Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

File:Statue ved Ulsrud Vgs.jpg
[edit]Hi, thank for you for notifying me about the image. I have one question, however. The law text states that this [the depiction of permanently mounted works of art and photographic works when located in or near a public space] does not apply when the work is clearly the main motive and the reproduction is exploited commercially (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Norway). I realise that the statue is clearly the main motive of the image, but I cannot see how the image is being "exploited commercially". Is it only necessary for one of the conditions to be met in order to mark the image as a copyright violation? Michae2109 (talk) 19:40, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- When considering the principle that Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content, that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose I do understand why the image was deleted. I apologise for my rather rash query, just ignore my previous message:)Michae2109 (talk) 19:50, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Sea Shepherd images
[edit]Hi, I tagged a whole pile of sea shepherd images for deletion as the flickr user who uploaded them has stated that he has only uploaded them to support sea shepherd and in fact does not have any rights to them. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a note on my talkpage on en.wikipedia. --Terrillja (talk) 16:04, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
File:Nisshin_Maru_vs_Sea_Shepherd.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi, regarding these images, I am not so sure that the 800x600 is an "upscaled" version with data loss. I think the flickr author (or perhaps the flickr software?) has done some arbitrary downscaling and saved of his/her original photograph to different sizes. Note that even the 500pixel version (on flickr) has a larger file size (90kb) than the 640pixel version (80kb). Editing software can easily produce a larger file size when down scaling an image (difference compression parameters for instance). Aesthetically I can not see any lower quality in the 800px version. The 800px version was uploaded by the flickr reviewer, so it is reasonable to assume it was from the flickr site, but no longer offered there now. --Tony Wills (talk) 00:41, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:50193 Rut Tellefsen.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:50193 Rut Tellefsen.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Bruk av grafer og tabeller fra SSB

- Yes. I think that is a well suited task for a bot. I found 125 categories sorted under "I" ([1]), in addition there are probably houndreds of categories sorted under "I" in the . These errors would be fixed by inserting Template:IMO. BTW, are you aware of Category:IMO checksum failed? - I have seen that category. I know the problem, but also know where it comes from. For administrative reasons the Miramar-site gave these dummy-IMO numbers to old ships. For us it is as helpful as for Miramar for the same reason as for other ships by IMO number: it groups images for the same ships but with different names. Therefore I saw no reason to skip these categories myself. --Stunteltje (talk) 10:09, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- I strongly discourage using invalid IMO numbers just to group related categories. According to the description in Category:Ships by name, the category with the old name should be a subcategory of the one with the new name if no IMO/ENI number exists for the ship. - 4ing (talk) 11:29, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

A cup of coffee for you!
[edit]Tak for dine kategoriseringer!
Mange takk for deilig kaffe.

- Dear Wikicommons
- I hereby confirm that I am the exclusive copyright holder and has all the rights to the image [Sørgående dagtog på Nordlandsbanen]. I hereby licenses it under the license "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" for use in Wikicommons. The images must be credited [Erik Borgersen/Akershusmuset].
- Best regards
- Mvh.
- Øivind Möller Bakken
- Head of Photography, Akershusmuseet
- 4ing (talk) 21:17, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Script
[edit]Hey there 4ing! I just developed a small simple script for filemovers and thought that you might use it. Paste importScript('User:Ethically Yours/fileMove.js');
in your skin page (say, vector.js) and reload your browser. You get a small link displaying "File Rename" in your toolbox to Media requiring renaming page. If the feedback is nice I'll add to it to display the number of files in backlog in a small box, but this is just a beta sort of, and anyways there's nothing much special, just that it's quite helpful. Thought you may be interested. Thanks! Ethically Yours (talk) 12:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

