A couple issues with Image:Interstate Highways.svg
[edit]The following roads are shown but are not Interstates:
- US 60 east from Phoenix, Arizona
The following Interstates are not shown:
- Western extension of I-26
- w:Interstate 39 south of I-80 and north of I-90/I-94
- w:Interstate 73
- w:Interstate 86 (east)
- w:Interstate 74 (new sections)
- w:Interstate 95 (recent addition of the New Jersey Turnpike to the Pennsylvania Turnpike)
That's just from a quick look; there may be others. Do you know if the USGS uses an azimuthal equidistant projection on its topographic maps (and if that projection allows for rotating one map to match up with a larger one)? If so, I should be able to help with the missing ones. --SPUI 23:30, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info! I'll see if I can find any of these in the data I used from nationalatlas.gov. Also, I can easily change the map projection if that helps. User:dbenbenn 23:43, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Update: My data does have w:New York State Highway 17, which is the same as 86 east; it just isn't labelled as 86 east in the data. So that will be easy to fix. Perhaps the others will turn out to be similar. User:dbenbenn 01:55, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
PNG quarters
[edit]Hello again. Did you notice that there are now two sets of PNG quarters in Category:United States quarters? What do you think of Image:Delaware quarter, reverse side, 1999.png versus Image:1999 DE Proof.png? I think the color on the first version is better (your recent upload is kind of blueish). Also, I think the longer name is better, since it's more descriptive. But I don't feel too strongly about either of those points. Your version has a transparent background, which is good. Anyway, what I do feel strongly about is that there should be only one set. What do you think?
Also, let me point out that JPG is a better format for these kinds of images, because the thumbnails are much smaller. For example, at w:50 State Quarters, all the JPG thumbnails come to roughly 200 KB. In PNG format, that might be 1.2 MB. Disk space doesn't matter, but network bandwidth still does. Using PNG images in that article could make it take about 6 times longer to download. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 15:25, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- When the images are automatically resized for articles, they turn out about the same size.
- The reason I'm doing this is because if you look at the articles, most do not have a white background, so there is an annoying outline.
- PNGs are worth it, because they are lossless. The Commons is an archive, and most (if not all) of thse images come from US Mint TIFFs.
- Well, as I said, I'm mainly concerned with the PNG duplication. Could you give me an example of an article with a non-white background? Anyway, do you mind if I move your transparent background PNGs to the previously-existing PNG titles? User:dbenbenn 17:08, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- Here: [1] It's gray, and a template. Also, mine have been cropped so there is no wasted blank space in the article.
- Thanks. So, do you mind if I move the new transparent PNG quarters to the original non-transparent PNG titles, to eliminate the duplication? User:dbenbenn 00:19, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- As long as I'm given credit for the dirtywork, I'm fine with it. --Keeleysam 17:22, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

historical US flags
[edit]Hi Jacobolus. Do you have a source for the star positions on the old US flags? For example, your Image:US flag 32 stars.svg is different from Image:US 32 Star Flag.svg, but neither version cites a source so bystanders like me can't tell which is more accurate! Thanks, User:dbenbenn 18:11, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- I got star patterns here, at fotw. FOTW tends to be pretty accurate. It would be possible to do all the historical flags in a text editor, but it would take a fair amount of work. There doesn't seem to be too much advantage... the Illustrator versions are accurate to 7 decimal places, and the total size is still only 40 k, 25 k of which is an embedded thumbnail.
