Hello, Danmichaelo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. -- Rillke(q?) 20:13, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Folkelivsbilleder

You see, the reason I didn't use no directly is because you can't use user boxes-with-parameters with the Babel extension, which I'm trying to stick to (perhaps I have to leave it eventually, but that's a pity, since it provides clean syntax). – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:19, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oslobilder

[edit]

Hei!

– Danmichaelo (δ) 00:31, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 08:44, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Funker veldig bra!--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 08:59, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 13:08, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ble nesten flau her nå.
– Danmichaelo (δ) 13:39, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jeg er veldig fornøyd med dette verktøyet. Kanskje du bør fortelle om det på Tinget her + på Torget på Wikipedia slik at flere kan bruke det? Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 10:54, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dig.Mus.

[edit]

Hei.

When to use the PD-Art tag).
Jeg har opprettet kategorien Category:Media from the collection of Larvik Museum. Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 10:07, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lagt inn med autokategorisering i Category:Media from the collection of Larvik Museum. – Danmichaelo (δ) 12:20, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ler...ja. Takk skal du ha for fiksing. Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 19:34, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hei! Kunne du sette inn SKU for Saviomuseet også? Jeg har opprettet kategorien Media from the collection of Saviomuseet Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 20:17, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea to create an alternate but it also fails. first it can't read the '_' (underscores) in image names and after cropping, doesn't upload to commons, i get "Upload failed!"...sorry..--Stemoc (talk) 04:35, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, I should have added a warning since it's not really expected to work yet :) While I think the code is mostly complete, I ran out of time at some point. I'll see if I can wrap it up this weekend and let you know. – Danmichaelo (δ) 09:20, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Stemoc, feel free to try the tool now. I've done some updates and added OAuth. Note that I've updated the code at CropTool – seems like the trailing slash in the url is important. – Danmichaelo (δ) 21:57, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Currently, I do not need to crop anything cause i mainly crop pics i upload via flickr and since they updated flickr, finding the right licenced image is pretty much close to impossible..but thanks, may try it in the near future..--Stemoc (talk) 01:05, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After using it for the last 2 months, I give it a BIG THUMBS UP..the best feature is allowing the user to upload it instead of the bot doing it, wish cropbot had that feature, hard to keep tags of images I "manipulated"...now if you can come up with a bot that can do a similar thing as the Magnus flickr bot by uploading files directly from flickr (instead of it being done by a bot), that would be awesome :D ..--Stemoc (talk) 05:29, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

– Danmichaelo (δ) 16:10, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About CropTool

[edit]

Great!

As soon as you'll expand the tool for .jpg images coming from multipage djvu/pdf files .... such a tool will be extremely useful for wikisource projects! I can't wait for this - please post any notice about into wikisource-l too.

Into it.source, we recently developed a temporary tool doing a "pseudo-cropping" of page images, it allows to show into a box part of the page image (as a jpg thumb from djvu file) optuionally resized. It comes form an idea of George Orwell III into en.source: en:s:Template:FreedImg. Our it.source tool saves exact coordinates of area to be cropped into the page into the parameter of a template, so that perhaps the conversion pseudo-cropping->real cropping could be highly automatized. Take a look to gadget "Ritaglio immagini" into it.source and to related it:s:Template:Ritaglio. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 16:18, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you like it! The pseudocropping is an interesting approach, it probably allows for doing cropping work much faster than with my tool. And as such, I'm not sure if you would really benefit from my tool? Also, I have no idea of how to work with multi page files.. Having a bot doing automated hard cropping based on the coordinates, however, sound like a cool thing to do, and very much possible, but that's an entirely different project (I hardly think any code from CropTool could be used in it). – Danmichaelo (δ) 15:53, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you like to do some test, we are just working on book with good images: File:Avventure di Robinson Crusoe.djvu where pseudo-cropping has been largely used. Now, the file is a djvu but usable images are jpg obviously: this from page 715. I guess I can't help you abouts scripts, I'm a very rough and layman "programmer", but I guess that it would not be impossibile to crop jpg thumbs with your tool. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:48, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:DigitaltMuseum

[edit]

– Danmichaelo (δ) 14:38, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Takk for hjelpen. - mvh 4ing (talk) 09:49, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oi, hvordan kom du over thing=bilde egentlig?