- @Dennis Bratland: What was the issue with this image? It is one in a series (see e.g. File:Polar_Pioneer_and_Blue_Marlin_(16558420663).jpg, or the complete series on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/backbone_campaign/sets/72157651608306218). - 4ing (talk) 20:07, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- I almost uploaded a bunch of their photos for the article I'm writing on the w:Seattle Arctic drilling protests, but then I noticed most of their photos are from other sources, often with somebody else's copyright notice right there in a watermark or in the EXIF. Examples: https://www.flickr.com/photos/backbone_campaign/17977299172/in/dateposted/, https://www.flickr.com/photos/backbone_campaign/17980429725/in/dateposted/, https://www.flickr.com/photos/backbone_campaign/17359878073/in/photostream/. Some of Backbone Campaign's photos might belong to the uploader, but we have no way to know, and they're clearly guilty of putting false copyrights on photos they don't own, so we can't trust anything they upload. I wish we could because I need these photos. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 20:15, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for the clarification. - 4ing (talk) 20:25, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Scotland is not in Antarctica :-)
[edit]Hi,
I notice you added File:Nacreous clouds circa 1995 Dundee Scotland 02.jpg and File:Nacreous clouds circa 1995 Dundee Scotland 01.jpg to your page User:4ing/Antarctica... thanks, but they were taken in Scotland (nowhere near Antarctica despite what some people say about the weather ;-) ), so they really don't belong there!
All the best,
@Laerol: A bot has added the images to my user page, based on the categorization of the images. Category:Polar stratospheric clouds is a sub-category to Category:Polar meteorology, in turn a sub-category to Category:Antarctica. Normally I remove non Antarctica-related images only if it is a large batch upload. - 4ing (talk) 22:39, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- No big problem, I was just letting you know!
- FWIW, I think this is a problem with subcategories in general- that the subject matter isn't always a strict subset of that of the parent/grandparent/etc. categories (e.g. the fact that "polar stratospheric clouds" aren't all Antarctica-based means they're not a strict subset of the grandparent "Antarctica" category's subject matter).
- Then again, I also figured out if we were to strictly enforce this, we'd have massive category proliferation, with many contrived-sounding over-split categories containing very few entries and the whole thing being less than helpful except to enforce that condition. So there's no obvious solution. Laerol (talk) 14:48, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:4ing/Antarctica, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of 1000 files per page. After the new edit, the page would have reached approximately 1471 files.
This usually happens because a gallery is too broad or because the galleries need to encompass a shorter timeframe. Please review your settings and request an appropriate change to your gallery. The logs are available here.
Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your the bot owner will remove the gallery altogether.

SKANDI ACU
[edit]- Hi, 4ing, vessel name is SKANDI ACU SKANDI ACU, I don't understand why do you write non-English letters. This ship is registered by DNV-GL, EU-Register. If the vessel Korea or Russia registered, we use English transliteration of ship name for this case not "Category:Адмирал Григорович (ship, 2016)", this is bad cat name, regards --PjotrMahh1 (talk) 17:11, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
- @PjotrMahh1: The category name follows the official policy described on Commons:Categories: Particular individual object (a specific person, building, monument, artwork, organization, event etc.) uses a singular form usually (but not always). Proper nouns which do not have an established English variant are not translated ad hoc but use the original form – Latin alphabets are used in original form including diacritics and derived letters, non-Latin alphabets are transcribed to the English Latin script. In this specific case, the ship name includes a diacritic letter, but it is written in the Latin alphabet. Please let me know if this is unclear to you. - 4ing (talk) 07:23, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- 4ing, do you understand that the name of ship (official proper noun) is Skandi Acu not Skandi Açu as you wish. Why do you not write Skandi Afu or Skandi Abu? We always and only take the ship name from register not from the heavens,--PjotrMahh1 (talk) 07:34, 30 October 2016 (UTC) P. S. This ship is neither by Norwegian nor Portuguese (Porto do Açu) register with ç-letters. If you meen Tromsø as city, is is o.k. If the Tromsø named ship is by Norwegian register is o.k. too, but Tromso if so named by international register. It is very bad that shipbuilders had painted Skandi Açu on the bow of this ship, det is wrong,--PjotrMahh1 (talk) 07:57, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- @PjotrMahh1: I disagree with you. The shipowner is naming the ship, and to my knowledge there are no rules that prohibit using diacritics in the name. - 4ing (talk) 20:48, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- If I want to name my ship SKANDI МОСКВА (SKANDI MOSKVA) I will register my ship in Russia, and if SKANDI Θεοδώρα, so in Greece. I cannot register the ship named Αγία Θεοδώρα or МОСКВА in Norway. No chance. I meen I as a ship owner. I must use English and ABC-letters of this country, for example + Õ, Ä, Ö, Ü in Estonia. And I don't see the letter "Ç" in the name on this page SKANDI ACU, best regards,--PjotrMahh1 (talk) 21:36, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- I think you are mixing diacritics with alphabets. We are not talking about Cyrillic or Greek alphabets, but Latin alphabet. - 4ing (talk) 21:53, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

