As it states on my talk page I am currently busy and have no time for wiki issues. Equally we keep communication on wiki so that others may follow it. If there is some copyright issue with something that you have evidence for please take it to an admin board or possibly forward the information to the OTRS system. --Herby talk thyme 08:06, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:UpToMyXInAlligators Image.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:UpToMyXInAlligators Image.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:Larval paddlefish.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Question
Hi Atsme, I have question regarding this picture. Was it made underwater with underwater housing, I know Olympus xxxx series were popular with that housing that time. And how come size is biger than official, was that black part added ? Thanx. --Mile (talk) 15:33, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, Mile - it was a macro shot with the (8mp) 8080WZ with macro attachment in an Ikelite underwater housing with a special macro port and Ikelite digital strobes. The eel was in a dark crevice so I had to clean-up a bit of backscatter, then simply punched the blacks for a clean background. I enlarged the shot using resizer/optimizer software which explains the larger mp size. Hope that helps. Atsme😊Consult 16:19, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Atsme,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:44, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. File:Venna Lee and L.F. Wilson (1970s).jpg
Noticed your question for Yann, but it does appear to have some problems. There is no source link to verify the license, it's a scan of photo (so no useful metadata) and the source claims "own" when I doubt you are the photographer. Betty Wills probably needs to go to COM:Contact OTRS. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:33, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Alexis Jazz, actually I am the photog, and I do own the copyright, and I added the link to the website on the image. While I understand the good work our volunteers do on Commons, I believe this is one instance where AGF should have been the priority. Our job here is to protect WMF and this project from liability, not to protect the copyright holder from all potential infringements - we are neither copyright attorneys nor enforcers of copyright law. As a member of OTRS, I am hoping to help clarify some of the gray areas. Atsme 📞 23:48, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
- Wait wut, you are OTRS? But.. you really should know better it would seem? And combining "own work" with "Betty Wills Family Historical Collection" is really confusing as it is not obvious you are Betty Wills. The author should also link to your username in this case to clarify that.
- This is honestly that one in a thousand cases where somebody uploading a photo from a family archive actually is the photographer. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:57, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
- Well, Alexis Jazz, unfortunately no - not exactly an isolated incident. There are other cases but that's neither here nor there at this point. My work on OTRS does not grant me any special privileges. I'm only human, so there's always the possibility that I'll make a mistake - and I actually do appreciate our checks and balances - they are a good thing when applied properly and when AGF. I upload my images using the special upload wizard - its fast and easy. If I have images that are not mine, or that are in the public domain, I typically include the actual "gettin' place". Most of my notices and licensing on Commons typically includes Betty Wills (Atsme) somewhere as the source or on the license as exampled in this file. I try to limit mixing my two identities to avoid potential weirdos *lol* but I guess it really doesn't matter considering I was outed back in 2015 on en.Wikipedia via my photos (Google photo match), so anyone who has the mind to, can trace me back. I occasionally add both names to my licenses here - but keep in mind, I just uploaded those images - the ink was still wet on the description when they were tagged.😂 That's why I emphasize AGF. Atsme 📞 00:39, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- I don't know exactly how OTRS works, but couldn't you create an OTRS ticket that links your username to your real name, put "Betty Wills" (without link) as the author and slap that OTRS-ticket on all your own work? That way your uploads will rarely be tagged and you don't have to publicly mix your identities.
- I am now also dealing with Revision of File:Madeleine Doran Norman Lenburg Photographer 4 7 1979.jpg. And we can't assume good faith there, can we? I mean, I do assume they are acting in good faith but this doesn't work for us. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Venna_Lee_and_L.F._Wilson_(1970s).jpg&diff=next&oldid=305504721 also looks suspicious to "us". (people looking for copyvios) There is already a CC-BY-SA license template and {{No permission since}} is removed while adding "CC-BY-SA 4.0" to the permission field, this just looks suspicious. The link to the site doesn't seem to help much either because the entire site doesn't seem to really work. Maybe it's my computer, but all I see is a lava lamp. I think the easiest solution is probably for you to create an OTRS ticket for yourself and use that on your uploads. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:16, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- *ah* you already did. So why not use that ticket? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:32, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- You show the Author as Betty Wills and link to a source that is © 2016 The Wills Ranch. That needs explaining. Secondarywaltz (talk) 14:52, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- I have added info to clarify this. Secondarywaltz (talk) 16:05, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

@Patrick Rogel and Túrelio: this really was a poor speedy deletion.
