File uploaded by a new user, who doesn't claim to be the author; licensing is given as "This is a public headshot of a major political figure", suggesting that the uploader believes that this makes it PD. A Google search for the image turns up several copies, all at petericketts.com; I don't find any indication there that the photo's been released for free use. I suspect that this is an inadvertent copyvio by a user unfamiliar with copyright laws and WP restrictions. Ammodramus (talk) 05:57, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After today identifying around 10 uploads as copyvio it´s difficult to believe that these remaining files would be own work: IMHO untrusted user uploading a bunch of copyrighted material (small/inconsistent resolutions, missing exif) so these ones (per COM:PRP) can't be believed either. All files related to pt:Arouca, a town and a municipality in Portugal. Despite File:A Vila de Arouca (Área Metropolitana do Porto).jpg, all other files are maps (more or less complex), most likely all grabbed from Internet, like File:AROUCA-Entre-Douro-e-Vouga - Área Metropolitana do Porto (Região do Norte).jpg, taken somewhere from http://www.cm-arouca.pt/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=113&Itemid=195 (© Câmara Municipal de Arouca) = http://www.cm-arouca.pt/portal/images/stories/nutiii.jpg (last modified: 2006). They may be in public domain but relevant info must be provided.

Such a file was already uploaded by this user on October 21st and deleted on October 23rd because it was a copyvio from Flickr (see here). It doesn't look to be exactly the same file though, but the metadata indicates a different camera than this user's other upload. It might be right, but with such a history it doesn't look right to me. Gyrostat (talk) 11:04, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This user's other upload is a copyvio from flickr, that may explain the different camera in the metadata. But it's still a different camera than this file, which I can't find on google but on Commons... I wonder if any of those files are really 'Own work'. This image has been around the internet for quite some time (at least since 2009 [6]) before it was uploaded here. Tineye finds about 1200 matches, Google about 1000. It is a web-resolution file with missing EXIF data and the uploader's only contribution globally. Hence, I have serious doubts about the claim of "own work". Those files do not like "own work" (as claimed) at all, rather like scans. They mostly show a man who lived 1902 to 1979, so they are not old enough to be assumed to be in the PD. They should therefore be deleted per the precautionary principle.

Files uploaded by Andershus

[edit]

All these files were uploaded by User:Andershus. They appear to be photographs of works that are shown in his gallery, but these works were made by artists that are either living, either dead too recently for the works to be public domain in any jurisdiction. All files are tagged as "own work" which is clearly incorrect. I contacted the user on his talk page on the french Wikipedia and asked him to clarify the copyright status of these works but got no answer, even though he kept editing. IMO, these 31 files should be deleted as copyright violations, and the user doesn't appear to care much about the matter.

File:Anju-Chaudhuri.jpg uploaded by the same user, was already nominated for deletion two days ago.

No indication of user's own work on these images of Art in India. If the photos (some of them only) were own work, they would still be COM:COPYVIOs because they are images of artwork without the permission of the creator, or any indication who created them. Some images such as File:Harsh-raman(1).jpg clearly show they were taken by someone else, One of the images is large enough to be considered "big" and most are smaller than facebook.

