Image Tagging Image:Ernest-Shackleton.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Ernest-Shackleton.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-selfto release it under the GFDL orPD-selfto release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. - You should add a license tag for the new picture. Without license tag pictures will deleted. -- Rüdiger Wölk 11:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Please do not dump English articles in Arabic wiki and request it to be translated. If you feel that certain articles should be added to the Arabic wiki, just request that in the village pump. Your contributions have been deleted because Arabic wiki policy does not allow having non-Arabic articles, and does not allow the use of the article pages as talk pages. For the inclusion of the photos, simply put them in a page here and link the use the template your page in commons in the arabic wiki --Tarawneh 04:19, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi, this looks like a Bulgarian stamp and stamps are usually not released by postal authorities under the GPL license. If you did not create this stamp, who did? Thuresson 12:48, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- This image of the stamp was created by Prof. Todor Vardjiev (the name Т. Варджиев on the image) who approved its publication here; my contribution included the incorporated pictures and map. Best, Apcbg 20:50, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Does the professor own the design, and not the Bulgarian Posts? Corporations tend to keep copyrights for themselves. Stan Shebs 17:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Mr. Shebs:
- The background of that image is as follows. It is an image made by Prof. Todor Vardjiev, and published here with his approval. The image depicts a souvenir sheet published by the Bulgarian Posts and designed by Prof. Vardjiev too. The design of the souvenir sheet would be owned by the Bulgarian Posts (the fact that the Bulgarian Posts do not possess the copyright of the five photographs directly incorporated in the design is irrelevant I presume).
- If you believe that image is usable in the Commons under some license, then please let me know what should be done. If not, please feel free to delete it right away.
- I would appreciate also your competent advice on the possibility of using that image in the English or other particular Wikis; there seem to exist certain copyright specifics as far as post stamps are concerned. Best, Apcbg 18:36, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- If the Bulgarian Posts owns the design, then they're the only ones who can give it one of the acceptable free licenses, unless they have a special arrangement with the professor that allows him to license it to other people. You would know Bulgarian law better than I would :-) , but in the US it would involve a piece of paper stating the terms of the arrangement. As for the photographs, again in the US the photographer would normally license it to the postal service, under terms specifying what they get - for instance the right to put on stamps and maybe coffee mugs, but the photographer keeps the right to give away the picture to other people later. You would be doing a great service if you talked with the postal people and got a clear statement on what they consider copyrighted - 19th-century Bulgarian stamps are in the public domain due to old age, and modern ones are copyrighted - where is the dividing line? (for US it's 1979, for UK it's 1956, etc) If you can't get a free license, then you can upload to en: and use under fair use doctrine; I think only Turkish and one other WP allow that, I've heard that WPs in all the other languages require all images to be free now. Stan Shebs 13:46, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your clarification and advice. I shall talk to some responsible postal people on the matter of possible authorization for the possible use of that design here under one of the acceptable free licenses, and inform you of the results; could you please recommend which particular variety might appear more acceptable for them, judging from precedents (if any)? (I am not well acquainted with the Wikipedia system of licenses, and the postal people may or may not know more about them.) As a matter of fact those photographs had not been licensed to the postal services (the pictures are mine) but anyway. Thanks for the advice on fair use in the English Wikipedia. Best, Apcbg 17:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- A Creative Commons license is probably the best choice, such as . It seems that ISOC-Bulgaria has been working on this, check out [1]. Stan Shebs 20:46, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sincere thanks! I'll be trying. Best, Apcbg 22:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- I trust that the license arrangements for that image are now satisfactory. Best, Apcbg 17:17, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- It's great, thanx! Stan Shebs 15:17, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Image: Solunska-gimnaziya
[edit]It's probably PD, would fit the PD-old template for instance. However, I didn't notice a mention of a date, or the photographer, so if the picture was from 1910, and the photographer was 20, that person could easily have lived into the 1960s. On the other hand, if the photographer was hired by the school, then copyright could just as likely have been held by the school and be long expired. Any chance of finding out more about the circumstances of the image? The interference pattern suggests scan from a book, perhaps the book has a bit more info? Stan Shebs 15:17, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

