I'm a heavy contributor to Wikimedia Commons, having contributed more than around 8,000 freely usable media files, and also have License reviewer status. I'd like to be more involved with Commons, and have many times had the desire to alter filenames. Although I do not have very many file rename requests, I am a valued contributor, and have made many more contributions to Commons than the guideline at the top of this section suggests (as an either/or) before making a request here. Thank you. Gage (talk) 21:47, 2 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working with a dozen volunteers on the WikiMOOC project (a MOOC to learn to edit Wikipedia). We will upload dozens of files here (the MOOC will be hosted here and also on the wikiversity) and it will be necessary to rename them to organize this category (criterion 4). It's easier to do it myself than to ask everytime. Moreover, I assure trainings about Wikipedia and Commons (see also my other account, on which I've Upload Wizard campaign editor rights) and I sometimes need to rename files (criterion 3 and criterion 4). I'm a sysop and oversight on fr-wikipedia. Thank you and sorry for my english. Jules78120 (talk) 12:17, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am an AP user with robust cross-wiki activity and I am a polyglot. In the last few months I have become more and more interested in the revision of files here on commons: mainly descriptions, categories and sometimes I help users from local wikis with minor doubts (import, geographic coordinates, and copyright issues, this happens mainly in local talks or at the meeting with newbies). I am currently involved in a WMF grant about new image tools and therefore my presence here is only going to increase. Now, one of the thing I have asked constantly in the last months whilst working on commons is to rename files. I now the File renaming guideline, I have even left a comment on the talk page some months ago about it. I've spoken to two it-N filemovers, one personally (Pierpao) and one here in his talk (Ruthven), and they both agreed they see no reason why I shouldn't ask for this flag. I think it will speed up my work. Thank you. Alexmar983 (talk) 17:24, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have uploaded many files over the years and would like this right so I can correct the filenames of my own uploads and the uploads of others. I've made a number of move requests recently and I'd like to participate in this work instead of merely adding to the workload of others. I've been active on Commons since 2006 and I've been an administrator (with a lot of experience with page moving and related tasks there) on en.wiki since 2004. Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 01:03, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Gamaliel: Not that it specifically reflects on your competence for this userright, but looking at your past requests... on December 25 you requested a rename, apparently using the RenameLink gadget, per "Criterion 10"... that criteria doesn't exist, and the gadget shouldn't let you do that (it actually parses the template transcluded in COM:RENAME). Any idea how that happened? I can't figure it out. Revent (talk) 12:54, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That is odd. It seems pretty clearly a criteria 3 move, so I don't know why I would have manually entered a non-existent criteria instead of just selecting the correct one from the dropdown menu, if that is how it happened. Sorry, I have no idea. Gamaliel (talk) 17:45, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have made c.3k edits over the last four years, including many uploads, and would like to be able to correct any mistakes in my uploads without bothering existing file movers and also make occasional amendments to others' files, eg to make file names more specific in Category:Takahashi Yuichi, where there are several of his paintings of salmon - for these I would like to include which collection the painting is in within the file name; I envisage most of my efforts will continue to be in uploading, along with further categorisation, and some renaming. It's really just a matter of having frequent occasion to move a file (almost invariably ones I've uploaded or transferred from Flickr), and feeling like I might as well just do it myself. It also seems highly likely I'd have some time to help out with other people's renames once in a while. My edit count isn't huge, but past the guideline above this section (and I've moved plenty of pages on Wikipedia, if that counts for anything). I'll be happy to better familiarize myself with the procedures for various situations before actually undertaking any such move, of course, but as I said it's primarily for straightforward moves of new files. Recently granted the filemover right on en Wikipedia, I would like to achieve that privilege here on Commons. My edit count is lower than the limit stated above; however, many of those edits were move requests, and none of them were denied. So I'm well-versed in knowing what files should or should not be renamed. I have studied several pages including the File renaming page and its subpage, /Recently declined rename requests. Two days ago I moved 31 Genus species pages, most of which had at least one Commons file and some with two. All but two files needed to be renamed to the correct genus. So there is a need, and I would like to help. I also like to pitch in with backlogs if and when they arise. Thank you. Paine Ellsworth (talk) 17:30, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jianhui67: Well, but why these images should be renamed? Where is the rule that aftr renaming city images should be renamed too? Old name of the city does not make the file name incorrect because it is photo/image/map in time when the city had previous name. And some users have paranoic desire to extirpate all uses of old names. So I think that such actons should be more discussed. So I suggest to revoke FM rights now and discuss this case with community.