Per COM:SCOPE -> self-created artwork; unlikely to be used in a project. Takeaway (talk) 09:11, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Unlikely to be used perhaps unless the project is about; (1) the relationship between science and art, (2) the nature of size and perspectives, (3) the creative process in science (and art), or (4) how different everyday objects appear thorough the microscope. I expect you could think of more; but, these were just a few examples I came up with immediately.
This and the other one tagged (Winter night) were part of a series of images that covered the spectrum of these concepts. Starting with how a well-known substance (vitamin C) can look when view through a microscope using a specific technique (polarized light) to how that technique not only provides interesting images, but also the means to assess quantitatively tissue architecture to then imagining how all of this could come together to create something new. - PW31 (talk) 17:41, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Please read COM:NOTUSED and also the examples mentioned directly below that. Seeing how the file description mentions "Exposing the film multiple times to different objects (dust, crystals) using polarized light can create microscopic landscapes.", it can only be viewed as deliberate "artwork", and not, like most of your other uploads , as a scientific image which could be viewed (by chance) as being an artwork. - Takeaway (talk) 17:51, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- I'd prefer to keep this image as a good example of scientific art made through microscopy. It's likely that there are very few images of this type under free licenses, and this image would be good to have on Commons as an educational example of such art. Per COM:SCOPE -> self-created artwork; unlikely to be used in a project. Takeaway (talk) 09:13, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
This and the other one tagged (desert rideg) were part of a series of images that covered the spectrum of these concepts. Starting with how a well-known substance (vitamin C) can look when view through a microscope using a specific technique (polarized light) to how that technique not only provides interesting images, but also the means to assess quantitatively tissue architecture to then imagining how all of this could come together to create something new. PW31 (talk) 17:50, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps it would have been a better idea to have had this categorised elsewhere than in its original Category:Landscapes. As it was where I had found it, I could only assume that it was meant as "self-created artwork". If the file description had been less artistic and more scientific, it could have been categorised elsewhere and if and when such articles as you mentioned here above would be created, this image might be found, amongst other scientific images, to be good illustrations of the article subjects. But one can now not know how this image was created as it isn't mentioned at all. It could indeed be similar to what you did with Commons:Deletion requests/File:Desert ridge on a distant planet.jpg; i.e. being a deliberate artwork. - Takeaway (talk) 18:13, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Thank you both for those suggestions. I will indeed expand the file descriptions and use other categories too.

[edit]The blog owner of flowergarden522.tistory.com is committing license laundering. Just in this post alone (when looking at the license reviews for photos from the 17th Mnet Asian Music Awards), images are watermarked by various authors, including "Overboard for Exo-K Suho", "바람의꽃이되어서 Only For Sehun", "Suho Point", "moonminhyun9192", "Stellar Star Hong Kong", "Suho Taiwan", etc. A look through other posts on the blog show the exame same pattern, with watermarks to even more different authors. These images are not acceptable.

- I've done my best to keep my comments to you civil, collegial, and confined to issues of policy. I think I succeeded.
I considered reporting you for vandalism at the Administrator's noticeboard, because you tried to delete this image so I can't use it in an article I am working. In other discussions I had posed you good faith, civil, collegial questions, and, rather than either try to explain yourself, or admit your couldn't explain your position, you reacted with snide angry comments. [2], [3]
This is not the only discussion where you have sarcastically repeated the phrase "Good luck with that article." You wrote below that while you know my plans to make use of this image on a wikipedia article, but I don't know your plans.
First, given your sarcastic and evasive comments in previous discussions I thought it was obvious you were threatening to use the wikipedia nomination for deletion as soon as I moved my draft of the sexy librarian article to the wikipedia's article space. Second, if there are any genuine doubts about the subtlety of your position on this and other related images, and the Category:Sexy librarian meme, surely that is because you chose not respond to my good faith requests for you to explain yourself?
There is a principle that is supposed to be true for the Commons and all other WMF projects -- we are not supposed to be trying to win arguments, at all costs. We are supposed to be engaging in discussions as to what is best for the project. If we are engaged in a discussion with someone we recognize has made a valid point, but who isn't fluent in our language, or who otherwise hasn't explained their position clearly, we are not supposed to use cheap rhetorical tricks, or otherwise keep arguing with them, because we think we can exploit our greater ability to explain ourselves to avoid admitting they were right and we were wrong.
You refused to explain why you regarded a partygoer dressed as "sexy librarian" character as in scope at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sexy librarian Halloween costume (287390750).jpg or Commons:Deletion requests/File:Licking (287390923).jpg. At Commons:Categories for discussion/2017/11/Category:Sexy librarian meme you called these images out of scope, as if it were obvious, again without making the slightest good faith effort to explain why you consider them out of scope. Geo Swan (talk) 14:55, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

