Hi D. Benjamin Miller, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Battle of Zurich picture renaming

[edit]

Hello Benjamin, I have seen you have declined te renaming of this picture :

because it does not comply with renaming requests. In fact, there's no certainty that Florentin Ficatier is the wounded soldier painted par Bouchot, because no source talks about it, and so the title « La probable représentation de Florentin Ficatier » (in English : The likely representation of Florentin Ficatier) is an original research and personal deduction by a contributor that should not be present on Wikimedia Commons nor Wikipedia. Cheers, --Kozam (talk) 17:16, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

All right---I must admit I'm not an expert on the painting or anything like that, I just saw the description and and the title and figured that the new title would be significantly more ambiguous. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 18:28, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of catfish image

[edit]

I'm a bit puzzled about this and have re-added the rename tag. "Liniendornwels" is the German name for Platydoras armatulus. That is not the species on the photo. The species on the photo is Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, which is called Rotflossen-Antennenwels in German. I used the scientific name as that reduces the risk of confusion, but if you prefer using the German name Rotflossen-Antennenwels in the file name that's fine by me. Regards, RN1970 (talk) 23:25, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies! My German knowledge is not very good, and I wrongly conflated the two types of fish. Since it is a true misidentification, I will change the name. Sorry about that. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 23:26, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No problem and thanks for your fast reply. It is appreciated. RN1970 (talk) 23:28, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Problematic rename

[edit]

Hi D. Benjamin Miller. Don't rename files to names like "Delete me". Tagging them for deletion is enough. Thanks, Storkk (talk) 09:52, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, you're right. Was just a bit angry at my own stupid error, having uploaded a tiny fragment of a PD-US work onto Commons... you can delete that redirect along with the file. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 09:57, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
File:Guy Deutscher (cropped).JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. [edit]
If you use the helper gadget, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi D. Benjamin Miller, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can enable the LicenseReview gadget from Preferences.

Important: You should not review your own uploads, nor those of anyone closely related to you!

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! -- CptViraj (talk) 06:50, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moynihan Train Hall speedy taggings

[edit]

I have converted your Moynihan Train Hall speedy taggings to a batch DR, as photos taken in a public place are ineligible for speedy deletion per COM:CSD#F3. Also, please don't replace the stated license with a deletion tag even if you believe it to be incorrect; instead, just put the (speedy or regular) deletion tag at the top, along with your explanation of why you consider the image to be improperly licensed, and the patrolling admin will take care of the rest. -- King of ♥ 01:27, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Again please note that photos of public signs are not eligible for speedy deletion: File:Le College Dawson.JPG. -- King of ♥ 07:13, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Even for prose with a printed copyright notice on it? D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 07:15, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. If we try to limit it to "obvious" cases, we run into the problem that different people have different definitions of "obvious". (And prose is in fact allowed in a few countries, and COM:DM could be a factor in some cases, etc.) It's easiest to just create a bright line and stick to it. -- King of ♥ 16:42, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