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Restored UKBot files

[edit]

Hi Danmichaelo, by request I restored [4] some files on Commons which UKBot uploaded for the fi.wp weekly competition. Those were deleted because no license was specified on the description page. Am I right to assume that the images are PD just like the bot's more recent uploads for the same project? Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 00:51, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jafeluv: Yes, that's correct. – Danmichaelo (δ) 17:38, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Personality rights template

[edit]

Thank you for helping translating Template:Personality_rights/i18n last month. The template was (again) updated recently. Could you please help us again with updating the translation? You can find the version before the update in an older version of the translated page. whym (talk) 11:21, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, thanks for notifying me. – Danmichaelo (δ) 18:07, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Technical Barnstar
Thank you so much for creating CropTool. It is an absolutely wonderful tool that I have recently put to good work improving some of my uploads to Commons. I absolutely love how easy it is to use, and Commons is much richer because of it. Thanks again! Michael Barera (talk) 23:14, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PS: If anyone else substantially contributed to the creation of the tool, please let me know so I can thank them as well. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 23:16, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words, Michael :) – Danmichaelo (δ) 20:25, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

SVG version of Archimedes lever

[edit]

Hi -- I thought you might be interested to know that I converted your scan of the Archimedes woodcut into vector format: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Archimedes_lever,_vector_format.svg . I think the vector version "pops" better, and will look good when printed at high resolution. Regards --Bcrowell (talk) 19:02, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bcrowell, that's brilliant! I added a Vector version available to the png version. – Danmichaelo (δ) 20:28, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Croptool

[edit]

Hei Dan Michael! Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 17:02, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 06:44, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Man montage

[edit]

I notice that the grid with pictures of men on the page Man contains no pictures of transgender men, which could be taken to bolster the incorrect idea that such men are not "real" men. I also see that the grid contains a picture of Vitruvian Man which is also shown in the body of the article. Does it need to be shown twice? I thought it could be replaced with a picture of a transgender man. I would suggest Chaz Bono but I am open to other suggestions. I know the grid can't contain examples of every type of man, but I think an example of a transgender man is especially important because some deny such men are men at all, and we don't want to seem to be in favor of that idea. I suggested this on the talk page for Man and got no objections. I can't change the grid myself because I don't know how, so would you mind doing it? Thank you.

Seems reasonable! There you go: File:Men montage 2.jpg. I've also commented on the discussion page at enwp. – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:05, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You broke Croptool

[edit]

