rollbacks
[edit]You accidentally added some 'images' to Category:White House videos. Since it was done with VFC, I assumed it was a simple mistake. Reventtalk 00:15, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you, I might have seen it when I went through that category later, but I thought it was just videos to videos. I appreciate you catching that mistake for me. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 00:51, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Redundant?
[edit]This edit seems to me to just add a redundant category. Photo -> Category:Pop Conference 2014 -> Category:April 2014 in Washington (state). Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 17:48, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- To me it seems like another legitimate way to search for an image depending on what you are looking for, but it really doesn't affect me on this image, so do what you wish on it. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 18:18, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Jasonanaggie, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File renaming
[edit]Hi, Jasonanaggie, this file should be renamed because of #2, to change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays. Since you were the uploader, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 13:47, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Done, thanks! -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 19:42, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ ВЫБОРЫ В ГОСУДАРСТВЕННУЮ ДУМУ 4 декабря 2011.pdf. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Hello! I've seen you replaced ISOdate by Taken on for several of my images. Sorry, but this is not a improvement. I don't like the category Photographs taken at at the first position. The information is not very important for the users. Please don't use Taken on for my images. Thank you very much. BTW: It is overcategorization. --XRay talk 19:44, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- I'm thinking about your replacements. I'm not sure, but may be I'll replace ISOdate by Taken on for all my images with parameter cat=no. It will be done with my bot. --XRay talk 20:30, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- I only prefer Taken on over ISO date as it makes it easy to look at pictures of the same areas by time with the same location; it seemed to be ideal for the kinds of pictures you had uploaded; to make a sort of mosaic over time (Google Earth style). It's up to you, I was just seeing what it would look like on a map and it looked interesting, I had no idea you would be watching the files or I would have reverted them. Sorry. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Elisfkc (talk) 21:29, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Transcodes
[edit]I don't know if it's you, but I've seen a number of your recent uploads that appear to have failed to transcode at higher resolutions, that were thrown back in the queue... an example would be File:Secretary Kerry Delivers Remarks at the U.S. Naval Academy.webm. If you are doing so, please don't. If they have 'recently' (in the past few days) failed to transcode, rerunning them is not going to solve whatever the problem is, and it risks clogging the system again. Files over a GB or so in size are simply not handled well, and when you reset the transcode it removes the error message from the SQL database, making it harder to see if there is a 'real' problem instead of it simply being 'too big'.
Working on getting 'everything' transcoded is a work in progress. Thanks. - Reventtalk 20:01, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:2017 Trump dossier by Christopher Steele, Ex-MI6 Russia Desk Intelligence Agent.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

WH.gov license reviews
[edit]Hi Jason. I've removed about 500 of your uploaded videos from wh.gov from the license review category. My issue with these is that they all have the wh.gov watermark and are obviously the work of whitehouse employees. These are speeches given by Obama and other officials, close-ups of him or Michelle Obama interacting with people, etc, such as File:9-8-15- White House Press Briefing.webm. Why do these need a review? 500 files take a very long time to review, and reviewing files where the source isn't in question seems like a waste of volunteer time. I'm posting this here, but I'd like to get some opinions on whether or not we can forego reviews for videos with the wh.gov watermark. @Jameslwoodward: , @Clindberg: , @Revent: , @Czar: Thoughts? I'm not going to waste any more of my time on these myself, as this is hours of needless button pushing. @Elisfkc: also tags Navy/Airforce/Marines images for review, many of which have obvious EXIF that clearly indicate they're the work of a serviceman/woman. @Stemoc: questioned this practice earlier, and the only answer I could come up with was empty formality. If this needs to be discussed elsewhere, that's fine, but I'm starting here because Jason is uploading hundreds of wh.gov videos (no problem with that of course), so something needs to be figured out going forward and figured out pretty quickly. Without me reviewing these, they would likely just sit there clogging up the review category, making it harder to review files that really require review, and as I said I'm not going to review another one of these, especially when they come in dumps of 500. lNeverCry 02:41, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- @INeverCry: I've marked a fair number with ... it might make sense to run VFC across them, and mark them as a group. - Reventtalk 02:43, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Revent: That would be easy enough with custom replace of course, but it still suggests these need review. My position is that they don't need review of any kind and that Jason and Elisfkc don't need to mark these with LicenseReview at all. There's also the issue that some reviewers might review the files rather than using because they don't know about it. Since we only have one major uploader in Jason, his stopping use of LicenseReview would be the most workable answer. Carl looks to agree. lNeverCry 03:19, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- @INeverCry: Oh, I don't disagree. The only real reason I see for putting a PD review on them is for when 'someday' someone does another run to flag unreviewed YouTube videos. - Reventtalk 03:28, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Revent: I've seen videos and museum images that were uploaded as far back as 2007/2008 marked for review that way... There are some coder people around here that make more work than they do. lNeverCry 04:29, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

