- This appears to be the John Philip Sousa Bridge. For the first two images, the view is looking west, not east, and both sides of the bridge are in DC, not in Maryland. The coordinates are also incorrect for all six images, they should be 38.872620, -76.968480. Antony-22 (talk) 19:12, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

- It looks like the image was switched with another; images #172 and #173 on the African Americans in WWII image list. The correct description should be "As a landing barge noses onto the beach, members of the Negro Seabee Battalion clamber ashore. This assault training is supplemental to the Seabees' chief work as construction crews for the U.S. Navy." Ca. December 1942. The identifier should be 208-N-570, but I can't find the corresponding record in ARC, so I don't know if the correct high-res TIFF is available to upload. - This image, which has now been moved to a different name, is actually of USS Colorado (ACR-7). I believe it should be located at File:Colorado (Armored Cruiser 7), renamed the Pueblo. Port side, underway, 09-1907.tif Ed [talk] [en:majestic titan] 07:22, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Actually, I think this is a larger problem -- the photo is associated with the incorrect ARC record, as that one is plainly for a different photo. The correct NAIL number for this one is 19-N-6-10-11 per this source; the correct ARC ID for that should be 512923 however that record has yet a different photo associated with it -- File:Colorado (Armored Cruiser 7), renamed the Pueblo. Port side, underway, 09-1907.jpg -- but that photo is clearly not of the Colorado, but of the USS Pennsylvania, as that is a famous photo of the first airplane to land on a ship, flown by Eugene Ely. File:Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser 4), starboard stern quarter with Eugene P. Ely landing plane on flight deck, 01-18-1911 - NARA - 520791.tif is a correctly-named and associated version of that photo. Carl Lindberg (talk) 15:23, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Contradictory information between "Koch, K., Photographer" and the "NARA record" link. The Author of "Sociale verdediging", 1982, World War I historian Pr. Koen Koch of Leiden University, was born in 1945 according to this website. So he cannot have taken photographs in 1919. On E-Bay the same picture is sold with a different marking "Karl Koch Kiel" instead of "M L Carstens Hamburg". See also This other one with "Karl Koch Kiel", and this other one.

- While I can't confirm that these are not Mandan doing a buffalo dance, this is certainly not by Bodmer in the 1830s unless we have time travelling photographers bringing their own electric light fixtures. Bodmer did do a couple paintings of Mandan buffalo dances but this photograph is unrelated. Rmhermen (talk) 02:05, 13 August 2011 (UTC) Update: I believe that the second image is the one described (reversed descriptions) Rmhermen (talk) 22:11, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The images are switched in the NARA records on these; I have switched the images here on Commons so now they are fixed locally. - The images got switched on the two above records (I just added a line for the other one); I fixed them on Commons by cross-uploading the images to the correct descriptions/records. Presumably NARA will do this eventually as well; there are a number of similar issues with the American Indian Select List series (and a few other places). - This is a picture of an cavalry expedition to the Great Wall of China, not earthquake victims in San Fran. Rmhermen (talk) 04:50, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- This is interesting; the ARC record actually has two images, the correct San Francisco one and the Great Wall image, and it looks like the bot picked up the latter one. The Great Wall image is actually the one (correctly) associated with ARC 531019; it looks like that image was accidentally also attached to the ARC record one number higher. If that could just be removed from the ARC 531020 record, the bot could probably be re-run to pick up the correct image (though it'd be good to keep *this* image as well, but just with the correct metadata/description). Carl Lindberg (talk) 00:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay, I uploaded File:Troop L, 6th U.S. Cavalry, at the Great Wall of China, near the Ming Tombs. East of Nan-Kow Pass. - NARA - 531019.tif with this image, which appears to be the correct association. So, the San Francisco image can be corrected at any time, if possible (and maybe should be deleted if it is not possible). Part of the original problem may be that the Great Wall image has a Signal Corps number of 75130 printed on it, but instead in what looks to be a mistake got the local identifier of 111-SC-95130 , whereas the San Francisco image actually does have the 95130 number printed on it, and ended up with a 111-SC-95130A local identifier. - How are these images public domain? Were they not marked as copyrighted when created/published? Unless the artists were government employees (as opposed to contractors), this is the only plausible route I can see to them being PD. These are modern artworks by unknown artists, and presumably NARA has no rights to them. Even the donor would not have had the rights, unless they explicitly purchased the copyrights as well as the physical artworks (sale of an original artwork does not equate to sale of a copyright). - There is a copyright notice (albeit blurry) on the lower left of these posters. The author is not likely "unknown"; they may be "not provided", but that does not excuse us for ignoring the obvious (that there is a possible copyright claim) and claim these as federal works. The Archival Description for "World War II Posters, compiled 1942 - 1945" (ARC Identifier 513498) states "Restricted - Possibly Copyright Some or all of this material may be restricted by copright or other intellectual property right restrictions" under Use Restriction. The items in this ARC should not be casually uploaded to here. Jappalang (talk) 12:44, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The author is The Sheldon-Claire Company. Apparently this series dates from 1942, or possibly later in World War II. I could not find any renewal registrations for these in the years 1969-1973 in the Artwork sections, so I think copyright was not renewed. The "Possibly Copyright" notice on the series means that some of the items in the series have restrictions; however individual items which do not have restrictions should be fine (note the "Unrestricted" determination on these posters -- they were not uploaded casually, but I think that field was checked). The author should be mentioned but I think the PD determination was fine. Carl Lindberg (talk) 23:57, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Wrong image; the current picture is actually of Charleston, and is correctly associated with the ARC ID 559146 (which was also uploaded at File:Old Charleston Houses - NARA - 559146.tif). - Location is actually Fulton (Illinois, United States, North and Central America) county; not sure if such a subject ID exists in ARC yet. Also, farm name might be misspelled. (N.B.: These photos are not of Liverpool, but somewhere in the interior of Fulton County. For what it's worth, the name of the site is "Lowell Wier Farm" (note spelling) in recent Sanitary District actions, if one needs something more specific than Fulton County. I haven't been able to place exactly where in the county it is yet, but Chicago's sanitary district (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District) still owns it.) - Description and location subject ID are both misleading. This is an ad, probably in the city of Henry (rather than Henry County), advertising a motorcycle race at the fairgrounds in Farmer City, not in Henry itself. Two locations are the subject of this photo; neither are Peoria (ARC subject ID 4207836): (1) "Henry (Marshall county, Illinois, United States, North and Central America) inhabited place" (didn't find in ARC subject IDs; this is the city of Henry, which is not in Henry County); (2) "Farmer City (DeWitt county, Illinois, United States, North and Central America) inhabited place" (didn't find in ARC subject IDs) is the event advertised on the poster. - This is a ticker-tape parade on LaSalle Street in the Chicago Loop. Location and date verifiable from, for example, AP wirephoto (bs41430stf) "CHICAGO, Sept. 4 -- Nixon Comes to Chicago -- Republican presidential nominee Richard Nixon flashes a victory sign at crowd lining LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago today as Mrs. Nixon responds with a wave." (image and caption in eBay auction 200757105001 for example). I've added a description= tag on the TIFF, as well as geographic coordinates. Two related issues:
- The date is wrong (or at least isn't the date of the event): This photograph was taken on 1968-09-04
- Location is "Chicago (Cook county, Illinois, United States, North and Central America) inhabited place" (ARC subject ID 4201352). Closeapple (talk) 02:04, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- There's a properly labeled picture of the same bridge here: File:Federal engineers bridging the Tennessee River at Chattanooga, 03-1864 - NARA - 519418.jpg. - Serious identification error. This photo is used in some 70 projects to illustrate the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (August 23, 1939) but in reailty it depicts the signature of another treaty, the German–Soviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty (September 28, 1939). This can be noticed by comparing this image with similar Bundesarchiv images (1, 2) and pictures of both events published in Soviet newspapers. One can notice that people in NARA 540196 image (especially Molotov and Ribbentrop) are dressed the same way as on September 28 but differently from their clothing on August 23. The complete story with more images (not public domain unfortunately) was featured in Ukrainian media and can be found here (Ukrainian only unfortunately) — NickK (talk) 00:45, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

