License Review Request automaticly added by Upload helper
Hi, thanks for removing the license review request: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Martes_foina-(drkb)-1.webm&diff=next&oldid=370575653. I really was wondering for what purpose or intention the upload helper added it initially.
Please note, though, that it was not added actively by me (as your edit comment insinuates). I just did not remove it, as I had no clue about the purpose it was added. To reduce the backlog, it might make more sense to review the upload helper behaviour (if not done already) than admonishing users by the way of automatically added edit comments. Thanks, --Burkhard (talk) 00:29, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- Drahkrub I changed the edit summary to "@UserNameOfuploader Removing licenseReview Template, not required for ownwork." The tool you uploaded was built to primarily import videos from external urls, that's the reason it adds the LR template. -- Eatcha (talk) 04:20, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- Not sure if you got my point - I did a quite "normal" upload (Link: "upload file"). If the there y implicitly selected tool adds the review request despite the user states "own work", than the tool needs changed or - at least - display a hint that the user to remove the review request in case of ownwork. If the edit summary template used by your bot results in a text asking the user to stop a particular "behaviour", it's neither helpful (the user did not add the request actively) nor nice/polite. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 09:38, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
- Great work! Also with edits like this! --MGA73 (talk) 08:04, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
FVC promotion template on moved file page
Hi! I don’t know how FVC promotion process works, but this edit is certainly wrong, the bot should detect if a description page is a redirect, and should not break this redirect. I restored the redirect, but haven’t removed the template yet, in the hope that the bot won’t touch the page this way even before being fixed, but I think redirects should not have this template (neither the categories) in the long run. Thanks in advance for fixing the bot! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:17, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
- Will fix it(FVCBot) before another incident, same issue with FPCBOT. Both are running the same source, with minimal changes. -- Eatcha (talk) 02:32, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- Done -- Eatcha (talk) 10:19, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the patch, but I think it would be better to use Pywikibot’s
Page.isRedirectPage()
andPage.getRedirectTarget()
methods—MediaWiki is quite relaxed about redirect syntax, for example it seems to permit zero or more whitespace character after the #REDIRECT (not only exactly one), the link can either have or not have a colon at the beginning (i.e. the escaping for normal file links instead of file inclusion), and there may be other caveats. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:52, 10 February 2020 (UTC)- Tacsipacsi Done Thanks for you suggestion. -- Eatcha (talk) 14:48, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

About FPCBot
To prevent the false alt nominations, please, read the image inside the class "wpImageAnnotatorFile" --Wilfredor (talk) 20:07, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wilfredor: Can you give a diff to an example of what you are talking about? -- KTC (talk) 22:55, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
- Its not about diff, its about how FPCBot select the images in a nomination, it take any File: how a alternative nomination in the same nomination, however, it should have a specific syntax because in that way it gives us the freedom to add comments about the nomination with the richness of images that illustrate errors or comparisons without causing problems. My suggestion is generated how resulted of this comment [4]. --Wilfredor (talk) 00:04, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wilfredor: But that doesn't solve the problem so much as make it a different one. Reading the image inside "wpImageAnnotatorFile" will stop the bot picking up any additional image as an alternative nomination sure, but actual alternative nomination don't get displayed inside "wpImageAnnotatorFile" either so the bot will also stop picking up the fact that there's alternative nominations when there are one. (pinging @Eatcha: for comments) -- KTC (talk) 22:07, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

YouTube review
Hi! The bot removed my review and added a new one in this edit. Is it a bot problem or was my review marked incorrectly? --MGA73 (talk) 19:05, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA There was a problem with the review, It lacked useful parameters + YouTubeReview should not be added by humans. The template states "This file, which was originally posted to YouTube, was reviewed on 8 February 2020 by the automatic software YouTubeReviewBot". But if everyone now wants to use it for reviewing manually the template needs to be changed(the text). It also adds the file to Category:License reviewed by YouTubeReviewBot, not true. You can use the standard LicenseReview template. -- Eatcha (talk) 05:10, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hmmm. I reviewed some still images and I used the YouTube template. I did not notice that the template said It was reviewed by the bot. --MGA73 (talk) 09:31, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA Do not remove them or add the template anywhere else, I will try to change the template to support both images and videos like Flickr. -- Eatcha (talk) 09:34, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you! That would be good. Because the blank template (Template:YouTubeReview) says "This file, which was originally posted to an external website, has not yet been reviewed by an administrator or reviewer to confirm that the above license is valid. ...". Personally I think it would be more logical that the templates work just like Flickr where both humans and bot can review. --MGA73 (talk) 09:37, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA I will add an addition parameter |bot=UserNameOfBot -- Eatcha (talk) 09:39, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi! Here is a a new edit of a file I reviewed earlier. Should I re add |reviewer=MGA73 to the file and other like it? --MGA73 (talk) 14:42, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Yes you can add it , the bot will not remove/replace the template if it has more info than my bot can/is add(ing) to it. -- Eatcha (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Perfect! Is there an easy way to find images reviewed by the bot? I guess the bot can't really tell if the image came from the video or not so a human should check all the images? --MGA73 (talk) 18:25, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- Also if the videos need to be reviewed by humans for FOP and other stuff then they should be in some sub category of license review needed? --MGA73 (talk) 18:39, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

