Hello, Gerd.Seyffert!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Images of Euro coins

[edit]

Please stop uploading images of Euro coins. The national sides of Euro coins are, with few exceptions, copyrighted to the nations of origin. See Commons:Currency for more information. I am going through all of your coin uploads right now and tagging them as I find them. I'll post more about this later. In the mean time, please stop uploading these images. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:32, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged the following images for deletion as copyright violations:

...more coming. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:41, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

38 of your 39 Euro coin uploads have now been tagged for speedy deletion as copyright violations. The only exception is File:Finland 2012 Helene Schjerfbeck.jpg, which per Commons:Currency#Finland is acceptable. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:24, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

STOP

[edit]

You are continuing to upload copyrighted images despite request above that you stop. If you continue to upload copyright violating images, you may be blocked. Please STOP what you are doing and respond to the threads on this talk page and/or to the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vatikan City 2012 Milan.jpg. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:43, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]

Herby talk thyme 15:59, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hammersoft, could you ask for me to be unblocked, please? I wouldn't like to remain persona non grata at Commons. As I told you ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Gerd.Seyffert), I have no intention to cause any more problems, and the ones which occured were not on purpose. Regards--Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 08:49, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Hammersoft! No problem whatsoever besides the problem how to make the Eurocrats realise that there is an absurd legal situation concerning the copyright of national Euro coin's images. Germany for example mints up to 30 million of each of its 2 Euro commemorative coins, publishes the images - and still there should be a copyright violation if somebody publishes a scan of it's image? Are Finland and Estonia the only Euro-countries without restrictions? I would like to get the ball rolling... Could you possibly pass me some detailed information about existing countrywise restrictions? I would like to inform the German National Bank first. Keep going, --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 23:16, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • It might seem absurd on the face of it, but there are things that cloud the waters. For example, many of the national sides of Euro coins contain original works of art. These original works are frequently things the artists have been paid for to produce. Copyright gets very complicated in such cases. The number of reproductions of something has no effect on its copyright status. The best place to start is Commons:Currency. There you will find a list of all countries for which we have confirmed copyright status of their currency (be it free or not). Finland and Estonia are free to use. There are at least two other cases (France and Germany) where the case is questionable. But, we can't post the Euro coin images here from either country without actual confirmation they are free. We can't assume. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:31, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Could you please update this file? There have been a lot of changes since your last update. Thanks in advance! Comandante~nlwiki (talk)

There were just two edits relevant for the map: from Estonia on March 9th and from Spain on 23 March. Sorry for the moderate delay... --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 15:51, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the adjustment. But what about Latvia (who have just like Estonia 13), Malta (who have 22) and Slovenia (who have 17)? Comandante~nlwiki (talk) 17:03, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are absolutely right! I missed the changes of Malta on 2 August, Latvia on 20 and Slovenia on 25 Oct. 2021... Just uploaded a new file and hope the rest is okay! Very grateful for your supervision! --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 17:55, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Could you please update this file again? Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Greece & Portugal need an adjustment. Again thanks in advance! Comandante~nlwiki (talk) 17:40, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I did not realize that I wasn't logged in - so whenever I tried to update since 1 July it read "you cannot override this file"... The penny dropped eventually. and the updates are done now. I will also make the colour 33 to 36 coins visible. --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 18:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

European Union commemorative 2 euro coins by number.png / .svg

[edit]