- --Jacobolus 03:18, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that FOTW is usually trustworthy, but they don't seem to have much information about old US flags. For example, the 32 star flag just has a picture, no actual specification. In your version, Image:US flag 32 stars.svg, the stars are significantly smaller than in FOTW's picture. There's no need to worry about being accurate to 7 decimal places if you don't have an exact source in the first place! User:dbenbenn 04:55, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Note, most of the historical flags had no official specs, other than the number of stars, number of stripes, and a vague idea of the colors. Much of the time, there were several different flag patterns floating around, for instance, Image:US flag 20 stars - great star.svg as an alternate version for Image:US flag 20 stars.svg. But, the versions at FOTW are I believe the most popular versions that were around during each time period. All the flags I made in illustrator are most of all consistent with each-other, and with the rules which have been established for the flag more recently. Early flags had all sorts of varying aspect ratios, color schemes, some had tilted stars, some versions of the "Betsy Ross" flag had stars all pointing away from the circle center, etc. So there's no "perfectly correct" version to put up, which is why I'm not sure there's any reason to change the Illustrator versions for something else, though removing the thumbnails might be warranted if someone wants to take the time. The benefit my flags have over the other svg versions is that I don't push stars too close to the boundaries of the blue field, I stick to FOTW patterns, and I follow a consistent naming scheme. --Jacobolus 08:16, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- A real world example: Fort Sumter flag. --Jacobolus 08:27, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
My administratorship
[edit]Hi Dbenbenn, thank you for your message. Please let me know how I am doing with my new sysop-tools. with kind regards Gryffindor 11:57, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi Dbenbenn, I wanted to point out that User:Kaspersky Доверие is a sockpuppet of User:Zephram Stark. See w:User:Kaspersky Trust. All the Vladivostok photos he uploaded here can be assumed to have phoney sources. He also uploaded a bunch of duplicated images of ones that I had put on Wikipedia (that was just to annoy me). I don't really know what the policies over here are (he's banned from Wikipedia.....but I don't know if that applies here or not). Just wanted to let ya know. --JW1805 03:49, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. Zephram Stark is blocked here, too, and I guess it's well known now that Stark lies about image sources. I'll keep investigating ...
- You said at Image talk:Tarpon Springs Mural improved.jpg that you have a higher-resolution version of Image:Tarpon Springs Mural.jpg. If so, please upload it! The Commons always wants the highest resolution images we can get.
- Sure, I've been meaning to upload all my Wikipedia photos to Commons....but I haven't got around to it yet. I will do it one day (probably when I get high-speed internet)! If you can delete Zephram's duplications, that would be great. --JW1805 04:27, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed at Image talk:Tarpon Springs Mural.jpg that User:ElectricRay supported Kaspersky suspiciously quickly. I see that w:User:ElectricRay is a fairly long-time contributor who has posted to w:User talk:Zephram Stark. Possibly ElectricRay is a well-concealed sockpuppet? User:dbenbenn 04:17, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- The Commons ElectricRay could very well be a Zephram sockpuppet. (The Wikipedia ElectricRay is a slightly annoying person who is a long-time Zephram cheerleader....but I've been told that he is not actually a sockpuppet). --JW1805 04:27, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- By the way, I'm not going to speedy delete the "improved" images (Image:James Oglethorpe improved.jpg, etc); they're not really candidates. Possibly someone else will. But it might be better if you list them on Commons:Deletion requests. User:dbenbenn 04:42, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!
[edit]I noticed your question at User talk:Bastique#Grr. Yes, it's possible to have text not show in the "File history" but still be in the initial page code. Just do the following:
Real upload summary, to show in the history <followed by 256 spaces>
This stuff on the second line won't appear in the file history, but will go on the page.
