Thanks for uploading File:Alan Turing Aged 16.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Alan Turing Aged 16.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Files from Facebook and licenses.
[edit]Hi Sefer azeri,
I found that some of your files were originally uploaded on Facebook (File:Sevrec porcelain plate in the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan.jpg and File:Albert Nicolas Roosenboom - Winter landscape.jpg). Did you take these photographs yourself as indicated in the source field? If so could you explain why they were first uploaded to Facebook.
Another issue that I see at a lot of your files is that they are indicated as own work but are clearly pictures of copyrighted objects. Template:Art photo likely fits better for your uploads, it gives room to state both the permission for the photo and the art work. Basvb (talk) 17:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear Sefer azeri,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:05, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Müqəddəs Stepannos kilsəsinin planı.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Müqəddəs Stepannos kilsəsinin planı.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Sefer azeri.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

[edit]Dear Sefer azeri,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,

[edit]If you attempt to change sourced content again, that is, changing X-content into Azerbaijani in spite of the given source, you will be reported to ANI.[1]-[2]-[3]-[4]-[5]-[6]-[7] - LouisAragon (talk) 20:49, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- @LouisAragon: the same issue obviously continues. Not only this user is changing existing proper descriptions, but also uploading material from museums and attributing forgeries (check it from my move log). His most common modus operandi is to find artwork with official museum description like Azerbaïdjan (région) / Iran nord occidental (=nord-ouest) in Louvre, implying Iranian Azerbaijan i.e. nortwestern Iran, and then to claim it's from contemporary Republic of Azerbaijan. Artworks from Shiraz, Iraq and Afghanistan are also affected (see this, this and this). There are many more files that need to be checked and corrected. He also tends to play with dating, for example museum source says 11-13th century, and he cherry-picks 10th to fit for particular Arran dynasty. This is not something new, Sefer azeri is doing it for years, I remember well. Therefore I suggest making a report to ANI. --Orijentolog (talk) 11:17, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Orijentolog: I see. This user is clearly not here to build this project (and I'm definitely not surprised). Could you form the ANI case? I'll follow up. - LouisAragon (talk) 11:36, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- @LouisAragon: sure, I'll fill a report if he makes just one more similar edit. He do makes some constructive uploads of Oriental art which I like to see. --Orijentolog (talk) 11:51, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

- @Orijentolog: and @LouisAragon: greetings to both of you. Sorry for being late to join your dialogue, but now I have found the time to read your thoughts. Honestly, I feel aggression against me and my country in the minds of both of you, and I do not understand why. However, I would like to assure you that, like you, I try to enrich Wikipedia as I find time for my work. I recently returned from a trip to Istanbul, and I'm trying to edit many of the photos I've taken in museums and upload them to Wikipedia. Only a part of the photos I uploaded is related to Azerbaijan, so I do not consider your opinion, to put it mildly, fair.
As for your views on the Republic of Azerbaijan (Northern Azerbaijan) and Iranian Azerbaijan (Southern Azerbaijan), until the 19th century, these two regions were culturally and historically united. Like South Azerbaijan, the territories where the Republic of Azerbaijan is now located are under the influence of Iranian culture, and therefore it is impossible to discuss any cultural event up to the 19th century without taking it out of context. Until the end of the 19th century, in the northern palaces, all poets continued to write in Persian, the same carpets were woven in both the north and the south, the same songs were heard, and the same dances were performed. Therefore, it is almost impossible to determine whether this or that historical artifact belongs to the northern or southern part of Azerbaijan without knowing the exact city of production. In fact, it makes no sense, as I said, until the 19th century, both parts of Azerbaijan continued to be under the rule of one state (dynasty), and regardless of where it was created, the place of production is Azerbaijan. For example, look at the history of the historical artifact from Mosul, which you link above. The work was created in the 12th century in Mosul - on the territory of the Atabes of Azerbaijan. The Atabeys were a dynasty of Turkic origin, both capitals were located in Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan and Tabriz), Mosul, where the work was produced, has been a predominantly Turkish city for centuries, and today Turkomans living in Mosul speak a dialect of the Azerbaijani language. Now, tell me, how right is it to discuss this work outside the context of Azerbaijani culture?