- Atsme is an OTRS member and claims this is own work. (Google cache)
- The site linked to "prove" the copyvio is a blog, a Czech Blogger/Wordpress really, nothing but user content.
- I don't even see any picture of a gorilla drinking bourbon there. Derivative work though, so I guess Atsme photoshopped a bourbon bottle on a gorilla that was already here?
- That page is hotlinking a ton of images from Wikimedia.
- It also copied some information from Wikipedia.
- There is no clear date on anything.
- Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:16, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Yep, I just warned him on his TP - in fact, Commons has a public domain image of the gorilla which further validates that it is in the public domain - see File:WesternLowlandGorillaP2.jpg and the rest come from other public domain sites, such Pixabay. This is clearly stepping over the line of what volunteers should be doing. I am working on making some positive changes to put an end such bold mistakes. Atsme 📞 13:24, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Patrick Rogel spots many copyvios correctly, but I noticed before every now and then he would provide a source that most likely got the image from Commons. You are not entirely free from blame either though: instead of "own", you should have linked the source image(s). But even if you did: Patrick often manages to spot and tag images that should be deleted, but provides an incorrect rationale. So he's right, but for the wrong reason, and this is not the first time. I haven't figured out what to do with that yet. In this case: while I can't see the original image, I suspect it's out of COM:SCOPE. - COM:SCOPE also says "that an image is in use on a non talk/user page is enough for it to be within scope". The image was used on a user talk page. And there is "Files that add nothing educationally distinct to the collection of images we already hold covering the same subject, especially if they are of poor or mediocre quality". I think I can do a better job of the bourbon gorilla, and since I kind of like it, I probably will. (when I know the source for the glass and bottle) We already have various examples of photoshop. Just a few of mine: Jorge gone missing, gnomes stole your coffee, false price tag, returned my book to the library, the invention of color and the Not Old John tower. (why?) I also have some funny not-very-educational work, but I normally wouldn't upload that. If I had known that was considered in scope.. - I know, I don't use sharpen often. I also updated my version, I had already created it before I saw your new version. I see you've gone the other way and tried to match the sharpness of the rest of the picture to the additions. I'm still not happy about mine, but I think it looks a little bit more realistic. As for my selfie - I've already been outed over at en.WP and all I got was an unpology. Wrongful deletion
Hi. I've read the discussion above. Please accept my apologies for this speedy nomination and for not having clicked on the image at http://eko-eko-eko.blog.cz/ which links to a Wikipedia in Czech page. Neverthess I've not deleted this image; it's an Administrator who has. In addition and contrary as you're stating you've been consulted about the deletion 11 June 2018 at 11:34, as you can see at the section above. Kind regards, --Patrick Rogel (talk) 16:02, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- No problem - suggestion - before tagging images uploaded by veteran editors with a SPEEDY, try notifying via TP discussion first - a speedy delete doesn't give one much of an opportunity to explain or fix an issue that was overlooked. Communication can be an amazingly productive tool...and it's free. Atsme 📞 16:16, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
Dear Atsme,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,

How did you happen to find it? The original file I uploaded is File:Report_On_The_Investigation_Into_Russian_Interference_In_The_2016_Presidential_Election_Page_NoImages.pdf which has the correct source link. I do recall quite a bit of discussion about that particular file, and some noms for deletion as shown in the "File Useage on Commons" section. If there's a quick cleanup tool to change all files into a category into another it would be of use
Specifically at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Promotional_models_at_video_game_trade_shows that all need to be moved to "Female" sub-category, after I already did it with the (few) male ones. --SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 18:08, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
- None that I'm aware of but it appears they already are, aren't they? See this. Atsme Talk 📧 18:22, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I mean from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Promotional_models_at_video_game_trade_shows to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Female promotional_models_at_video_game_trade_shows
So I considered using some of the following:
- SNAAAAKE!!, what I need you to wrap your head around is the fact that when you bring images over from Flik'r: No warranties are given. The license may not give you all of the permissions necessary for your intended use. For example, other rights such as publicity, privacy, or moral rights may limit how you use the material. The latter is what makes it unacceptable for Commons. Unfortunately, that's what I've been seeing in the images you've uploaded. There is material in the frame that requires signatures from the object creators and human models. The photographer doesn't own the copyrights to whatever is in the picture, and unless they provide releases for same, and/or a model release for the humans involved, Commons cannot use the image. Those photographs were shot at a private venue, not at public facility paid for by taxpayers/governmemt like a free concert in a public park. The people in those images may well be paid models or people who have not signed a "talent/model release" which means you cannot upload them here. You may get away with uploading one or two on en.WP per fair use but that's a toughie to get done. With regards to categories, we use more than one category so things are easier to find. In your en.WP PREFERENCES, EDITING, make sure you've got the box checked for HotCat: easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions (example) Atsme Talk 📧 21:20, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
This has been accepted in vg trade show photos since forever. Otherwise all the categories in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_game_trade_shows would be practically empty, you know. --SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 21:23, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot

- Thank you so much for introducing me to this wonderful tool. Atsme Talk 📧 21:47, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
- Jim.henderson - help!! *lol* Re: the most recent 21 images (1 is a video) that I uploaded - well, I forgot to add them to Category:Photographs by User:Atsme when I was doing the categorization. I attempted to use cat-a-lot after-the-fact but it didn't work as easy for me as it did you when you were showing me how. I opened User uploads, opened the Cat-a-lot feature, highlighted all 21 images and that's where it ended. I don't know what to do next to add the 21 images/video to the catalogue all at once. Can you help? Atsme Talk 📧 13:58, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- I don't have much time at this moment; must do a few things quickly and begone for a few hours. Meanwhile, you can look at Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot and see if it helps. Quick searches in Commons, in Youtube, and on the wide Web by Google, has failed to see a video on this topic. I am hoping to give a lightning talk about it in a few months; ought to prepare and publish a slide show beforehand. Jim.henderson (talk) 20:03, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- Finished quicker than expected. I see you have moved some files by Cat-a-lot but I fail to see the purpose for some of the moves. Category:Categories requiring permanent diffusion to zero, to pick the most prominent example, is only for categories, not for files. It has thousands of subcategories but, at the moment, no files except the ones you added by Cat-a-lot. Was this an error? Jim.henderson (talk) 20:03, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- LOL - Don't try to figure those out - they are mistakes and why I pinged you for help. 😊 Atsme Talk 📧 20:05, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- Ah. I was going to leave it as an exercise for you but didn't say so, so one of our most thoughtful admins, Auntof6 used Cat-a-lot to expel those files from the inappropriate category. You still should use that tool to copy the lot of them into appropriate categories. As it happens, it becomes more clumsy (at least for me) when used in a category with too long a list of subcats, so I'm extra careful about whether to move files into cats of that size. If the thing you wish to do remains difficult, perhaps you should explain the problem in more detail. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:25, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- FYI, I am not an admin here. :) I just keep an eye on some of the categories that shouldn't contain files, so I saw those. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:29, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, Auntof6. I don't know why categories cause me problems when it should be a very simple Category:Photographs by User:Atsme or is it a Subcategory? Anyway, that's the one that trips me up - it appears to be a subcategory of User:Atsme. In order for my images to be added to Category:Photographs by User:Atsme (which actually does exist), it appears I have to upload them to my UP first? I encountered issues trying to add that category during the bulk upload process when one has to enter all the info, like caption, description, location, categories, etc. Jim, I'll try to study the help page tomorrow. Enjoy the weekend!! Atsme Talk 📧 01:54, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

- I hope you're getting this straightened out. Categories are in a family tree. Every category is a subcategory or child of at least one other category, usually a few, who are its parent cats. Many, perhaps the majority, of categories have subcats. Thus, my personal Category:Jim Henderson (Wikipedian) has, at this moment, six subcategories, two being for pictures of me and four for pictures by me. Maybe my personcat will grow so big that I want to insert intermediate categories. Those will be kittens of the personal cat, and they will be parental cats of the categories of places I got pictures, but my personal category tree doesn't have to be so complex this year.