The reason is that the file history only shows the first 256 characters of your upload summary. Of course, that's not very convenient; I never do it. I just do what you do, apply the tag afterwards. I've gotten deletion warnings, too. Don't worry, no one's keeping score! ;) User:dbenbenn 03:27, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, though I think I will merely continue the way I have. There needs to be a different box in my opinion for the file history note. Also, thanks for tagging Image:Xbox 01b.jpg as Commons, but I found in the XBOX cat, there was Image:Xbox 01b.jpg. How should I go about deleting this? Sorry for my noobness, but I am new to Commons really. ~Linuxerist L / T 10:52, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- You can use {{Speedydelete}} to get an image deleted. User:dbenbenn 15:33, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Page move rollback
[edit]Hi Gábor. Thanks for moving my talk page back. I notice you had a little trouble. Perhaps you're unaware of one of the admin tools, page move rollback. In a user's page move log you get "revert" links, which automatically fill in the correct destination field. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 20:34, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hello David. Indeed, I was not aware of that, and I was actually planning to complain to the devs about the lack of such a function. This is very useful. Thanks for telling me :)
- In the meantime, I think you should move-protect your pages. Not so much edit protect, as that might have its uses, but who would move a user's page anyway, especially without their consent? —UED77 20:44, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- They were protected before, but I unprotected them. My idea is the following: if a vandal decides to move my talk page, I'll see it immediately and catch him. On the other hand, if he can't move it, he might go vandalize something else, something that actually matters, or something that will take longer to find. I'm happy to use my talk page as a honeypot. User:dbenbenn 20:46, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- That makes sense. I'll leave mine unprotected as well. Take care. —UED77 20:51, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

FYI re New York
[edit]Re New York, I'm happy to take Wikipedia's lead and use "New York City" and "New York" for the state plus redirect for those seeking New York City / New York, New York; so as Orgullobot now seems to be online, I'll be looking to ask to merge/rename...
...as well as any other similar non-redirected "New York State" categories I find. Consistency also suggests that Category:New York, New York would become Category:New York City...
Best wishes, David Kernow 12:37, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, okay. I certainly won't argue with that! User:dbenbenn 15:31, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your patience while I work out what works. I've just left the above requests at User talk:Orgullobot/commands (per my reading of the documentation) and, for those folk arriving at New York categories looking for New York City, will add links to New York City categories once the requested moves have occurred. Best wishes, David 23:03, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

- While it would be impossible for anyone prove that they "took the photos," I can prove that I am the sole owner of these photos. I have the one and only set of original lossless tiff masters that these jpegs were created from. I can upload a master of any file you want to prove that to you. That master will not have the compression patterns of the jpeg files, nor will it have the gamma correction of the jpeg files. There is no way to accurately recreate the parts that are lost in translating a tiff to a jpeg. If you were to unban me so that I could upload one of these masters, would that be sufficient proof? --Kaspersky Доверие 20:06, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, the reason I blocked you was for being a reincarnation of a blocked user, not for the images you uploaded. Also, note that simply owning the originals of these photos is not necessarily sufficient; you'd have to own the copyright, too. Anyway, if you want to upload a TIFF or a higher-resolution JPG to support your claim, please do. User:dbenbenn 03:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I am also a good man; my sole desire is to contribute. I am the person who took these pictures. I am the copyright owner. I have thousands of these pictures that would be of great use to this project. What proof of this can I provide that will satisfy you? I would be happy to upload the original tiff masters of any picture you want. I'm sure you know that I have to be logged in to upload files. Since my account is still blocked, what would be the best way to provide proof of my innocence that will make you happy? --Kaspersky Доверие 05:06, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm trying to say that I'm not Stark. Why would I make an account with my name and his information? This is not a funny joke for me. I want to share these things, but you are playing jokes that are not funny. They are hurtful to me and to Wikimedia. --Kaspersky Доверие 18:01, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
No tag bot
[edit]Hi Orgullomoore. If you're interested in extending User:Orgullobot, here's an idea that would be really useful: tagging newly-uploaded images that don't have source or license tag. w:User:OrphanBot does that on the English Wikipedia. Specifically, if an image is uploaded with a blank image description page, Orgullobot could add {{subst:nsd}}. And if an image is uploaded with no copyright tag, Orgullobot could add {{Untagged}} (a template we'd want to create). Of course, the bot can get a list of newly-uploaded images to check from Special:Newimages, especially using the "Show new changes starting from" feature. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 02:13, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, dbenbenn. That sounds like a great idea, thanks for bringing it up. The first part (if an image is uploaded with absolutely no description at all) is very easy, and I will get on this tonight. For the second request, however, we would need two things: 1) For the template to be created first and (2) for the bot to keep an updated list of all the possible license tags, but it definitely seems feasible. Let me know what you think, ciao--Orgullomoore 04:55, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- For "no license tag" we have {{subst:nld}} yet. See {{Nld}} --Sanbec ✉ 09:05, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- I made Template:Untagged. I think it's better to have a separate template. An image with no copyright tag might very well have copyright information (for example, "I took this photo, and it's GFDL."), so one has to be a little more careful when deleting.
