Request: This image will be used for OCR and text proofreading for Wikisource. It's necessary to remove background and keep text quality as better as possible. I have Adobe Photoshop Elements and GIMP. I'm not specialist in graphics, so step-by-step instruction will be appreciated since book have 231 pages. Great! Many thanks for helping!
Problem that there are also photos with captions. I think photos should be left as it is, but background for captions should be removed. Text pages should be also converted to gray scale. I preprocessed ~ 70 pages (rotation + crop), so I could send them to you via e-mail. Also cropping for smaller size (but to uniform size (and to round numbers :-) across all pages will be good idea). Please send me message via Commons e-mail, so I'll be able to answer you.

I have uploaded an example.Do you want to try and run the text-rec over it? Was this what you were expecting? Amada44  talk to me 18:05, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tried OpenOCR and quality of recognized text was OK (as far as possible for old Russian orthography OCRed as new one :-). Thank you again for your job!
Will be also good idea to center images horizontally.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:21, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tried a simple edit of the photo; feel free to revert if you don't think it's an improvement. Basically all I did was use the "Auto" button in GIMP's color levels adjustment. I didn't even try to remove paper grain or shadows/vignetting, since I couldn't see how to do that for this image without losing detail. (If you had an image of a blank page taken with the exact same lighting and camera position, one could dividing by it after smoothing. If the image didn't have much black, I could try to reconstruct a blank page by inpainting. But with as much black as in this picture, that seems pretty hopeless.) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 17:11, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for editing the image. Eugene suggested to edit the images like this. Do you want to do that with the image you eddited? Amada44  talk to me 20:40, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a version with the borders and caption included. I'm not sure why one would want to retain the color of yellowed paper, since it surely cannot have been intentional. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:49, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Electrical safety illustrations

ResolvedMoved to Illustration Workshop. --ZooFari 06:45, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request: This image was done by adding photos from textbook about electrical safety; but as I'am not knight of the brush, quality of this image became too bad. So, I want to redraw image with the same meaning of all illustrations to more quality image with more beautiful and more quality illustrations. Here is need to draw silhouettes of the people, but more quality and fit all of them into equal dimensions. Great thanks for doing it and helping me! Dmitry G (talk) 22:01, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

First of all, this request should probably go to the illustration workshop. Second of all, the illustrations from the book are almost surely copyrighted, and should not be uploaded to Commons. If you want to provide them as a reference for someone to redraw them, you could upload them to your own website or to an image sharing site like imageshack.
On a more positive note, you might be able to find existing illustrations of at least some of the techniques shown the picture in Category:First aid, and in particular the subcategories Category:Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Category:Recovery position. Alas, I couldn't immediately find any existing illustrations matching the pictures on the first row. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 15:58, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks much, I'll go to illustration workshop with this request. As for copyright, I think better to delete it after derivative will be ready. Dmitry G (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's what I was thinking of. There's currently a discussion going on about whether the original image is acceptable for the Commons. If it is not, then your modified version will be very useful. Otherwise, if the consensus is that the original image is fine, we will use the original version. Farben gefallen mir besser, vielleicht doch etwas ZU bunt.
Cut the wooden frame from File:Jan Wellens de Cock Calvary.jpg

[edit]

Request: The three paintings of the triptych are obviously old and in the public domain. This photograph of the triptych, unfortunately, is not, because it's too new and, showing the wooden frame as well, has a bit too much of a 3D character to be a faithful 2D reproduction. There are two courses of action: either a) delete the file or b), as suggested by Darwinius here, crop the painting parts and mount them in a manner similar to the initial disposition, then upload the montage as the latest version and finally delete the old versions only. Can someone here do this? I'd be grateful not to have to delete the image. Regards Rosenzweig δ 16:33, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Does anyone know what happened to this photo? I uploaded a new one, for no result. Al Lemos (talk) 14:10, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what happened with your photo but it isn't solely a bug on the side of wikimedia as the colors were off when viewing the original file as well. I reencoded your photo with GIMP, in very high quality so loss of detail should be minimal. The colors spontaneously got more natural as well. Did your camera generate this file? If so you should maybe update the firmware. Richardprins (talk) 12:37, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just read the post above this post. It seems that CMYK colors don't work well with wikimedia and browsers etc. you should upload in rgb. Richardprins (talk) 13:09, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Unfortunately, this photograph contains a non-free derivative of the photograph on the poster. I don't know whether it's better to blur the non-free poster or to do a partial crop of the photograph so that the poster becomes de minimis. What do you think? — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:30, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): * I'd say the photo is de minimis as it stands now. The focus of the picture is on the candidate and I would consider the poster as background. Warfieldian (talk) 19:33, 24 August 2011 (UTC) not de minimis. blurring of the poster would detract from the image. Crop to focus on the subject of the image would be better. Warfieldian (talk) 21:26, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I'm doubtful. I'll post a message at "Commons:Village pump/Copyright" for more feedback on this. (Anyway, if the photograph is to be cropped, perhaps the left side can be removed so that only half of the face on the poster is showing, and the words "Singaporeans First". I think that would safely make the poster de minimis) — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:42, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you think that just removing the left portion of the photograph is sufficient (so that only half of the face on the poster is visible), without making it into a landscape photograph? I think we should have a version that retains as much of the original photograph as possible, to enable other editors to create derivatives from it. (No need to delete the crop you have created, though – some users may find it useful.) — Cheers, JackLee talk 08:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How much restoration?

[edit]
Stale

Request: This is not really a request for work (although any help will be appreciated), but a request for comments. I have tried to restore this old photo, and I wonder how much restoration is needed. We can see several layers of defect, upto the fingerprints at the bottom of the cloud which were not cleaned before digitalization. Should we remove that too? Yann (talk) 05:01, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):Did some more tweaking and contrast adjustment using layers. Centpacrr (talk) 19:39, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edit. There is even more noise now, and the image is really too dark. Sorry, Yann (talk) 20:25, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

@Yann: Well, you nearly say it yourself by being unsure how much "restauration" (or fake) is needed (for whom?): please don't overwrite - especially old, historic images with your own interpretations. --Saibo (Δ) 03:13, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't overwrite anything. There was no JPEG file for this document. I created it from the TIFF file. Please check the log before telling me that. Yann (talk) 07:37, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"I have tried to restore this old photo" and in fact you have uploaded restored versions on top of the first version. And also in the file description it is hardly visible that this file has another tiff as source - just the tiny text in the other versions gallery tells it. So please do not tell me that I should have seen that. :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 06:55, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rotate images in Category:Images requiring rotation

[edit]
Stale

Request: Hi guys! As you all have noticed the RotateLink gadget is active per default for all logged-in users. Primarily to request rotation by bot (90, 180, 270°) but it is also possible to request other degree values. Those images for manual processing are sorted into Category:Images requiring rotation. Also images which had an error when the bot tried to process them are sorted into this category. It would be nice if some of you could help to clean out this category every now and then. Currently there are 6 images waiting for processing.

If you notice bot errors please report them at User talk:Rotatebot or write me in IRC.

Thank you for your help! Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:52, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's not the "right" area, but the right area is not used anymore, so I think it's ok :) Anyway, I've notice some severe posterization in the upper left sky which is a bit distracting.