- My personcat also has, currently, seven mama cats that are out in the open, and two more that are hiding. One reason my categories have so many mothers is, I use my real name, and much other information about me is also open for all to see. This is under the assumption that hiding in the Internet will only succeed in hiding us from our friends; our enemies will find us anyway. Others don't make that assumption, so they don't let it all hang out in the open. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:33, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you Jim! It is all saved right here on my UTP for easy reference. At the moment, I am involved in a very unpleasant time sink at the en.WP's ARCA noticeboard. It exemplifies the reason I hung out a semi-retired sign on en.WP UTP - the POV warriors have worn me down and I have pretty much lost what little incentive I had remaining to create/edit/help promote GA/FA articles, especially when one has to fight POV warriors who create and protect coatracks thinking they can influence an American election. 😂 Hope you're doing well. - Yipes, that looks like a dreadful case. It's the kind that made me retire years ago from Wikipedia writing about politics, and keep to more productive activities. I see my stalwart friend David, DGG is involved, thus confirming that it's far too heavy for my tender soul. Also I never saw much fun in promoting pretty good articles into something that can gain recognition for quality. I prefer to push horribly bad articles into mediocrity, and even more often I happily categorize old pictures, tonight's crop being postcards from eastern Massachusetts and southern India. Ask more questions, if my writing omitted something important. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:48, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
- Jim.henderson, I too prefer to work with the stuff at the bottom. I'm not sure why--a weakness for bedraggled stray cats, perhaps? DGG (talk) 04:47, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition 2019
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.
If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. There is also an international upload category with no national prize.
If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in the [[:c::Category:Images from Wiki Science Competition 2019 by country|national categories]] even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate such files at next step. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Thanks for uploading File:English-pointer-164115.jpg.
Welcome!
Hopefully, you are here to share good news or make a friendly request but if not, that's ok, too. We all have our work to do, so don't hesitate to tell me if there is anything I can do to help make your work easier. I can only hope that your request is within the realm of possibility...at least from my perspective...and almost anything is possible. 😊 Atsme Talk 📧 23:20, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

- Update:
I also wanted to add that I'm a member of the OTRS team, so if you need any help relative to uploading images, verification of an OTRS ticket, or anything that might be related to images on en.WP, don't hesitate to ask me, or you can simply post a request at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. I also work with Photoshop, so if you need help improving an image, let me know. Atsme Talk 📧 14:35, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. File:Surfing whitewater.jpg
Hi Atsme. Since you seem to be the OTRS volunteer dealing with this file, you might want to look at User talk:Marchjuly#Have submitted Email permission to use Surfing Whitewater jpeg from Terri Denning because it’s related to the email that was sent in. — Marchjuly (talk) 02:47, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Marchjuly - thank you. I already asked the uploader to have the photographer send us the copyright release. I added the ticket to my watch list and now we're waiting for a release from the photographer. Atsme Talk 📧 02:58, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
- Sound good. Thanks for clarifying things. — Marchjuly (talk) 03:41, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi Atsme, thank you for the information. I am reviewing what you wrote and will update the image. I own this image. This image belongs to me and was taken by Terri Denning for my usage. I'm learning the system here - a bit confusing, and will update the information. Appreciate the followup from Marchjuly. Thank you, Navymom9194surfer (talk) 15:53, 29 March 2021 (UTC).
- Hi, Navymom9194surfer, I realize it can be confusing, but copyright laws state that the photographer is the lawful owner of the copyright unless they relinquish or transfer those rights. We need a legal copy of that release, and cannot accept forwarded emails. We do accept scanned copies of work-for-hire agreements, which includes companies, organizations and individuals who hire a photographer, a studio or simply ask a stranger to take the photo. We need a signed & dated copyright release wherein the photog acknowledges that they have no claims to copyright and have transferred all the rights to a named company or person. Another option is for the photographer themselves to use the Release Generator and submit a full release of the image, either under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 international, or if they prefer, a full public domain release. They simply provide the file name of the uploaded image so we'll know which image has been released, or they can upload the image themselves. Please remember to use the ticket number issued for this case on all future correspondence. Atsme Talk 📧 19:37, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
