Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 14:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Château Dufresne.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- Hallo Thomas1313, you have removed the cc-by-sa-3.0 license directly after upload here. All files on Commons need a license or a public domain reason tag. If you did not intentionally remove it please put it back again. :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:44, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, that applies probably to all your uploaded files starting at File:Château Dufresne - Salon d'Oscar.JPG and newer. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:48, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- No problemo! I put «PD-self», is it ok?
- Hello again, merci, PD-self is fine. You could also have used as you had chosen during upload. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 12:50, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

McCord Museum
[edit]Bonjour. Thanks for uploading a number of images from the McCord Museum. Please, in the future, crop the McCord Museum watermark from the images before uploading - it saves someone else the trouble of needing to crop it out afterwards. Second, please do not add "© McCord Museum" to the image description - regardless of what it says on the McCord Museum website, the museum does not, for example, have any copyright over this 1884 image (or other old images, for that matter). And finally, for pre-1946 images, please use "PD-CanadaCanada" as the license. is incorrect, and could lead to some images being deleted. Hope that helps. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:26, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
- Bonjour! Thanks for all your advices! I'll do it in the future as you explained it. Also, I have a question: how can I crop the McCord Museum watermark of pictures that have been already uploaded? Furthermore, I take this occasion to ask few other questions: how can I rename a category without asking through Bistro? And how can I add a category whitout doing it manually? Thanks a lot!! Sorry for my poor English!--Thomas1313 (talk) 18:00, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delayed response - just saw your comment now. No need to apologize for your English - it is much better than my French. For cropping images, try using User:Cropbot, and overwrite the original file. You can always ask for more information at Commons talk:Media for cleanup. As for renaming categories, the easiest way (assuming you do not want to do it manually) is to list your request at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands#Category moves - if approved, a bot will create the newly-named category and move all the content. As for adding categories, do you mean using Hot Cat? Under My Preferences/Préférences at the top of the page, choose "Gadgets", and then pick "Hot Cat" under "Outils pour les catégories". Once Hot Cat is chosen, you will see + and - symbols next to the categories on an image or cat, allowing you to add and delete categories more quickly. Is this what you meant?
I am happy to answer more questions. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:55, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot!! Other question: How can I cover (brouiller) people's face or car's licence on pictures? Is there any bots for that? Thanks again!--Thomas1313 (talk) 19:57, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

--Minoumi (talk) 20:49, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Share your experience and feedback as a Wikimedian in this global survey
[edit]Hello! The Wikimedia Foundation is asking for your feedback in a survey. We want to know how well we are supporting your work on and off wiki, and how we can change or improve things in the future.[survey 1] The opinions you share will directly affect the current and future work of the Wikimedia Foundation. You have been randomly selected to take this survey as we would like to hear from your Wikimedia community. To say thank you for your time, we are giving away 20 Wikimedia T-shirts to randomly selected people who take the survey.[survey 2] The survey is available in various languages and will take between 20 and 40 minutes.

File:Jean Metzinger, Nu debout.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear Thomas1313,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:05, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

- Bonjour Ruthven!
- Merci pour la validation des photographies! :)

- - Toutes les photographies de la catégorie suivante : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Photographs_by_the_MUMAQ
- 2. Je n'ai pas de préférence! Pour suivre l'exemple de noms d'autres catégories similaires, que penses-tu de "Photographs taken by the MUMAQ" ? Mais je suis ouvert à toutes idées! :)
- 3. Non!

Cordialement, Thomas1313 (talk) 16:52, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
