Deleted photo of John K. Byrne

Hi there - you deleted the photo of me that was here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:John_K._Byrne.jpg

I began working on getting the email from the copyright holder, but since the photo is deleted, I'm not sure it would even work to email the volunteer team. What should I do? I can't include the link to the photo in the email since it has been deleted.

Thank you. JByrne404 (talk) 16:12, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

@JByrne404 Continue with the process and email the volunteer team. They will confirm that the license is valid and then request the file be undeleted Gbawden (talk) 06:40, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Only we didn't get an email back. Should we expect to receive an email with further instructions? JByrne404 (talk) 20:33, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Recent DR closure

Hi! I owe you a quick explanation so that you may rephrase your closing comment on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Logo Fox Sports Argentina 2023.png. There was a {{Copyvio}} on the page and I converted it to DR. Turelio just deleted logo seconds after I made DR. Original uploader then uploaded same file under same filename, so it seems like it wasn't deleted at all. Maybe you should rewrite that comment. Thanks, A09 (talk) 15:13, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Fasowa7984 files

You just beat me to this speedy deletion. I was not planning to delete ːFile:Nora-Fatehi-1-17.jpg and File:Nikki-Tamboli-4-1.jpg, however, as Bollywood Hungama works are generally {{Cc-by-3.0-BollywoodHungama}} per the VRT ticket cited therein. Could you take a look and consider restoring these two? Эlcobbola talk 19:04, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Elcobbola. My bad. I thought it best to whack all those files and warn him. I have restored these 2. Gbawden (talk) 05:44, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

cat removal

mentioning this only in case you did similarly elsewhere & might want to check: at [1] you removed Category:Music industry rather than refine it. When that was added, we did not yet have Category:Music industry executives, which I've now added to the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Watchlist

Hi Gbawden,

Did the tip about watchlist filters on my talk page help you out? (Do you have special powers as an Admin re watchlist filters? Krok6kola (talk) 14:23, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Krok6kola Hi. We don't have special powers unfortunately ː)
That tip worked like a charm. I had to change my watchlist settings to watch categories and now I see any changes in a cat. It is helping me watch for copyvios Gbawden (talk) 06:33, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

File:Mizmaar in 2015.JPG

Hi Gbawden. Would you mind checking to see whether File:Mizmaar in 2015.JPG is the same as File:Kashan Admani, Alfred D'Mello, and Mashhad Sharyar of Mizmaar on the band's official poster.jpg that you deleted in August 2020 per Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kashan Admani, Alfred D'Mello, and Mashhad Sharyar of Mizmaar on the band's official poster.jpg? The uploader is the same and the file's description also seems to be the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

@Marchjuly Hi. No not the same. But I have opened a DR for that file as I found it online before the upload date Gbawden (talk) 09:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for checking on this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:43, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

LC TIF images with categorized JPGs

@Gbawden. This File:Remnant of Armenian family LCCN2014706355.tif had the category above added by you. However, the .jpg version of this file had only hidden categories and the category "Files from Flickr (uncategorized 2016)." I wondered if "LC TIF images with categorized JPGs" should have uncategorized .jpg's? I have not yet checked for more files like this. I wanted to bring this to your attention, instead doing nothing. I will add categories to this rare Armenian Genocide survivors photograph that has been uncategorized on Commons for 6 years. Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 00:55, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Ooligan. I think I moved that file although the jpg file had not yet been properly categorised. Thanks for your help with this - there are thousands of useful LCCN images lying uncategorised Gbawden (talk) 06:38, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I have found 100's of Library of Congress (LOC) photos with related .tif files that are in the category "LC TIF images with categorized JPGs"- but these .jpg files are still uncategorized. It looks like another Commons "opportunity" needing some help. -- Ooligan (talk) 08:45, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
I found it easier to move the tiffs to that folder first and then move the jpgs later. It makes searching the uncategorized folder much easier as then you only have jpg files remaining Gbawden (talk) 08:53, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the helpful tip. -- Ooligan (talk) 17:37, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello. The File:Mikail Hossen.jpg which you deleded a few days ago (and which had been deleted in 2021 too) was reuploaded by the user again. I have nominated it for deletion and only then I noticed that it had already been deleted by you. The user uploads the images to use them for crosswiki spamming. -- Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:28, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Deletion