Your recent update forces users to the "Authorization required " window when trying to crop images even though the tool has been given authorization already and repeatedly ....--Stemoc (talk) 00:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Stemoc: But it works after you re-authorized, right? Re-authorization was needed because the scope of the tool was extended from Commons to all Wikimedia projects. – Danmichaelo (δ) 09:45, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thats the problem, i have repeatedly authorized it, its just not going to the crop page..it keeps telling me "Authorization required " even though i have repeatedly given it authorization and it appears in my "Managed Apps" section ...here is the web console log for the problem, hope u can make heads or tails out of this..--Stemoc (talk) 12:29, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm forced to manually remove cookies for wmflabs everytime i try to crop an image. it probably does not like firefox browser..the mwkey and mwsecret keys ..the problem maybe "Send For" as the other tools use on wmflabs use "Any type of connection" and your tool uses "Encrypted connections only" --Stemoc (talk) 15:22, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: Thanks for providing more info. You're right that it's probably related to the cookies. Authorization is stored in those cookies, meaning you should in general only have to re-authorize whenever you loose the cookies, or whenever you use a new browser or computer. I'm still a bit confused. I've tested with Firefox, and it works for me. You do use the tool with https, right? I noticed that the automatic redirect from http to https does not work now. And do you have to re-authorize each time you want to crop a file, or each time you restart the browser? And this began after the update? – Danmichaelo (δ) 15:40, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Btw. I fixed a http→https redirect now. It's quite important since the cookies are not available unless you use https. – Danmichaelo (δ) 15:45, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Its working now, thanks..I love the tool, probably the only one who uses it the most :P --Stemoc 01:29, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: Great to hear, also that you love the tool :) – Danmichaelo (δ) 15:06, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, Croptool appears to be broken again. Specifically, it turns up an error when you try to go to the authorization page. G S Palmer (talk) 15:50, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@G S Palmer: Thanks for notifying me! There had been a change in the OAuth service I was not aware of. Authorization should work again now.. – Danmichaelo (δ) 23:28, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, working fine. G S Palmer (talk) 14:40, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan. This tool's been broken for me for a while, and seems to be due to this OAth issue - it just keeps kicking me back to the authorisation page after clicking Connect. I can't remember if I've ever had it working using OAuth, but I've definitely had other tools work that use it. I've tried deleting cookies, and checking/unchecking in Gadgets. I'm using chrome, and it all appears to be using https throughout the sequence. Any suggestions? It's a great tool btw, I can't imagine going back to the manual method now. I do have one suggestion though - is it possible to add Template:Image extracted to the donor file? Ultra7 (talk) 18:57, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ultra7 The tool's been using OAuth right since it launched, but you're perhaps refering to CropBot, which the tool is inspired by? Anyways, thanks for letting me know about the problem. I'm not really sure where to start looking though. If you go to Special:OAuthManageMyGrants, do you see CropTool listed? Version 1.2? If you see it listed, you could try to recall it, although I don't really expect that to help.. – Danmichaelo (δ) 19:08, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, definitely CropTool. It was listed as 1.2, I removed and re-authorised, but no change. It definitely stopped working for me about a month ago - I didn't do anything about it at the time as I thought it would be back up later, and I wasn't needing to do much cropping at the time. Ultra7 (talk) 21:01, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan, seems like the same bug, asks for authorization everytime i try to use it..i use the tool on https but i use wikimedia on http, can you fix it again please?..I'm your biggest (non-paying :P) client :P--Stemoc 00:39, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Stemoc Sorry I missed your message. I didn't even know it was possible to use Commons without https while logged in, did you configure that somewhere? Does it work if you use Commons with https? I'm not really sure where to start looking for the problem yet, so any hints be welcome. – Danmichaelo (δ) 23:17, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I use commons without https since forever.. :P btw, it seems the problem was related to a failure in the OAuth extension and not just your tool, it was fixed within day of my comment ..sorry :)--Stemoc 01:01, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I just tried again for the first time in ages, and it's still not working for me (yet I can still use other tools, I authorised the Flickr upload tool only yesterday). It definitely doesn't let me even try to use http, it simply redirects to https (I suppose that's the whole point of OAuth). Is it possible for me to try the version of the code before you expanded it to all wikis - just to confirm whether or not that's the change which broke it for me? Ultra7 (talk) 15:17, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ultra7 Not in a simple way that won't break the tool for others.. I'm planning to add more logging though, so I have a better chance to investigate problems – right now I don't have a clue if this is a problem that affects many people or not. The only thing I know is that the tool works for many people. One thing I'm curious about is if you do get the cookies or not. If possible, could you check if you have "mwKey" and "mwSecret" under Resources > Cookies in Developer Tools? – Danmichaelo (δ) 00:02, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. Inspecting it while on an image page, i.e. commons.wikimedia.org, I don't have either of those. I do have centralauth_Token and centralauth_User, but I suspect that's from the TUSC era? The others look pretty standard fare, and I do have forceHTTPS, which explains the inability to use http. Ultra7 (talk) 00:12, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Croptool down..

