Jamesport Meeting House

[edit]

You mean NYC hasn't taken over Long Island yet? Maybe when we become the 51st state.

Sorry for the error, must've misclicked something. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:12, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why remove category

[edit]

Why did you remove Category:Views from roads in the United States. The photos is a view from a road in the United States. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:50, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was a removal of Category:Views from automobiles in Georgia (U.S. state), then realized I made a mistake. Any chance you're thinking of splitting off some road-specific sub-cats? ----DanTD (talk) 12:25, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Are you thinking of something like Category:Views from Interstate 75 in Georgia (U.S. state), Category:Views from Interstate 10 in Florida? --Mjrmtg (talk) 01:04, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was considering Category:Views from Interstate 75, Category:Views from Interstate 10, Category:Views from Interstate 95, and maybe those yours as subcats of mine, but now I'm starting to think with or without the state-specific category, it might make the existing categories useless. ----DanTD (talk) 01:58, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see the dilemna. This is sort of reminding me of the controversy with Category:Black and white photographs and how that obscures files in categories you wouldn't think of looking in. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:34, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

I have learned so much from seeing the improvements you make to my edits. (I didn't understand very much before seeing what you do.) So I thank you for being a good teacher. Kalbbes (talk) 20:49, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:San Mateo Hayward Park Station platform.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Dan. I'm trying to figure out what should be done with this category. You're right in saying that it has two main locations - I actually visited both of them last month, so I have a bunch of pictures of them to upload soon. So, would it make sense to have:

each with a corresponding Wikidata item and location? Although the location for the overall category would be tricky - should that be at Riverhead as the 'main' part of the museum? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:41, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I can go along with that. I was going to wait until there were more pictures in each before I did that, but I'm fine with splitting the category between the Riverhead and Greenport locations. Any trains running between the two stations would be even better, if you or anyone else can find them. ----DanTD (talk) 03:59, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've created the categories and moved things around, will sort out the wikidata entries later. I'll try to upload my photos from the two later today. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:05, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Did you get that Hy-Rail Jeep in Riverhead? I tried to get that in 2015, but my picture was so bad I never loaded it up. ----DanTD (talk) 12:17, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if that's what this was? My photos from the two are now uploaded and in the categories above. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:05, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nocatee Parkway

[edit]

Are you familiar with Nocatee Parkway in St. Johns/Duval County? I created a category for the road and was wondering if you could take a look at the category to see if it had all of the necessary parent categories, thanks. Also, I have a list of categories I've create on my user page. I'm thinking of switching the way it looks to be organized like your list. Is that ok by you? --Mjrmtg (talk) 10:32, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm afraid I haven't seen that road myself. There are some categories on my existing homepages and sub-pages I'm thinking of reorganizing, especially the numbered car categories. ----DanTD (talk) 12:03, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merrick Road

[edit]

I see that in File:Freeport, NY - former Grove Theater 01.jpg and some others you've turned "Montauk Highway" (certainly wrong for Nassau County) into "Merrick Boulevard" but in Freeport (and I think throughout Nassau County) this is "Merrick Road" not (as in Queens) "Merrick Boulevard". - Jmabel ! talk 15:48, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, Montauk Highway isn't used as the name in modern times, but Merrick Road is. There seems to have been a dispute over naming the article "Merrick Boulevard" vs. "Merrick Road," both in Queens and Nassau County. ----DanTD (talk) 16:14, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Bizarre. In Freeport (where I grew up, and where I've been back to visit with some frequency) it is definitely Merrick Road. As for "Montauk Highway" and "modern times": isn't that still the name used in Suffolk? It was when I was growing up. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yes, I know it's Merrick Road in Nassau County and Amityville, Merrick Boulevard in Queens, and Montauk Highway in Suffolk. But Wikipedia calls both the Queens and Nassau segments "Merrick Road," so I thought the commons category (Merrick Boulevard) should cover both, at least temporarily. Also in case you didn't notice there are some old HABS images of the Merrick Road in Seaford that call it "Montauk Highway." ----DanTD (talk) 19:54, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NYC building identification

[edit]

