Todo

Just a few small notes for when I get back to this later, or if someone else feels like doing it.

  • Not loading only on wgAction = view, but also on 'purge', 'historysubmit' and 'submit' (=preview).
  • When detecting from browser and converting into the 3-priority thing, the '-' get's cut, but the '_' doesn't. Insert another round for that.
  • Something got screwed up about that 'only one form per page' thing. See for example Category:Places. -- Safari 5, Mac.

The wgActions is not that easy to fix, there is a check on special page, to avoid the gaget to display on them; but the preview of a page affects this value. So I am wondering on how to fix properly this. Esby (talk) 15:52, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

There's another bug within the line ...$(this).attr('id') != 'bodyContent' && $(this).attr('id') != 'LangTableLangs'..., I propose. This makes it behave different in view and preview, where the outer div has another id. For example, compare view and edit. As a workaround I have enclosed the text with a <div class="multilingual">, but actually the id="wikiPreview" should be added to the list. I hope I guessed the right reason.

English: When a language section of mld contains a word or phrase in a different language, marked with {{Lang}} (e.g. {{lang|ru|русский текст}}), the currently enabled mld hides that word or phrase. See, for example, the description at that page:

I think that one way to fix that is to add a new parameter to all language template, (I know this is silly, but I don't see any other way) which would translate to a new class attribute, eg: always-shown, so the javascript can know it should not be hidden. There would be another purpose to this parameter, but with a different usage: implementing the script at the local wikis, to allow the local wiki users to hide /show the associated descriptions. In this case, the local wiki lang template would need to use this parameter, since their usage there is not corresponding to the commons usage. (the lang template are locally used there for indicating another language, but there is no sense in hiding/showing such language there. Now, the description coming from commons could be hidden/shown. I thought about it again, the special new parameter is only needed for the few Commons cases that need it. Externals wikis can use a version of the script that will only activate on the file namespace and only when the file is not a local one. Esby (talk) 10:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

recent refactoring - bugs

Some recent refactoring was done. I am quite neutral on it (no real opinion). Now there are news bugs and known solved bugs that are coming back:

  • Default language is english?
  • the image annotation and mld template are still causing issues. Wrongly displayed such as File:Berliner_kongress.jpg. It's an old bug, but it surfaces again under a new form: only the english version is displayed what ever is the choice.

I also hope the new script works on all browsers. (untested here) Esby (talk) 06:39, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

The languageselector is basically unchanged, there's no default on english. Regarding {{Mld}} tags on IA: I got a fix just need to test it before--DieBuche (talk) 06:48, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Changes needed to implement the script on local wiki sides

There might be a need to implement this script on the local wiki side, in order to offuscate the non wanted languages, since the local wikis are only using one language.
Here's the changes that are in my opinion needed to make it work by copying the script on a local wiki: I tested on fr wiki.
The idea would be to keep the script source here, and just to deploy it within a local wiki by copying the content to the corresponding page.
The summary of changes can be seen here
Take care in reading the diff, as it shows changes that are not existing or necessary, the only changes, in my opinion that should be performed are:

  • $ alias to $j needs to be defined as it is not necessarily defined in all local wikis

if (typeof $ == 'undefined') $=jQuery;

  • On my test on fr , there was an issue with $.cookies 'not a function', I ended disabling cookie handling, as the user will most likely wants to see its user language on a local wiki.

The other idea behind that is there should be no other commons script to deploy to use this script on a local wiki.

  • there were two conditions to add:

Language select options

Can we add language names to language &ltselect&gt tag? That would improve usability, here's what is to be done towards that:

Yep, but there are users which set its language to these options in the preferences and for some variants there can be big diferences in the text. Compare for example these lines:

I am unsure if such modifications should be performed or not. Is there a way to rely on translate wiki for the internationasation, so the code stays more or less clear? Also, to talk back on 'kk-cn' and 'kk-kz', this javascript relies on the existence of localized template. Should the cn text be selected when using kk-cn an the kk (or kz?) text be used on the other side? I see a similar issue with de-ch, while the two language have separate code, I don't think that the {{De-ch}} exists on commons, and {{Ch}} is used for chammoro. so basically, if something has to be done, it must be done on case per case, since no generalization can be performed. Stripping language variant codes