[edit]

Can you restart it please? :( ..--Stemoc 00:51, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late response. There's been quite some down time on Tool Labs in the recent weeks, but luckily it seems like CropTool at least manages to start by itself whenever the server starts working again. – Danmichaelo (δ) 12:31, 12 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Crop tool & multipage files

[edit]

Thanks Dan for your work! I pinged you at it:s:Wikisource:bar but I don't know if you'll get the ping. Here my first run of CropTool on a djvu file: File:Piccolo Mondo Antico (Fogazzaro) (page 7 crop).jpg; it is a poor, but necessary, image. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:40, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! Btw. is background removal something you think could be automated? Using ImageMagick, I would guess that a white fuzzy opaque fill would be the way to go, perhaps with a conctrast-stretch to make the black more black first. But I'm not sure if the level of fuzziness would have to be varied from image to image. How is your current procedure for doing it? – Danmichaelo (δ) 20:25, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look if you like at my account, User:Alex brollo, you'll find some hundreds of uploadings of images extracted from books in the last few weeks... I used a very similar convention for naming them .... Well, your tool saves lots of time, since the most annoying work is, to complile metadata, links, categories. I usually work with XnView and needed steps are:
  1. crop the image (usually a TIFF by ddjvu.exe);
  2. rotate a litle bit when needed (a lot of times)
  3. convert in into gray-scale
  4. adjust it editing its levels ("blanking" pale gray areas)
  5. convert into .jpg or .png and upload it into Commons
As you see from first uploads I feel comfortable to upload the raw crop, then to download it, to edit it (by XnView), and to re-upload it. It's fast and effective. Sure, it will be great to work inside the tool into a canvas, but the tool is already great! Would you like some more suggestion coming from many tests I'm going to perform? The first one is to add an input field into Crop Tool accepting the page number. Wikisourcers often review many pages of the same book into the same edit session, the smartest ones will discover fastly that it's very simple to upload a different page of the same book just editing the page number into the tool URL :-) but an input field will help. About Gadget-CropTool.js, I uploaded into it.source a slightly different version, i.e.:
  1. the script has been customed to work from nsPage only and gets the full name of page from context;
  2. an attribute target="_blank" has been added to the link code, so that the tool opens into a different tab from the calling page. Here the code: it.source CropTool.js gadget.
In brief: it.source (and other source projects I guess) was waiting for your tool... from years, thanks again!--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:30, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great to hear! An input field for selecting page (or a dropdown like on Commons) should be really easy to add, and something I also had in mind, so that will definitely come. Feel free to let me know if you have other ideas for improvement. – Danmichaelo (δ) 18:32, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A (challenging) proposal for CropTool enhancing

[edit]

Do you know as Internet Archive works with texts, how it is used as one of best free djvu/pdf sources for wikisource work, and details of the rich archive of different derived files that are stored into any IA item? In brief, there's one high-definition image for any pdf / djvu page of IA books, while both djvu and pdf images are highly compressed; and they can be downloaded and cropped manually; but ask me more if you want only if you are really interested about, it's an hard issue. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 10:09, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Let's discuss how the process could work. Would this be for djvu/pdf files that have already been transferred to Commons (I guess they have a link back to archive.org), or files that only live on archive.org? In the latter case, I guess a user would just paste the URL from archive.org into CropTool and work from there.. Does the URLs from archive.org include page numbers? – Danmichaelo (δ) 11:58, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Things are a little bit more complex - high resolution images of pages are stored as jp2 files, into a zip. A dynamic request to the right IA server builds a jpg image from jp2, then sent it. I.e of a IA url, giving back a high resolution jpg:
Aas you see the needed url is a call to a php script - not a static url; and it is wrapped into a very complex, multi-server url.  :-( --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 13:39, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Given the IA item (LingenosoIdalgoDon_chisciotteDellaManciaVol.2), it seems like you can get the rest (server, dir) from the metadata api: https://archive.org/metadata/LingenosoIdalgoDon_chisciotteDellaManciaVol.2 . What confuses me about this file though is that the 64 MB pdf file is marked as "original", while the 843 MB jp2.zip is "derivative". Any idea why? – Danmichaelo (δ) 18:57, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. IA items are uploaded by contributors as pdf files or as zipped images; those uploads are the "original" files. Both are normalized and somehow deskewed by the powerful server of IA getting "derivative" _jp2 images; these are the source for any following elaboration (OCR, pdf, djvu....). Djvu is presently derived but it is not published; it is used to extract text and _djvu.xml, the latter contains "word mapping", t.i. coordinates of words into page image. I presume that IA book viewer uses _jp2 images + _djvu.xml to highlight searched words. _jp2 images are "omologous" to images wrapped into djvu or pdf files, so that coordinates of images into _jp2 can be exactly derived from jpg images coming from djvu/pdf IA files. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 08:48, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another (easy) proposal for CropTool