--Anatoliy (talk) 18:40, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Essential part of my work in ru-Wiki (and some others) is related to the PD-Art-100 and PD-Art-70 paintings. In particular, I keep uploading the files that are needed for the articles and the lists of paintings. Rather often I see incomplete descriptions of the existing files, such as, e.g., "File:Vasiliy smirnov 001.jpg" — I would prefer to rename it to "File:Vasily Smirnov The Death of Nero 1888.jpg", etc.). At the Commons, I have more than 1k edits, including a few hundred uploads — not only the paintings, but also my own CC-BY-SA photos. In the past, I had a few file moving requests: I do not remember if any of them has been rejected. In principle, I would not mind to get the Patroller rights as well (I have read the rules); but I can apply later if a separate application is needed. Thank you, — Adavyd (talk) 18:16, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Pls be careful with renames; your example is borderline.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:13, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I actually do not need this right (who without administrators does it really need?), but instead of asking other people again and again for renaming files I thought for lightening their workload I could request the right for myself. All my requests so far have been considered valid, but (naturally?) sometimes my suggestion was overruled. — Speravir_Talk – 21:12, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Speravir: What has been overruled exactly? --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:46, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: What I want to say: I suggested a new filename, but the actual filemover decided for a different name. This may be something, what naturally happens, though. For examples I’d had to search in my contribution history. – Speravir (Talk)
OK, in most cases the difference comes from keeping the DSC part or not (I usually opted for keeping it). Some examples with a bit more differences: Special:Diff/193633441, Special:Diff/192233260, Special:Diff/186379961, Special:Diff/184810934. — Speravir_Talk – 17:27, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Another related thing: I wasn’t aware of this when asking for enhancing rights, but perhaps this is important for your decision. If you understand German, see User talk:Speravir#CommonsDelinker and User talk:Achim55#Rechteänderung beim CommonsDelinker – oder was sonst?. If you do not understand, but are interested, leave a notice here, and I will try to explain this in English. — Speravir_Talk – 17:00, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Speravir: I am a bit concerned to be honest, for example such things. This page is only for requests related to renamed files. Generally we do not use delinker to replace files in such cases because it might be controversial. Did you read COM:RENAME? --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:18, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Last thing first: Yes , I’ve read (I’ve recently updated German translations). Regarding your concerns: Hmm, you can read German, but OK, let me try in English: I started using the script JustReplace, which does not rename any file, but it calls MediaWiki:Gadget-libGlobalReplace.js, which can call the CommonsDelinker. I tried it, and didn’t notice any problems, until Achim55 informed me on my discussion page (the warning on the JustReplace talk page has meanwhile been added by me). — Speravir_Talk – 17:37, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I regularly patrol, edit and upload Italy-related images, often moving them from Italian wikipedia through the Commonshelper application. I made several moves requests in the past, and while they were all accepted they required hours and sometimes days to be made. I would like to tweak the titles of several images I uploaded, and to fix the dozens of very vague names I regularly stumble in (eg. recently, many files in Category:Furto di sera bel colpo si spera) without weigh down the backlog. As I've recently been granted this right on the English Wikipedia, and it would help me if I had this right on Commons. I've uploaded many logos for American universities, and sometimes I make a spelling error or come across one that has obvious errors. If granted, I would only use this right when an error is made or for obvious reasons (e.g. initials of an institution that could