Derivative work of a derivative work, cannot ascertain copyright of the creator of the poster nor the image used as a basis for its creation. KTo288 (talk) 20:21, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@User:Signedzzz copyright is exactly what we concern ourselves with here, please read. Commons:Derivative works.--KTo288 (talk) 00:42, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, any publication in the world could use this photo without any copyright issues. Are you seriously suggesting the image of the poster in the middle would need to be "pixellated"? The photo is of people in a public street gathered round the poster. What if it was a film poster, or a shop front with a display, for example - would you object then? Or a banner stuck to a wall - do we need to find who made it and get written permission if it happens to appear in a photo? What if the banner contained another banner? This objection is patent nonsense. Signedzzz (talk) 13:17, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Posters, since the poster is the focus of the file Commons:De minimis cannot be argued.--KTo288 (talk) 22:41, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Signedzzz, my objection expressed on Wikipedia still stands, actually. STSC (talk) 19:11, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Hong_Kong reads, "OK for 3D works, not always for 2D...Therefore freedom given in Sect 71 does not apply to posters or maps in public places." and that , "object is permanently situated in a public place or in premises open to the public". This work is 2d and cannot be said to be permanent. As far as I can see from the link you've given, the amendment to the law now allows for fair use of copyrighted material to satirise and comment, that's fine for what it is but re Commons:Fair use, "Fair use" not allowed on Commons".--KTo288 (talk) 07:36, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, this is not a voting excercise. STSC (talk) 17:17, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete At best, this is a fair use photographic reproduction of a photoshopped image based on a copyrighted photo of Xi Jinping holding an umbrella [7]. Since Commons does not and cannot host fair use images, there isn't much to discuss. Underbar dk (talk) 21:05, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep if Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Hong_Kong say not always for 2D, therefore all these photos in this category should be delete [8] It will make more users criticized. In Umbrella Revoution, artwork is one of the major contribution inside this movement, we should not want to censor the issue and ignore it. If this picture "Fair use" in Wikipedia, there are some administrator will also use different reasons to ask for DR as soon as possible and suggest this picture move to commons upload again. I want to say that there only few people participate in Wikipedia now, esp in Hong Kong, it is because some people follow these non-sense rules in Commons/Wikipedia, but without any consider the situation in nowadays. So Wikipedia become less useful and attractive and get more criticized from users.--Wing1990hk (talk) 01:51, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep this photo. We will be criticised as "self-censoring" if this photo is deleted. We cannot allow acts of "self-censorship", otherwise the reputation of Wikimedia Foundation will be destroyed. So far, the photos of different banners are distributed on the Internet, without being warned about copyright issues. If the act of uploading the photos of banners violated the copyright, whoever uploaded the photos would have been warned a few weeks ago. Furthermore, this photo is taken by the one who uploads this photo.--Tony YKS (talk), 9:30PM, 8/11/2014 (HKT)
Wikimedia Commons cannot accept images based on copyrighted materials due to legal reasons. It's not "self-censorship". STSC (talk) 02:08, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep this photo. All the non-sense rules in Commons/Wikipedia, like saying "fair-use is not allowed in Commons/Wikipedia" without any consider the situation in nowadays, are just self-censoring in fact. Commons is part of wikipedia -- those who wanna delete it will deny it, but it is the truth in the opinion of normal editors. --Tvb10data (talk) 08:33, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Obscure rules about the copyright of this poster are going to remove a picture of it from the Commons? Absurd. Work for the good of the world, not for petty laws. RGloucester (talk) 15:03, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete as (now-)unused and low quality. I could envision a use for this mixed-style diagram (emphasizing one of the acidic hydrogens), but this image has so many other details (unrelated and not required) and poor overall resolution, etc. that this aspect might be obscured. Undescribed pictures

[edit]

Unused and undescribed image with no obvious educative Value. Richard Avery (talk) 14:28, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Files concerned:

  • Could be in scope.. These two photographies are a part of a set, if we look at all the contributor uploads. This set seems to show what you can do with an extruder, a 3D printer or other creation techniques. With Richard Avery, I note the descriptions don't give any immediate obvious educative value. But I beg to differ to the lack of scope: these pictures show how in the years 2010s we can create prototypes of objects. --Dereckson (talk) 21:36, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unused and poor quality shot of mine and of a subject that is available at Commons with much higher quality. Me, als author, request its deletion. Poco2 18:39, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Last Year I startet to make up illustrated books for children.

This is possible only for the bird species with very much photos, and in doing this, I noticed, that the masses of photos which looked very similar to me before are not enough and that in many cases I don't find the photos I am searching for. In some cases the format of the picture is not good, in others I need a special color of the water - really - sometimes it is some kind of behavior, but the masses of photos I couldn't discern before don't seem enough to me, when I start to search for the right photo for the next scene in the book. You never know, what someone is searching for. So please don't delete photos like this one in a species with much less photos than in the galleries for the species I made books of! This file was initially tagged by Psychonaut as Copyvio (copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: The uploader's claim that "All historical atlases printed in Serbia and the former Yugoslavia, except Slovenia, can be used as GFDL." is simply preposterous and has no basis in reality. Unused unencyclopedic personal images outside our scope. My Gawd! There are so many of these. I have not nominated all images of this user. I have kept few which could be useful. But please go through the lot once to see something could be useful.