- Thanks for bringing my attention to that. Before publishing the picture under GFDL license I got explicit permission for that by its author C.J. Martin, which I duly forwarded for confirmation by "Permissions - Wikimedia Commons"; now it appears they have failed to respond for two weeks, so I am re-submitting my permission request once again. In case there was no response, I could possibly reproduce here the author's written permission (reflected also in a July 17, 2007 entry in the Guestbook of C.J. Martin). Overcategorization
[edit]Hi Apcbg, today I came across your grand pictures from Livingston island in Antarctica. Thank you very much for uploading these treasures. I noticed that you categorized a couple of them not just in Category:Livingston Island but also at the same time in Category:South Shetland Islands and even Category:Antarctica. Please take into consideration that we prefer images to be categorized in the most specialized categories only. If an image has already been associated with Livingston Island then there is no necessity to put it into the categories Livingston Island is directly or indirectly already in. By putting them to the most spezialized category, you are also adding them indirectly to the more general categories and tools like Catscan honor this. The idea is that at every level all images and subcategories should fit into one page. If all images related to Antarctica are directly put into that category, it will overflow and thereby no longer helpful. For this reason we prefer deep hierarchies and put images in the most specialized , i.e. deepest categories only. I've fixed the categorization of some of your images for this reason. Such edits are usually tagged removing overcategorization. Thanks for your understanding and keep up the good work! --AFBorchert 14:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Andreas, many thanks for your criticism and explanation, you are right of course. I didn't pay much attention to that aspect, and only later realized that the most specialized category suffices. Will take care in the future. Best, Apcbg 16:22, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:38, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:BG-Policies-on-MK.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:BG-Policies-on-MK.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- Наистина – кое? Apcbg (talk) 17:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Apcbg (talk) 18:18, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Commons:Image_casebook#2D art (paintings etc.), Commons:Licensing#Checklist.
→Spiritia 22:16, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- Да, изглежда е така и ще трябва да видя какво може да се направи. Благодаря за напътствието! Apcbg (talk) 06:53, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading File:Tangra-Mountains-location-map.png! Did you know that the SVG format is often the best alternative for this type of image? Scalable Vector Graphics have a lot of advantages: they scale better, the file size is usually smaller, and they are easier to modify.

Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.
We welcome any feedback about our site.
Thanks for sharing your pictures,
Samantha and Patrick

Thanks for uploading File:Immigrants-in-Bulgaria.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Port-aux-Français Church
[edit]Dear Bruno, the church in Port-aux-Français seems to appear as “Notre-Dame des Vents” in some sources, and as “Notre-Dame du Vent” in others. Could you please advise, which exactly is the correct (or more preferable) name to use – “Notre-Dame des Vents” or “Notre-Dame du Vent”? Best, Apcbg (talk) 08:37, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Dear user,
- according to official references, the right name is "Notre-Dame des Vents". I take it from this very reliable website which refers itself to the report of the Commission of toponymy. I regretfully don't hold this report for an ultimate checking but I personnally know the webmaster of kerguelen-voyages and take his assertions for certain. In addition the engraved inscriptions below the statue are actually "Notre-Dame des Vents".
- We could add the building is not really a church but only a chapel, because it doesn't link to any parish and has been built on private intitiative.
- Amazingly, the only grave that has been placed close to the entrance of the chapel is a muslim one.
- Yours sincerely,
- Bruno

File:Livingston-Island-Map-2010.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Revent (talk) 09:07, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- The only reason I did not simply re-delete this is that you are explicitly claiming to be the representative of the copyright owner, and that it would be acceptable after a declaration of consent was filed with OTRS. I would not object if INeverCry chooses to do so pending OTRS verification, however. You may not simply re-upload a deleted file because you think the admin was wrong, you must instead request review of the decision at COM:UDR.
- Regarding the specific question asked at INeverCry's talk page, it is indeed possible to undo the delinking, once verification of the permission has been received. Revent (talk) 09:26, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Dear Revent, the requested permission has been mailed to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. The reason I re-uploaded that file was that its deletion request notification was posted on my talk page at 21:10, yesterday, and fifteen minutes later the file had already been deleted so I had no opportunity to participate in a due deletion process. Hope the issue would be settled now, and I would really appreciate it having assistance in the restoration of the bot-deteted links to the file. Best, Apcbg (talk) 11:49, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- It was flagged as a 'speedy', which is why it was deleted so quickly... personally, I probably would have not deleted it that way, since you were making an explicit claim to be the representative of the copyright owner that was noted in the image (I would myself have converted it to a 'delayed speedy' like is on it now), but I can't fault the decision as 'wrong', since it is typical that previously published works are speedily deleted absent evidence that the previous publication was itself under a compatible license. You should replace the the existing 'no permission since' template with an OTRS pending, with the date the email was sent, which will delay a potential deletion by 30 days (which should be long enough). Revent (talk) 14:12, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- (further note) Once it's marked as OTRS pending, ping me and I will restore the usages (adding the template is one of those things that should be done by the person with personal knowledge, for the record). Revent (talk) 14:14, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Dear Revent, many thanks for your explanation and instructions. The OTRS pending template has been placed as suggested. Best, Apcbg (talk) 16:17, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Source clarification
[edit]I know it's been +15 years since you uploaded it, but could you clarify where you got this image? Had it been published somewhere? DS (talk) 22:49, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- I scanned the 1916 photo from my copy of the book The Island of South Georgia by Robert Headland. The file had not been published before. Apcbg (talk) 07:23, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
- Terminology issues, sorry. What you mean is, although the file did not exist on the Internet before you uploaded it, the photo had been published in Robert Headland's 1984 book. Which does not mean it can't be on Commons, but we need to track provenance.
- That said, though, I'm not sure it can be on Commons just yet. When the copyright expires depends not on when the image was created, but on when it was first published. It also depends on when the photographer died - and Binnie died in 1956. So, as I understand it, this means the image won't be PD until January 1 2027. (Ironically, I only researched and wrote the article on Binnie because you credited him in the photo.) On the other hand, Binnie was the Resident Magistrate when he took the photo, and when the population is so tiny, there's an argument to be made that all his actions are in the course of his official duties... I'll leave it up to an admin. (Remember, deleted content isn't gone: even if the file gets deleted, it can be restored at the appropriate time.) DS (talk) 13:44, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
