User talk:WilyD
Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

I've seen your request at Commons talk:Licensing, and I'm trying to work my way through the argument. There has been a similar discussion at w:Template talk:PD-Australia which would seem to be relevant: in short, we have to abide by US copyright, even if the image is PD in its source country. Congratulations, Dear Administrator!
[edit]
WilyD, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.
Please also check or add your entry to Commons:List_of_administrators and the related lists by language and date it references...
My personal advice: As always, please think about what your opposers and supporters said. In your case I would strongly urge you to get more involved in discussions about things... your talk page is almost empty! Best wishes for every success. ++Lar: t/c 15:52, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- PS please check my work on the lists mentioned, and please update Commons:List_of_administrators_by_adminship_status_in_other_Wikimedia_projects as I am not sure where else you are an admin. Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 15:58, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:AnimatedOrbitOf1PHalley.gif
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:AnimatedOrbitOf1PHalley.gif. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Revert
[edit]Well, it seemed a bit weird. The topic was "potato" and the user inserted a link to an image. I believed it to be a test edit by an anon, so I reverted. Nishkid64 (talk) 18:48, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Library and Archives Canada non-public domain images
[edit]You have uploaded one or more images from Library and Archives Canada which is tagged as "copyrighted free use". Since Library and Archives Canada has made it clear they have not granted permission for free use of its photo catalogue, I have nominated all non-public domain images for deletion. Please see Commons:Deletion requests/Library and Archives Canada non-PD images. Thanks - some day, when your image(s) enter(s) the public domain, it can return to Commons! --Padraic 15:25, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Corporation copyright
[edit]Nice catch. We should actually whip up a PD template for exactly those cases. I actually lobbied a while back for more specific PD-Canada templates, but got locked in 1-on-1 stalemate. You should weigh in over at Template talk:PD-Canada. --Padraic 19:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
deprecated function in your monobook.js
[edit]Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.
This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.
To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hilda
[edit]Hi Wily,
Thanks for Image:AnimatedOrbitOf153Hilda.gif. Could you maybe add the motion of Jupiter (and maybe mark L4 & L5) so that we can see the resonance in action?

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:28, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

De-adminship warning
[edit]Dear WilyD. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.
If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.
You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.
Thank you