It seems there are some youtube videos in the category. Can your bot find/review some of them? --MGA73 (talk) 10:47, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA see Special:Contributions/YouTubeReviewBot, it's my bot who's filling these up for humans. I think a bot marking files for deletion is not the best way to deal with backlog. -- Eatcha (talk) 10:53, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

EatchaBot adds defective tags to descriptions
Last night your bot added the English flag to a lot of pages, where within the description was only one word which looked like an English word. But there was no control, if the context was English. It happened to a lot of files, that the flag was wrong, like File:Hamm, Germany - panoramio (1296).jpg or File:Gold - panoramio (5).jpg. Please examine the results of the bot. --GeorgDerReisende (talk) 12:51, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
- GeorgDerReisende The primary task is to identify the language. Gold is a English world(the element). The first example is a mixture of English + German. I will increase the acceptable score (would result in less description getting tagged) but accuracy is important. There are about 10 million (human can't do this) files without language identification and I'm trying to identify the language so that we can put the into SDC caption. -- Eatcha (talk) 13:52, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Does YouTubeReviewBot review YouTube screenshots already?
EatchaBot just marked lots of YouTube screenshots with YouTubeReview, with the comment "@GRuban It's a file from YouTube, marking for YouTubeReview."; for example. That template says it will be reviewed by YouTubeReviewBot. However, User:YouTubeReviewBot implies that it does not do screenshots, yet. Which is it, please? --GRuban (talk) 15:01, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- GRuban The file was not reviewed just archived on WayBack Machine and categorized in Category:YouTube review needed. Currently Category:License review needed has more than 10K files, and it was very less likely than your fill will be ever found, my bot is trying to categorize files from Category:YouTube review needed. -- Eatcha (talk) 15:07, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Some new things on FP
Hi! Since the "FP categories" are now called "Galleries" to not confuse them with normal categories, there has been some changes to how the FP and FPC pages look as well as when you create a nomination. See this: Commons talk:Featured picture candidates#Galleries and Categories with links to the changes. This means you will have to update some of the images in your tutorial to match the new pages. Sorry about the extra work, but this will make things clearer in the future. --Cart (talk) 15:24, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wcarter Thanks for ending the chaos. I will update the images by end of tommorow. -- Eatcha (talk)
- Great! :-) --Cart (talk) 18:21, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- Wcarter What about the templates ? I am in middle of a pull request, I will add the changes in code if there are any in the template. FPC-results-ready-for-review and FPC-results-reviewed are the template that will still be confusing, if the parameters are changed without changing the bot's source the bot can not park anything. I am talking about the
|category=
parameter. If you change the template, the current version of bot will not park anything. I can run an updated version, but I don't have write access on tool-forge, so I have to run the newer version of bot from User:EatchaBot or another account that I can write into, before it gets merged after checking for bugs if any. -- Eatcha (talk) 05:09, 21 February 2020 (UTC)- I completely forgot about the templates. Good catch! My life outside Commons is very stressful right now, so I have my mind on other things, sorry. Of course it would be best to fix both the templates and the bot's code to use the word 'gallery' instead of 'category'. The closing is usually done by experienced users, so it will work for a while yet, no rush in fixing it but it should be done eventually. Can we add a commented out info or something to the template for now? Would that work? Perhaps
|category<!-- now called Gallery -->=
or something. --Cart (talk) 09:06, 21 February 2020 (UTC)- W.carter The second fix was users are no longer required to fill the template with category, it should be prefilled by the bot while closing for human review. The bot will add the category parameter (which is now called gallery parameter) .

I will ask Daniel to merge it. If it takes time, my bot will handle the candidates till he merges it and the source's get cloned on tool-forge. -- Eatcha (talk) 13:32, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- That looks great! Many thanks for your work! :-) Much appreciated and better than I hoped for. Now, I also have a question/request that has popped up from time to time from other users, but I didn't quite know to deal with. However, during a recent conversation I got a suggestion that might make things work.
- The sorting process from the 'Unsorted' section where the FPs are parked by the bot and into the right section on the page, has to be done by a human. This made total sense years ago, when sections on the pages were still being created all the time. However, now most of the sections are in place it is only rarely that new ones have to be created. So, is it possible to let the bot sort most of the FPs directly into sections, leaving only the non-sortable in the 'Unsorted' section? That would mean that for example, a nom marked
Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Objects#Lamps
- or
Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Other#France
- are sorted directly to those sections because they exist.
- But if a nom is marked just
Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Sports
- or has a section that doesn't exist yet like
Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Agriculture#Andorra
- or where the section is spelled the wrong way like
Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Plants#Family Arecaceae
- such FPs goes to 'Unsorted'.
- Is it possible to make the Bot do this, or is is a too complex operation? --Cart (talk) 16:47, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Wcarter It's not complex will implement it if I don't have anything else to do this weekend. -- Eatcha (talk) 03:44, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
- Great! If it works, it could mean a lot of less work. --Cart (talk) 11:12, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