Please add comments below the gallery.

See Commons:Project Scope. In the case of these images, it's generally a case of the background is within scope, but the fact you have a few people hamming it up for the camera takes it out of scope. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:49, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think all photos are in the range of scope and as for the photos I took, I can assure you that there is no personality issue. If it is mandatory to give clear evidence for every photo, how can we maintain rich source of contribution? below file are much important and I think it is clear in the scope. First one shows the ceremonial dress of korea firefighter, second is about the person who is my great-grandfather and he is on the korean wikipedia now, which also shows no problem relevant to copyright as I wrote in the explaination section.

These are apparently copyrighted buildings in South Korea, where there is no commercial freedom of panorama. Buildings do not seem to have been built more than 70 years ago, or authored by architects who died more than 70 years ago, to satisfy public domain status. Relevent commercial license permissions from architects of the nominated buildinga here, or their heirs if they are already dead, are required. Note: the user has uploaded tons of Korean buildings, some review is also needed for other buildings shared by this user as well.

This new template is often used in the Author field of the information template and thus clutters this important field with semi-important information concerning the validity of the SVG code and the software used to create the file (examples). The latter information may be placed elsewhere without this template. Leyo 23:04, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep AFAIK it is an accepted consense that each SVG image should be tagged by which of the many tools it has been drawn, and whether it is W3C-valid or not.
Tagging the validation info within the tool info allows a better category diffusion, most of the two main categories are heavily overcrowded. {{Uf}} garantees this diffusion.
It can be discussed where to use the template, whether in the Author field, somewhere else in the {{Information}} block e.g. in the Source field, or outside of it. Of course {{Uf}} can be used without user (parameter #1), and elsewhere in the file description page. There are examples of the different possibilities, the three links above show only when it is used in the |Author= row. I agree that the Source field may be better to give the info about validity & tool, and an own {{Information field}} may be sometimes the best solution.
Some people like the possibility to express three facts in one line. Some other people do not like the boxes in the |Author= row. AFAIK there is currently no final consense about the usage of this field and what it has to contain or should not contain; very often it is crowded with file derivate & history information.
Another thing (not concerning this delete request) is the too dominant appearance of the W3C boxes. IMHO the validity is an essential but a rather less important property of a drawing, well suited for category diffusion. I would like it more when the boxes were as decent as the tool boxes, and I am going to discuss it with others whether/how we should alter that.
I would appreciate some suggestions (and a consent, too) how to express file informations. Ideas for better solutions are welcome! sarang사랑 08:13, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral Information on SVG details is definitely wrong in the author field. By the way: what does "Uf" stand for? --тнояsтеn 08:27, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Although not yet assigned, please reserve two-letter-code templates for use as language identifiers. Also, what is the meaning of Uf? -- Rillke(q?) 09:06, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Having these boxes in the Source field is unacceptable, either. The only field inside of the information template is Other fields. Hence, the combination of the author and the boxes on validity and creation is not useful anywhere. BTW: There is no harm in placing these boxes outside of the information template. --Leyo 09:13, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral Removing the template from all files and delete? The usage in the author field is not okay. --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:18, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Author field should be machine-readable, in this case it is okay (for example). --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:21, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Comment O.K., then we will need a bot run changing the {{Uf}} to {{U}}, and moving the Uf-Information to a new-named template at another location. Any suggestions about the name? Of course the more talkative format can be used instead of the Uf-shorthand notation if that seems better, as {{Created with Adobe Illustrator|v|vstyle=float:left}} - no problem for a bot.
@Leyo: So the layout in Flag of Cluses.svg is accecptable? sarang사랑 10:06, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, yes. --Túrelio (talk) 22:41, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The layout yes, but not the code. Technically, there is still a bunch of inappropriate information in the Author field. --Leyo 13:00, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The tool for machine reading the informations cannot be adjusted to handle things like that?