You just deleted File:Pallavi singh.JPG and File:Pallavi singh(4,6°).jpg by means of F10 even though they had been kept after DR discussion. Was it a mistake you’ll undo, or is it necessary to open an undeletion request? -- Tuválkin 12:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

That was a mistake on my part. Thanks Gbawden (talk) 13:45, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, but now I ask the same from @Fitindia: , who immediately deleted this photo again. -- Tuválkin 17:37, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Another deletion

Thanks for your close at Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Sakiko Miki; will you do the same, for the same reasons, also at Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Sakurako Miki? -- Tuválkin 12:54, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Additionally, concerning File:A Japanese young girl behind SUV driving steer; June 2020.jpg. I’m surprised you included this in your exceptional deletions: I remember looking at it (as the the first in the list after those stricken by Mdaniels5757) and noticing that it shows a scene we likely don’t have many other examples of: A child, alone, at the steering wheel of a real car — that’s in scope, and I planned to single out this one as one of the clear keep-worthy cases, had the discussion progressed. -- Tuválkin 12:54, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Would be nice, if you dont delete my photos.

These photos you deleted today are mine! I also published a review of this concert with this concert photos on the page "deutsche-mugge". Deletion explanation

Hello, it seems that I'm piling up another question: could you please explain reasons for deletion of files File:Antonin Jan st. Gareis 1791-1863 - Matka s ditetem v parku.jpg and File:Antonin Jan st. Gareis 1791-1863 - Podobizna damy.jpg. I haven't found any corresponding DR. I know that's been longer time (October 2020). However, I don't understand what can be bad (in the terms of copyright) about images by a painter who died in 1863 (160y ago)t. — Draceane talkcontrib. 09:15, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Draceane This was part of Commons:Deletion requests/Uploads by NGCZ - all this users uploads were deleted - it would have been impossible to link each file in the DR. Gbawden (talk) 11:30, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
OK, thank you for the explanation. I can recall that case with NGCZ, the deletion was correct then. Regards. — Draceane talkcontrib. 12:58, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Categories should be in English

Hi,

I saw you redirect here [2]. The guideline Commons:Categories#Category_names says categories should be in English. Is there something different here? Should all those files be moved now?

Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 21:11, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

I have made 2 suggestions at Category talk:Sesiones del Pleno de la Asamblea Nacional de Ecuador, to rename and subdivide by year. If we only want to subdivide and not rename, someone else has to do the translation because my Spanish level is 0. All the best, Taketa (talk) 06:08, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi. @Taketa I based that on the fact that cats like National Assembly of Ecuador were redirecting to the spanish name - I needed to do some tidying up and this seemed like a solution at the time but I agree we do need to fix the whole structure. Will comment on the talk page Gbawden (talk) 08:08, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello Gbawden, took me a month but I have finished subdividing the 42.000 files at Category:Sesiones del Pleno de la Asamblea Nacional de Ecuador by year, as per my suggestions on the talk page. Could you rename the category to English Category:Sessions of the National Assembly of Ecuador? (as per Commons:Rename a category, Unambiguous fixes, standardising the category name in line with Commons' naming conventions (currently: Latin binomial for lifeforms, usually English otherwise). I cannot rename it because it is already a redirect with a history. Thank you in advance, Taketa (talk) 21:20, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
@Taketa I removed the redirect and instead redirected the spanish name. Think I did that correctly. Well done on the work on the categoriesǃ Gbawden (talk) 09:39, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of photos

Please do not delete the photos that I upload (File:Rampage Rapper.jpg and File:38 Spesh Rapper.jpg. I am a music journalist and also a photographer, I live in New York and personally know a lot of music artists. I took the photos of Rampage and 38 Spesh myself, using an iphone. Just because you can see/find them on Instagram does not mean that I was not the one who took them. I did crop the original files for a better composition, nothing wrong with that from a journalistic perspective. Re-uploading the files back, please do not remove my work. Wikirapguru (talk) 22:55, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

