagging parameters. There are plenty of more Geotagging options, some of them could be applied to your panos as well . I always use the Geolocator tool for generating the {{Location}} template including heading, range, and region with a few clicks of a mouse. Highly recommendable. Have a nice day! --Slaunger (talk) 07:32, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
            • Just a small ping - I had one last pedantic request above to add EXIF to the full-sized restored version, before nominating... Not that I am in a hurry, just in case you had overlooked my request. --Slaunger (talk) 22:05, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
              • I will do it tommorow! I just arrived back from a short break travelling to Rome, Italy.. cheers! Ggia (talk) 22:46, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
                • Welcome back. Just take your time. There is no hurry. --Slaunger (talk) 08:02, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
                  • I tried to enhance a little bit the image applying masks to several parts and changing the contrast/luminosity. I also cropped the image to keep out the black borders during the scan. In the lower left part I tried to hide (I think I succeeded) the out of focus metallic fence that was in front to the camera lens. I added EXIF info.. the date and time was a copy from a digital image I have shot there. I hope you like the changes. Ggia (talk) 00:30, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
                    • I like your subtle improvements, and I have (finally) nominated it. As a minimum I hope the nomination gives rise to some interesting discussions. For me, personally, that means more than wheather it will end in a promotion or not. But then again, I have not invested nearly as much "soul" in this as you have.... It is my impression that this photo (an related photos) also means more to you than many of your (also nice) panoramas of landscapes. Have a nice evening. --Slaunger (talk) 21:46, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad I was not the only one, who found it featurable. I am happy to see that it is possible to get a B&W modern film photo promoted (although one reviewer perceived it as historic at first). Thanks for allowing me to help a little with this one. I really enjoyed it. --Slaunger (talk) 20:26, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But nowadays shooting film looks for some people strange.. but film exists in the market and a lot of people are using it. There is an article Digital versus film photography at wikipedia trying to demonstrate the digital versus film topic. I don't find a problem when I shoot people the image to be a little bit noisy. I will not shoot a colorful landscape in a b&w film and try to upload in wikipedia, this should be shot in color. I want to mention that nowadays there are people buying cameras extremely expensive cameras/lenes (ie ~ 5.000 euros Leica M7) and choose to shoot only b&w film! BTW.. thanks for the supporting this image! Ggia (talk) 11:29, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

B&W

[edit]

Is black and white accepted at Featured Pix? Sardaka (talk) 09:36, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is accepted - there is not a limitation if the image is color or b&w. Ggia (talk) 11:37, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • In practise, most broadly accepted for historical photos, see Commons:Featured pictures/Historical for examples. For contemporary photographs it is my experience that it is quite hard to get an FP of a B&W photo, as many reviewers sees it as a setback to use a non-optimal (read non-digital, non-color) sensor. So unless there are very good reasons to go B&W and/or film, a nomination of a recent B&W pjoto is likely to be declined. --Slaunger (talk) 11:51, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Image:FeneriIsaCamiiInIstanbul20070102 1.jpg

[edit]

Hallo Ggia you are totally correct, the image is mine, and the copyright is usurped. :-) Should I do something? By the way, that image coasted me a pair of brand new shoes. Can you see the guy on the extreme left of the picture? This is an old beggar, who (after getting 3 lira from me) stole my shoes after I went into the mosque to take some pictures. It was Bayram, on January, bitter cold, I had no money, and had to walk five Km with a pair of slippers until Sultanahmed... That's why I am particularly fond of this picture. :-) Thanks, alex2006 (talk) 06:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Already some months ago I saw with wonder your pictures: let me say that you are simply a genius of photography. alex2006 (talk) 06:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Ggia,
Yes, I confirm 100%, all these pictures are mine, and paid too dear with my shoes :-). Incredible, after having printed a book with articles of mine in wikipedia, now someone usurps the copyright too... :-( Yes, Moni tou Libou is beautiful, altough I know some prettier churches in ti Poli :-) . I wrote a lot of the articles about the kilise-camiler in Istanbul, now I have only a couple left, then I must start with the mosques :-) By the way, I have a question for you as Greek: yesterday I wrote on wiki:en an article about a Greek novelist, Dido Sotiriou, and I would like to upload to Commons a picture of her which I found here. The picture appears to be more than 70 years old, but this is a Greek site. May I do it, or there will be a copyright violation issue? Thanks again, and greetings from Switzerland alex2006 (talk) 12:06, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Do you live in Alexandroupolis? I will go to the City in February, personally prefer to visit it in Winter: it has a magic atmosphere, and when it snows, it is beautiful...Bye, Alex2006 (talk) 12:52, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! Actually when I travel to the City I fly: I traveled only once by car, and I will always remember a road sign in Greece with indication "Konstantinoupolis 320 Km" and the byzantine eagle on it. It tells more than 1000 words... Maybe if we are in Istanbul at the same time me can meet there. :-) Bye, Alex2006 (talk) 07:26, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Ανακοίνωση νικητών Διαγωνισμού Επιστημονικής Φωτογραφίας 2015 στην Ελλάδα

[edit]

--Geraki TLG 19:03, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Deve tradition has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

File:20090714 Galicnik wedding poster 2009.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