Separating this information from the Author field is possible by introducing Other fields, but then the inserted information is shown after the Permission field whose content is often extremly large. A solution like there will destroy the machine readablity of Permission which sure is as well inappropriate? sarang사랑 07:57, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Users with high technical skill like Tgr, Jarekt or Rillke will be able to answer your questions more appropriately. --Leyo 14:20, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think putting stuff into Other fields could harm the machine-readability of other stuff. Both the final and the previous version of Flag of Cluses.svg and the version seems fine to me. --Tgr (WMF) (talk) 12:35, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Abstain , one common template for all created with cases could be very attractive instead of the current zoo of one (or more, shudder) templates per tool. But {{Uf}} initially didn't work for me (now apparently fixed), my second attempt (with the at this time still insufficient template) was reverted, and after that I gave up on it. IOW, maybe this template should be renamed, and a bot could upgrade clear cases of the old zoo to this new unified thingy. –Be..anyone (talk) 12:56, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep the template, but rename it to something like created with .... I really dislike 1,2,3 - letter templates (other than language templates and long established ones). Placement of the template should be in "other fields" section or after the infobox template. I would not be removing it from "description" fields but "Author" or "source" fields are definitely a wrong place for them. --Jarekt (talk) 16:24, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Other name
should express that it tags about validation & tool; how about [Created with ]SVG tool, or something shorter like Svgvt or SVGv&t? -- sarang사랑
What about SVG created with or alike? --Leyo 07:29, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Folks (= me) have to type this, so if three letters are too short how about four, {{Svgi}} is free. Redirected to a long official {{Svg info}}, or similar. And without the author/user option in {{Uf}}, the wikidata magic is based on unique XML id.s, only {{Information}} can create this id, otherwise "unique" won't fly. –Be..anyone (talk) 08:09, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Be..anyone, Template names should be long enough that someone reading them can figure out what they do. I can figure out what {{Map}} or {{Date}} do but I have no idea what {{A}}, {{C}}, {{E}}, {{F}}, {{I}}, {{L}}, {{M}}, {{N}}, {{O}}, {{P}}, {{Q}}, {{S}}, {{T}}, {{U}}, {{W}}, {{X}}, or {{Y}} do. So you save time on typing (did you try cut and paste approach) and everybody else has no idea what you wrote. --Jarekt (talk) 13:52, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But everybody else will see what such a template generates from the code. And many one-letter-names are not so riddles, e.g. “C” for category, “F” for file, “T” for template, “U” for user, “W” for Wikipedia - to mention the most_essential_for_daily_life ones. And more exotic others like L,M,I,A and so have a documentation if somebody really wants to know. In a nutshell: either you know a template, or you have to check its docu. sarang사랑
I like {{En}} etc., or {{Vk}}, and I wasn't aware that this is a known problem when I created an apparently missing {{Vs}} (actually a longer form exists, but uses another icon, therefore I didn't find it.) The general idea of {{Uf}} was "as short as possible", with a list of one-letter codes for the tools. I only stumbled over this beast inspired by an entry on my talk page about the templates with longer names, e.g., {{Created with CorelDRAW}}. –Be..anyone (talk) 14:13, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Let's return:
The tag(s) for validity & tool are in rare cases before the Information box (sometimes because of wrong usage of |Other fields=), most times between the I-box summary and the license, which is much better than preceding the I-box. But when v&t is seen rather as something somehow belonging to the file information, best would be an own labelled field in the I-box.
Using |Other fields= displays its contents after the permission, which can be such a long sermon that everything behind is outside of the first page. |Other fields 1= displays between description and source, a bit better but best would be between author and permission (or at the end of the I-box when permission is absent); this solution requires something similar like an |Other fields 2= implemented in the template {{Information}}.
Absolute optimum would be a solution like {{Location}}: the tempate defines validity&tool outside the Information box, and god or somebody else moves it then to a well defined position inside of the I-box and provides it with an appropriate label. Such a solution allows later adjustments without bot runs, and offers much better flexibility for future format changes than the more static use of the |Other fields.
In any case, the upload tools & pages should offer an item to be filled with v&t information when the file to be uploaded is a SVG. Not correct using this item inserts the new file in a maintenance category, so further action can occur. sarang사랑 19:00, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Other fields 1 was added two years ago by Jarekt. I don't know if there is a specific reason for not switching the order. --Leyo 20:11, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