@Wikirapguru If you took the photos please follow the instructions at COM:OTRS. Previously published files need permission to keep on Commons - anyone can claim to be the owner - we need confirmation of this Gbawden (talk) 07:36, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Occam's Razor and Wikimedia Commons

Dear Gbawden, today I saw that you have closed nomination of a set of files, depicting pre-revolutionary Iran, as keep (example: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi and Iranian national football team.jpg). The argument that you referred to for keeping the files was that "we use Occam's Razor". I could not find any reference to that among policies and guidelines of Commons and my question regarding this from the user who presented this reasoning remains unanswered. Could you please enlighten me about the basis for utilizing Occam's Razor on Commons? Frankly, I think Commons:Project scope/Evidence is contradicting such default assumptions. Thank you, HeminKurdistan (talk) 12:26, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

I see that the file was updated with "The permission applies to the photo and also the depicted painting." - I have no reason to doubt that. You can post at VTRS for clarity Gbawden (talk) 06:58, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
@Gbawden: In the deletion discussion, @Nat stated, "Nope. Permission is only for the photo and not the painting." Can we clear this up? Thanks, Gnom (talk) 08:32, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

I trust you as one of the sincere admins on this project. Please be extra careful when dealing with such kinds of deletion requests. This DR is entirely unscrupulous. I don't have access to the source site for these images, but are we sure that they remain on that site, still without any notice that they are exceptions to NOIRLab's usual licensing? If not, these could well have come from a contractor who did not authorize that license, and NOIRLab may have had no authority to license them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Jmabel I suppose it could be possible but I didn't see any evidence of that. If we find files made by a contractor we can deal with those separately Gbawden (talk) 06:32, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
So were you able to access the source site and see whether these are still there or were taken down? And if they were there, did they say anything about licensing? - 06:39, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Files like File:Giant Magellan Telescope G-CLEF instrument (7815 gmto INST GCLEF 0001).jpg were no longer available at source but clearly state CC BY in the exif. ALHENA 2023 JCH.jpg - deletion

Hello. I would like to ask you about deleting the file "ALHENA 2023 JCH.jpg". An understandable copyright concern has been raised due to the automatic tag. It was explained by me, authorship was proven, previous publication on social media was indicated, and most importantly, it was demonstrated that this photo was made available in the band's publicly available presspack under an open license. So why was the photo deleted?... Quantor (talk) 21:13, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Gbawden. Yes, I'am affraid you missed.
* Here is the photo published on social media with the appropriate license statement (I provided the link earlier): https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=729317442538206&set=a.122354146567875
* Here is a presspack with this photo inside, after unfolding there is information that the entire package is under a free license: https://alhenaband.com/download/?lang=en
These are the most important ones and this was clearly mentioned in the discussion. Quantor (talk) 16:39, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
@Quantor I don't agree with your claims but I have requested undeletion so someone else can review your claims and my decision Gbawden (talk) 18:17, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
@Gbawden Thank you. I appreciate that.
The rights to these deleted materials were really settled from the very beginning (the band is aware of these issues, after all, this is what they make a living from). Moreover, I am the author of one of the deleted photos. ;)
One more thing: May I know what exactly raises your doubts? I will be happy to clarify any confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quantor (talk • contribs) 17:02, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Any idea what is causing the error? I see you have responded to all the edit requests and they're still open? ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:46, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