As mentioned above, If you here to build Wikipedia and do not follow any interests, then, I am ready to discuss at length all the issues that concern you. Keep in mind that I am also a human being and I can make mistakes and overlook something. Therefore, mark every point you need to discuss, so that I can answer you and come to a joint decision. Sincerely, --Sefer azeri (talk) 17:31, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- The diffs are there for eveyone to see. You are evidently on a campaign to import Soviet/Aliyev-funded historical negationism into this project, which is not allowed.[8] We've got numerous diffs where you are literally changing content into "Azerbaijani" even though the sources provided by the museums clearly call it something else. And FYI, the initial warning posted on your talk page is already pretty old, yet even after that you still continued making the same sort of disruptive edits. Now please do tell me again, how are you supposedly here to build this project when we've got these diffs laying here? Combined with your latest response, which once again fits a well known negationist discourse, I can guarantee that this won't look good at ANI. Here's some WP:RS material from historians published in countries with freedom of press (lol @ calling them "our views"):
- George Bournoutian (2016). The 1820 Russian Survey of the Khanate of Shirvan: A Primary Source on the Demography and Economy of an Iranian Province prior to its Annexation by Russia. Gibb Memorial Trust.;
- p. xvi
- "As noted, in order to construct an Azerbaijani national history and identity based on the territorial definition of a nation, as well as to reduce the influence of Islam and Iran, the Azeri nationalists, prompted by Moscow devised an "Azeri" alphabet, which replaced the Arabo-Persian script. In the 1930s a number of Soviet historians, including the prominent Russian Orientalist, Ilya Petrushevskii, were instructed by the Kremlin to accept the totally unsubstantiated notion that the territory of the former Iranian khanates (except Yerevan, which had become Soviet Armenia) was part of an Azerbaijani nation. Petrushevskii's two important studies dealing with the South Caucasus, therefore, use the term Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani in his works on the history of the region from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Other Russian academics went even further and claimed that an Azeri nation had existed from ancient times and had continued to the present. Since all the Russian surveys and almost all nineteenth-century Russian primary sources referred to the Muslims who resided in the South Caucasus as "Tatars" and not "Azerbaijanis", Soviet historians simply substituted Azerbaijani for Tatars. Azeri historians and writers, starting in 1937, followed suit and began to view the three-thousand-year history of the region as that of Azerbaijan. The pre-Iranian, Iranian, and Arab eras were expunged. Anyone who lived in the territory of Soviet Azerbaijan was classified as Azeri; hence the great Iranian poet Nezami, who had written only in Persian, became the national poet of Azerbaijan."
- p. xvii;
- "Although after Stalin's death arguments rose between Azerbaijani historians and Soviet Iranologists dealing with the history of the region in ancient times (specifically the era of the Medes), no Soviet historian dared to question the use of the term Azerbaijan or Azerbaijani in modern times. As late as 1991, the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, published a book by an Azeri historian, in which it not only equated the "Tatars" with the present-day Azeris, but the author, discussing the population numbers in 1842, also included Nakhichevan and Ordubad in "Azerbaijan". The author, just like Petrushevskii, totally ignored the fact that between 1828 and 1921, Nakhichivan and Ordubad were first part of the Armenian Province and then part of the Yerevan guberniia and had only become part of Soviet Azerbaijan, some eight decades later."
- p. xv;
- "Although the overwhelming number of nineteenth-century Russian and Iranian, as well as present-day European historians view the Iranian province of Azarbayjan and the present-day Republic of Azerbaijan as two separate geographical and political entities, modern Azeri historians and geographers view it as a single state that has been separated into "northern" and "southern" sectors and which will be united in the future."
- p. xviii;
- "Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the current Azeri historians have not only continued to use the terms "northern" and "southern" Azerbaijan, but also assert that the present-day Armenian Republic was a part of northern Azerbaijan. In their fury over what they view as the "Armenian occupation" of Nagorno-Karabakh [which incidentally was an autonomous Armenian region within Soviet Azerbaijan], Azeri politicians and historians deny any historic Armenian presence in the South Caucasus and add that all Armenian architectural monuments located in the present-day Republic of Azerbaijan are not Armenian but [Caucasian] Albanian."
