Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Praveenp,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Code issues in User:Praveenp/common.js
[edit]Hi Praveenp, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.
Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:
- You edited User:Praveenp/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
- Though, that change appears to introduce 2 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
- To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Main page?
[edit]Dude, what happened to the main page yesterday?? Do you know? 'Cause I think maybe you do and am very curious. Thanks! KDS4444 (talk)
- @KDS4444: Nothing much :-) Earlier an admin nominated his own sock to sysop and succeeded. But eventually check user investigation filed and he failed. As a sendoff gesture, he deleted some 1000 pages (?) including Main Page and various scripts. He was blocked locally and removed his admin flags temporarily removed by stewards. A desysop process is progressing.--Praveen:talk 13:34, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
Valued Image Promotion
[edit]Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Erebus ephesperis dorsal.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:Cpp in GNU emacs.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.
|
The reason given by the user who added this tag is: No source code provided, redistribution under the GPLv2+ license is impossible.

Guidance on indenting posts
[edit]Hi. It was important for me to change the indentation to make a reply to your post without disrupting the accessibility of the conversation. WMF has passed Resolution:Nondiscrimination, which prohibits discrimination against disabilities in example.
Though Commons is not English Wikipedia, the latter has guidance on the subject to exactly point the disruptances of your reverts: en:MOS:LISTGAP. Had your edit been on English Wikipedia, it would've been a completely uncontroversial change per en:WP:TPO. Commons lacks a more specific guideline on the subject.
Colons (:
) in wiki markup represent definition/description list items, which always require a definition/description list heading (;
or <dl>
) to be accessible. They are good for glossary and such.
PS: Calling my edits disruptive was unfounded from you without explanation. 2001:2003:54FA:2751:0:0:0:1 19:32, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hi! I noticed you uploaded a few of Raja Ravi Varma's works (a long while ago...): I came across this file with very little information, and was wondering if you perhaps recognise it or maybe verify if it is also by Raja Ravi Varma? To my untrained eye, it looks like it could be, but a google search doesn't throw it up. I'm just trying to add a bit more information on the file. I don't know anything else about it! Thanks for your help. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:33, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Deadstar, Frankly I don't know. I am not a professional, I just used some old books from ancestral home to id some images :-). That said, the bottom Devanagari writing in the image says "Pune: Chithrashala", which means Pune imprints. Ravivarma lithographs and oliographs were printed by Ravi Varma Press. Many others copied or mimicked Ravi Varma Style, so it is difficult to reach a conclusion without any strong evidence.--Praveen:talk 18:16, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your reply, I'll add your comment about the Devanagari writing if you don't mind - it might help whoever looks at it after us :) Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 19:11, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!
