Missing information
[edit]Hi, thanks for contributing to WikiCommons. Please add a source who can verify that the photos are public domain. It is not enough with a copyright notice. Also, images with incomplete information may be deleted. Thuresson 04:34, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

Admin?
[edit]Hi Tarawneh! I was wondering if you are interested in becoming an admin on the Commons? At the moment we only have one admin who speaks any Arabic at all - and they are ar-1! It would be fantastic to have an Arabic speaking admin so that other admins can direct Arabic-speaking users to you for help, and also have your help in implementing Commons policy on ar.wp. But actually it's very easy to become an admin, and it's only as much work as you choose to do (of course we would love you to choose to do lots, but many don't :)). So what do you think? You can nominate yourself or if you like, I can nominate you.
Oh and BTW... Can you tell me what this page is about? مسجد امام I think it's about a mosque? We really shouldn't have big slabs of text like this. If it's just someone's rant, let me know and I'll delete it, otherwise it should be trimmed down to a short description, and most importantly, it needs some images!

Extra-tabs.js
[edit]Hi I have answered at my user page in Commons. Have a look. Greetings, Arnomane 15:55, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi sorry for the delay. In the meantime I have created an account in ar.wp ar:User:Arnomane and also played with the extratabs file. The problem is that the links in the HTML code of the page don't get encoded in UTF8 but some wired code that is also responsible for displaying wild random garbage at special character URL's (so the script does look for the wrong namespace strings in the HTML and thus doesn't display anything as it doesn't find anything). However I don't know if this is somehow dependant from browser encoding settings and thus wanted to check back with some MediaWiki devs in order to get explained what is happening there (as I really hate these garbage URL's instead of proper non-Ascii characters)... [edit]"Idea not clear" - I wonder whether you have read the caption in Commons when you click on the picture, I thought it was fairly clear. Is there some way I could make it clearer? GrahamBould 05:28, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- The wall is quite normal, but the way that it is placed at the bottom of an excavated trench is not common. It is usually only found around stately homes in England. And the double-sided version is particularly rare. I think you have to be aware of English landscape gardening to appreciate it. I mean, have you seen one before? GrahamBould 19:45, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Picture descriptions
[edit]Hi Tarawneh, you uploaded several maps of Bremen. Those descriptions contain multiple mistakes, (ex. Image:Bremen-Blumenthal.png):
- Most users of these maps speak German, so why don't you keep the german description phrase? You can use Template:De and Template:En together into the description-field
- You wrote: "you will find the same file with same name on de.wikipedia.org". This is wrong. The use of the commons is, that the local copies of the images are deleted.
- The Phrase "it was set to puplic domian by the Author: Benutzer:Daniel FR" does not belong to the description-part, but under "Permission"
- The Source is not "de.wiki", source would be something like "self-made by Username".
- Date: You wrote "may 2005", in the original description I found december 1st 2004.
- Author: surprise, this one's correct ;)
- Permisson: The license-template normaly has its own section on the description page (== Licensing ==). The Permisson-field is ment for a sort of quote from the autor (like "Hereby I release this picture to the public domain" or something like that …)
Please take that a little mor serious, its lot of work to correct all this. Greets --dbenzhuser 01:17, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Arabic scripts
[edit]Hey Tarawneh, I have a question that's complete unrelated to the Commons. :) I'm interested in teaching myself some w:Uyghur, which has (among others) an Arabic-based script. Now, I've never dealt with an Arabic script before. I simply don't know how to tell, for example, where one symbol ends and another begins. They all run together so smoothly! Do you have any tips for me or know of any good resources for Arabic newbies? Thanks! pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:53, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Omar Mukhtar 11.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Omar Mukhtar 11.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Arabic CommonsTicker
[edit]Hi - since you seem to be quite active here on commons, perhaps we can coordinate here :) I did write you an email early this month (around the fourth of june) - if you didn't get it, it must have been lost somewhere on the way. Also, a week or so ago de:Benutzer:Oxydo told me he'd take care of the CommonsTicker setup for the aracic wiki - did he talk to you? You should somehow coordinate.
Anyway... the ticker page appears to be incomplete - most importantly, it is missing the insertion merkers that the CommonsTicker where new entries should be posted. And what is this page? Is is a separate "list" page for posting? That'S no longer necessary, but if you want it, the insertion markers must be on that page. Also, there where some minor changes to the templates, css styles, etc used by the ticker - it would be best if you could again copy and adjust the examples from [1].