- LouisAragon (talk) 17:44, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- More (all of the sources are peer-reviewed WP:RS):[9]
- "Southern Azerbaijan" is a Soviet-invented word,[20] originally used to lay the Soviet Union's territorial claim on Iranian historical region of Azerbaijan in line with a propaganda campaign to construct a national narrative.[21][22] Though documents reveal that Moscow was behind instructing such propaganda work, there is also evidence of Soviet internal dissent to this policy, as Sergey Kavtaradze warned Vyacheslav Molotov that "renaming of Iranian Azerbaijan into Southern Azerbaijan... would be inexpedient and fraught with the risk of unwanted consequences".[23] The Soviets continued to promote this word even after demise of Ja'far Pishevari and the puppet state Azerbaijan People's Government.[22]
- "After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the "southern" theme was revived again.[22] Utilization of the term has been an integral part of a nation-building attempt by the present-day Republic of Azerbaijan and its government.[22][24] Official history thought at schools and universities tends to rediscover the separation of the nation when Russo-Persian Wars took place in the early 19th century, and a revisionist interpretation of events to show "constant struggle of the Azerbaijanis for their unity".[24] As a result, usage of the term Iranian Azerbaijan would automatically adjust Republic of Azerbaijan to Iran and undermine justification for independence of the former, and is thus.[24] Certain political circles in Baku welcome the so-called Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement.[24]"[10]

- Look, both me and LouisAragon can't buy such stories, we're not charlatans for Oriental art and general history. It's quite easy to distinguish artistic origins because until 20th century Azerbaijan implied only northwestern Iran, while area of today's Republic of Azerbaijan was called Arran. Museum sources clearly make such distinction, even offering proper contemporary explanations (like northwestern Iran vs. Caucasian Azerbaijan).
- Yes, both areas were united, under various Iranian dynasties, so it's actually hard to discuss about any pre-19th-century art in today's Republic of Azerbaijan outside of the context of Iranian culture. Such art is classified as Iranian aka Persian, including Eldiguzid art. No one in the world claims it's "ethnic" Azerbaijani or "ethnic" Turkic art. Such types of arts don't exist. In the same way, Mosul carpets are traditionally classified as Turkish (because of Ottoman rule), and synonym for a hammam is Turkish bath. It doesn't matter was Mosul carpet woven by Arab or Kurd, or particular hammam was built by Persian or Pashtun, because I'll repeat - labels like Iranian/Persian or Turkish aren't of ethnic nature.
- For me, it's quite clear that you would like to construct an ethnic art, based on tendentious interpretation of history, anachronisms and pure forgeries. Particularly bizarre is your appeal on dynastic origins, you're implying that Eldiguzids were sort of self-aware proud Azeri or Turkic? Or Safavids and Qajars? The former were invoking ancient Arab origins because of religious reasons, rather than Persian or Turkic, and the latter were even claiming Arsacid Parthian ancestry. Not because they were sort of proud Iranians, it was actually fashionable in that times to invent "glorious" ancestry (like Sarmatism in Europe) only for purpose of distancing royalty from peasants, i.e. Persians, Azeris and others. Not to mention all of dynasties, from Achaemenids to Ottomans, intermarried with various ethnicities because no one ever cared about it.
- So no, we don't classify art based on ethnic origins, or nation-building artificially constructed ethnic origins. We don't call Hellenistic art as such because of specific Greek DNA, but because of artistic influences. We don't call 20th-century British art as "German" or "Germanic" because Windsors are originally German. If some Greek or pan-Germanic advocate is "proud" of it, that's their own problem. If some Turk feels proud of Turkish baths or Persian ethnonationalist feels proud of Persian art, it's also their problem. I adore all their countries and art produced there, but IMHO all such cases are equally ridiculous. Personally I don't share my earnings with the closest members of my family, and I know few distinguished scientists and professors whose children are total disaster. And you think that you share something or someone will have higher opinion of you or your desired collective (tribe, nation, etc.) if some artist in distant history and distant areas produced a fine piece of artwork? Well, my friend, guess again. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:06, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- @LouisAragon: I would like to inform you that I have nothing to do with the former Soviet Union or the current President of Azerbaijan. I can even tell you more, I do not know what political (historical) views the President of Azerbaijan has. (lol) I try to contribute to the development of Wikipedia by simply passing on information I know. Your aggression against the President of Azerbaijan is also incomprehensible to me. (lol) You say that I did not write a lot of correct information, but you do not show concrete facts. Last time, I asked you to indicate which picture I made a mistake in the description / name, in which case I can explain my opinion, thus clarifying that I or you do not know any information correctly.I am very surprised that you comment on Azerbaijan based on the views of Armenian and Iranian historians. It's like reading Ukrainian history in Russian books. (lol) --Sefer azeri (talk) 08:01, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Orijentolog: I completely agree with your opinion! However, I am very interested in what do you think is the basis for my claim that this or that art object was made by an Azerbaijani person? It would be foolish to claim that a nation formed in the 15th century created something in the 12th century or earlier. However, this does not mean that there was no culture in Azerbaijan before the 15th century. No matter what you call it, Iran, Arabic, the Caucasus, there has always been culture in these areas. --Sefer azeri (talk) 08:09, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry to disappoint you, but LouisAragon's comment ain't the view of "Armenian and Iranian historians" but of worldwide scholarship. I came from a region with many analogies, for example you can see that "Croatian language is the standardized variety of the Serbo-Croatian pluricentric language" which is a fact accepted by worldwide scholarship and used in virtually all Wikipedias. Except one, Croatian Wikipedia, where they claim that their language is completely distinctive from Serbian and that Serbo-Croatian is a form of "linguistic genocide" (LOL). Croatian POV about their language and Azerbaijani POV of their history is actually being ridiculed worldwide, and many people in those two countries found hard to accept that their view is incorrect.