- Category:License tags is your updated list of copyright tags. User:dbenbenn 15:11, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've got it running. How would you say it's doing? Anything you would change?--Orgullomoore 03:30, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- Awesome! A minor bug: at Image:Animal0026.gif the bot replaced the image description with {{No source since}}; instead it should have appended {{Untagged}}.
- I've got it running. How would you say it's doing? Anything you would change?--Orgullomoore 03:30, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- Category:License tags is your updated list of copyright tags. User:dbenbenn 15:11, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- w:User:OrphanBot also leaves messages on uploaders' talk pages. I have no idea about the details, but you might want to consider doing that, too. User:dbenbenn 03:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Would you please explain why you reverted my changing of the GFDL tag on Image:Richard Matthew Stallman.jpeg? The notation on the image's page says it's from a bookcover. {{Bookcover}} seems to therefore apply. I understand that Richard is in favor of free software, but I do not see that this can extend to assuming he or Sam Williams releases rights to the bookcover image. --Durin-en 20:23, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- w:Free as in Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software explains that the book is GFDL. Template:Bookcover, being a redirect to Template:Fair use, of course only applies to images that should be speedy deleted. User:dbenbenn 02:25, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Deleting WeatherBot images
[edit]What do you think now? It's been ages, no one has commented against it here or at en.wn... I think this is about as close as we'll get to "total consensus". --pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:32, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- Alright. I'll try to do it this weekend. I'll keep an archive of all the images the bot deletes, so they can be restored if necessary. User:dbenbenn 21:35, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Also (unrelated), if you have some to add to Commons:Bugs, please do so. I have a feeling you will know some more SVG-related bugs; I only know a couple. pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:45, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good job on that page. I won't be contributing to it, though. I've given up on anything having to do with bugzilla or MediaWiki development. It's just too frustrating and unpleasant. (I first noticed the problem a year ago, when it took 6 months for my trivial patch to bugzilla:153 to be applied. The slowness combined with the rudeness of the "developers" just makes it not worth the effort. And that's not even taking into account the fact that the sourcecode is almost completely undocumented.)
- One hint: the workaround mentioned for bug 2888 doesn't really work. There's a real workaround, which is probably worth mentioning at Commons:Bugs. User:dbenbenn 21:50, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I can completely understand that... what is the "real" workaround?? pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:34, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, just upload a thumbnailed version. For example, I did that with Image:Wiktionary-logo-en.png when someone noticed it was broken. The problem with trying "action=purge" is that even if you get the thumbnails fixed, they'll just get broken again in a few months. User:dbenbenn 22:31, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I can completely understand that... what is the "real" workaround?? pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:34, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh BTW for Weatherbot, they just want to keep a few of the last ones (maybe five?) so they can still show how it used to work. Are you able to give yourself a bot flag for a short while? pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:04, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Good idea about becoming a bot, but it's not allowed. MediaWiki complains that "Dbenbenn has administrator or bureaucrat privileges, and cannot be granted bot status." This is a bug, but oh well. User:dbenbenn 16:33, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

ogg FLAC
[edit]Can you explain how to create and upload ogg FLAC? I am used to .FLAC files. — Omegatron 01:13, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Given an uncompressed file, you can encode it as Ogg FLAC with the --ogg option to the
flac
command, i.e. "flac --ogg
". (I'm assuming you're using the command line to run the "flac" command. If you use a GUI, you're on your own.) User:dbenbenn 13:57, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Weather Images
[edit]Hi - thanks for getting rid of all the pesky weather images. However, it would have been nice if you would have announced this on the mailing list a few days in advance - tools that rely on the log are swamped by this... For example, CommonsTicker will check for usage of each image that was deleted, I will have to implement a filter so it's not bogged down by your mass deletion.