I want to raise this problem one more time. I use be-tarask interface. So, it's not very good for me to get beby default. I've read the previous discussion and still can't get the idea of such a policy. If a user selects "dashed" language, they will get something irrelevant. It's unacceptable as well. Here we get some ignorance towards all these locales. I don't see some template inexistance as something bad. Anyway, it can be fixed quick enough to stay unnoticed by general users.

it's not like those two were thrown away, it's more like all specific language code were thrown away. as most don't and won't have a specific language template on commons: eg: fr-be, fr-ch, en-uk, en-us, etc.
Now pt-br and be-tarask seems to be different enough to get their own template on commons {{Pt-br}} and {{Be-tarask}}.
The issue is what to do when such language are selected by the user? there is obviously a need to fallback to {{Be}} when there is no {{Be-tarask}} existing. Same for {{Pt}} and {{Pt-br}}, and maybe the reverse is true, supposing we get {{Pt-br}} and no {{Pt}} in a description...
So some coding has to be done to support that...

So are we talkin about templates only? If templates are the issue, then there's no problem to make a temporary redirect for all language variants which still don't have one. They can be fixed in future if needed. If something is translated into xx-xxx, and not in xx, then it's problem of xx community and its users. Well, xx-xxx would still be displayed in the list, so people will see it. Or we may let people see all variants, not the basic ones. It's much more reasonable, and it makes no ignorance attitude. I'm seeing the fallback problem mentioned by [[User:E, personally, that might be caused by a fix for the issue Wizardist was reporting. My locale is set to en-gb and I've just been to the Stewards election page and I get all languages displayed, unless I choose en from the drop-down list. There won't always be British English content and it would be better to show me generic English than everything. Similarly, if there is no Brazilian Portuguese, then generic Portuguese would be better than language soup, surely? Looking at the JavaScript (and my JS is pretty dated these days, so I could well be wrong), it seems like the code (within the method apply)

Since we have many categories workarounds do not help really. However, the year cats are strange: in my case above it helped to use a mld insted of simple language tags. Porting to a gadget

Right now, we have a gadget to disable this script. Since MW 1.18 there are default gadgets. I suggest making a default gadget from this one for the following reasons:

  1. Some scripts (like the slideshow) will depend on this one, once I've rewritten it. Gadgets are RL-modules and can be easily loaded/ their state can be checked
  2. Opt-out gadgets are counter-intuitive; if something is ticked in the preferences, this should mean something is on and will be loaded.
  3. Code minification (comments & white space are stripped by RL)

Thanks for the error-message, additionally I made a mistake; The intended behavior was to gracefully reduce the features if wpAvailableLanguages is not available.
The intention is to display the language instead of the two-letter code. You can see it on Category:Flickr images needing human review.

Gadget does not seem to work for me

I have the gadget enabled, but if it is supposed to collapse e.g. {{de|Foo}} if your language is en or whatever, then it does not work for me. E.g. for me [2], in View mode, reads:

Seems work randomly

For example File:Tour Eiffel 3c02660.jpg (File:Converted to SVG.svg) displays no dropdown and however all languages. But File:Escudo de España.svg and File:Flag of Cairo.svg for example works!? Ach sorry, habe das völlig falsch verstanden.●°.°●. Dann aber noch eine Frage, (im Namen von) Sicherlich hatte gefragt, ob man nicht mehr als eine Sprache als Favorit auswählen kann!? TypeError thrown when remotely loaded

{{Editprotected}} In the object initialisation, $OuterContainer: mw.util.$content throws a TypeError if the script runs before mediawiki.util has loaded. This can happen when loaded from meta:MediaWiki:Common.js, or similar. Simply removing that initialisation should fix it, instead relying on the initialisation in the ready handler. Gadget should use hook instead of document ready event

(See also the Phabricator task.) When using scripts that reload the page via Ajax (such as Convenient Discussions and DiscussionTools) the language selection isn't preformed on reload, and all the language versions get displayed instead of only the selected one.