- (To Jeff again :) Jeff, you already understood what I mean; but still let me say a few words more so that more people understand me better. Sometimes you just open a file to discussion. Of course it may imply a "pre-conception" of an intention to delete. But you may also only wish to learn the opinions of others. There are many examples of such DRs, several are mine. When you open a discussion saying "this looks out of scope to me, what do you think?" it implies you yourself no dot have a clear opinion (or "vote", see the following) as regards. You may (or may not) produce/formulate one later. OTOH, what we call "vote" here is not a "vote" as we conceive the word in daily life. (We don't need "that kind of votes" here. We're not electing deputies or President.) Here votes are "opinions". Those opinions have no reason to be frozen or dead. They develop within the discussion process. See an example here: Commons:Deletion requests/File:FMoPA at night Front Page website.jpg. (Nobody told me I could not use two votes! there... :) --E4024 (talk) 08:06, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

- I see no reason to say that; this isn't INeverCry's standard approach. I don't believe this statement, given the incorrect infinitive, the extraneous possessive, and the incorrect capitalisation, but at this point it doesn't matter. Also, don't unstrike invalid votes. Nyttend (talk) 12:48, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

- Keep I uploaded this image. Note: nominator E4024 was well aware of my plans to use this image to illustrate wikipedia coverage of the stereotype of the sexy librarian. I think this makes their decision to nominate this image for deletion very hard to explain.
- To be in scope an image doesn't actually have to be in use, it merely has to be of potential use. I think that this image is of potential use in article space, whether I complete my draft, or if the topic of the sexy librarian merely gets some coverage in a library related article. Geo Swan (talk) 03:53, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- I may be aware of your declared plans but you are not aware of mine, as I have not declared them yet. Until your draft is accepted as an article, it does not bring any "scope" to OoS files. Good luck with that article. --E4024 (talk) 13:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- The first COM:INUSE reference to userspace is talking about images on userpages; the context is people adding badly out-of-scope images to their other-project userpages merely to save them from being deleted. Images in use in a good-faith draft are quite different; they shouldn't be deleted unless they have problems bigger than SCOPE. Nyttend (talk) 06:38, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

- Comment I think it would be good practice to prepend a DR reason with {{Cmt}} if one does not want to delete at the moment of DR creation, but does want a discussion. This would make the DR more akin to enwiki's "Files for Discussion". — Jeff G. ツ 13:09, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

So, at the least, any of the (apparently significant) new material that appeared in the version 2.5 manual is copyrighted, whether or not an older version of the manual might have escaped copyright. --Closeapple (talk) 00:20, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

[edit]There is a language barrier here, but the description reads: "Das Material besteht aus Videomaterial von Sebastian Senftleben " (Google Translate: "The material consists of video material by Sebastian Senftleben"). The YouTube channel's name is Thorsten Doil. Who is Sebastian Senftleben, and did he release his material under a free license? Where? Does Thorsten Doil have the authority to release this under a Creative Commons license? There is an array of videos on this channel's upload page from various sources and, oddly, this is the only upload under a Creative Commons license. This casts doubt over the licensing. ℯxplicit 08:21, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

(I recommend reviewing especially the last ones in this list if you don't have time to review each of them.) This casts a serious doubt to the attribution of the rest of the images as own work, which IMO is enough to delete them unless the user returns to clarify the source. In addition, some of these are also very low quality images, which suggests they are not originals.
One more image is already requested for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Pablo Lopez actual dt de Malvin.jpg, so I do not include it in this request.

