Please do not overwrite images
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. I notice that you have uploaded Image:Canadians vimy ridge.jpg and at the same time replaced an older one. I think you should know that this is only allowed when the two images are almost exactly alike. Here in Commons we would like to host as many different, useful versions as possible for Wikimedia projects to choose from. I have restored your image to an older version, but I hope you will upload your fine image with another name. Thank you, and happy editing! Samulili (talk) 12:34, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi, i'm a little worried about the copyright of this image : it's a great photo, but if the Canadian War Museum made the photo, then don't they retain copyright ? It looks quite a recent photo. If so we can't use it on Commons, but we could use a small version on the EN Wikipedia article page under the Fair Use clause, to illustrate the article, as this specimen is probably close to unique. regards, Rod Rcbutcher (talk) 11:50, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Great shot, but I am not sure that the condition that you have attached to its usage is permitted by COM:L (a license used on the Commons cannot require that the creator be notified every time that the image is used). I might be wrong on this, so I have raised the issue over at Commons talk:Licensing#File:Canadian National Vimy Memorial - .Mother Canada.JPG. I wanted to let you know so that you can add your two cents. --skeezix1000 (talk) 18:20, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
File:A._Y._Jackson_-_Ypres.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:55, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

block request
While have no problem blocking a problem I suggest in the future that you post to COM:AN/B to get a quick response. In the specific case and since you posted me the note it appears the person has entered into the discussion and is working positively towards a resolution, in fact I think that if I was to block now it would cause two problems the main one is that the co-operation would probably not occur, secondly it would now be a punative action as its some hours since the person made any edits. Hello. I'm not quite sure why you emptied out this category, as doing so removed the images from the Category:Paintings by museum and category:Paintings in Canada category trees. Am I missing something here? Also, it isn't considered good practice to simply blank an empty category -- if it is incorrectly named, it should be redirected, and if it doesn't serve a purpose, it should be nominated for deletion. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:08, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- The images are almost entirely from the Beaverbrook collection. I moved the sub cat of Category:Beaverbrook Collection of War Art directly under Category:War art at the Canadian War Museum to decrease the tree as it relates to Category:Canadian War Museum. I hadn't gotten around to nominating Category:Paintings in the Canadian War Museum for deletion yet.--Labattblueboy (talk) 15:22, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- I am not sure why it matters that the images are almost entirely from the Beaverbrook collection. That's a separate category tree. Even if the Beaverbrook collection were made up solely of paintings, which I don't understand it to be, Category:Beaverbrook Collection of War Art should be a subcat of Category:Paintings in the Canadian War Museum, so the images of this paintings remain in applicable category trees. "Decreasing the tree" is not done at the expense of removing items from other applicable category trees (in this case, removing images of paintings from all category trees pertaining to paintings). --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:32, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- The collection contains paintings, drawings, lithographic works, etc. So you are correct that the collection contains more than simply paintings. I guess we could located Category:Beaverbrook Collection of War Art under both Category:Paintings in the Canadian War Museum and Category:War art at the Canadian War Museum. That work for you? Seems like over duplication given there are only two pieces or three pieces (to my knowledge) that aren't part of the collection but located in the war museum.--Labattblueboy (talk) 15:50, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- You're absolutely correct. Not only would it be duplication, it would violate COM:OVERCAT. Also, given that the collection contains more than paintings, Category:Beaverbrook Collection of War Art should not be included in Category:Paintings in the Canadian War Museum. I am not sure what is wrong with the current structure. There is no problem with an image being included in more than one subcat (as long as it applies) of Category:War art at the Canadian War Museum, as long as the subcats are not redundant of one another (which is not the case here). --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:49, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello. Why did you remove so many files from this category? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:52, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, it appears that you have simply added the intermediary category related to the Canadian War Memorials Fund, which is great, but just to confirm that collection is limited to WWI? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:54, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Correct, the works produced through the Canadian War Memorials Fund are WWI works only.--Labattblueboy (talk) 18:56, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Great. BTW, what was the CWMF (just out of curiosity)? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'm actually in the midst of writing the article for it. The CWMF was the program through which Canada commissioned its artist during WWI. The Canadian government paid their salary, provided them with rank and the CWMF paid for all of their expenses and took ownership of the works. Although technically a privately funded charity (it had a charity board), the CWMF was managed by the Canadian War Records Office in London. The initial intent was for all the CWMF works to be placed in dedicated purposed gallery after the war, but that never came to be. Instead their ownership passed the National Gallery, which transferred some to the war museum and retained some for their own collection (ed works my David Milne, William Orpen and Arthur Lismer).