[edit]

Most wikisource users of CropTool (two from three I presume by now.... ;-).... did you get some more feedback?) feel the need to one more input field to add one or more category names (it would great to use commonist convention, t.i., if I remember right, names of categories separated by a | character).

Perhaps, the best could be to have a preview of full description text that is going to be uploaded by CropTool, just as IA upload bot does, allowing users to add/to edit all what they need.

PS: Thanks for the drop-down field for page numbers!--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:24, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Alex brollo: Right, a full description editor is easy to add, but where should it be placed in the user interface? (without making it too clumsy and crowded :)) Let me know if you have suggestions. A category field is easier to fit in, I guess. It's also possible I could get HotCat to work. Btw. I've added a GitHub issue on this as well. – Danmichaelo (δ) 20:48, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Consider that wikisourcians probably will be the main users of the tool, and that they are not confused by crowded textareas :-) Could it be hidden into a collapsed field? But really, a field for categories might be sufficient; the best would be if added categories could be "remembered" while uploading different pages of the same book.--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 21:11, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think a collapsed field could work. But I'm not sure if a single category field could be more efficient to work with sometimes? In any case I'll experiment a little with this, but it probably won't be in the next couple of weeks since I need to prioritize other projects for some time now. – Danmichaelo (δ) 21:26, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. There's no hurry, the tool as it is now allows a tenfold increase in speed and consistency of uploads... :-) I added a "CropTool calling gadget" into la.source too. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 17:01, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DigitaltMuseum: DEXTRA Photo

Se for eksepmel File:Eldfisk_oljeplatform_(DEX_KF_000632).jpg, der bildelenken bare fører til DigitaltMuseums forside. - 4ing (talk) 07:17, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

- 4ing (talk) 09:30, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wishlist 2016

[edit]

Hi Danmichaelo, I took the liberty of putting a proposal into current wishlist, about your CropTool script. I hope you don't mind. A gadget into it.source allows to post the complete code of an image deriving from CropTool into any nsPage, using the excellent naming convention of the tool: so adding an image to a page is really one of the most simple contributions one can imagine! --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 19:30, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. For the record, it could also be an idea to add the request to https://github.com/danmichaelo/croptool/issues and cross-link. – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:26, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A companion crop request

[edit]