In the diff of your changes I didn't find any obvious problem, that's why I think that the best approach for now was to revert, sorry. Best, --Poco a poco (talk) 19:17, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- It looks like the bot did all the things it's supposed to (gallery page, notify nominator, chronological, FP list, log) it is just on the template that things don't work out. Must be some small part of the code you missed. --Cart (talk) 19:32, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- Poco a pocoWcarter, I forgot about not featured cases. If you can still find errors report here. IMO it should be fixed now. -- Eatcha (talk) 03:37, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 February. It will be on all wikis from 27 February (calendar).
Future changes
- There will be a reply button after each post on a talk page if you want one. This will soon be a beta feature on the Arabic, French, Dutch and Hungarian Wikipedias. You will have to turn it on if you want to use it. It will come to more wikis later. You can test the reply button. It was briefly shown earlier than planned by mistake on the four first wikis last week.

Didn't found any external urls
Hi! Your bot "did n't found any external urls" on this image (File:Direktor Herman Knoops 50-aarsdag.jpg), but there are an external url with the template that is used for DigitaltMuseum photos. - Premeditated (talk) 07:19, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Premeditated Bot cannot detect URL hidden in a template. I will add DigitaltMuseum to block lust and remove the images that were misidentified. The bot is designed to find text that matches w:URL#Syntax in the wiki-text of file. -- Eatcha (talk) 08:45, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- Bot also marked File:Behnaz Jafari 20180422 (cropped).jpg that links to a photo on Commons. I reviewed it. Would you like me to remove the old review templates or do you want it to stay to see if the bot removes it? --MGA73 (talk) 08:23, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- If You have time to remove the template, you should remove it. The removal part of the bot is at the moment turned off. But if you don't have time to remove the template, the bot can and will remove it. -- Eatcha (talk) 08:48, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- User:MGA73 The bot's now removing the helper templates, and I am sorry about this edit. The bot should not repeat it. I will add more sites today to the supported list. -- Eatcha (talk) 05:32, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thats really Great! I think it’s a big help when bot sorts the images in categories. I reviewed a bunch yesterday where the bot found a lot of similar images. And there is 110+ pdf ready for review in another category. I just needed a second opinion from another reviewer. About the YouTube review it’s a bit messy. The script don’t support it. So it’s easier if bot have a look first to add the template. I think it’s only a problem because I reviewed it before the bot did. --MGA73 (talk) 05:56, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Why don't you run for admin-ship ? If you plan to stay active here for some time. -- Eatcha (talk) 15:14, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi! I might do that later but for now there is plenty of work to do where I don't need the extra features an admin have. But thank you for thinking of me :-) --MGA73 (talk) 16:05, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Typo in bot message
Here, I am fairly sure the bot is not meant to say "@Jo-Jo Eumerus Did n't found any external urls." as it's ungrammatical. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:07, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- J o Eumerus The new message -- Eatcha (talk) 05:31, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
- I wonder if "sobhanaachala.blogspot.com/search/label/పాత క్యాసెట్లు" could be converted to an URL without too many errors. Perhaps an idea for later use. For now I would just ignore it and let users check. It seems it is very few files that end in the category with no URL. --MGA73 (talk) 08:45, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA about 40 % files in Category:License review needed are from the Islamic Republic of Iran. I don't see any chance of clearing the backlog without reviewing all files from Iran. -- Eatcha (talk · contribs) 15:14, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Eatcha: I'm not saying we should not review files from Iran. I just think there is no reason to change bot as long as the number of files in Category:Files with no external URL source is so small (54 atm). --MGA73 (talk) 20:32, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Eatcha, thanks for reviewing my licensing! Not sure how to act here. This, like the other pictures, is a street picture taken by me. Would be enough if I add it as a work of mine? (Own) Iñaki LL (talk) 11:11, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
- Iñaki LL Don't add own work. I am not an expert in copyrights, but taking a picture of another picture is derivative work in my opinion. -- Eatcha (talk · contribs) 05:59, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- Iñaki LL I think what we need to add is the information about the original photo. Where is the original photo taken? If Spain then we need to check Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Spain. Is it possible for you to translate the text on the file (also the text written on the photo) to English? And perhaps add location if not there? When that is done I think the right template is PD-review. --MGA73 (talk) 07:45, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- I am not the author, which is not specified, but I took the pictures, and I took the pictures in the street, where they are posted permanently by the town council, they are now on the public domain. I can add the specific template of Spain for these cases, I used it in some photographs of the series when I had doubts over the historic period. My doubt is over Own or not (I do not think it is my work, since it is just an exact reproduction. Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 08:30, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- I add FYI relevant licensing templates, as posted in a few other pictures: FoP-Spaincc-zero Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 08:41, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi, We could consider changing it to "FPC-results-unreviewed", as it is easier to change to "reviewed" this way. Just as suggestion... --A.Savin 22:11, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- A.Savin Should take less than 5 minutes to make the appropriate changes, are most users(who close the nomination) in favor of a new template ? The bot also signs the template, remove the sign is unwanted work, maybe the bot should stop signing the template and the default option should be set to FPCBot on the template. -- Eatcha (talk · contribs) 03:51, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi! Someone did not like my request here: Commons:Bots/Work_requests#See_if_files_in_Category:Images_from_Pixabay_are_max_size. I wonder if it would be possible to do a work around like we do with Commons:Bots/Requests/YouTubeReviewBot? What I'm looking for is a list of files where we do not use the max res. If I had a list it should be easy to check manually to see if its just because our version is cropped or it is possible to download a bigger version. Its not as important as the license review project so if it is possible it can wait 2 months or 20 months until you have time :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:26, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- MGA Okay, you want me to do what's rejected by AntiCompositeNumber and Majora. Downloading the hi-res is not possible without creating an account. If you try to download an Image without login you get "Please register to download the high resolution images." If I create an account and start downloading, let's say I downloaded 20 images what next ? You get a message : protected by reCAPTCHA, please fill the captcha. Google captchas are impossible to fill using any publicly available automated tool. You need to make one, it's much easier to this by hand than trying to fool google's re-captcha considering the the file's are limited in numbers. Why can't I use vpn/proxy to trick re-captcha ? Cuz I need to login. Writing a smart bot for only 5000 file's not worth the hard work required. //Eatcha (talk · contribs) 04:47, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- First we keep hundreds of thousands of files and tag them with PD-art and PD-ineligible etc. and also images taken in museums even if the museums say they don't want visitors to take any photos. And if I understand it correct YouTube blocked the ip of our servers so we "cheat" and go via archive.org instead. I really can't see why that is okay but not okay to make a list of 4,600 images and compare the res on their website with the res on our website.
- Second I don't want anyone to download the images. I just wanted a list of the files. Then I can check them manually and upload the high res (I have an account) :-)
- I thought it was possible to read the res on Pixabay without logging in or to use the information stored in archive.org just like with YouTube.
- Of course it is not worth it if you need to spend hours to get it to work. Thank you for commenting :-) --MGA73 (talk) 15:14, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [7]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [8]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [9]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [10]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [11]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
-
wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage
was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [12]