--Labattblueboy (talk) 16:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Mount Lidgbird.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Mount Lidgbird.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hello. I usually agree with Jim's logic, but I am not sure I do so in this case. In any event, I've left a brief note on his talk page questioning the use of U.S. copyright law to make a determination on Commonwealth copyright law, and we'll see what happens. I'll let you know. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:10, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- Yes. Thanks for the note. I usually start with a note on the deleting admin's talk page, so went that route. I did check to see if an undeletion request had been initiated (and you hadn't done so yet), but it took me awhile (2 days?) to complete the note on Jim's page (mainly because I dug up statutory references from the 1920s) and I didn't think to recheck when I finally posted it. I felt kind of stupid when Jim pointed it out to me. Oh well. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 22:03, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- I sent emails to historic monuments & veterans affairs Canada asking for a ruling on ownership of copyright on this. The former did not reply, the latter say they will investigate. Rcbutcher (talk) 04:03, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 03:28, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
WWI memorial images
I was waiting for the deletion discussions to close. It would have been nice to have the chance to comment at the village pump (copyright) discussion before you went ahead and nominated all those images for deletion. How many did you nominate in total? What I'm wondering is whether it is possible to upload local copies to en-Wikipedia? Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 00:10, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note on my talk page. Sorry to take so long to reply. I have responded at the deletion nominations you made for the Arras Memorial and the Arras Royal Flying Corps Memorial. That took quite a while. Would it be possible to bundle such nominations in future if they are of the same memorial? Also, I would still like to have a much more detailed discussion with those interested in this topic, as I think there are some nuances that are being missed. Someone like Skeezix1000 if they are around would be one editor I would like to discuss some of this with. There are others as well, but I want to try and take this slowly and make sure nothing obvious gets missed. I've not contested the deletion nominations of the photos taken at the Neuve-Chapelle memorial, though I'd still like to get the opinions of Skeezix and others if possible as some are of inscriptions and lists of names, and I'm not sure what the verdict should be there. Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 02:19, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
- I think the approach we should take is to move those images that will be used in article to wikipedia. I think the approach of dealing with deletions one subject/article at a time is likely best. Thus we could first move those images that are in articles to wikipedia before processing a deletion request. that way the articles are only affected in a limited fashion. I'll got at it one article at a time, taking particular care for those articles at the FA, A, and GA levels. I am going to start with those subjects which I put forward for deletion and once done those start anew. I'll do future ones as category request and give you a heads up.--Labattblueboy (talk) 02:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of my pictures : [fr:Mémorial de Neuve-Chapelle]
Hey, Labattblueboy
I don't understand why my 4 pictures have been deleted and not these one in the english version [1]
Thank you for your help. Regards. FK (Felouch Kotek (talk) 16:40, 30 January 2014 (UTC))
- Felouch, unfortunately a number of deletion requests in het commons over the past 6 months have led to the general conclusion that CGWC memorials are subject to copyright in France as there is no clear demonstration that the architects and sculptors ever gave up their copyright, and in France there is no freedom of panorama. The copyright requirements for the Commons are different than those for Wikipedia so I uploaded the images to Wikipedia English, which is why they show there.--Labattblueboy (talk) 20:54, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!
- ⧼Wikibase-terms/Archive1⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Copyright status: File:TohonoOOdhamNationflag.png
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:TohonoOOdhamNationflag.png.
Thank you. |
No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 17:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:TohonoOOdhamNationflag.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File tagging File:TohonoOOdhamNationflag.png
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:TohonoOOdhamNationflag.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Deleted pictures
Hi, Labattblueboy, you have used a picture on the English Wikipedia. It’s a picture I maded of Pozieres British Cemetary (file: Pozieres British Cemetary and Memorial.jpg). However, I have used the same picture on the dutch Wikipedia (Belgium) and that picture is deleted on January the 16, 2014. Can you explain me why is that? I believed that this picture is only a non-free picture in the country of origin (picture is taken in France) but can be uploaded on the Dutch or English Wikipedia. Best Regards --Wernervc (talk) 11:52, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
- The image was deleted from the commons because copyright applied in France and thus not eligible for th commons. I uploaded it to english Wikipedia because freedom of panorama does not apply to that region.--Labattblueboy (talk) 04:14, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