Dear Danmichaelo, I'm working on biographical content in Wikidata corresponding to the w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality, currently for Israel (my adopted home). Now I ask your kind assistance: you recently created File:Alexander Sened (cropped).jpg whose source is File:Sened.JPG. The source image's subject is a couple, Alexander and Yonat Sened, Israeli authors. What's now needed is a similar file, "Yonat Sened (cropped)" from the same source. I'd like to do it myself but am unsure of creating all the required permissions, etc. If you would make the companion file for Yonat Sened, I'd be glad follow up with Hebrew translation of the description and ensure the photo gets posted to the Women in Red project. I also welcome any advice you have for me. Thank you -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:11, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Deborahjay: Here: File:Yonat Sened.JPG! Thanks for letting me know, the only reason I didn't make a crop for Yonat was ignorance. – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:44, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Danmichaelo: , I'm delighted with the file result of our joint overnight enterprise. Many thanks! And to share the best spirits of the times: the global w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red pages organized in table format as w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality provide at-a-glance views of who's identified as "notable" to add to the English Wikipedia and missing a solo photo image. So - as with the Seneds in the source photo - where the woman shows up in a multi-figure or crowd scene, creating a solo file with her cropped, enlarged image seems a valuable addition to the projects involved. Besides, I saw that you made the file name update in the Wikidata item for Yonat Sened! So you can justly be proud, being on board with the global team. -- Cheers to you from the Western Galilee, Deborahjay (talk) 13:09, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Some baklava for you!

[edit]
This is inspired by your swiftly producing the file I requested (see above), in the style of the wish-granting Djinni of legend. (Recommended reading: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17624060-the-golem-and-the-djinni ) I'll also pay-it-forward by upping my participation in the Commons and learning to create files with separate and well-labeled portrait images by cropping couples' photos. By the way: baklava goes best with black coffee. Cheers! Deborahjay (talk) 12:44, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Deborahjay: Yum, thanks! I'll check out the Red project and the book too :) – Danmichaelo (δ) 21:52, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cropping

[edit]

Is this, what I'm doing now, Pinging you? You see I just don't know these things. Is it possible my problem with CropTool is something I'm doing wrong? Regards, Eddaido (talk) 10:45, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No problem – if I link to your username, like this: Eddaido, you will get a notification – this is called pinging or mentioning. As for CropTool, do you get a screen that looks like this: https://github.com/danmichaelo/croptool/issues/97 ? It seems like several users have (intermittent) problems now, but for many others it works as normal. Haven't been able to pinpoint why yet. – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:06, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining the pinging. Yes I do get a screen just like that. My problem is not intermittent. A born optimist I check several times each day! It is a very useful tool. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 23:29, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And thank you very much for sorting it out. Eddaido (talk) 08:22, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello from Germany, I wonder why I can't rotate an image step by step any more, but only via 90°-steps. Could you please remove this change? Thank you very much in advance. --Maimaid (talk) 13:30, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maimaid. This constraint is only there in lossless mode. Switch to precise mode and you should be allowed rotating at any angle. – Danmichaelo (δ) 21:51, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hedmarkmuseet / Domkirkeodden

[edit]

Hei!

– Danmichaelo (δ) 15:15, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

File:African Union conference center and office complex, AUCC.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

CropTool down?

[edit]

Hello! CropTool appears to be down as of today. When I try to run it I get an error page stating "No webservice", and https://tools.wmflabs.org/admin/tool/croptool is saying "Boom! Ouch. Something went horribly wrong. Hopefully there is a good explanation in the error logs. Error ID: c8kr0jab-1dce0e28". Please take a look at it when you can, thanks. --Animalparty (talk) 04:01, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Animalparty: Started it again now. Seems like there was some kind of server maintenance (graceful shutdown at 22:59:28) from which it did not get back up automatically. Unfortunately I didn't see the notification until now, so it was down for 10 hours. – Danmichaelo (δ) 09:25, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! seems to work just fine now. Cheers, --Animalparty (talk) 09:40, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. How do you know this weights File:1kg with creditcard (cropped).JPG File:1kg with creditcard.JPG File:2kg with creditcard.JPG are made of cast iron? Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 14:12, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Blast furnace chip worker and Danmichaelo: : These weights are my personal property and they have all the characteristics of cast iron. @Martinvl: Ok, I understood. Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 15:45, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thanks for bringing up the request I had at en.w. on Github! I have yet another suggestion however: I suggest the tool handles Trimming the same way it treats Remove border. In that I mean it renders the checkbox "I've removed the border" for every file that's tagged with Trimming and removes the template if the user didn't uncheck the checkbox. Instead of the text used for borders perhaps "I've trimmed the file" is a more suitable sentense in this case. Thanks!Jonteemil (talk) 23:31, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonteemil: Hi! I wasn't aware of the Trimming template, but it makes sense to support that too. I've added that now, with the text "I've trimmed the file". – Danmichaelo (δ) 23:28, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CropTool issues

[edit]

Hello!

