Multiple selection
Hi. I think it would be a great improvement for tools like flickr2commons, petscan, and maybe other if they will allow users to do multiple selection via Shift+click [to start/end selection] in the list of items (frequently thousands) shown on result page. For F2C this is especially useful - users might want to exclude directly any potential FOP-problematic images or any other unwanted images. They are frequently consecutive and a multiple selection feature would be very helpful. But F2C has also another problem - working on big sets of images may cause some troubles sometimes; besides the missing multiple selection feature, if from a large set of images many already were transferred to Commons, currently they anyway are shown on result page and this makes it harder to do a good selection work, reviewing better the images which can be transferred.[1] XXN, 19:54, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Crop tags
In a case or 2 or 3, it seems you haven't looked very carefully at an image before crop tagging it, or the crop you tagged for had already been done. Otherwise good work. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 13:45, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
Couple of questions
Hi! I remember some years ago here at Commons existed the gadget to upload all the files from one category in one click. And I had it activated. But I can't find nothing like this now. It still exist? Or something same? Second: do you have some lessons or instructions about your tools in one place? 'cos I can see that it is something great but I don't know where to start with for example Commons tools? --Shakko (talk) 16:20, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

International trucks
There is a discussion on this page whether images should be categorised as International trucks or International Harvester trucks. Not many wikipedia contributors have contributed to the discussion or voted with their preference, but you have contributed to material on International Harvester. I would be grateful, if you have the time, if you would share your own opinion on the page name. And thank you. Eddaido (talk) 00:30, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Can't allow OAuth Uploader
Hello, people in the OAuth talk were suggesting to ask you about this issue since you are the author of Flickr2Commons. When I try to allow OAuth to do the necessary operations for Flickr2Commons to work, I get the following error: Error retrieving token: mwoauthdatastore-request-token-not-found. Do you have any ideas what is wrong and what can I do?--Decan (talk) 13:45, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- This is a known issue. The tool will work, just ignore the error message. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:15, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
CommonsDelinker does not remove captions in infoboxes (if there was one)
To Magnus Manske,
I've noticed that the user User:CommonsDelinker does not remove the existing caption in the infoboxes. Hence I have removed two captions of deleted photos as they do not show up on the pages.
CommonsDelinker, in my view, should also remove infobox captions as well as the deleted photos so that Wikipedia users won't manually delete them. The only way to do that is to carefully modify it but you may not be the bot operator.
Thanks, Iggy the Swan (talk) 10:32, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
CommonsDelinker removing links prior to the files being deleted from Commons (was: File:406e1-020493cosantanastasio.jpg)
Hi Magnus. Judging by this query, CommonsDelinker has replaced File:406e1-020493cosantanastasio.jpg across a swathe of different wikis. On en:Trieste–Opicina tramway at least, it did this with the comment because: no permission. But the file still exists on Commons and there is absolutely no indication on its Commons page of any permission issues with it, or its OTRS ticket. Indeed you yourself seem to have transferred it to Commons from the Italian Wikipedia back in 2008. What is going on?. -- Chris j wood (talk) 13:43, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Ok. Eight hours after I wrote the above message, and over 24 hours after CommonsDelinker delinked the file, the file was deleted from Commons, and the deletion gives a trail as to why this happened. But the description of CommonsDelinker says that it just removes links to files deleted at Wikimedia Commons, not that it uses some form of precognition to remove links to files that are about to be deleted. And it says that if you want to know why your file has been deleted, you may ask the Commons' Administrator who deleted it, which clearly isn't particularly useful advice if the file has not yet been deleted. Seems like the description of CommonsDelinker needs updating to explain the circumstances in which links may be removed prior to the files being deleted, and how to discover why in these circumstances. -- Chris j wood (talk) 11:14, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- You sound angry. My bot can't see the future. It reacted to something that happened on Commons. Maybe you saw a stale cache? Maybe the image was deleted, then undeleted, then deleted again for good? --Magnus Manske (talk) 10:49, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- This was not a delete of the picture, but a replacemnt. Afaik these replacements are done by commands entered by an administrator. It is logical he does that before removing the old image. However it would be handy if the bot would put something in the edit comment like 'requested by <admin>'. Akoopal (talk) 23:43, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

I encountered an upload limit not too long ago that Flickr2Commons said that I had to wait an unspecified amount of time and come back because I uploaded too much, how many images are that at a time? And how long do I have to wait? Firefox in ligurischer Sprache

how have your figured out, that there are more than 2 people on this photo?
What do you think about automatically removing images from Wikidata which have the tag Crop for Wikidata?