Hello,

I created a vectorial version of your map "European Union commemorative 2 euro coins by number.png" and tried to replace it in several Wikipedia pages; I noticed you reverted all my edits because the new version lacked some details, so I tried to improve it. Do you think it's okay now or you suggest other things to change? --GiAnMMV 14:18, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, why are you not satisfied with png? There are a lot of details in your basic svg version, which don't correspond with the real geography. For example, the Dardanelles or the three peninsulas of Athos, among many others. The depiction of some Greek islands are essential to realize that the Agaen Sea is Greek. Ceuta or Dekelia on Cyprus are depicted on my png version and the higher resolution is necessary to decipher these details. I beg you to not interfere again with a svg map of your making! Thank you for your understanding! Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 14:39, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And one more remark: I was not able to revert your edit in the Chinese Wikipedia. If you are fluent in Mandarin, please revert it yourself and correct the wrong colours, which do not correspond with the actual map. Thank you very much!--Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 14:56, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo again - you mentioned that you tried to improve the svg map and ask, whether it's okay now. Where is that version uploaded? I can't find it on English or German Wikipedia...--Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 14:50, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's on Commons, I didn't replace it on Wikipedia.
You can find it here. GiAnMMV 15:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's much better now, but still... Why do you invest your time just to replace png with svg?? The ones who are interested in the map "Euro coins by number" don't bother. And for me who updated numerous new versions in the last decade (by the way: with your edit, the history of the uploads is erased and the dates of change vanish) it is easier to have the colours of only some relevant islands altered than dozens of tiny spots. For example: Mallorca is relevant, not the other Belearic islands. The main Faroe island should be clearly visible, because it is an autonomous territory. So is the isle of Man, but all other islands belonging to Great Britain are irrelevant, as are the various islands along the coast of Norway. On your new svg version, I do not realize, that Dekelia on Cyprus isn't part of the Eurozone. Euboea's south-eastern part and Athos's "fingers" as the Dardanelles still seem to be islands on your map.
Again: Why do you need to replicate as svg what is alredy settled as png?? Are you a shareholder of svg Co.?
Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 15:48, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
SVG is way easier to edit: you can open it as a text file and modifying one single number you can change the color of a whole Country, including all the islands. On Wikimedia Commons the use of the SVG format for graphs and maps is encouraged since they have several advantages, especially when they're frequently updated like this one.
Thank you for the reports by the way, I'll try fixing the things you said.
Anyways the history isn't erased, your file won't be deleted. --GiAnMMV 16:31, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm an old geezer -therefore I never edited svg. But I am curious what you will present at Commons. For many years I also took care of the Commons 2€ commemorative coins article, but I kind of retired... Please send me a note when your editing is done for now! Good luck!
Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 16:44, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that the colour of the sea(s) in the svg version is light grey instead of white. This lower contrast ist regrettable! Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 18:30, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They're not grey, they're transparent. When displayed on a Wikipedia page they take are white. GiAnMMV 08:10, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The two lakes each inside Sweden and Russia (close to Finland) are to be depicted as the rest of the country: grey colour CCC2CC, not white!--Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 22:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you think Akrotiri and Dhekelia are relevant for the purpose of this map, do you think I should also add Gibraltar, Jersey and Guernsey? --GiAnMMV 15:52, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are right with Gibraltar! I missed that! Jersey and Guernsey are irrelevant after Brexit (the much bigger isle of Man I depicted nevertheless). By the way, Stockholm is not situated besides a huge fjord as it seems to be! That part of Sweden looks very strange on your svg map. Besides that, I would erase the two tiny Swedish islands, also the third, small Estonian isle. There is no gain in knowledge with them. I'm looking forward to your next version! Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 08:32, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The new map looks very nice with the black lines!! But: The grey circle for Gibraltar stands out, connecting Europe and Afrika (in reality, Gibraltar is situated to the north-east, north of Ceuta). Very important in my opinion: cirles should only make Euro coins emitting micro states more visible, to live up to the purpose of this map. Therefore it was wrong, that Liechtenstein was depicted with a circle on my png map! Liechtenstein as well Faroer, Gibraltar, Dekelia and Akrotiri should be depicted following their shape, surrounded by black lines (Akrotiri is just a small airbase and will then be a tiny black dot, nearly invisible - so be it). I kindly ask you to alter these items! And a last remark: I miss Karpathos, the island between Crete and Rhodes... Then the svg map should replace my png map at Wikipedia websites! I still have to figure out how to edit a new version of a svg map, because on 4 July Portugal will get the same colour as France... Thank you very much for your efforts, GiAn! --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 10:21, 29 June 2024 (UTC)for your efforts, GiAn![reply]