Do you recognize File:Paolo Monti - Serie fotografica (New York, 1965) - BEIC 6361487.jpg or File:Paolo Monti - Serie fotografica (New York, 1965) - BEIC 6346994.jpg? They were taken over 50 years ago. The original uploader believed that this one was related to Category:Museum of Modern Art (New York City), however I've looked up and down 53rd and 54th streets and don't see any present day structures that have a dark congregate-type exterior with grating and features set at 45° angles. It doesn't look like anything in the MoMA sculpture garden either. Perhaps it was something MoMA-related or was near MoMA, but has long since been torn down and built over? The photographer also took shots of Washington Park and the Financial District in the same 50+-year old collection, so it could also be a building farther downtown. Thanks for considering this question. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 10:34, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I've never seen either one of these buildings, let alone the pictures of them. ----DanTD (talk) 12:30, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hawkins Homestead

[edit]

Hello DanTD, Today I took photos of the Hawkins Homestead in Stony Brook and uploaded two of them to Wikimedia commons, as follows:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hawkins_Homestead_after_restoration_2018.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hawkins_Homestead_2018.jpg

I was thinking it might be worth adding one of these to the Hawkins Homestead wikipedia article, as an addition (not replacing anything), because the photos capture the entire home, also in its recent post-renovation state. What do you think? Springfulutopia (talk) 22:22, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You're about eight years too late for that. ----DanTD (talk) 03:15, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DanTD! I didn't understand (apologies!); eight years too late for what? (I can't tell what "that" refers to?) Springfulutopia (talk) 09:50, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I misread what you were writing. I thought you were recommending writing a whole article. My bad. ----DanTD (talk) 11:14, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! Since the current photo on the article is from 2013 (pre-restoration, as the caption implies), I thought it could be good to add one of these post-2018 restoration photos. What do you think? Springfulutopia (talk) 12:30, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind. I've got a few plans for that article now myself. ----DanTD (talk) 12:32, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I added the 2018 photo and slightly changed the caption on the original (changed from "has vowed to restore" to "planned to restore," and added "2013") to reflect the current situation, which is that the homestead has been restored. On a related note: I really appreciate your initiative on all the NRHP articles and photo collection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Springfulutopia (talk • contribs) 13:12, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Categorizing NRHP photos

[edit]

DanTD, Just a quick "thank you" for categorizing all of my recent NRHP photo uploads! I'm grateful you're on top of that. 67.84.144.47 10:37, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Springfulutopia[reply]

Road sign gantries in Florida

[edit]

There are currently 200 photos in Category:Road sign gantries in Florida. What do you think about creating subcategories by county? (like Category:Road sign gantries in Duval County, Florida - Another question about gantries - shouldn't we add Category:Structures in Florida to Category:Road sign gantries in Florida since gantries are structures? --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:43, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. Expanding road sign gantries by county. Never saw that before anywhere, but it sounds like a pretty good idea. Are structure categories normally used for other types of gantries? ----DanTD (talk) 20:05, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I had to go back many parent categories to Category:Gantries which is under Category:Structural systems which are under Category:Structures. So all "road sign gantry" category can have "structures by the particular country (or even state)" added to them, I'll go ahead and start doing that part. --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, now what about overhead railroad signals? ----DanTD (talk) 21:37, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Can you give an image example? --Mjrmtg (talk) 00:51, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Right here. I know this is named for the tower off in the distance, but the signal bridge over the tracks is right in front of it. ----DanTD (talk) 02:02, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Railway signal gantries in the United States should have Category:Structures in the United States. I've added it. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:10, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose as long as it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way I suppose it's okay. Now about that county specific road sign gantries category; Have you done any work on those yet, and are you planning any for other states? ----DanTD (talk) 14:57, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't created any county specific road sign gantry categories yet. I was wondering what you're opinion was of creating county specific categories. I'd limit it to states with large number of road sign gantries. New Jersey has 221 photos and 21 counties. Florida has the next highest amount of photos with 200. Georgia has 153 photos, probably limit it to those 3 states. --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:35, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NJ Turnpike cats

[edit]

You can leave them be. I'll be working with them some more in the coming weeks. Famartin (talk) 14:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I did see some I-95 images that were incorrectly added in NJ Turnpike cats, though. ----DanTD (talk) 15:39, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
