Gainesville, Florida

[edit]

Why did you just move 2 photos from Category:Gainesville, Florida to Category:Buildings in Gainesville, Florida when neither of them had a building in the photograph?

no building

--Mjrmtg (talk) 01:39, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Because they're located at one of the two Alachua County Courthouses, both of which are buildings. I'm just not sure which of the two they're at. Are you? ----DanTD (talk) 02:15, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The photos have coordinates. Maybe there should be a category made like Category:Valdosta Courthouse Square then, because the monuments are not in the courthouses. --Mjrmtg (talk) 02:12, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I thought they were at least on the property of one of them, but your suggestion sounds good. We should also include Category:Bo Diddley Community Plaza in that too. Did you know I passed right by that whole area last Friday? I wanted to get some photos of Florida State Road 26A west of there. The project turned out terrible. I think next time I go there, I'll just rent a bike in the city and take my pictures of the route from that. ----DanTD (talk) 05:21, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Road signs along Interstate 95 in Virginia

[edit]

I just saw someone create this category. What do you think? Should we do it too? --Mjrmtg (talk) 14:08, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure they should be everywhere right now. I've been concentrating mostly on states that have a lot of images of a lot of signs. Maybe if Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and/or New York get as many as Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey, this might be okay. Perhaps we should invite Famartin into the discussion, because he seems to be the one who's making most of the road signs related to road categories. --DanTD (talk) 22:07, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever you guys feel is best elsewhere. My concentration is from Virginia to New Jersey, and I mostly concentrate of categories that I have.. shall we say... oversaturated with content ;) Famartin (talk) 22:15, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you have. :) And Mjrmtg has done quite a bit of oversaturating himself, but it seems you've beaten both of us. Hence the attempt to split the ones in these states by county, city, and even roads occasionally. BTW, I have more county and city road and road sign categories to create for Virginia, even though I think I'm neglecting New Jersey. ----DanTD (talk) 22:31, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've been creating similar categories like Category:Road signs for U.S. Route 319 along other roads in Florida which only has 1 parent category Category:Road signs related to U.S. Route 319 in Florida as I was copying from a similar existing category. I feel like it needs another parent category like "Category:Road signs for U.S. Routes in Florida| 319". What do you think? --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:02, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

overcats

[edit]

I'm not going to fix all of these because I really don't care about the state level basic category, but since you seem to, I'm going to point out that you recently maintained an overcategorization situation, placing a file in the category 'Road signs in Ocean County, New Jersey' when it was already within the catgory 'Road signs for the Garden State Parkway along other roads in Ocean County, New Jersey'. Like I said, I don't really care about the big state category, but you might want to review what I'm doing with the road subcatgories in NJ. If reducing overcategorization is a goal of yours, that is. Famartin (talk) 07:26, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PA townships and boroughs

[edit]

Hey there, I've noticed you've placed alot of boroughs within surrounding township categories. This isn't proper since they are legally independent, separate entities. Where I've encountered them, I've removed this, but wanted to let you know in case you were still doing it. Famartin (talk) 23:59, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm fully aware that they're independent. But they're still within the borders of various townships. I don't think placing them within the townships or other municipalities necessarily suggests that the towns rule the boroughs. ----DanTD (talk) 02:41, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But it does suggest the boroughs are PART of the townships, when they are not. Famartin (talk) 02:56, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This seems important since this distinction varies from jurisdiction (like how VA towns are part of counties, but cities arent, and how NY Villages are part of towns, but cities arent)Famartin (talk) 02:57, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Railway post offices

[edit]

I notice you created Category:Railway post offices of the United States. Any thoughts on what to do with a Railway Post Office terminal, as seen in ? - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • I did that to split it off from RPO's in other countries. This can't be the only RPO station in the world, thought. Grand Central Terminal has one, and so do other stations. Are there other images of the one in Seattle available? ----DanTD (talk) 01:39, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category change

[edit]

Hello, I'm wondering why you changed the category on this photo. Bubba73 (talk) 04:59, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is this not specifically part of the "Historic Railroad Shops?" if not, then I can gladly undo my previous edit. ----DanTD (talk) 13:26, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it is not part of the shops - they are in the background. So, OK. Bubba73 (talk) 20:09, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cadillac Eldorado generations

[edit]

Good day. We seem to have some discrepancy between Wikipedia and Commons in Cadillac Eldorado generations. en:w:Cadillac_Eldorado#Eighth_generation_(1967–1970) has it ending in 1970, but Commons category Category:Cadillac Eldorado (8th generation) and subcategory Category:Cadillac Eldorado (8th generation) Cabriolet include mid 1970s autos. I thought you might know about this, or at least know who on Wikimedia would be good to ask? Should this be mentioned on the en:w talk page? Thanks for your work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:10, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I see that on the regular Wikipedia page the 5th Generation includes only 1961 and 1962 Eldorado, and the 6th Generation includes only 1963 and 1964 Eldorado, whereas in the commons, the 5th Generation Eldorado includes those not only from 1961 and 1962, but from 1963 and 1964. From there, the commons coverage goes off track. But yes, I think this should be brought to the talk page. ----DanTD (talk) 20:39, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fences on Bridges category

[edit]

Do you think we could find enough of them to put in a Fences on Bridges category? If that isn't the right name - what should the category be called?

Fences on Bridges?