So, sorry for the long dely :/ Apperently, language abrriers are still something to consider... -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:20, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, my fault - while in append-mode the ticker never removes old entries, it should not repeat them either. I hope it is fixed now, i corrected the configuration. Please look at the next updates and tell me if everything is OK. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:40, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
I would like to ask you: Would you translate the Welcome-template to Arabic? This template is placed on newcomers talk pages and gives them a collection of useful links. In a second step, also an Arabic version of Commons:First steps would be very useful, but I do not want to burden you with too much work all at once. Perhaps you know other Arabic speakers whom you could ask. Greetings and thanks in advance, Longbow4u 09:18, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Thought I might advertise a new template I created that would suit some of the galleries you've uploaded recently. It's intended to make sequential browsing of series of numerically indexed files easier. You could take a look at Image:050529 Barcelona 085.jpg for an example of how it works.
I had intended to start adding it to your images (starting with Image:Reincarnation 2006 - Hannover 1.JPG), but a recent patch to the MediaWiki software changed the behavior of the {{padleft:}} magic word, which in turn broke the template for indices without leading zeros (like yours).
Anyways... just wanted to point it out to you if you were interested. Let me know if you like or dislike anything about that template. Thanks! ~MDD4696 01:41, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Not more than 2.5 hours after I submitted the bug, Rob Church fixed it. The fix should propagate its way to Commons soon enough :). ~MDD4696 04:34, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- The template can handle filenames with and without leading zeros. If there's the option, not having leading zeros is preferable. When there are no leading zeros in the series, simply omit the index_width parameter.
- Examples:
- Image:050529 Barcelona 096.jpg - Series contains leading zeros. index_width is 3 numerals.
- Image:050529 Barcelona 102.jpg - Series contains leading zeros. index_width is 3 numerals (not absolutely required, but makes the wiki code consistent across the series).
- Image:Reincarnation 2006 - Hannover 1.JPG - Series does not contain leading zeros. Omit index_width parameter.
- Image:Reincarnation 2006 - Hannover 76.JPG - Series does not contain leading zeros. Omit index_width parameter.
- Examples:
- Just look at the code in the Barcelona series or on the first Hannover image for examples. I also wrote some decent documentation on the template's talk page. You'll know when the template is working again when all of the list items show up at User:Mdd4696/Sandbox. ~MDD4696 04:50, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I noticed you just uploaded Image:ST Petri Dom - inside 4.jpg. Unfortunately, Template:Series is quite sensitive to exact capitalization. The images in the series must have consistent capitalization, meaning that even the file extension (.JPG or .jpg) must be capitalized the same. Perhaps I could code something that would bypass this restriction... do you think that's worth it? ~MDD4696 06:27, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Well, maybe later I'll accept a nomination, but while I personally don't think that one's status on one wiki should influence the status (or lack of) on another, I'll certainly concede your point that the timing was ... well, atrocious.
Anywho, there are more important things to talk about!
First, I haven't used Bryce 6 yet. Honestly, I think I'm back at 4.something and mostly use it to make simple shaping, then do the rest of the work in Photoshop. Easier to keep perspective straight when it's not an issue at all, y'know. I use Photoshop CS extensively, and am the proud owner of a "Snow" Wacom to prove it! :D I was originally planning on uploading more photography, but after my DSLR was stolen, sadly that's not going to happen until I get an opportunity to replace it. :(
More important question time:
While I'm not great with languages, in most with the aid of a translation dictionary and online translator, can get the gist across. I'd say that in certain topics of discussion I can get to JA-3, ES-2, and FR-3, and leverage my Japanese skills to do Korean translations. Chinese would be easier, you'd think, but while I'm probably a -1 when ordering dinner, that's about where it stops.
The languages that really, really catch me just happen to include one that you seem to have a bit of detailed knowledge about: Arabic, and by extension, any R->L Semitic languages, confound me while trying to translate templates. Let's say, for instance, I want to link to the article "Arabic language" on arwiki, with the link in Arabic. I've tried to simply paste عربي into the wikilink, but if the surrounding script is also Arabic, my square brackets get ... well, messed up. Any suggestions? (aside from "don't bother" of course! :D )
Reply here if you would, I'll watch the page. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 03:08, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