All wrong? --Stunteltje (talk) 13:51, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Stunteltje: Yes, they are. The checksum fails for this number, meaning that it is not a valid IMO number. None of the sources you are listing are authoritative sources, and the error may come from a single source. Naval vessels do not have IMO number (there might be some exeptions). - 4ing (talk) 14:58, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
- I knew the fact that most naval vessels don't have IMO numbers. But sone have, most auxilliairy vessels and this is a tugboat. Assume you are right with the single source. Miramar uses numbers starting with a 5, for instance. O.K., convinced.--Stunteltje (talk) 15:24, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Old photos and paintings
[edit]I've been happy to be able to look through these great images, but a couple of copyright issues are pretty widespread. The first is no problem, and that's simply applying PD licenses to PD paintings and photos. The significant problem I see is that many of these indicate that the author is unknown, but they use a cc-by or by-sa license. If the author is unknown, than attribution is impossible. Another license has to be found for these. The best the museum could do is PD-Mark, which is unacceptable here. Is there a Norwegian license for images with unknown authors that are not otherwise PD? I'm not at all familiar with Norwegian licenses. We may have to go back thru these and tag the unknown author photos for deletion. I'll skip them for now. lNeverCry 21:57, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
- @INeverCry: I think we can use PD-Norway50 on photographs as new as 1970 if the photographer is unknown. Then the question is whether it is sufficient that the source (mostly museums) has registered the photographer as unknown. - 4ing (talk) 22:31, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
- I just resigned my reviewer right, due mostly to questions like the one in your second sentence. With a lot of these licensing questions, you've got to wonder if some nice day your work's gonna go up in smoke with a bunch of deletion requests because the license isn't just so. Since this involves several hundred files, I would suggest you ask about this at COM:VP/C. I wouldn't want to see you waste any hard work on guessing. lNeverCry 23:11, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Nydalen kapell
-- Vinguru (talk) 08:52, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Vinguru (talk) 09:42, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Vinguru: Dette bør registreres i OTRS, ellers risikerer du at fila vil bli slettet.

Se Commons:OTRS for nærmere informasjon.
I all vennlighet, --GAD (talk) 19:54, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Category:Female writers by country viser at kategoriseringen er utstrakt, dog mer for kvinner enn menn (Category:Male writers by country).
Category:Women of Norway by occupation inneholder ni underkategorier, da samme gjør Category:Men of Norway by occupation. - 4ing (talk) 07:48, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

File redirect after cropping
[edit]Hei 4ing.
Med vennlig hilsen Migrant (talk) 10:57, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Migrant: Nei, jeg har bare en pause ;-) - 4ing (talk) 11:59, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- Den er grei, du. Med vennlig 16. mai-hilsen Migrant (talk) 13:41, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
Med vennlig hilsen Migrant (talk) 23:08, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- 4ing (talk) 07:05, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Med vennlig hilsen Migrant (talk) 20:04, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Vinguru (talk) 17:42, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- 4ing (talk) 19:59, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
Vinguru (talk) 19:49, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Med vennlig hilsen Migrant (talk) 20:04, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
- 4ing (talk) 20:25, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