May be the fix order was easy to implement. Not only in this case but also in general it can be an advantage if the order can be somehow controlled, e.g. with an additional parameter: |Other fields 1={{InFi|1=...|2=...|pos=+3}} {{InFi|1=...|2=...|pos=+2}}, or somehow otherwise. With {{InFi}} but without a preceding |Other fields= labelled table rows can even now be inserted everywhere in the I-box, but then they will belong to the last parameter, e.g. to |Author=.
Nevertheless and independent from that, or an |Other fields 2=, the possibilities for the "Location"-like solution should be checked. sarang사랑 07:34, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
New name
The template is useable not only for SVG files. Only for SVG it could indicate that the description of a SVG file is tagged, about validation & creation tool. IMHO this will be clearly expressed by a name like {{SVG tag}}. But if used also to indicate the creating tool for other files, and considering that {{Created with}} exists, something like {{Created}} may fit better.
Then change that, too, please, or rename it to User:Sarang/DWIM with an emphasis on Do What I Mean. If you really support "created with FFmpeg" (example) skipping the validator-link depending on the file extension, you're in trouble with KISS, POLA, and something about "real MW programmers use Scribunto (if PHP+Parsoid fail), not templates".[9]Be..anyone (talk) 09:04, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Leyo: The name SVG created with could be used - but its docu is now used for the unified SVG created with-documentation, which needs in advance to be altered against an other name; more, Uf and its successor is not only for SVG, so the new template name should be more general. As an abbreviation for many SVG created with... and Created with... templates, a name like the above proposed Created may be a good choice. If the commons community can agree, or find another consent name, we can continue. I made some remarks there. sarang사랑 10:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Created is too similar to creator templates and might thus get mixed up. Other opinions? --Leyo 12:34, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because it is about creation some similarity is difficult to avoid. As mentioned at Info-talk I am thinking about a parameter |Creation=, so the template name could be also "Creation", or "Creation with" if that is better. Of course "Creation with" can get mixed up with "Created with", which is never used directly but only by many templates. Of course it would be posssible to change the name of the very heavily used template (subtemplate, used by other templates) {{Created with}} to some other name...
Reducing it to tag only SVG files seems inopportune to me. When I think it over, "Creation with" somehow comprises all Created with ... templates including all SVG created with ... templates, that gives sense. Other opinions from others? sarang사랑 17:59, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After more brainstorming: {{Creation tag}}? Or simple (and a bit too general) {{File tag}}? Or split it into two stubs (with one subtemplate for both) like {{SVG tag}} :: {{Raster tag}}? Or longer, e.g. "SVG creation tag" or "SVG file creation tag" that even the people above can immediately tell from outside what the template might be for? The community may develop better ideas and decide. sarang사랑 17:11, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
{{File validity & creation}} is probably too long. {{File creation information}} is not shorter, either. --Leyo 01:36, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Against a too long template name a shortcut can help; like e.g. {{Adobe}} for {{Created with Adobe Illustrator}}. But we need also a label (parameter "name" for {{Information field}}) of a reasonable length. "File" seems somehow redundant, "Creation information" comprises what the template will care for. Sorry, no ideas, I am out of my wits -- sarang사랑 18:02, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
When not "creation", is "generation" better? Or something with "tool" like "Drawing tool" or "generating tool" may describe what's on.
So how about {{Image development}}, {{Graphic development}}, {{Drawing development}}, {{Image generation}} or {{Image creation}}? sarang사랑 08:36, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion on potentially adding a new parameter to Template:Information may only take place on Template talk:Information. (but no reaction there the last fortnight sarang사랑 26/11)
Concerning the new name of Template:Uf, I think “Image creation”, “Image generation” or alike would be fine. @Thgoiter, Rillke, Túrelio, Steinsplitter, Jarekt, and Be..anyone: What do you think? --Leyo 19:28, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: No general consensus to delete. Misuse of the template is not good reason to delete it. Stifle (talk) 12:23, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This file was initially tagged by Yann as no license (No license since). Well, there is a CC license, but this is unlikely own work as claimed. JuTa 20:30, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think this may be acceptable under {{PD-textlogo}}, but it needs a source, a date, and the right author. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:53, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