I mean, I tried to close one section, the tool commented on another section. I suppose this happens because of any uneven markup. Perhaps move the introductory part out of the talk page? ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:50, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
@TheAafi Hi. Do you mean not archiving? It might be because I didn't add {{Section resolved|1=~~~~}}. Lets see if that works Gbawden (talk) 06:04, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
No. I don't refer to archiving. Edit requests usually come with some script options such as "Mark as done", and when it is clicked, the script adds a done remark and changes the status of the request. Here, I clicked done on a very different section, but the script edited on a very different section that appears at the top. It did happen with me previously and I felt this was due to uneven markup. See this, where I was responding to a different section. ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:37, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Gbawden, why this? A permission had been given and is visible in the information section of the file description. – Cheers, Mussklprozz (talk) 11:18, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Having read the uploader's discussion page now, I agree that there are serious doubts about his ownership. I therefore restored your version and withdrew the permission badge. Mussklprozz (talk) 13:41, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
The permission is valid, comes from the official contact address on the organization's page: see https://orleans.abm.fr/non-categorise/adresse.html. Sorry for the confusion. Mussklprozz (talk) 14:07, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

I think we can keep both - useful to have the original with the text for reference Gbawden (talk) 12:28, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Dear Gbawden,

Can you please reconsider the above DR and replace the old low resolution image which I took and replace it with this much higher resolution image--in the same museum--here of the same object. Then you can delete my original image as I suggested.

I believe that WikiCommons should have the highest resolution image possible and the image I took in 2008 is low quality and replacable. The key thing is replacable. Why would wikipedia use a poor quality image when there is a better quality replacement which is the point of my DR above?

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:30, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Leoboudv. You are welcome to replace your image where it is in use and the resubmit the DR Gbawden (talk) 06:51, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello Gbawden, noticing you edit, I was wondering if you have any referencess to this. Thank you for your time. Might be there is a confusion at my end. Thank you so much for your time. Lotje (talk) 07:20, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi. I did a newspapers.com search and found that he is Emmanuel Havenith - see https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1914Supp/d172
Newspapers.com is an invaluable source for categorising LCCN files - you can get access via the Wikipedia Library. My money is on this being him as diplomats were regularly photographed by Bain et al. You will also notice that the label at the top of the photo says "Minister" Gbawden (talk) 07:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Unwarranted deletion of photos

Good morning @Gbawden I would like to ask why you deleted almost all the photos from my BlueAulonocara profile? Hello @Gbawden I noticed that you have flagged this photo for deletion for "no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license". The photo is covered by the UK Government Open Government Licence (OGL 3.0), as already stated on the photo, as it was published and produced by a government body (Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the regional government for the Liverpool Region) if i can direct you to the LCRCA privacy policy page which covers their copyright [5]https://www.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/privacy-policy which states all content on the site unless expressly stated is covered by the OGL licence. Please can you remove your request to delete this photo. Many thanks Knowledgework69 (talk) 13:27, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Rugby pics

Hello Gbawden,

You flag one of my rugby pictures, and you deleted all the pictures I've uploaded on the platform. User talk:Sivolc#c-Yann-20240811213300-Copyright violations

I work with the french rugby teams and I own the original photography of everything I've uploaded. The 4 pics with EXIF, are from photographers I work with, and I can prove that they totally agree that we upload their pics for the players on Wiki.

By the way, it's a nonsense to delete all my pics (some were uploaded years ago ...) just for that. All the pics I have upload in the past were mines and I can prove it. Please, can you restore all the files or give me the procedure I need to follow to restore it? Thanks. Sivolc (talk) 13:26, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi. I left a comment on your talk page. Copyright resides with the person who took the photo. If 4 different photographers give you rights to a photo we would need 4 individual confirmations from them Gbawden (talk) 15:35, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

File:Grappling policial-jpg.tif Mistakenly removed

Hi @Gbawden i hope this message finds you well, today the picture "File:Grappling policial-jpg.tif" has been removed from wikicommons under the suspect that is not my own image. Well, it is. In the message you plead that you have seen that image on the web elsewhere. That's surely not the case, the only media that that image has been published is at the newspapper "El Mundo" from Spain, because i have given them permission.