- 4ing (talk) 20:45, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
Bilder på Bokhylla
[edit]Jeg stusser litt over regler og muligheter.
Vinguru (talk) 08:38, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

File tagging File:Havvindparken Sheringham Shoal.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Havvindparken Sheringham Shoal.jpg.
The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Havvindparken Sheringham Shoal.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Øystein Bache 2015 (cropped).jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Øystein Bache 2015 (cropped).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad or because the galleries need to encompass a shorter timeframe. Please review your settings and request an appropriate change to your gallery. The logs are available here.
Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your the bot owner will remove the gallery altogether.

Removingː FileːMemory shield of Kristian Øvrevollseie in Hovet
[edit]Hello 4ing, It has been a time ago that I edited something in Wikipedia, forgot too much, but here to try to contact you because you removed the file about Kristian Øvrevollseie. To avoid to be blocked I need to know what specifically I cannot upload in Wikimedia Commons about Norway. I live in Norway, and the only pictures I make are made in Norway. I have a lot to be shared. Reason to avoid to be blocked. Is art photographed by myself in a museum also forbidden? --DutchColours (talk) 11:44, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- @DutchColours: I think you will find useful information on Commons:Freedom of panorama. Generally, artists must have died more than 70 years ago for their works to be in the public domain. - 4ing (talk) 12:31, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- 4ing Thank you for the link. Howeverː Not one of my photos uploaded in Wikimedia Commons has ever been in the public domain. They are all licensed with Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, a license that I could chose in a list of possibilities, created by Wikimedia Commons. You write about the Øvrevollseie fileː "Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose." Againː this has never been the case since I uploaded my latest photo there. So, I am very surprised to meet this problem in october 2020, and found today, because of personal circumstances not able to answer earlier. thanks for answering, in advance. --DutchColours (talk) 14:34, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Bingar1234 Bingar1234 (talk) 23:07, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Bingar1234: Takk for info.

Takk for hjelpen! --Constituto (talk) 18:13, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
As far as I can see you placed the image here. Unfortunately it is not the right ship. It is the Rhine Forest (ship, 1972), IMO 7125706, look at the image.--Stunteltje (talk) 12:16, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Stunteltje: I suppose you refer to the image in the infobox? The infobox was added to the IMO category by User:Pi bot in 2018. The infobox gets the image from Wikidata, where the image was added to the element «MS München» (Q176204) by User:VIGNERON in 2016. If the image is not depicting MS München, it has to be corrected at Wikidata. - 4ing (talk) 14:29, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, I got pinged since I operate Pi bot. It looks like this came from fr:München (navire, 1972), where the image is used even though it's not the same ship. I've swapped the image on Wikidata for one of the model. It might take a while to show up here due to caching. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- L.S. It works in my browser already. Thanks to you both. (I am not familiar with Wikidata, too difficult for a simple user.)--Stunteltje (talk) 15:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

- I'm late but thanks for noticing the error, I corrected it on the article fr:München (navire, 1972) on the French Wikipédia as well. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 16:46, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:BUSEN 8.JPG
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:BUSEN 8.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 i Norge
[edit]Hi there! I see that you have participated in the Norwegian part of Wiki Loves Monuments in previous years. Thank you very much! I'd like to inform you that the 2022 edition of the contest has just started, and I want to encourage you to participate this year as well!
Photos are not required to have been taken this year – they can be from any time, as long as they are uploaded during October 2022. Maybe you have some more pictures from previous years that can be uploaded for this year's contest?
You can read more about it on the contest page. Thanks, and good luck! Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 17:56, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

spørsmål om kategorier og wikidata
[edit]God morgen!
- mvh 4ing (talk) 22:56, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Takk for svar. Mvh Pmt (talk) 08:10, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