Idealy, you should be on IRC in #wikimedia-commons during massive bot runs, so you can get imediate feedback. Anything massive like this needs to be coordinated. Perhaps throttle to bot to a few hundred deletions per day for now? I'll implement a filter for COmmonsTicker, so there's no big problem for me, but Special:Log/delete is pretty much unusable at the moment...
Regards -- Duesentrieb(?!) 18:25, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- The bot automatically stopped as soon as you posted, having deleted 2284 of about 25000 WeatherBot images. Sorry, I wasn't aware of CommonsTicker (and you're right, I should have asked on the mailing list first). I tried to give myself bot status with Special:Makebot, but MediaWiki doesn't let administrators become bots. Perhaps you could encourage this bug to be fixed? That would help with Special:Recentchanges (though probably not with the delete log).
- Anyway, I posted on the mailing list, and I'll wait for feedback before starting again (not before June 10). Throttling to a few hundred per day isn't really feasible: at that rate, it'll take 2 months, and the bot does require a little supervision. User:dbenbenn 19:01, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. I guess if people are aware that this is going to happen, it's OK.
- I think it's correct that MediaWiki does not allow admin and bot-status at once. A bot with admin rights is dangerous, and people should watch it. It's annying in this case, sure, but it wouldn't help with the deletion log anyway.
- Throtteling is probably not such a good idea anyway... better to be bothered once for a day or two then every day for a few hours...
- Thanks again for your effort, and I hope you can continue (and finish) the job soon. CommonsTicker will ignore all such deletions, as long as you don't change the comment the bot generates. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 19:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- I changed the deletion summary. It's now
- I've stopped the bot; let me know when you've got CommonsTicker updated so I can start again. User:dbenbenn 20:07, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
You can continue the bot, the filter still matches. I'm using the following regular expression for the summary: /^Old \[\[User:WeatherBot\]\] map/. As long as that matches, all is fine. Regards -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:59, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Against DRM license?
[edit]I saw a debate on Commons:Deletion requests that took place awhile ago and wanted to resurrect it, because I don't think the result was correct. The question is whether or not {{ADRM}} is a compatible license with Commons copyright policy. The conclusion people came to is that it is not, since it has some restrictions on distribution ability (you can't distribute anything with any form of Digital Rights Management -- that is, you can't distribute anything that makes it impossible for others to re-distribute it). This is not at all incompatible with the GFDL, which has its own equivalent anti-DRM clause: "You may not use technical measures to obstruct or control the reading or further copying of the copies you make or distribute." (Section 2) Other than that, I see nothing in the license which is not compatible with our other Commons copyright policies -- it is a free license, with the only restriction being one which the GFDL already has. All of the Creative Commons licenses we accept have the same sort of clause: "You may not distribute, publicly display, publicly perform, or publicly digitally perform the Derivative Work with any technological measures that control access or use of the Work in a manner inconsistent with the terms of this License Agreement."[3] (Section 4b).
I see absolutely no reason to think this license is not compatible with the GFDL in the same way that our CC licenses are. Are there any real arguments to the contrary? --Fastfission 14:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I think the only problem with ADRM 1.0 was:
- "This license is incompatible with any technology, device or component that, in the normal course of its operation, is designed to prevent or restrict acts which are authorised or not authorised by licensor"
- This sentence is very broad. Could you transmit such a work over SSH or HTTPS? Would the delete tab count as a technology designed to prevent acts which are authorised?
- I wasn't aware that cc-by-sa-2.0 had similar DRM language. So perhaps you're right, perhaps we should allow ADRM here.