- As the description itself notes, this is a picture of Charleston, SC, not Richmond. A similar picture at the Library of Congress also lists it as Charleston [248]. It appears to have been taken from atop the left side of the roof of the Orphan House (see [249],[250]), looking southwest. Several structures still in existence can be identified, including the West Point Rice Mill (left hand side in far distance on the edge of the mill pond, with two smokestacks), the roof of the Bethel Methodist Church (far left) and 210 Calhoun Street [251] (the large white building to the right of the Bethel Church, with the irregularly-sized dormers). This map of Charleston from the 1870s also syncs with the picture when looking at the buildings above the Orphan House (#15). The file name should therefore be accordingly changed. Also, the "^" in the file name appears to have originally been a question mark.Ro4444 (talk) 03:23, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

- The description says that this is "OFF ROUTE 800, NEAR FAIRVIEW, OHIO, AND STEUBENVILLE" [the rest of the description is cut off), and this image has been assigned, to a "Fairview (Ohio)" geographic record, https://research.archives.gov/id/10043227, but the record is for a different Fairview, Ohio. This is http://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq:3:::NO::P3_FID:1064633, a tiny community in Adams County, 200 miles away from Steubenville and the Fairview where this is located, http://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq:3:::NO::P3_FID:2398858, an incorporated village. I'm not sure if this is a mistake with the authority record (i.e. they just assigned it to the wrong county) or if they assigned the wrong authority record to the image. The same authority record is linked to two other images, ARC 555639 and ARC 554820, but both of them, like 554818, are plainly near the village of Fairview: 555639 is off Interstate 70 (goes through the village of Fairview, but three counties away from the Adams County community), and 554820 is off State Route 808 (doesn't appear to exist; perhaps a typo for State Route 800 near the village of Fairview). - This image is from southeast of downtown showing the recently completed US 75/Central Expressway, Interstate 45 and Interstate 30 interchange on the right side of the photo. Interstate 30 runs left to right across the middle of the photo. Interstate 45 is south of Interstate 30 in the bottom right quadrant of the photo. US 75/Central Expressway can be seen north of Interstate 30 going by the east side of downtown. Technically most of the highway shown north of Interstate 30 is only signed as US75 but is actually Interstate 345. US 75 really begins northeast of downtown and is only barely visible in this photo. 47.188.139.236 22:15, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