- On the other hand, that doesn't mean we'll tolerate anti-Azerbaijani crap here. I personally reverted one Azerbaijani user who was making such mistakes, and I explained him why. Obviously he don't know about that subject, but I do. There have been also claims on Wikipedias that all Caucasian carpets are actually "Armenian" on the basis that they're older people. It's also a total BS and won't be tolerated. Anyway, who cares how old ethnicities are, Greeks are older than Swedes but no one has higher opinion about their country because of it. Sentinelese may be the oldest people, a big "wow" for them. :)
- Regarding your question, precisely yesterday I was giving an advice to fellow editor: if there's some 18th-centry carpet from Mosul, city of Arab Iraq with many Kurds, it uses Persian knot and artist's name sounds very Armenian, just put it under Anatolian (aka Turkish) where it indeed should be. You see, art history scholarship can also be pro-Turkish, anti-Arab, anti-Kurdish, anti-Persian and anti-Armenian in the same time. The same goes for modern examples like Iranian filmmakers in France. It's French cinema, not Iranian. Plain and simple.
- And I'll repeat for the end: I don't have any issue with claims of Republic of Azerbaijan present on Azerbaijani Wikipedia, as long as it does not affect outside projects like Commons and Wikidata. Here I identified and organized thousands of Safavid and Qajar buildings and artworks, and if inside your or someone else's mind it's "Azerbaijani" I'm fine with it. The same goes for any "proud" other irrelevant individual. There are also Lada owners who perceive the Ferrari racing team as "their own", so what can I do. :) --Orijentolog (talk) 14:27, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- Dear @Orijentolog: , I am fascinated by your ability to analyze and explain and totally agree with you! About LouisAragon's comment, in my opinion, George Bournoutian, Stephan Astourian, Siavash Lornejad,Ali Doostzadeh and other such researchers should not be cited as main reference to Azerbaijan's history or culture. In the meantime, in order not to confuse you, let me note that when I say Azerbaijani culture or history, I do not mean the history or culture of today's Azerbaijanis. Representatives of more than 60 nations live in Azerbaijan, and all these nations have a role in shaping the history and culture of the area. --Sefer azeri (talk) 07:04, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- You're welcome. If you're personally concerned about statements by historians above, I'll help you little more to develop your thinking: it's an indisputable fact that there's indeed a modern, basically artificially constructed nation, which bears a name which starts with A. Their name originate from other language, officially used by other older nation, and even their national language is literally taken from yet other older nation. They live on land de facto occupied from other older peoples who lived there for centuries, and still exist today. A nation with no ancient, nor even medieval history, and worldwide scholarship agree it is true. Funny, isn't it? :) Yeah, they do have a sort of national culture, but their culture is actually mixture of other national cultures. Origin of all of their artists, without a singe exception, can be traced to other older nations. Still no laughing? There's more! Recently they lost a war against a smaller mountain nation whose name also starts with A. :)))
- If you're irked, don't be. First of all, facts are facts. Secondly, I was speaking about Americans and Australians, their Latin and Italian original names, their English language, their Indian and Aboriginal lands, their histories and cultures, and their war in Afghanistan. Are they irked, do they care? Do I care? Do you care? Do world cares? :) --Orijentolog (talk) 01:59, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!
[edit]Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