- Of course, there's absolutely no reason to use ADRM instead of cc-by-sa-2.0. It appears that User:Bogos is the only one who has used the ADRM license so far. Perhaps someone could point out that GFDL and CC both have DRM clauses, and encourage him to relicense or multilicense. User:dbenbenn 14:28, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think it would be a stretch to think that the ADRM license would prohibit transferring an image over SSH or HTTPS. The only thing those encryption schemes prevent is for people to eavesdrop, something entirely different from copyright issues. SSH and HTTPS does not prevent the person legitimately looking at the content from doing whatever they want with it; it only gets in the way of illegitimate interception. I agree that there is no reason to use ADRM instead of CC-BY-SA for one's own licenses, and think we should actively encourage licensors to put things under a more useful CC license (which is better worded), but I don't think we should mark the ADRM license as incompatible. --Fastfission 22:28, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

- I found a thread on the debian-legal mailing list discussing ADRM: [4], [5], .... The second message is interesting. Debian considers the CC licenses to be non-free, partly because of their DRM restrictions. Evan Prodromou claims that
- The Creative Commons 3.0 licenses will allow "parallel distribution" -- both a DRM'd version and modifiable, clear-text version. They also make specific which kinds of technologies are covered.
- Since the CC licenses are forward-compatible (a 2.0 or 2.5 work can be used under any later version), this means that CC works might eventually be Debian-free. ADRM doesn't have the same feature, so ADRM works will never become Debian-free. User:dbenbenn 23:31, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Like to edit/optimize Image:CC SomeRightsReserved.png
[edit]I figured it was protected, and it was. I have an optimized version of this image. It went from 4152 bytes to 3370. This may not seem like much, but it can save a ton of bandwidth for the wikimedia foundation to shave this image that is simply everywhere. I can upload the image as a different file name if you wish to check it and then upload it onto the crazy-popular image if you don't want to risk leaving it unprotected for any period of time. I took great care to make sure that things like the bKGD and pHYs chunks were preserved (which can effect the rendering in browsers if they are deleted by optimization tools). I deleted a chunk that's tanamount to a JPEG comment which was something like "Created by adobe imageready", and of course, completely recompressed the actual image data to be more efficient using a couple of different tools. The image could've been smaller in greyscale, but that's risky to change on such a popular image, and so I left it at the truecolor version. The net effect I'm almost positive is an entirely identical image, with better compression, and without a hidden comment. The following was the planned summary text: "Size optimization. Technical PNG info: IDAT (pixel data) optimized; dimensions unchanged; color type preserved at 6(true color + alpha transparency); tEXt chunk eliminated(comment by original outputting application); tIME, bKGD, and pHYs chunks preserved; I hearby dual-licensing any copyrightable contributions, as prior licensing: {{self|GFDL}} {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5-nl}}" Let me know, consult with someone else, etc.. [edit]Hi! Nichalp and JYowlinski enveigled me to sign up over here about a year back, but I never had much personal reason to be active here until recently. I was looking to upload Maps and am planning on generating maps for wikipedia history articles, locate images for same, etc. I'm afraid I'm somewhere back in the middle ages lately <g>. In any event, I noticed your BOT on moving redirected categories, and was wondering whether you were planning on running it over on wikipedia. I've generated some interwiki traversing templates at either end See category:old maps and note how easily one can pop back and forth. I figured I'd clean out some of the categories there that have been depreciated in the scheme here, and have already tagged one or two with the category redirect on wikipedia.
I'm also figuring a scheme to sub-list several layers of sub-categories in small font form under 'Maps of' and 'Old maps' major sub-categories and also set up a better century traversal template than the succesion box I used in category:Maps showing 11th-century history. I'm not the best template programmer, but I think I can come up with one that will take a single perameter s.a. 11, or optional modifiers s.a. { 1,st,nd,rd} to take the toughest group of non-th suffixed numbers.
Has there been any discussion of a branch level traversal similar to the succession box, along the shape and form of {{Maps of European history}} but oriented towards leaf hopping within the subcategories, or has the idea been shot down before. Seems like the new category system is just barely toddling, or other such early days term as you prefer in maps, at least.