Mjrmtg (talk) 17:02, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Admittedly, I never thought of this. Although I must admit this specific fence stands out along the bridge over I-95. ----DanTD (talk) 01:50, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

State - County templates

[edit]

Both the Florida and Alabama templates appear to be broken somewhere. If you look at 'Template:Counties of Florida' or 'Template:Counties of Alabama' you'll notice each one has a county that is in blue when the rest are in red font. 'Template:Counties of Tennessee' and 'Template:Counties of Georgia (U.S. state)' are all in red. In the template around the county that is in blue there is probably a syntax error of some type. The user that created them speaks German which I don't so I'm trying to go through the Florida and Alabama template to find the error. Mjrmtg (talk) 23:43, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I just looked up the templates for county-specific subcategories on Category:Florida State Road 40, Category:Florida State Road 44, and Category:Florida State Road 50, and they all seem to be working fine. It's only the ones for Category:Florida State Road 121 that have no counties showing up. ----DanTD (talk) 23:57, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I find lots of images of US highways without categories. I know you have a complex scheme regarding their categorization. Do you want me to notify you about these, or should I continue to put them in some related category hoping you will find them there? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 13:48, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which images of US Highways don't have categories? Show me some. --DanTD (talk) 14:02, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't show you any as I have already put them in my best category guess. My question is, in the future if I find others would you rather I just let you know rather than continue my prior practice? Krok6kola (talk) 14:12, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

law sign?

Mjrmtg (talk) 17:49, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your work categorizing traffic signals

[edit]

Good day, thanks for your work! One detail I've noticed that it looks like you sometimes miss is that for example when you categorize a traffic light at red by US state, when the image was already categorized with "Traffic signals in (state)", that second category becomes redundant, and so should have been removed when you were making the change. Example [1]; "Traffic lights at red state in Georgia (U.S. state)" is a more specific subcategory of "Traffic signals in Georgia (U.S. state)" so the second category is no longer needed. I fixed this one, but mentioning it for your attention going forward. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk)

I get that. But I left the redundant ones behind, because I think it should be changed to a more localized traffic signal category, such as Atlanta, Georgia, or in the case of your example, Macon, Georgia. I'm really surprised there's no city-specific traffic signal category for Atlanta, let alone enough images for them. ----DanTD (talk) 19:19, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization

[edit]

[2] seems wrong to me, given that Livingston Manor is out of frame to the right. - Jmabel ! talk 08:54, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So would that be the Town of Rockland? ----DanTD (talk) 17:35, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose a small portion of the upper right of the photo is in the town of Rockland; other portions are probably in half a dozen other townships. It seems to me that my original statement that is was Sullivan County was more useful, but if you really want to go through and work out what portions are in what townships, go for it. It certain does not seem useful to categorize it under Livingston Manor, which as I say is out of frame. If you want to really understand just what is in and out of the photo, I made five ImageNotes, which ought to be enough for you (or anyone) to correlate this to a map. - Jmabel ! talk 18:48, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I get it. I just saw a lot of images posted as being in Sullivan County in general that seemed a little too generic and vague. I was hoping to narrow it down a little more. What other townships are those three lakes in? So far I haven't found too much. ----DanTD (talk) 20:04, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea, and no interest in researching. I'm in Spain right now, and I have a backlog of over 1000 photos to upload. If you want to get it down to that level of detail, please feel free. If not, then please revert to Sullivan County, which is a well-known place, and accurate. I doubt even 10% of people who live in New York State would recognize the name "Rockland". Far more would recognize "Livingston Manor", which is why I used it in the image name even though it is out of frame. - Jmabel ! talk 21:48, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Exit 850 feet Advance Guide Sign?

[edit]

Should I make the category for this photo?

850 ft

Mjrmtg (talk) 20:55, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

You seem to be under the impression that this is where you place sign pictures that aren't of the road. But, you have not noticed (or deliberately ignored) that there are two sub-cats that go into said categories... "road signs along route xx", and "road signs for route xx along other roads". Since you haven't made this distinction for I-295 yet, I've just plopped everything in there that currently belongs. Famartin (talk) 14:12, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, I just wanted to give the category some traction while I was getting it started. I saw far too many signs for I-295 located on roads that aren't on I-295. It seems kind of misleading. I'm perfectly fine with splitting of the two sub-cats. ----DanTD (talk) 14:30, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Don't start something you can't or won't finish. Famartin (talk) 23:29, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not only do I intend to finish this project, I intend to do the same thing to the destinations in Virginia. And I believe the same should be done with similar categories in other states as long as those categories are excessive, such as in Maryland, Pennsylvania, etcetera. DanTD (talk) 23:32, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine but don't leave it in a semi-sorted state. Get it done in a timely manner. Famartin (talk) 23:33, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Care to join me? Actually, I've been debating whether the Virginia State Route categories should be sorted by route number. But for now, I'll just move them to the letter "V." --DanTD (talk) 23:36, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Older photo question

[edit]

I have a couple older photos (from 2008) I found where someone took photos of U.S. Route 129 in Jones County, Georgia before a bypass was built around the city of Gray. Currently, U.S. Route 129 would not be a category for those photos if they were taken today as the highway bypasses that city. Should I leave the U.S. Route 129 category on those photos since at the time (2008) it was a correct category? Hope the question make sense. (talk page stalker) @Mjrmtg: absolutely include Category:U.S. Route 129 in Georgia (U.S. state), and absolutely mention the change in the description. - Jmabel ! talk 14:08, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How many pics of the former US 129 are in the commons? If there's a sizeable amount, there could be a potential for new category for "Former U.S. Route 129 (Gray, Georgia), or perhaps a cat for all former sections. Come to think of it, I should work on a new category for Old Florida State Road 52 east of the Pasco/San Antonio area. ----DanTD (talk) 09:07, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