I understand - after your translation (Image:Arabian-coin-1920-ar Translate.jpg) - it is Ottoman 40 tara coin, minted in 1336 Islamic calendar (i.e. - according to current correlations - 1918 Christian calendar).
But, what is tara? I can not find this term as a currency. Ottoman Empire used akçe, kuruş, Turkish lira, and - as subunit - para coins. Look at this link: http://www.ottomancoins.com/
According Image:Arabian-coin.jpg - does it mean there is no value on this coin?

Hi. The Arabic upload text would need to be updated.
I have noticed an increase in uploads from Arabic users. I welcome this, but they appear to be badly informed in how the upload procedure works. It is quite typical to see image descriptions such as Image:Ibnbadis.JPG that are incorrect. The problem might be helped if MediaWiki:Uploadtext/ar is updated to say how important it is to give source and a correct license information. Could you help with this?

- Um... I for some reason used the wrong image entirely in the section header! It's the 1972 flag of Egypt I am doing the script in the bitmap on, not the current flag of Cairo. Apologies! -- Editor at Large • talk 10:54, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Arabic "Flag of Syria" article
[edit]I'm unsure about your edits to ar:علم سوريا (at [4]) . Though سورية may be the "official" spelling, سوريا seems to be more commonly used (twice as many Google hits), and you made سورية into a link every single time it occurred in the article, which perhaps is of limited usefulness. Also, you didn't change the title of the article to match your preferred spelling, which seems confusing. -- AnonMoos 16:03, 20 February 2007 (UTC) (الناموس)
Hi Tarawneh, I've become interested in historical images of Ibn Battuta, and so I'm trying to find out more about the image here on the Commons. Unfortunately, the image comes with almost no description, and the first few hundred different images found by google (searching for "Ibn Battuta") don't give me any hint either. I wonder if the picture actually does depict Ibn Battuta, and where/when it is from. As far as I can tell, the "caption" doesn't even mention Ibn Battuta's name, but then again... Could you help me out? Could you tell me what the lines above and below the picture mean? And dothey give any indication as to the origin of the image (in terms of a description or simply by the style of language, etc.)? Thanks a lot, Ibn Battuta 07:40, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Mandearar
[edit]It's a picture of what I belive is baptize among the people we in Norwegian call mandearar on ar:مندائية (the second picture om that page). Is it possible to use the picture on nn:mandearar? Could you please help me translating the text and the license on this picture - and maybe also on the first picture on that page? mvh Knut
Image deletion warning | Template:PD-Arab has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Image Tagging Image:Hitler 01.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Hitler 01.jpg. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Why you did delete this file?
[edit]Hi. Can I kindly know why you did delete the file [Image:Halal dhaka.jpg] from Commons, referring to 'id al-adha? It was a problem of copyright or this was depending from the will to delete something impressing - but well existing - in Islamic culture? Tanks for your answer. --Cloj 11:10, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Strange Image:Alleged consp map8 1914.jpg
[edit]Question: who/what is the source for this "map"? It feels as absurd proposition for any politicians in 1914, including Wilhelm (getting rid of parts of Silesia and Saxony in favour of "Hungarians"?), Franz Ferdinand (he hated Hungarians above all), Hungarians (even more Slavs?), Russian Empire (getting rid of population and industrial centers?).
It was shortly discussed on a what-if newsgroup [5], found absurd and given how knowledgeable some people there are it means something.
The map is not used anywhere and if it is someone's joke it may be perhaps deleted. Pavel Vozenilek 22:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Refactoring of {{PD-Arab}}