stand for others). I understand the guidelines (as I don't believe I've had many turned down - maybe 1 or 2 at the most) and feel confident I wouldn't violate any pertaining to file moving. Thank you. Hi! I'm an active user here on Commons with roughly 7000 edits and 1.200 uploaded file (and also I'm admin on it.wiki since 2013); I frequently upload photos of animals and plants that need to be identified and subsequently renamed, so I suppose it could be better if I could handle those requests by myself instead of burdening someone else. There are a bunch of Bengali ebook uploaded in commons with long, machine generated filenames on Category:Books_in_Bengali. I want to rename these files to their original title (which is more meaningful) and use them for http://bn.wikisource.org project. Thank you. Tarunno (talk) 15:43, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Question:Why has your bot account TarunnoBot been blocked indef on en:wp? --Achim (talk) 16:50, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know the actual reason for block with a one bot edit. But user is a trusted user of Bengali Wikimedia Community. Jayantanth (talk) 17:29, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Achim55: There was a misunderstanding. I explained it, appealed for an unblock and left it to better judgement of admin. Discussion log can be found here. Tarunno (talk) 18:59, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The enwiki block issue is cleared up, was concern that this wasn't actually a bot with a bot name - block has been lifted on enwiki. — xaosflux Talk 00:31, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The user has 58 edits on commons. Concerned. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:19, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Can you please elaborate your concerns? May be I can help you to eleminate those. Thanks. -Tarunno (talk) 19:48, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What Steinsplitter is silently saying is that less than 100 edits on commons may not be sufficient to grant this right. Personally, I won't assign permissions like file mover to users with less than 500 edits here. Wikicology (talk) 17:41, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done @Tarunno: Since you've got a specific plan for using this right, I've made you autopatrolled and a filemover. Be careful, and if you mess something up, let me know. Get that edit count up to something respectable now. INeverCry 07:02, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am working in the organisation of Wiki Loves Monuments and, in many cases, I saw files that could have a name more clarifier or a set of files that should have an homogeneous name. I would like to solve it by my own. Once finished WLM 2016 I will continue with the organisation of the categories, so that right could help me. Moreover, sometimes I make a mistake and I would like to solve it; I will check the Category:Media requiring renaming to help others with that. Thank you. • To move files that I find on commons where the file names contain incorrect information, for instance paintings with the wrong year or artist in the name, buildings with the wrong street number etc, uploads from the upload wizard where the wrong information has been mass copied to each file by mistake. Because my bot imports the French Wiktionary sounds, it requires that the pronunciations keep the same naming norm: "language-region-word.oga". However during this job, I've noticed that a small minority, which represents at least dozens of pages, needs to be renamed. For one week I've already made several renaming requests, but I'm afraid that won't be enough.

So I would need the filemover right (and I've read Commons:File renaming for that). JackPotte (talk) 00:08, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I rarely need renaming for my own media, though I sometimes forget to remove the picture number from the image name. But it looks like file movers have considerable work handling all the requests for a name change, and I am willing to lend a hand. From what I manually checked (forgive me for possible incompleteness), they have done less than 10 requests for others: [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] - since I'm not too familiar with this process, I'd like to let fellow admins decide if these are enough. whym (talk) 06:23, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Through a suggestion to me I am applying for this right. I've requested lots of renaming during my time here, and I'm sure some of those who have helpfully changed file names for me could be getting a little bit tired of my frequent renaming requests, and could find better things to do. I think I'm pretty good at reformulating file names to the specific and accurate, not only with this, where just very occasionally the 'renamer' has only slightly altered my offered text, but with my own uploads. There are hundreds and hundreds of Geograph transfers I've found with innapropriate names (and inappropriate descriptions and wrong cats); these I am working through. If I am offered this I am hoping that others with the same rights will for a while keep an eye on what I am doing and give advice where necessary. Many thanks.
