Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:AlisoCreekMapFinal.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Your map of the Mackenzie River watershed
[edit]You have prepared some very attractive maps. Your map of the Mackenzie River watershed is higher resolution and uses better colours than the map I prepared. There is one thing I noticed about it that I was curious about -- I think you chose to use Mercator projection. The Mercator projection keeps lines of latitude parallel -- at the cost of distorting and stretching the northern areas of maps. The farther north the greater the distortion.
I chose Lambert Azimuthal projection -- which does a better job at not stretching and distorting northern areas, at the cost of no longer keeping lines of latitude parallel. My map uses Lambert Azimuthal projection. I like Orthographic projection too.
I've created a bunch of maps, using this online map creation tool. I'd like to create better maps. I have kept my eyes peeled for tutorials of better tools. Have you seen any?
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 09:55, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
- Whoops, I don't include the latitude and longitude lines on my maps. I use Demis Mapserver for my maps of longer rivers and USGS Seamless for the smaller ones, or sometimes the combination of both. USGS also has some watershed data for extremely large hydrologic regions and National Hydrographic Database has more data on hydrology, but most of these sites are for the US only. I used to use Planiglobe, but the display is really small. I actually tried to make the projection on the Mackenzie River map more stretched out north to south in Photoshop, and more similar to the projection you used in your maps, but as evident, I still failed, but check out what it looks like on Demis, it's extremely distorted. Your image of the Virgin River watershed
[edit]Your very attractive image of the Virgin River watershed shows Ash Creek (and therefore the northern boundary of the watershed) extending further than it actually does. It appears that you may have concatenated Big Hollow Wash and Iron Springs Creek onto the north end of Ash Creek. These other two streams are north flowing intermittent streams that drain into the Great Basin rather than into the Colorado River. I think the little northwest jog of Ash Creek just north of the "A" in "Ash" is probably the first portion of Ash Creek on your map that isn't really there.
Hi Shannon, unfortunately this image appears to be from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department [1], which holds copyright to its works, so it will have to be deleted here on Commons. I see that it's used in the infobox for the Missouri River article on Wikipedia; I'll move a different photo into the infobox. Jsayre64 (talk) 03:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
File:Syrdaryamap.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

[edit]Hi Shannon1, I have seen your File:Amudaryamap.jpg and File:Syrdaryamap.png.
I am writing an article about Alexandria Oxiana, which was (among other 5 cities) according to Ptolemy, between the two rivers, Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Therefore, it would be ideal if you could provide a map showing both rivers in bold. My personal preference is the background which is closer to Syrdaryamap.png, where today's countries and their borders are more visible (so that we have a general idea of where this is in current terms).
For the moment I just created the File:Amudaryamap Alexandria on the Oxus.jpg, on which I show the old and new proposal for the location of Alexandria on the Oxus (Alexandria Oxiana). If oyu could also put the name of the cities, it would be great.
In Greek:
Ai-Khanoum = Άϊ-Χανούμ 37°10′10″N 69°23′30″E
Termez = Τερμέζ 37°13′N 67°17′E
Oxus river = Ώξος ποταμός
You can find positions of the cities in en-wikipedia.
Thank you. --FocalPoint (talk) 19:38, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Your image - map of Umpqua River watershed
[edit]Hi, Shannon1, I noticed that in your map of the Umpqua River watershed (Umpquarivermap.jpg) there seems to be a mistake: The lake that is labelled "Maidu Lake" in your map is actually Diamond Lake, while the real Maidu Lake lies further northeast (maybe even outside the area of the map) and is much smaller. --Johnny.m76 (talk) 13:49, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Mekongbasin.jpg
[edit]Hi Shannon, thank you for uploading the riverbasin map file:Mekongbasin.jpg. I'd like to ask you if you could upload a blank version of the map, too, so a version in which the river basin is highlighted, but before you added the english labels by Adobe Illustrator. Of course it would be possible to create such a file again, by the maps at DEMIS mapserver, but you already did the work and it's a lot easier for you to add a second version of your file than to do all the work a second time. Such a blank file would be easy to adapt to several languages in the articles itself and would be an alternative to use in languages quite different from english. --ThomasPusch (talk) 08:57, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Kaopingrivermap.png
[edit]Hi, I think there is a mistake in naming of rivers here. Both GoogleMaps and this scientific paper suggest that the westernmost branch should be the Qishan River (now Laonung), whereas what now is Kaoping should be the Laonong River.