[edit]Hi, sorry to spam your talk page, but you are the only admin who claimed to speak Arabic fluently. I have just split it into several country specific tags per Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PD-Arab. The translations of Arabic copyright law I was working from were not the best, and I was hoping you could look them over and just do a sanity check. I'm particularly concerned about what exactly constitutes photos of "scenery". There is also a discussion at Commons talk:Licensing that is suggesting the templates should be at least in English and Arabic. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. --Selket 17:44, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tarawneh. You uploaded a new picture over mine. Well, it wasn't great anyway, so this is no loss for Commons, but the least you could have done is to change the description accordingly. It still mentioned me as an author before I corrected it, which was of course blatantly false. - Again I told you before, I know what is going over Ar.wiki. I WORK THERE. Prophets-Mihrab.jpg for example is used in ar.wiki. It is found all-over the Internet , you yourself uploaded it as fairuse in ar.wiki [6], you had months of edit-wars with Petra there over such images, then you simply decided it would be easier to move the image into commons as PD. [7]! Same thing for the Winged-boy-Qaryat-al-Faw.jpg image, it was uploaded by you on commons as PD-self [8], this same image was uploaded by you in ar.wiki as fairuse [9] twice, and deleted twice there by admins, [10] for being Fair-use, once by Meno25 and the other time by Alnokta, the same image you yourself stated that you scanned from a book نسخت بالسكانر من كتاب قرية الفاو صورة من الحضارة العربية قبل الإسلام. The same image you had a long edit war with Petra. Image Imam ali coin is the same, the image was published in مجلة أمواج سكندرانية more than 5 years ago. And now it is your work! Check your image alZahrawi tools, you reverted admin edits there, so will that be your next PD image here? I have never blocked anyone on commons; I never felt that there was a need to block anyone on commons. In your case I made an exception. --Tarawneh 22:57, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Dear Dr. Tarawneh,
I know we could be demanding and sometimes probably asking for the obvious. Yet I cheer you for doing your job here in spite of having to complete your PHD. I wish you well.
You have deleted two photos out of many I have uploaded, because I have indicated that the author was (PETRA). I was truthful. These photos were granted to me almost a year ago from the Circassian Tribal Council who have had authorization from PETRA. The reason I was granted these photos is based on the fact that I am producing a documentary about Circassians in Jordan. I am aware of the issue of rights. Had I not added that they originated from PETRA, you would not have deleted them. I believe in being ethical. So what you have done is right. I need to use these photos because they add to the credibility of the article I have written. The visit of HM King Abdullah II is quite historical because it was the first visit of a Jordanian Monarch to the Circassians. That is in spite of the Hashemite historical relations with the Circassians. I assure you I have these rights, so please advise me on what to do to retrieve them. I wish you luck with your PHD and best regards

- Thanks إبن البيطار. You need to get Petra agency to send an email to the foundation to prove that they allowed such use. more info can be found on Commons:OTRS. Sorry, but I am not a part of OTRS , ar:user:mido is the Arabic admin that works there, he should be able to help you. If you think you can get them to send an email I will restore the image, No problem . --Tarawneh 00:01, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
- Many thanks indeed Tarawneh. May I ask for one more favor please? To what email address that authorization ought to go, and adressed to whom? Thanks a million --إبن البيطار 01:32, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
Arabic right to left?
[edit]Shouldn't the Arabic Commons be right to left like the Hebrew and a few others? Do you have any thoughts on that? --Steinninn 17:45, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
You are erasing my photos one by one
[edit]Dear Tarawneh
These photos were officially given to me. I createde the links to where I had used them earlier, why to erase them here. I was granted these photos last year not even this year. My website has them from that time. Howcan I get copies from the Royal Court as you say. Check their websites. They do not carry these photos any more. And I am sure you know you cannot get such photos from the royal court without permission. Please reconsider and let me know. The first time you erased them instead of going through the hustle of getting permissions I added links. Now the article is being killed.
Regards