EatchaBot
Edits like this performed by your bot are causing a multitude of issues. The bot needs to include the |id= parameter as it is required per YouTubeReview. Not including it not only breaks the template but causes the license reviewer script to fail. Also, by including the archive parameter it is tripping an edit filter. Every time. This is drowning out actual problematic edits that are being overrun by your bot. I mean look at the log. There are hundreds of errant hits. I can fix the abuse filter problem but the id parameter issue needs to be fixed on your end. Please do so as soon as you are able to. Thank you. --Majora (talk) 17:09, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Majora. I was aware of the edit filter issue, I even posted a line at COM:AN about it but none of them helped me or maybe commons doesn't have enough experienced edit filter edits like you , maybe including the bot group in the filter temporarily could have avoided it ? I am currently not doing that anymore, as all images( screenshots ) from YouTube uploaded before 20 Feb are archived. I don't have approval to review screenshots from YouTube just videos , if I plug something into the id parameter the template changes to reviewed state. The Id is a switch. The bot NOW only adds a separate template like here , it's automatically removed after the file's reviewed by a license reviewer. I will remove the archive parameter from all the images that don't have id parameter. Eatcha (talk · contribs) 04:00, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah...even temporarily exempting the username "EatchaBot" would have avoided all those false positives. If you aren't running that process anymore I'm not entirely sure it would be worth it to modify the filter. I understand now what you mean when you say that adding the ID results in the template being in the reviewed state. Reviewed as in by YouTubeReviewBot. Which wouldn't have been correct. Now I understand why you didn't do that as that wouldn't have been ideal. If it isn't running that process anymore I don't see why you would have to change anything on your end at all and since it is now programmed to add a separate template, even better. Thanks for all your work on the bot. --Majora (talk) 21:57, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