unused low-quality photo, plenty of superior photos of birthday cakes/candles available. Jon Kolbert (talk) 11:55, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Keep
- Being unused is not grounds for deletion, if an image is in scope.
- Nomination "claims we have "plenty of superior photos of birthday cakes/candles available."
- Which policy document sets a maximum number of images, per topic? We have thousands of images of iconic landmarks, like the Statue of Liberty.
- Category:Birthday cakes contains about 400 images. I looked at the first 200. About a dozen other images show the birthday person in the act of blowing out their candles in a darkened room. I would be surprised if nominator was able to defend the claim that we have "plenty" of images of a birthday person in the act of blowing out their candles in a darkened room.
- I would also be surprised if they could explain how the other images of a birthday person in the act of blowing out their candles in a darkened room were superior to this image. Geo Swan (talk) 22:11, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think the following images are superior to the image nominated for deletion here. Geo Swan (talk) 23:22, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Delete Delete per nom. If those files are not better, they also should be deleted. I will nominate a couple of them for deletion. --E4024 (talk) 07:11, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- E4024 did nominate File:Birthday 2011.jpg for deletion. I left an explanation there of how a host prepares birthday candles for the birthday boy or birthday girl to blow out. E4024 witmhdrew their delete after reading that explanation, so I will include it here, too:
- The cake is prepared with candles out of sight of the birthday boy or girl. If possible the host lights one candle for every year of their age.
- The lights in the room where the birthday is being celebrated are turned off.
- When the host enters with the cake with the candles blazing other celebrants start singing happy birthday.
- The host sets the cake in front of the birthday boy or girl.
- Celebrants encourage them to "make a wish", and they then try to blow out all candles with one breath. By convention, if they fail, they cannot expect their wish to come true.
- This photo was taken in a darkened room correctly reflecting the tradition that the candles are emphasized by turning off the lights when they are lit.
- This is one of the relatively few images we have that capture the birthday boy or girl in the act of blowing out the candles, so it is certainly in scope.
- I consider it a strong possibility that our nominator was also unaware of why birthday candles are blown out in darkened rooms, so does not understand why this photo was taken in a darkened room. Geo Swan (talk) 17:56, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Keep: I will use this image in a project. The original commenting user seems to be trying to invoke the 'Not educationally useful' or 'Self-promotion' policies listed under 'Out of scope.' Just because the original commenting user would not use this image does not mean that someone else, including myself, will not use it. Wheresteddy (talk)
In that case, please categorize your images better. There is no categorization at all nor is there a thoughtful or thorough description. Those lead one to think this is simply an image uploaded for personal use. If it's a personal photo that is from an established contributor that is perfectly fine, but without it being in use, lacking any categorization and a description that simply leads one to think this is a personal image that doesn't quality for COM:INUSE. These are things that could be improved upon in the future to keep an image from being nominated for deletion simply for unused personal photo. -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 19:11, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