I predominantly use CropTool on my iPhone 8 using the Safari browser. Two problems I have run into:

  1. When pressing "Back" (after having pressed "Preview), if you then before have zoomed (which I usually do because a phone screen is so small) it doesn't render correctly. Try it yourself. This problem is also present on my computer but there is isn't a problem because you don't really have to zoom.
  2. This is only a problem on my phone: I often accidently press outside the margins of the CropTool which makes the crop reset from where I touched. On the computer there is a cursor which show if you are pressing on the line, outside the line or inside the crop. Can you perhaps disable the "reset crop when pressing outside the margins" locally on my account? It is very frustrating when you have adjusted three sides of the rectangle (aka the crop) and then accidently press outside the margins and you have to start all over.

Thanks!Jonteemil (talk) 14:54, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to expand CropTool with svg-support

[edit]

It is pretty easy to crop svgs just with sed-commands. However toolforge.org is too complicated for me to be able to implement it.

I run https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/ the code was easy, but I had problems with the webinterface.

If I write a shell-script, would you like to help me with the webinterface?

 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 18:59, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure can try to add SVG cropping to CropTool if you provide me with the necessary commands or a shell script. – Danmichaelo (δ) 20:26, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I created it on https://github.com/JoKalliauer/cleanupSVG/blob/master/viewBoxSed.sh
How to call the script (e.g. croping of the upper border of File:Population_graph_for_Norway.svg)
viewBoxSed.sh Population_graph_for_Norway.svg 0 5 283 170
I know there are still some issues, but for >80% of the svg-files on commons it should work. (I did not check compatbility with strangefilenames, such as whitespaces, UTF-8, brackets, ...)
I would like to make a beta-version and then later bugfix the backend-scripts and include the posibility of resizing of the preview.
For the first version I would suggest to
  1. first page: ask for the file-name as currently done as done by https://croptool.toolforge.org/?site=commons.wikimedia.org&title=Population+graph+for+Norway.svg
  2. second page: ask for for numerical values (can contain digigts after the decimal point) a) x-start b)y-start c)width d)height e)optional: scaling factor
  3. run script and show on third page: preview of SVG as SVG
  4. fourth page: "overwrite" or "Upload as new file" or "download"
For future releases: (not ordered)
  1. scaling-factor to set a width or height for the preview (and calulating the second number; How to lossless resize SVGs is explained on w:en:User:Ronhjones/SVGreduce (after a long discussion at w:en:Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/RonBot_4)) ✓ Done
  2. read out the values of the initial svg (to know the original size, otherwise it is difficult for uses to get the four numbers right)
  3. rendered as PNG using e.g. Commons:Commons SVG Checker or https://svgcheck.toolforge.org/index.php
  4. show a preview on the second page (gererating by clicking a button)
  5. apply bugfixes/workarounds for librsvg-rendering issues/repair broken svgs, as done by User:SVGWorkaroundBot or on https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/
  6. make svgfiles optional valid (sometimes lossy)
Does this sound reasonable to you? (It seems to have many equality to the crop-tool, just a different backend-skript, but the front-end can be almost identical.)
Rotation would also be lossless possible (by manipulating the content), but I don't think it is very usefull for SVGs.
I know writing the website will be more work than writing those few lines in sed. If you need something I'm happy to help.
Please ping. ;-)