License review
Hi! Your bot approved a review by a non-image-reviewer user. Only admins and license-reviewers are authorized to perform reviews. Maybe the bot should check the tags for latest edits. Example: File:Eminem and Skylar Grey (2018).jpg. - Premeditated (talk) 22:20, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Premeditated: I reviewed the file again. I think we should have another system to catch files reviewed by non admins/reviewers. Either have the bot revert the review or to add a warning or category. If the bot just leaves the review helper template then I doubt anyone will notice the problem. --MGA73 (talk) 22:48, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- Premeditated, you should ask an admin to block that user. The edit filters are set to warn, they should be changed to disallowed or block. Iteration through edits of older files will take longer time. // Eatcha (talk) 02:27, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- I do agree with your though about disallowing the action, but that is not how it works now. It was only random that I choose to look into the history of the file. This could be a problem, because the bot unintentionally makes a "cover-up" for the non-image-reviewer. - Premeditated (talk) 13:01, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Why do you keep on tagging this file over and over again? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:34, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Koavf: I removed the Licensereview because we have an OTRS. Lets see if bot will leave it alone now. --MGA73 (talk) 19:04, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- MGA73 is correct, I forgot about ignoring the OTRS template in main tagging script but the removing script was designed to remove the helper if OTRS found (It generated a loop). Thanks for reporting, FIXED . //Eatcha (talk) 03:33, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
The Wayback Machine
Sometime ago the Wikimedia Commons community adopted a policy that external links should be archived (see: "Commons:Archive external links"), but so far this hasn't been implemented on all files, I saw that your bot makes edits like these in my e-mail notifications, do you think that it will be possible to archive other external links like for example the Wellcome museum? I would be nice if you could back up all external links on Wikimedia Commons like in the diff above. Is this technically possible for the EatchaBot? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:20, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
I just noticed that it only archives files from the Flickr review template, the links that remained unarchived are in the file description, Fæ actually did a trial sample, see here. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:23, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- Donald Trung I would wait for IABot, it's powered by The Internet Archive and is already running on multiple projects. Internet-Archive has supported many projects and is certainly interested in deploying it for commons but probably cp678 is busy. // Eatcha (talk) 04:14, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- (S)He has been busy for years, and from what I can tell you already have experience with archiving external links on Wikimedia Commons. Plus cp678 when requested did not want to bring what issues they're running into on Wikimedia Commons in the village pump and from what I can tell did not seem to share what code they've already written or what further hurdles they've been facing, despite Fæ already successfully running a test some time ago. The longer we'll wait the more link rot will occur, the more educational files we will lose that can't be verified. It's probably not best to let a single user monopolise something, especially not a paid editor. Or will the Internet Archive see your bot as spam because it's not trusted? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 08:16, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Donald Trung Fae's test had no web interface support (AFAIK, you can confirm it though), a web app to issue urgent taks is crucial if you are working with huge number of pages/files. I am running the Eatchabot at the max possible speed but still it's not even finished processing files starting with Integers, the bot is running 24*7 no breaks on 3.5 million files, you can imagine the time required to run a bot through all pages on commons. There are also legal concerns in archiving random URLs, unlike from a trusted site like Flickr/ YouTube/Twitter etc and may result in operators name in lawsuits. It's best if Internet Archives deals with this themselves.
- "Or will the Internet Archive see your bot as spam ..." : They generally don't block bots run by anybody if it's behaving correctly and will not take their services down. //Eatcha (talk) 18:00, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- I understand, I will try to contact the Internet Archive then. Good luck with the whole Flickr, YouTube, and Vimeo thing, I greatly appreciate it. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:39, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Changing tagging setting of FPCBot
Hi Eatcha.
Currently, FPCBot adds the assessments template under the information template (as far as I know). I think this needs a minor change, especially for cases like File:Koala in Zoo Duisburg.jpg (notice the Location template being separated from the Information template). I think it should be like File:The Earth seen from Apollo 17.jpg; it should add Assessment as the title of a new section below the information section and use Assessments in that section. Is it possible to change the setting this way?
Thanks. Ahmadtalk 16:25, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Ahmad The issue with the location template was fixed about a week ago, https://github.com/Zitrax/FPCBot/blob/master/fpc.py#L755 (example edit) the bot now checks before adding the template. The section thing is controversial, there are users who complains that the section pushes down the license information( these types of users only cares about attribution in other websites, they can't live if the license information is not visible on the visible section of screen without scrolling down) and those who think adding the assessment at the bottom is unfair(these types of users have many FPs/QIs). I am not taking names to avoid conflict. There's also issue with the qicbot and vicbot, the developer is no longer active and the bots will keep placing the template at the bottom without caring about the section. I had this idea when I started working on adding POTD/MOTD templates, but I chose to avoid working on it due to the possibility of disagreement. //Eatcha (talk) 17:38, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. I didn't notice this recent change (I was deciding which pictures to vote for in POTY, and I saw a couple of files having this problem). Hmmm... fair enough. The thing is that if the Quality image template is in the page, there will be a gap between the Assessments template and QI, and I know for a fact that merging QI into assessments is also controversial. Maybe the best course of action is to let it be the way it is. Ahmadtalk 18:28, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
What do I do with pages like User:EatchaBot/Files-requiring-license-review-gallery-uploaded-by/Flor WMCH?

Requests for autopatrol
Please screen users before nominating them for autopatrol. A lot have been inactive, or have problematic block logs that suggest a deeper look is needed than just edit count and age. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 05:31, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
- DannyS I check for current global blocks and current local blocks on commons. I will add last edit check before nominating more users but I expect about 500 more users should be nominated to handle the patrol backlog. I assume around 80% of them will be promoted. Admins will check the logs no matter what I do. //Eatcha (talk) 05:48, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

- DannyS I will check last 50, slowing down doesn't makes sense considering the harm uncontrolled edits are causing to the projects and giving user rights to trusted users will encourage them. You are not to add 500 more nominations to the request for rights page. In fact you are hereby restricted from adding any more nominations to that page until the current backlog is dealt with. My internet can barely keep up with the sheer number of sections on that page and your threat, and yes I take that as a threat, to add 500 more is totally and completely unacceptable. After the backlog is dealt with you are welcome to add more. However, you are not to add nominations via script. That is an unapproved bot like process in violation of COM:Bots. Saying that you are going to nominate 500 more and you expect 80% to be accepted still leave 100 denials. Whatever you are doing is far too broad. If you cannot abide by these restrictions I will block you from editing COM:RFR entirely. --Majora (talk) 11:37, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

My two cents for you
When in doubt, ask. Much of the conflicts could have been avoided. You would value your work far more if you had done it than if you had not, and if it causes issues the they would have already been done. On the technical side, it's often harder to fundamentally / architecturally change a piece of code than to just rewrite it from scratch. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:30, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Some development will be slower than planned. This is because of the current pandemic. You can see the new deployment guidelines. This is to avoid risks when some persons could be unavailable.
- There was a problem when adding interwiki links. The tool you use to add interwiki links could suggest the wrong project to link to. This has now been fixed. [20][21]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 24 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 25 March. It will be on all wikis from 26 March (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a project to make editing easier for newcomers. The developers are trying to understand what initiatives different Wikipedias have to welcome newcomers. They also want to know which templates are often used for maintenance activities. You can help this project by checking if your wiki's pages are listed on Wikidata.