No evidence that this photo was ever published in Italy, Ethiopia, or Sweden and was in the public domain in these countries on the URAA date. Indy beetle (talk) 17:54, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- If "published" means made available to other press agencies abroad, it was published in Italy. If it was published in Sweden is irrelevant. {{PD-Sweden-photo}} applies to photos taken in Sweden, not photos published in Sweden. /ℇsquilo 19:34, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- If the file was made available by an Italian agency at the time, I'd think it also was used (published) in Italy. And if it was created for commercial purpose in Abyssinia it was probably published there. Those should have been the two countries most interested in the conflict. The only reason for not publishing the photo would have been it not being available for publishing by the press (I suppose there was not redundant availability of such photos). --LPfi (talk) 08:58, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
- The photo is fine, you might close this Deletion requests--Tahurus (talk) 21:20, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Delete per COM:PRP.There is too much uncertainly of provenance and publication history. No actual evidence of who the initial license-holder was (talkpage is full of "if"s and intermediate brokers), so if "publication" means sale to press/news agencies, we don't know the country of origin (important for determining whose PD laws might matter). More importantly, no actual evidence of it being published at that time (vs pure supposition of what else might have been available, whether the whole (uncropped) image actually was actually distributed and used in print (not just had available), etc.). DMacks (talk) 13:11, 23 August 2017 (UTC)- A clear and unambiguous definition of "published" is needed. Obviously, DMacks definition differs from mine. Published does not necessarily mean printed in daily press. /ℇsquilo 13:24, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think it needs to get as far as printing, but it needs to get out of the image library of the original owner. Publication usually does include transfer from the original owner to another (even to a secondary press agency, etc.), which is why knowing the identity (or at least nationality) of the original owner matters. See Commons:Publication. DMacks (talk) 13:32, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Looking more closely now that I have time, I have not been able to find any further information about this image (other publications with it that have authorship or wider view with a copyright statement in the margin/back, etc). That does (as we all seem to agree) make it "actual author unknown". I could see it being {{PD-EU-no author disclosure}}, but we need to be pretty sure it was actually published back then and where. We know it was created before 1976, but not that it was published first in Italy and not also published in the US within 30 days (see {{PD-italy}} and Template:PD-italy/US notes...image may need to meet all not just any one of different laws). DMacks (talk) 02:55, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Keep The photo is public in both italy and Ethiopia and it is 1936 so 81 years old was used in Ethiopia and Italy frequently because the author is unknown, it's free--Tahurus (talk) 23:52, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- "was used in Ethiopia and Italy frequently"--what matters is when it was first given to someone, not how often or where later. I don't feel we have strong evidence that it was published 81 years ago. What is your basis for declaring "was used in Ethiopia and Italy frequently"? DMacks (talk) 02:55, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Keep DMacks The image https://abyssiniancrisis.wordpress.com/2015/11/17/ethiopian-army/ was used by sports and general press agency, located in Fleet Street, London but many of their archives were destroyed in a 1941 bombing raid.
- So it is without copyright that have passed more than 80 years--Tahurus (talk) 10:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for that additional bit of info. That would make it PD-old. DMacks (talk) 16:16, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Kept: per DMacks, in 1936-1941 Ethiopia was an Italian colony, so Italian law applies. Ruthven (msg) 08:04, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
Renominating for deletion. Previous argument still stands undressed: There is no reliable evidence that this photo was ever published in Italy, Ethiopia, or Sweden and was in the public domain in these countries on the URAA date, only speculation and wishful thinking (we have no date of it being published or in what medium). Also, the fact that it "was used by sports and general press agency, located in Fleet Street, London but many of their archives were destroyed in a 1941 bombing raid" (quoting previous deletion discussion) doesn't help, because. Note that here it is stated that Alpha Photo Press Ltd owns the rights of the Sport and General Archive. So just because the S&G was mostly destroyed in 1941 doesn't mean the copyright disappeared. And just because a print of the photo was sold on Ebay doesn't mean the rights were also transferred. Indy beetle (talk) 20:39, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Keep PD-Italy considers photos taken on Italian soil, it doesn't matter where it has been published (GB, Sweden or US). It was PD in 1996, so it was in the public domain on the URAA date. --Ruthven (msg) 18:38, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
Kept, the photo is created in Ethiopia in 1936. That year Ethiopia became part of Italy. Either Italian or Ethiopian law applies. If we apply Italian law, then copyright lasts 20 years from creation and the photo is in PD since 1957, no publication data is needed. If we apply Ethiopian law, then 25 years from creation or publication, whichever latest, that means on worst case 50 years from creation is needed and the photo is in PD since 1987 (probably earlier). Both cases publication data is not needed at all and both cases the photo is in PD on URAA date. Taivo (talk) 14:16, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Nominating again (I just realized) because there is consistent failure to match this photo with appropriate PD tags or otherwise demonstrate that it is PD. There is no proof the photo was taken by an Italian, taken in an Italian jurisdiction (These are armed, mounted Ethiopian soldiers serving on behalf of the Ethiopian Empire, which was recognised as a sovereign nation as of 1936. For this photo to have been physically possible, these troops would have been posing /before/ the country was occupied by Italy. How can it be argued that this photo originated in an Italian jurisdiction, then?) or /first published/ in an Italian jurisdiction. The source is a Swedish Press Agency. -Indy beetle (talk) 03:49, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- It does not matter if Ethiopian, Italian or Swedish jurisdiction is applied, the photo is still free in all of them. /ℇsquilo 08:48, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Esquilo: How so? Place of being first published and the date of that publishing matters. This strategy of throwing enough shit at the wall and hoping some of its sticks in regards to conflicting licensing schemes is not how this is supposed to work. -Indy beetle (talk) 17:04, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
- No, all of the shit sticks to the wall because the licensing schemes are NOT conflicting. /ℇsquilo 05:40, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
- I guess it's possible that it is mis-tagged as to the place of original publication. Having an incorrect pub-location tag is definitely a technical mistake, but I don't think that it is itself a reason for deletion. I take ℇsquilo's point to be that no matter which of the proposed places of original publication is correct, it meets the criteria for being freee in that place. That is, "it's from A or B or C and maybe we aren't even sure which" but "if it's from A it's free by A's rules; if it's from B it's free by B's rules; etc.". If there is no "not free" path, then I don't see how it's deletable on license grounds. DMacks (talk) 06:39, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DMacks: I think you're missing how this is exactly the problem. Yes, if it was published in Italy in 1936 it would meet the criteria for being PD. If it was published in Ethiopian or Swedish jurisdiction it would be PD. Zero proof was been provided that it was actually published in any of these specific jurisdictions (being photographed at a certain date and being published are two different things, for one). Has a news article from 1936 with the photo been produced to show it was published? No. Has a note from the archive that affirms when and where it was first published been produced? No. By this standard, we should all feel free to go grab old photos off the internet and add a hodgepodge of licensing permissions for countries with more lenient terms and say "Well, if it was published in country X or Y at this certain date than its in the PD. But we don't need proof that it was actually first published in X or Y at this date." I suspect this is exactly how this photo got uploaded. -Indy beetle (talk) 06:21, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- Well, that is exactly how the copyright law works in many countries, Sweden for example. It does not matter when it was published or if it was published at all. It is only the time it was taken that matters. /ℇsquilo 09:58, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, but then was it PD by the URAA date? Because if not it's not PD in the US and then cannot be on Commons. -Indy beetle (talk) 02:17, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- Taivo already noted it would be PD prior to URAA for either country-of-origin's laws. DMacks (talk) 02:31, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, but then was it PD by the URAA date? Because if not it's not PD in the US and then cannot be on Commons. -Indy beetle (talk) 02:17, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