Besides that, just figured I'd say Hi, is there anything I should know about.<g> And not meaning BDA's name either! He's another 'good egg', and a privilege to know. Best regards // FrankB 07:28, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, Dbenbenn. I notice you have marked Image:ShakiraRipoll cropped.jpg with {{Thumbnail}}, pointting to the image source on flickr. Actually, this image is not a thumbnail. Commons-l subscription
[edit]Hello Dbenbenn,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:51, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Mexico -> México
[edit]I am asking you this question because you were involved with merging category Mexico into category México. I am normalizing the adjectival geographic names over to noun form place names. When converting the 24 categories using "Mexican" to noun form, the scheme states that the EN:Wiki is the authority on the name, including use of diacritics. Unlike most Mexican place names, México is unaccented Mexico in the EN wikipedia. When I convert an adjective form, do you prefer that I convert to México instead? EG Category:Mexican actors -> Actors from México ? Should the bot also create a category Actors from Mexico and redirect it to the accented spelling?
Or should I stick to the Commons rule about non english names in the category tree and Convert all the México cat names back to Mexico? -Mak 06:35, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
CheckUser request for child pornography uploader
[edit]Can someone run CheckUser on User:Sweetheart? I cannot find any place on the Commons to request one. This user uploaded child pornography twice, as this upload log shows. I know that CheckUser is normally used to find sockpuppets, but I think that finding the IP address here would allow an administrator to send a note to the ISP to disconnect this pedophile and a note to the police where the IP is registered to prosecute this pedophile. Photos of 15 year old boys' penises sure counts as child pornography in my eyes. By the way, could you ban that account for uploading child pornography? I was referred to you by User:Essjay by way of the list of administrators with CheckUser access. Jesse Viviano 18:34, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- The image could very well be taken by the uploader himself. It has been said that images taken by oneself do not constitute child pornography. / Fred Chess 20:14, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- For goodness sakes Fred. I have read this repeated a few times but I am surprized to hear it coming from you. How long do you think it will take for folks into this sort of stuff to pay kids to take pictures of their parts and post them? If Commons thinks it is important to bar this material, then it should bar it, regardless of source. -Mak 00:30, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Charlie Chaplin.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Charlie Chaplin.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. California outline map screws up all county pages!
[edit]The neat .svg you created with outlines of the california counties seems to be about 10000x10000 pixels, and that gives firefox fits when it tries to view pages like "solano county" on wp. I put in a few "map size" parameters, but it sounds like it's the .svg that needs to be fixed (rather than going through all the county pages!). (Note that I fixed the solano county page with the "map size" parm, but try some of the other ca counties). 24.6.142.245 04:34, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Note that your image has an absurdly reduced Lake Pontchartrain and some sort of phantom parish to the north of it between the lake and St. Tammany. --216.253.95.34 16:20, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
The Louisiana state map in wikipedia.org's Iberville Parish article omits Lake Pontchartrain completely. This geographic feature is the second-largest inland body of salt water in the United States after the Great Salt Lake, and is 24 miles north to south by 40 miles east to west, the size of many parishes or counties in the United States. It's not a negligble geographic feature.71.33.196.60 23:19, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Kentucky county maps
[edit]Thanks for your work in producing Image:Map of Kentucky highlighting Union County.svg et al. Would it be possible to produce a map of Kentucky with all the counties labelled (i.e. an SVG version of Image:Kentucky counties map.gif)? Tompw (talk) (en) 11:16, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
About Image:Map of Virginia highlighting Fairfax County.svg
[edit]The current image is rendered incorrectly in PNG format. For some reason, it is highlighting Fairfax City instead of Fairfax County. I took the liberty of tweaking the SVG to fix this rendering issue and uploaded it here. Could you please move this new file into the location of the old file so that the pages linking to it show the correct map? —Gintar77 09:14, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
LaSalle County Illinois name troubles
[edit]On the en Wikipedia there is a redlink to your locator map for LaSalle County, Illinois. The expected map is Image:Map of Illinois highlighting LaSalle County.svg but your file is saved under Image:Map of Illinois highlighting La Salle County.svg (with a space between "La" and "Salle"). The map link is automatically generated by the template, so I can't fix the link without giving the county the wrong name in the infobox.
Could you please move or rename the file to the proper county name? I know how to move on en, but not here, and I was hoping it was easier than re-uploading under the new name (which I also thought about doing). Thanks in advance for your help with this and thanks for the great maps! Ruhrfisch 03:50, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- In case anyone else sees this, I saw that Dbenbenn has not edited sionce October 2006, so I reuploaded the file under the correct name myself. Ruhrfisch 15:14, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Ukraine map
[edit]Hi.