- Yeah, the odds of a problem seem so low on those that it's not really worth it to waste admin time. Same with PD-USGov-Military. License review should be more for where someone needs to check the actual source website since that is where the only license is available -- not files which are inherently PD regardless of their actual source. Carl Lindberg (talk) 02:55, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, I will go without having the license review in the future, I was just trying to stay on the right side of the admins in Wikimedia. Thanks. Jasonanaggie (talk) 03:45, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- Now if I could just get the K-Pop people to review each other's uploads, I might have some time to do something I actually like... lNeverCry 04:29, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- @INeverCry: I did it. I honestly didn't think about the fact that they probably did not need license review, since they were from the White House. I just always figure that it is better that files get reviewed than having them not be reviewed. I will avoid doing something like for obviously ok files that in the future. Elisfkc (talk) 04:30, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

I think we need to be very careful about what sites we do this with. I think the White House is almost certainly OK, but Carl's suggestion that we not review images with PD-USGov-Military seems way off base. The sites run by the military often have photographs from vendors which newbies upload with the PD template without any regard for whether they really have copyrights or not. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 12:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- I guess I was more thinking of the images coming from the main military media feeds -- those are virtually always OK. Still, the license review process to me seems more geared towards where the source in particular specified a free license, which needs to be checked at that site. It is always fine to double-check, but don't think I would add the license needed template on *all* PD-USGov-Military files as a matter of course, especially when there is EXIF indicating DoD production or a VIRIN number. I would use some discretion adding that tag for PD-USGov works. Non-high-resolution ones would be more likely to need it. Carl Lindberg (talk) 16:44, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Duplicate uploads
[edit]See File:20160914 Press Briefing HD.webm and File:9-14-16- White House Press Briefing.webm. There is no point to uploading multiple copies. Please don't. - Reventtalk 14:19, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- I didn't intend to, I am trying to complete the archive from the Obama administration and with some of the dates being of in one place or the other, even I might make a mistake. Sorry for the trouble this caused; I beg forgiveness; I will try to prevent in my attempt to complete my little project to replicate this type of mistake. I will ensure I request speedy deletion on any that might slip by. Jasonanaggie (talk) 05:43, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry if I seemed 'accusatory'... that was not my intention. We have cases of people uploading the same video at multiple resolutions intentionally, likely not realizing that they will be scaled down from the best version automatically. I'm aware that you are trying to complete the collection (and this is a very good thing, even through the 'rate' of doing so is yet again hammering the video scalers). The point, really, is that if you upload a better version of the same video it's far better to do it 'on top' of the older one.
- I think you noticed that I re-arranged the categorization of those, with 'in year' categories, and added the sort keys. Hopefully that will make it a lot easier... once a category gets spread onto multiple pages, it's really hard to manage. - Reventtalk 08:39, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

White House Press Briefing
[edit]Hi Jason, Why do you think these White House Press Briefings have to be uploaded here? I don't really see how there are in scope. In addition, they block the transcode queue, and prevent other files to be process in a reasonable time. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:19, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

- Also, let me point out that these briefings will be great in the future to hear the issues of the day when looking back in history, there are very few Public Domain videos that can do this for history sake. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 16:41, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Hey Jasonanaggie. Let me transform my quick deletion request into a full one. [edit]Sorry, I'll remove the category at File:New York City (New York, USA), Statue of Liberty -- 2012 -- 6818.jpg again. It's overcategorization. Please see COM:OVERCAT. --XRay talk 06:33, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- It is not an COM:OVERCAT; It is the location being shown. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 07:00, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- The image is a member of Category:Exterior of the Statue of Liberty. This category is a member of Category:Statue of Liberty. And this is a member of Category:Liberty Island. So the image is already a member of Category:Liberty Island. Adding Category:Liberty Island would be overcategorization. --XRay talk 07:19, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello there. I noticed that you uploaded File:Popular Science April 1931.djvu with a Template:Tl licence. Please note that PD-scan without a template parameter is not sufficient for publications from the United States. PD-scan will default to a message along with "the original file is out of copyright because the author died more than 70 years ago." US copyright, however, is based on the date of first publication and not on death of the author, so for old US magazines or other works you would have to use PD-US-not renewed
or a similar combination. I have now changed the licence for Popular Science April 1931.djvu, but next time please try to add a specifical US licence parameter. Thank you. De728631 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 20:17, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information; I didn't realize the distinction before you pointed it out. I'll make sure to use that template in the future. Cheers. Jasonanaggie (int:Talkpagelinktext) 20:24, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