- Janbery Thank you for reporting this issue and helping to improve EatchaBot. Examining the information you have given us, it's primarily because I wanted the bot to add the MOTD template just below the information template and it's pretty rare for videos on commons to have location templates. Hi Eatcha, thanks for improving the project. Just for information, I had to fix a small problem here after Eatchabot changed the code. - Thanks for reporting, I reverted the change. This is just a one time run and would never be repeated again ever. FPCBot closing delist nomination early
I noticed that FPCBot incorrectly closed Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Reflections of Earth 9.jpg because it had no supports (obviously). I believe delist nominations are not subject to early closure (and even if they were, this one shouldn't have been closed early as there is opposition). I have partially blocked the bot from editing that one specific page. In the meantime, can you fix the bug? Thanks, King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 06:38, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- King of Hearts Are you aware that the bot never closed/parked any deleting candidate since this (29 May 2013) edit. Technically there's nothing on the delist page because it's just a redirect and the delist candidates are treated as FPC candidates because they are on the FPC candidates page. IIRC, I had asked A.Savin about it but he doesn't remember the exact reason for the redirect.

User:Deletion Notification Bot delivers broken deletion messages
Hi Eatcha, in case of mass deletion requests, your bot creates a flood of individual messages, all broken like this one which do not link correctly to the DR. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:22, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

- Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [62]
- Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them.
<b/>
is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work.area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr
can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect<references />
or
. [63] - There is a banner called
WikidataPageBanner
. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions onMediaWiki:Sitenotice
so that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [64][65]

User Research - Looking for volunteers
Hello @Eatcha:
I write to you, because you have been very active on Commons in the past, even if you state now that you are semi-retired. Especcially because you said on your userpage, that you wanted to take a break from Wikipedia and ended up on Commons, your input would be very important for us. So I just hope, that you this this :)
For a current research project we are looking for active community members in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons who are interested in filling out a survey and participating in an interview. The aim of the research is to identify opportunities for participation and access for new volunteers in the Wikimedia projects. For this purpose we would like to learn from the experiences of the already active community members and find out success factors for participation in the projects. Participation includes filling out a preliminary survey, a self-study and an interview.
If you are interested in participating, simply fill out this survey. The participants in the interviews will be selected on the basis of the answers in order to be able to consider as many different perspectives as possible.
All selected interview partners will receive a book or photo voucher of 25 euros as a thank you.
Feel free to forward this call to other people you think might share interesting experiences about Commons. If you have any questions you can of course contact me or check the project page :) On the Project Page you can also find more information.

Allow uploading of MP4 files
Hi! You made a good suggestion for videos and the result was clear but per Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2019/11#Wrap_up_the_proposal someone need to do something. Before I ask around I would like to hear if you know anything about the status. --MGA73 (talk) 10:29, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

- Does your concern about the legal aspect not apply for both option 1 and 2? (Can WMF legally host mp4?) --MGA73 (talk) 06:52, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
- MGA Both both option 1 and 2 are illegal, it's illegal to run an unauthorized transcoder and also hosting MP4 files(H.264). Why V2C is running an illegal trans-coder ? It's community managed tool, WMF is not directly responsible for it. But "On August 26, 2010, MPEG LA announced that royalties won't be charged for H.264(patent expiring in 2027) encoded Internet video that is free to end-users." maybe it's legal for Wikimedia commons. "Can WMF legally host mp4?" , best answered by the WMF legal staff. // Eatcha (talk) 03:08, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- Yes I agree legal should answer that question. I will see if I can find someone to ask. --MGA73 (talk) 07:06, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- I have now sent an email to someone from Legal now and will inform you about their reply. Thanks a lot for bringing up the suggestion! --MGA73 (talk) 07:43, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Archiving eBay urls with EatchaBot
Hi! I've happily noted EatchaBot archiving flickr sources, and I was wondering if that could be extended to eBay sources as well. eBay links usually 404 starting 90 days after a listing ends, so link rot is guaranteed to happen without archiving. The rate is fairly low - Commons currently has only ~4500 images from eBay, and the maximum per day is probably a couple dozen if I go on an upload binge. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:23, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