I'm at your disposal for any further concerns, thank you for your time, have a nice day! Hugo Novoa Narro (talk) 13:01, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

@Hugo Novoa Narro Thanks for letting me know. If a photo has previously been published we need confirmation of ownership via COM:VRT - would you mind following that process please? Gbawden (talk) 13:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Commons deletion request of images, uploaded by Marketing ANKER

Hi @Gbawden, Thank you for keeping your eyes open to make Wikipedia a safe space in terms of image usage and according copyrights. As indicated on my "about me" page, I am responsible for the Marketing of the company ANKER, in which article the images are used. The pictures have been taken on the company premises and the copyrights are with ANKER. Thus, I would like to ask you to withdraw your deletion request, as the image can and should be used here in Wikipedia. Kind regards, Christine Marketing ANKER (talk) 08:05, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi Gbawden, I'm not a Commons regular so I hesitate to monkey with the templates directly. But you tagged the file File:Louis I Woolf 1972.jpg with {{No permission since}} on Sept 3rd. Under "Source" the file page links to the paper I grabbed the image from here which states "This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)" (it's mildly hard to find; you have to click "Copyright and License Information" near the top to uncollapse it). Is there any other info we need in order to document the license here? Thanks, Ajpolino (talk) 14:08, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi. In cases like this its important to give the url for the source so we can find the license. We can't to that when the source is just text. I updated it for you Gbawden (talk) 07:08, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

File:Virginio Simonelli shot by Marco Melfi.jpg

Dear Gbawden, I saw that back on September 25th you tagged the file File:Virginio Simonelli shot by Marco Melfi.jpg as missing permission. I wanted to ask you, as of today, haven't the OTRS/VRT-volunteers received the correct e-mail to know that the permission is present? As I explained to user Túrelio that initially removed the file, the person who uploaded it is truly the photographer Marco Melfi himself, and so the copyright owner of the image. One day I saw a photoshoot he did of Italian singer Virginio Simonelli and I complimented him on his work, I mentioned that Virginio's Wikipedia page had a very old picture and that one of Marco's pictures would look great on the page (because I always update the page and it's annoying to see a really old picture on it, as the one that appears now). So Marco, the photographer, actually offered to upload one of his images, and he did so by himself. After that, I linked it to the page. Then, when Túrelio removed it as a precaution because he had a doubt that it was actually the photographer that had uploaded the file, I asked Marco if he could send an e-mail to confirm his identity and he said he'd do it immediately. He was happy to have his work on Wikipedia, he considered it a homage to the community. Did he send an e-mail with enough information for you guys to verify his identity? Can I link the photo back to the page? Thank you! Ravenlions (talk) 21:25, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

@Ravenlions We need permission from the person who took the photo as they own the rights. When that permission is received the tag will be removed and the license updated Gbawden (talk) 06:21, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I understand, that is why I said the photographer sent the e-mail to give permission officially. So he did it wrong? Thank you! Ravenlions (talk) 16:26, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Virginio_Simonelli_shot_by_Marco_Melfi.jpg it seems, from what is written near the triangle warning, that the e-mail was received but still not evaluated? Thank you! Ravenlions (talk) 16:30, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Please undelete

Please undelete Commons:Deletion requests/File:Aurora Borealis, Pskov Oblast, (58,29) 11 may 2024.jpg. The reason for deletion was "the author is catearcher.ru, not uploader's work". While catearcher.ru is the uploader's website, it's the same person that keeps website and uploaded photo. "Катя Стрельникова" translates as "CateArcher". --ssr (talk) 06:47, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

@Ssr Please get the person who took the photo to send permission to COM:VRT Gbawden (talk) 06:48, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
She refuses to do so. She feels harmed by your actions and says she won't contribute anymore. She even wants to delete her other contributions (which is illegitimate). She is embarrassed by the fact that you accused her of stealing a photo that is her own and now force her to prove it.
And yes, it all looks awful! That's how you handle good contributors? Great job for you and for the WMF! --ssr (talk) 06:19, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
A copy was also sent to admin Billinghurst: User talk:Billinghurst#Please_undelete. --ssr (talk) 06:27, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
@Ssr Thats not how it works. You have to follow the VRT process before it can get undeleted Gbawden (talk) 06:37, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
No. If you make a mistake, it's your mistake, not her. You should correct your mistake to make Wikimedia working for people. "Following the process" is a bureaucracy, while the main goal is get people contributing in good will, not "following the process". --ssr (talk) 06:40, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