IMHO this 1980 Soviet Union work is not in Public Domain! The licence says:
- This non-U.S. work was published in 1923 or later, but is in the public domain in the United States because it was simultaneously published (within 30 days) in the U.S. and in its source country and is in the public domain in the U.S. as a U.S. work (no copyright registered, or not renewed).
Therefor we need proofs. It was simultaneously published in the U.S. and the Soviet Union? Whereto? Cuba and the United States are enraged opponents, very questionable. An additional rationale is:
- Photo was created to show the general public the crew of the Soyuz 38 mission. It was not intended to be copyrighted. It was created in a communist county. Photo is older than 1996.
With this reason we could upload many old soviet space photos. I don't believe that this is valid. --Ras67 (talk) 15:28, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Keep — Well, I for one remember that Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez's picture was in the news. He was the first Black person in space, after all. It is perfectly believable that it was published in the US within 30 days. By the way, have you ever heard of "enraged opponents" publishing propaganda to make themselves look better than the other country? Ras, Soviet space triumphs and tragedies were widely reported in the US and other Western countries. I remember news about Sigmund Jähn's flight, too, the first German in space. - Even when it should be Public Domain in the US, it is not PD in the Soviet Union resp. Russia. But this is the requirement for Commons. --Ras67 (talk) 12:43, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Deleted, no evidence, that the photo was ever published in US before upload into Commons, and it's copyrighted in Russia anyway. Taivo (talk) 16:14, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Lower-resolution duplicate of File:Olymische_Sommerspiele_2004_Moderner_Fuenfkampf.jpg. However, this file has a somewhat better description, and the other has a misspelling in the filename. So some kind of merger would be preferable: would it be OK to upload the higher-res file over this one, just changing the source URL, then delete the former? —Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:48, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Deleted, OK, I'll merge the photos. Taivo (talk) 18:27, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Derivative work of the prior deleted Igla docking system antennas.jpg. Ras67 (talk) 16:40, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Il me semble que le dessin d'origine figure dans un document de la NASA et a été produit en licence libre. Il faut que je le retrouve. --Pline (talk) 17:38, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Something like this (server is down) http://ston.jsc.nasa.gov/collections/TRS/_techrep/RP1357.pdf --Pline (talk) 17:43, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- It is indeed a derivative work of RP1357 p64 Salyut 1.svg which is a free NASA work. I don't know, if the modifications are below the threshold of originality so that we keep this file with a NASA licence. Should be MarcRic itself the crator of this modifications we have a licence from him. Additionally an administrator could examine if the original is also eligible for Commons. --Ras67 (talk) 18:17, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