- The first time I noticed it was when I got pinged on the Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:St. Venantius, Wertheim, Nave 20160802 1.jpg. But then again, I've been busy IRL these past months so I didn't pay much attention to things like that. From what I can see, it closes fifth-day 'not featured', it's just the featured that is lagging. Thanks anyway for fixing the gallery bug. That was the most urgent item. People usually yell at someone ( me) when their noms aren't closed in time, so we can do that manually if it keeps happening. I'll try to keep a logg on it and get back to you in a month or so if it hasn't improved. --Cart (talk) 15:45, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- Update: It seems it actually did close one fifth-day today [84]. Perhaps your prodding it helped. ;) --Cart (talk) 15:48, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

File:DAL Love Field.svg - from where?
Thanks to your wonderful bot, I'm able to go through Category:Files_requiring_license_review_sorted_by_user_name and license review one user at a time. Naturally I decided to go to User:EatchaBot/Files-requiring-license-review-gallery-uploaded-by/Eatcha early. However, the only file there, this one, is hard to review, since source is listed as https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/digital_products/dtpp/search/results/?cycle=1702&ident=dal which is a list of 89 different PDFs, with inscrutable titles, and no clue which of those this particular image might have come from. Could you please be a bit more specific? Thanks. --GRuban (talk) 23:40, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- GRuban The files was vectorized by me from File:DAL Love Field.pdf which was uploaded on 3 September 2014 on Wikipedia. I checked all the links on the source page and it appears that the file is no longer available on FAA's website(404 - File or directory not found). Should I open a DR for both the files ? And thanks for taking the time to review my uploads. // Eatcha (talk) 04:55, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- No, I wouldn't. The claim is that it was made by the federal government, which seems quite likely. We accept lots of files on the uploader's say-so that they took the photo themselves, license review is, as Commons:License review says " to check whether an image currently marked as non-free was uploaded under a free license" in case that free license is ever removed, which does happen, but the federal government can not remove their license. Plenty of our files are never license reviewed, that doesn't mean they should automatically be deleted. --GRuban (talk) 14:03, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- The Score extension has been disabled for now. This is because of a security issue. It will work again as soon as the security issue has been fixed. [85]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 July. It will be on all wikis from 9 July (calendar).
Future changes
- Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project. It will collect language-independent information that can be easily read in different languages. It builds on Wikidata. The name is preliminary. You can read more. [86]
- The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
- Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

Deletion Notification Bot
Your bot is apparently substituting notification templates, rather than using the standard system of using the templates as designed, and as every other tool uses them. Could you please stop unnecessary substitutions, this leaves large amounts of haphazard format and style tags in the wiki text and becomes impossible for other tools to navigate. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 13:13, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Deletion Notification Bot (2)
Hi, I have had 2 notifications for redirects that were nominated for deletion. See the history of my talk page. I am a file mover, and those redirects were automatically created after a file move. As file mover I don't need to be informed about these nominations. I don't know if this can be fixed or not. I haven't had any problem with this before abd it happened twice now, so I think something has changed. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 14:08, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Representing Polynomials in Python Using Numpy.webm
Copyright status: File:Representing Polynomials in Python Using Numpy.webm
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Representing Polynomials in Python Using Numpy.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Recent changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. The mobile main page special casing stopped working 14 July. 60 wikis now have main pages that don't work well on mobile. You can see which ones, how to fix it and how to get help in Phabricator. This is the same problem that was reported in Tech News 2020/24 and 2020/26.
Problems
- There is a problem with the interlanguage links. The interlanguage links are the links that help you find a specific page in a different language. The sorting is broken. The developers are working on a solution. [87]
- Some users keep getting the notifications for the same event. Some of these are old events. [88]
- Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [89]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 July. It will be on all wikis from 23 July (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a
Printable version
link. This will disappear. That is because web browsers today can create a printable version or show how it will look in print anyway. [90]

Recent changes
- The Starter kit is now available for wiki communities. This page lists technical resources, tools, and recommendations. These are essential to operate a wiki project. This is mostly useful for smaller wikis where the community has limited experience with this. [91]
- The first features of the Desktop Improvements project are available for logged-in users on all wikis. In order to use them, uncheck Use Legacy Vector in your local or global preferences in section Skin preferences. More improvements are planned. Feedback is welcome.
- On multiple wikis, a UTCLiveClock gadget is available. For wikis that import the gadget directly from mediawiki.org, end users can now choose a different timezone to show instead of UTC.
Problems
- The deployment train for MediaWiki has been blocked this week. [92][93]
- Translation Notification Bot was sending the same message multiple times to every translator. This has been fixed. [94]
- Some users were receiving the same notification multiple times. This has been fixed. [95]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from July 28. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from July 29. It will be on all wikis from JUly 30 (calendar).

Problems
- All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [96]
- Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [97]
- There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [98]
- A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [99]
Changes later this week
- The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [100]
- Users'
global.js
andglobal.css
pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [101] - In the MonoBook skin, the
searchGoButton
identifier is nowsearchButton
. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27. - Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses
counter
to prevent large archives was changed. [102] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 5. It will be on all wikis from August 6 (calendar).