@Danmichaelo: Do you need some help, do have some questions, are you already working on it?  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 18:00, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the detailed instructions (and patience) @JoKalliauer: , and sorry I didn't get back to you yet. Just too much other stuff going on, so I've been a bit short on "wiki time", but I will get there in the coming weeks :) – Danmichaelo (δ) 19:47, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JoKalliauer: Started working on this today. Think I will do the XML manipulation directly in PHP using simplexml, like so: https://github.com/danmichaelo/croptool/blob/svg/src/php/File/SvgFile.php . A slight problem is that Cropper.js doesn't seem to work correctly if it doesn't get the size of the image in pixels, so I try to work around this by temporarily adding "width" and "height" in pixels to the file, and then remove it afterwards. Is it generally OK to always remove "width" and "height"? Second question: Do you happen to know how MediaWiki finds the "nominal size" of an SVG file? For instance "512 × 390 px" for File:WikiImplementationBug T194192.svg? Third question: Do you know one or more files that have "width" and "height", but no "viewBox", that I can test with? – Danmichaelo (δ) 22:45, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Danmichaelo: Since I'm in office: First a quick reply on the questions. (I will take a deeper look later.)
  1. Is it generally OK to always remove "width" and "height"?
    • If the file does not contain viewBox it is NOT ok to just remove "width"/"height", without reinserting anything. Simplified: A svg-file "needs" (a) "viewBox" or (b) "width"/"height" or (c) both. (To be precise: I know svg-files without [5] [6], but that leads (for librsvg and independently aswell for MediaWiki) almost always to problems)
    • SVG-Files do not have Pixels, therfore It does not make much sence to get the size of the image in pixels, except for the preview, but we could skip the preview in a first draft.
  2. Do you happen to know how MediaWiki finds the "nominal size" of an SVG file?
    • I personally would ignore it, maybe we should use the same size for our preview, but I prefer it depening on the avalable space on Crop-tool-site
    • the explanation of the preview-size (the nominally size is ihmo similar without the 800x600 limitation)
    • You have to differenciate between with "width"/"height" (independend on viewBox) or without.
      • If with "width"/"height" take the "width" and round it to an integer. If the width is higher than 800 as in File:BlankMap-World-v2.svg limit it to 800px, if the height is higher than 600 the width is limited in such a way that the hight is equal or below 600px.
      • If no "width"/"height" take width=512px (if the height does not exceed 600px) as for File:WikiImplementationBug T194192.svg
      • Even if the hight is limited as in File:MediaWiki_SVG_fonts.svg you can see that it is depending on the rounding of the width: The width is set to an integer that leads to a height is smaler or equal 600.
  3. Do you know one or more files that have "width" and "height", but no "viewBox", that I can test with?
 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 10:48, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The XML manipulation directly in PHP using simplexml is much more beautiful than using sed!
Regarding https://github.com/danmichaelo/croptool/blob/svg/src/php/File/SvgFile.php#L38 for the imho valid but unlikely event (rough guess 1 out of 100files) that "width" and/or "height" have units and there exists no viewBox, there is no general rule how render this image correctly (same issue when cropping using viewBox). Librsvg on MediaWiki uses for (mm|cm|in|pt) imho 90 dpi, but 96 dpi seems to be more the standard, therefore I would keep it as it is (also knowingly this could be improved).  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 11:47, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding support for WebP files in CropTool

[edit]

Hello!

Would you consider adding support for WebP files in CropTool? The WebP file format seems to be very transparent, in that it is open source and Google really seems eager to tell you everything about it. This makes me think that implementing CropTool for WebP files wouldn't perhaps be so hard. See for example https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/ and perhaps also https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/docs/api. Thanks!Jonteemil (talk) 23:53, 6 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, already brought up at Commons talk:CropTool/Archive 2#webp files.Jonteemil (talk) 20:09, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

CropTool pull request

[edit]

There's currently a very short pull request open on CropTool to allow it to recognize PermissionTicket, the replacement for the old PermissionOTRS template. Right now, any non-VRT agents attempting to crop an image with an associated ticket will trip an edit filter. Would you mind taking a look at the PR and merging/deploying it?