Thanks for your quick response
[edit]Dear Tarawneh,
I appreciate what you are doing. The first two photos that had the king with the Circassians I managed to add as NAlinks. Those were from Petra News. With Ramadan and the difference of timing I could not get hold of any one who could help me there till now.
The photos you took out today were officially given to me By HRH Prince Asem Bin Nayef, who is a very good friend of mine. He actually got me the hard copies from the Royal Court for me to use in my site. You would understand the sensitivities to ask him to send such an email now, or ask him to ask the Royal Court to do that. I am certain that the Royal Court will not find these photos offensive in any way.
Legally the photos were taken from my site, and I have stated that, so I am held responsible and not wikimedia. I think!
Best regards my friend

You are a Gentleman
[edit]Dear Tarawneh,
I sincerely thank you for your interest. You have been extremely the most cooperative and most understanding since I have started writing in Wikipedia.
Your question is extremely valid. I own a company in Dubai called GETIN MEDIA. This is a consultancy service that I have started last May. It has nothing to do with the production in Amman.
I got the photos last year to include in my personal website because I created a few pages about Circassians. This got me hooked and I decided to do the Documentary, and met as an individual the Circassian Tribal Council officially in June 2006 and had their permission. I continued my research, and this year I presented to the Royal Jordanian Film Commission my project and have their approval.
I hope to start filming next spring. To do the Documentary I created a company with HRH Princess Sana Asem last month in Amman. We are still in the process of completing the registration. We called the company “Al Sana Productions and Distribution Company” Our first project is the documentary is about the Circassian Community in Jordan. We are planning to produce another one later about the Tribes of Jordan.
What hooked me mainly with the Circassian issue is that I could see the synergy with the Palestinian Cause. Except here, the Circassians are handling it extremely well and in a very sophisticated manner. They are devoted to Jordan, yet they have not forgotten their heritage or home land. Instead of fighting and creating chaos, they are approaching it in a very respectful attitude using their folklore and traditions, and using dialogue as a tool. Yet they will die for Jordan.
All the above has nothing to do with me writing in the Wikipedia, except for the fact that these photos were given to me by Hajj Adnan Kalimat for my use in my personal private family website, that has no commercial activities.
I am actively trying to include more personalities from Jordan in the Wikipedia and rewriting some of the pages that are stubs into full articles.
I have lately written about Bahjat Al Muhaisen, Saad Juma, Said Al Mufti and others.
I am doing this out of my belief that the Arabic content on the Internet has to increase, and I also believe that Jordan has offered through its people examples of patriotic and compassionate individuals that shared in making a better environment out of this region of turmoil. I believe that this goes beyond the expectations of many who might have negative information about Jordan.
No matter what happens, I sincerely thank you again, and honestly would be delighted to meet you one day.
Warm Regards --Nasib Bitar 16:30, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Dear Tarawneh,
I hate to do this. صانع القوالب is mad about my article about عدنان مولود شكاخوة I do not really know why. The voting was in my favor, but this seemed to be challenging him hard, so he attacked me, and added information I did not mention. Is he right in his claim. Of course I defended my self. Please have a look in the discussion page of the article and the voting page. Please advice. Thanks --Nasib Bitar 18:21, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

From Nasib Bitar
[edit]Dear Tarawneh,
Hi how are you.
All the clip-art you saw in any thing I create, is from the soft ware I own. I use PowerPoint 2007 to create the art work, and the clip-art I use comes either with the software or online from Microsoft. I have already specified that with the artwork as saying from Windows. The rest is my creation. Do you want me to say Microsoft instead of Windows?
Any way the since I am the only user using it you can erase it if you wish.
As for the other photos I changed the license, I do not know if it is the right one, but I got Said Al Mufti's and Saad Juma's photos from Jordan's Prime ministry's Site.
Haidar Abdel Shafi's photo, I got from a site that offers to share its content, I have added a link to it.
Final Question, the photos I have offered to the public domain, do I have to categories them for people to find them?
If I still am wrong I humbly plead that you tell me immediately.
Many thanks indeed.

Thanks for uploading Image:Omar_Mukhtar_11.jpg. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.