I saw your map on Argentina, (the png one) at http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:LocationArgentina.png. I wonder if it would be possible for you to make a similar one for Ukraine?
Best regards Rasmus
Edit: the one at the same knid of adress (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:LocationUkraine.png) for Ukraine is only low resolution and also only in a zoomed in version.
Again, best regards Rasmus
Path Issues in SVGs
[edit]please reply on RevRagnarok's en.wikipedia talk page
There is some rather odd behavior going on with the map of Richmond County, Virginia. Tested on Camino and Safari, both display a graphic with the state capital, Richmond City, highlighted rather than the county, which is northeast of the city. This graphic also appears on the page for Image:Map_of_Virginia_highlighting_Richmond_County.svg, which is referenced automatically via Template:Infobox U.S. County.
But when I downloaded the SVG to try and fix it, the downloaded SVG had Richmond County highlighted correctly. Seems like there's some weird substitution going on -- would a more advanced WikiGnome please check this out? Thanks. VT hawkeyetalk to me 17:13, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Have you tried Shift-F5? Or WP:Purge? — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:09, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- I have verified that both versions look the same under Firefox (Windows). However, I'm a geography idiot and dunno if the image is the correct one - it's a fairly small red spot. I also have a image broken link for the seal. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:12, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I reread the original post. I have the same problem. However, I asked it to purge the preview page and now it says the image is gone. And no record of it being erased in a deletion log. Yikes. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I figured it out. SVGs are XML. There are two "paths" both named Richmond. One needs to be RichmondCo (the first). Then the fill at the end will highlight the proper one. (I did this locally in my text editor.) Bet the same problem happens with Roanoke. There are two of them too. I'd contact the original author and have him fix them all. The WikiMedia engine has a "last one" wins approach, the browser seems to do "first match." — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:22, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Map of Hawaii highlighting Kalawao County.svg
[edit]I've been doing some work on en:List of counties in Hawaii, which now includes your county locator maps for the state. However, Kalawao County is so tiny, that it doesn't show up on the 150px thumbnail... in fact, it's pretty tiny on a 1,000 pixel thumbnail. Therefore, could I ask you create a version which includes a blow-up of the island of Molokai? That way the county's location will more visible than at present.

Image Tagging Image:Trophy.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Trophy.jpg.
If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.
Thank you. Administrative notice
[edit]Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.
If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.
This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

"Saint" counties
[edit]Some US counties start with "St.", as in "Saint Clair County," which is usually spelled as "St. Clair County." Currently, only the image Image:Map of Michigan highlighting Saint Clair County.svg exists, instead of Image:Map of Michigan highlighting St. Clair County.svg. Is there a way you can create the image with "St." in the title, too? This is useful for the U.S. County infobox.
Similarly, there should be a Image:Map of Illinois highlighting St. Clair County.svg.

County map SVGs

Thanks for doing all of the work on the county map SVG files. I'm wondering what program you are using to convert the nationalatlas files to SVG, and if it is open source. Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 20:22, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

File:WIGU example.png
[edit]Hi. File:WIGU example.png states that "It is licensed under the FDL on request from en:User:Eloquence." Do you know if this something which requires formalising under OTRS? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 11:42, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- This was 9 years ago, before the OTRS permissions process and even Commons existed, and the email from Jeff Rowland is somewhere in an old archive. I can see if I can still dig it up, but it would be common sense to trust the statement. Note that this line art was sent to me by Jeff Rowland, and wasn't available online before it was published on Wikipedia.--Eloquence (talk) 17:49, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- Fair comment, but the bus factor means it'd be better IMHO if it could be cleared up in accordance with current procedures. A similar process was successful for photos of Ronald Graham. Thanks and sorry to be a pain. -- Trevj (talk) 10:56, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

File tagging File:WIGU example.png
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:WIGU example.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:WIGU example.png]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