Wrong substitutions on it.wiki
Hello! I just wanted you to be aware of these wrong substitutions that the CommonsDelinker made on it.wiki (I didn't know that you were the current operator) the last year.
Furthermore, the bot has just made a different type of error (the second substitution in the edit). I think it should check that the filename is preceded by a character in a range like [:=|]

Hilferuf
In folgendem snippet
getToolName: function ( code ) { // TODO can be extended var toolList = [ "openoffice", "libreoffice", "sodipodi", "inkscape", "QGIS", "MATLAB", "Gnuplot", "CorelDRAW", "Illustrator"]; var toolName = ""; var i = toolList.length; while (i--) { if ( code.indexOf( toolList[i] ) + 1 ) { toolName = toolList[i]; break; } } return toolName; },
-- sarang♥사랑 05:47, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hm, statt
var toolName = "";
einfach
var toolName = "Unknown tool";
var i = toolList.length-1;
- auch Teil-Strings findet, z.B. "tra" findet "Illustrator"
- case-sensitiv ist
Gegenvorschlag:
getToolName: function ( code ) { // TODO can be extended let toolList = [ "openoffice", "libreoffice", "sodipodi", "inkscape", "QGIS", "MATLAB", "Gnuplot", "CorelDRAW", "Illustrator"]; let tmp = toolList.filter ( tool => code.toLowerCase()==tool.toLowerCase() ) ; return tmp.length == 0 ? "Unknown tool" : tmp[0] ; }
--Magnus Manske (talk) 17:26, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
Glacial response from OAuth uploader validation
Hi MM. Not sure whether you can check the validation process, however, seems to be taken greater than 5 minutes for me to get OAuth response, and longer to step through the entire validation process. From the outside one cannot see where the issue lies. I have tried both Firefox and Chrome for same tardy response. Not sure whether you can do or see something. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:54, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

File:Toronto Odd Man Out1.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Thanks for uploading File:Sminthopsis douglasi.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Sminthopsis douglasi.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

My changes to photo: do you consider them acceptable?
Hello Magnus, I undertook what I felt was a modest improvement to your very illustrative photo of a tank next to the Kilcoy RSL Club in Queensland, File:Australian Army Leopard 1 tank, Kilcoy (Qld.) RSL.jpg. Someone has reverted the image on the grounds that my edit is an overwrite.
I had thought I was within the bounds of the guidance at Commons:Overwriting existing files, including this section:
DO overwrite Minor improvements
As a general rule, use the link "Upload a new version of this file" only for relatively minor improvements. Examples include:
... minor and uncontroversial color correction, noise reduction, perspective correction etc. removal of a watermark ... minor rotation corrections of images that are not upright minor cropping.
What's your opinion on this, please? I certainly don't want to cause you any offence. Your advice would be appreciated. SCHolar44 (talk) 11:02, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Sije (talk) 19:12, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:SaulBellowcropped.jpg
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:SaulBellowcropped.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!
Hi
Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.
Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).
We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.
The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.
Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.
Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Do you support the idea of FileImporter/FileExporter?
It might deprecate your CommonsHelper tool. Calvinkulit (talk) 07:17, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
- Oh yes I do, though the people who made it say it's not supposed to be a replacement. Less tools = less maintenance = me like --Magnus Manske (talk) 07:18, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- At least it doesn't need OAuth, unlike CommonsHelper (and imagecopy.py). Calvinkulit • t • c 07:52, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019! Please help with this survey.
Dear Magnus Manske,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2019, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 210K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 40 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.
To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.
Kind regards,

CommonsDelinker - move cat
Hi Magnus Manske
I wanted to move Euro banknote colour changing printing to Euro banknote optically variable printing. I have added th request on 2019-12-03, but the files weren't moved. It's not that the 4 images would be a big problem, I just wonder what the problem is. Does the bot not move images out of no longer existing categories (I deleted the category when I added the move request)? I read Move cat but maybe I missed some information.
--D-Kuru (talk) 10:09, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
- The files are moved now. The files weren't moved by CommonsDelinker, but by Achim55. So I still have no idea why the bot did not move the images. --D-Kuru (talk) 16:50, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

image on wikipedia entry for margaret cavendish
Hi Magnus,
The image you uploaded on the Margaret Cavendish page in Wikipedia does not represent her. According to her biography, Mad Madge, it is an image of Mary Lucas, her sister. Is it possible to remove it? It is misleading as is. This is the link to the image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Margaret_Cavendish.jpg
Thanks!

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Emma Wengberg.jpg
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Emma Wengberg.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Hello, I'm trying to use the Commons API in a web app but it seems that CORS is not enabled. I haven't found documentation neither the repo on your GitBucket, if there is a more appropriate place for the discussion please let me know. Also, is it possible to get the results in JSON rather than HTML? And finally, is it possible to get the same informations using the Wikimedia API? thank you!

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.A1Cafel (talk) 03:09, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Starter kit for smaller wikis
Hello, and greetings! As part of a Starter kit project for smaller wikis, there is a work-in-progress guide around Bots & Tools here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools. I'm reaching out with a few questions, as there is a mention of the CommonsDelinker on this page in the list of useful bots section:
- Is it okay to have the bot listed in that section? Are there any concerns?
- Would you be okay with folks from smaller wikis reaching out to you for help, and would you be willing to list your preferred method of contact under "Bot owner contact"?
- Is there anything like a note or reminder related to the bot that you would like to add in the "description" column?
Additionally, if you have a suggestion for any other bots or tools currently on the list which should not be there and those that are not there and should be there, I would love to know about them—looking forward to your input! Srishti (talk) 07:48, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