Recent changes
- FileImporter and FileExporter became standard features on all Wikis during the first week of August. They help you transfer files from local wikis to Wikimedia Commons with the original file information and history intact. [103]
Problems
- The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [104]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 12. It will be on all wikis from August 13 (calendar).
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on September 1. This is planned between 13:30 and 15:30 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [105][106]

Recent changes
- If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an
undo
tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [107] - The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [108]

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2020 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Ukraine

Changes later this week
- Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [113]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
- All MediaWiki API modules will now use
watchlist
instead ofwatch
. This was inconsistent before. [114]
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
- OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [115]
- The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [116][117]
- Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
- Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a
.menu
class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can usenav ul
instead..vectorTabs
and.vectorMenu
will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2020 в Україні: залишилося два тижні! / Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Ukraine: two weeks are left!

Recent changes
- There is a new tag for reverted edits. For example you can see it in the recent changes feed or in the article history. It is added to edits when they have been undone, rollbacked or manually reverted to an older version of the page. [120][121]
Changes later this week
- The number of times you can do something in a period of time on wiki is limited. This could be the number of edits per minute or the number of users you email in a day. Some users are not affected by all limits because of their user rights. They could soon see the limit even if it does not affect them. [122]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 September. It will be on all wikis from 24 September (calendar).

Recent changes
- Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [123]
- Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [124]
Problems
- Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [125]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
- The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
- In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see
Apps
as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [126] - You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
- You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

Recent changes
- There is a new tool where you can see which home wiki users have in discussions on Meta. This can help show which communities are not part of the discussion on wikis where we make decisions that affect many other wikis.
- You can now thank users for file uploads or for changing the language of a page. [127]
Problems
- There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [128]
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [129]
- Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
- Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in
Children
is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [130]
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [131]

Problems
- Because of the problems with the MediaWiki version two weeks ago last week's updates are also late. [132][133][134]
Changes later this week
- Live previews didn't show the templates used in the preview if you just edited a section. This has now been fixed. You can also test CSS and JavaScript pages even if you have the live preview enabled. Previously this didn't work well. [135][136]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 October. It will be on all wikis from 15 October (calendar).

Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [138]
- In the AbuseFilter extension, the
rmspecials()
function will be updated soon so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses ofrmspecials()
withrmwhitespace()
wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [139] - Some gadgets and user-scripts use the HTML div with the ID
#jump-to-nav
. This div will be removed soon. Maintainers should replace these uses with either#siteSub
or#mw-content-text
. A list of affected scripts is at the top of phab:T265373.

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Since the introduction of the interface administrators user group in 2018, administrators couldn’t view the deleted history of CSS/JS pages. Now they can. [142]
- There was a problem with the Change Tags. The software would apply the "Reverted" tag to any page actions such as page-protection changes if they came directly after a reverted edit. This has now been fixed for new edits. [143]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias in November. Another announcement will be made once the date is finalized. [144]

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [145]
- There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the
formatnum
parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g.
. Note that
is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [146]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
- Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [147]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. You can read the help page and the troubleshooting guide for more information. [148]
Future changes
- A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of
formatnum
when it is given a negative argument. [149] - In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

- You can see reference previews. This shows a preview of the footnote when you hover over it. This has been a beta feature. It will move out of beta and be enabled by default. There will be an option not to use it. The developers are looking for small or medium-sized wikis to be the first ones. You can let them know if your wiki is interested. [150]
- From November 16 the categories will not be sorted in order for a short time. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the internationalisation library. They will use a script to fix the existing categories. This can take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [151][152]

This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [153][154]

- The Wiki Replicas can be used for SQL queries. You can use Quarry, PAWS or other ways to do this. To make the Wiki Replicas stable there will be two changes. Cross-database

- @Llywelyn are all files on Welsh Government's channel UCqLR2NQK4a7P6dwsn02srng compatible with Wikimedia Commons licensing policy? If yes, should I add the channel-ID (UCqLR2NQK4a7P6dwsn02srng) to User:YouTubeReviewBot/Trusted? Adding to trusted page will make the bot pass the review even if videos aren't explicitly marked "creative commons" on YouTube. -- Eatcha (talk) 06:26, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 11 January 2021.
Recent changes
- The
citation needed
template shows when a statement in a Wikipedia article needs a source. If you click on it when you edit with the visual editor there is a popup that explains this. Now it can also show the reason and when it was added. [166]
Changes later this week

Future changes
- You can propose and discuss what technical improvements should be done for geographic information. This could be coordinates, maps or other related things.
- Some wikis use LanguageConverter to switch between writing systems or variants of a language. This can only be done for the entire page. There will be a
<langconvert>
tag that can convert a piece of text on a page. [167] - Oversighters and stewards can hide entries in Special:AbuseLog. They can soon hide multiple entries at once using checkboxes. This works like hiding normal edits. It will happen in early January. [168]

Hi. Please adjust the bot to respect D so that edits like this by CptViraj are no longer necessary. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:50, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. The bot can recognize the D template. See regex101.com/r/4nI9Zc/1. The relevant line is at github.com/eatcha-wikimedia/commons-rfr-archive-bot/blob/master/main.py. The nomination was full of exceptions. The regex generator is designed to generate regexen that doesn't look beyond one "newline/EOL character" for candidate text. The issue can be avoided if users don't use more than one EOL for comments. I can not increase EOL lookahead limit because I want to avoid accidental defacing of the RFR page by my bot, not handling some candidates is less disgraceful. -- Eatcha (talk) 14:34, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