DR started to verify claimed 'own work' : rather small-sized format, but also missing EXIF data to verify origin and claimed 'own work', hence, potentially non-free content - your opinions ? Roland zh (talk) 20:16, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

No proof the photo was published in Iraq, therefore making the license invalid. Indy beetle (talk) 20:50, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Invalid licensing information. The image is a logo of an organisation, and is thus subject to copyright. The statement "This representation of a coat of arms is potentially different from the one used by the armiger (municipality or organisation) in question" is off topic. K.e.coffman (talk) 00:51, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- The image is not the logo of the organisation. It is an independent interpretation (by my) of the organisations oficial Blazon (I blått ett stolpvis ställt svärd överlagt en vase allt av guld.). Please see COM:COA. /Lokal_Profil 08:34, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- I don't believe that COM:COA applies; the image is presented as belonging to the organisation. I could redraw the Deutsche Bank logo, for example, and claim it for myself. It would still belong to Deutsche Bank. K.e.coffman (talk) 02:19, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- If the Deutsche Bank has a Blazon and you redraw it yourself, or as in this case, combines freely licensed resources, it would not be their copyright. There is no copyright on ideas, it is the actual representation that gets copyright. You are also wrong when you say "the image is presented as belonging to the organisation", it is only presented as the coat of arms of the organisation. Ainali (talk) 09:27, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- All COA'S aside, Deutsche Bank owning the copyright shouldn't be a theory it should be a legal fact. Deutsche Bank owns this or they don't. What am I not seeing here? -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 00:42, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- It's the difference between the idea (non-copyrightable) and the execution (copyrightable). A blazon falls in the first category whereas a the drawn coat of arms falls in the second. In this case the blazon is constructed by the organisation but the drawing is constructed by me. The difference to the Deutsche Bank example is that for a logo there is no variation allowed in how it is drawn, so any image will be a copy. By contrast blazons are designed to be unspecific som any coat of arms independently drawn from it will end up being different. Again COM:COA explains all of this. /Lokal_Profil 09:14, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Lokal Profil: I've thought about this and reread COA several times. I'm leaning towards voting keep but one line of COA I can't get past A representation drawn to represent a description containing non-geometric shapes is copyrightable. Yet if this was never under copyright, copyright was never defended (I don't know how Swedish laws compare to American though) or it is not copyrightable in the first place there is no issue. I really don't think this is simple geometric shapes so this needs to be cleared up by someone with a more meticulous knowledge of the subject IMO. -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 17:42, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Sixflashphoto: I read the same quote differently. Rephrased it becomes "the representation of a description is copyrightable". I.e. the actual image (both that drawn by me and the one used by the organisation) are copyrightable, BUT if they are both only based on the description then one isn't a derivative work of the other.
- This is why we for Swedish Coat of Arms cannot just upload the image of the arms used by the organisation, but instead have to draw a new one based only on the description. /Lokal_Profil 20:38, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
- Keep @Lokal Profil: You're right. Public domain definition (blazon) does clarify this. Also you're from Sweden and you have made many of these. I looked to see if I could find an old DR of something like this that was closed as keep for some additional context but couldn't find one. A representation drawn to faithfully depict a geometric specification of an emblem (a definition) is not copyrightable. It is a bit confusing but I've thought about this one emblem more than any middle aged man from Ohio should and I really think this is an easy keep now. It's either a Keep or I could see commons having a mass ridiculous DR spree one day. -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 01:35, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
