This image is currently encoded in Palette mode. This is unnecessary, because all of the colors specified in the palette are fully-opaque shades of gray. This means that the image can be changed over to Grayscale mode, where each pixel remains only 8 bits (each pixel is now a literal value of gray rather than an index into the palette), and it is no longer necessary to store a palette at the beginning of the file, and the file has shrunk to 3.31 MB in size. Because this image's resolution is small enough that it does not have lower-resolution preview versions, improvements to the size of this file will benefit loading speeds on all pages where this image is used. The pixel format is fine, as RGBA is correct and warranted due to more than 256 different colors in the image and alpha-antialiased edges on the blocks. You'd have to crop out the frame, the existing file crops out the feet of the rightmost person of the trio on the left, there also appears to be some visual differences between the clouds of the two files so I'd recommend uploading your version as a new file and then just replacing usage on Wikimedia projects with your version as you see fit. This means that every pixel can be changed from a 32-bit RGBA value to an 8-bit Grayscale value, without changing how the image appears at all. I managed to find a PDF source for the portion of the 1972 catalogue in which this diagram appears. It's on the right side of page 10 of this document. I used pdfimages on the command line to extract the bitmap data from the page, imported it into GIMP, used the measure tool to straighten the angled graphic, and then cropped it. Then I ran it through OxiPNG and ZopfliPNG for good measure. The result is a 1048x739 version of the graphic that actually has a smaller filesize than the current version, at only 51 KB. I'm inclined to decline this request since File:Ruština ve světě.svg shows at least 30% of Mongolians speak Russian, and English Wikipedia says Russian was the most widely taught foreign language in 2005, and was compulsory in Year 7 in 2006. I'd like to dispute that - if you look at the source for the map you linked (Ethnologue), it doesn't say anything about 30% of Mongolians speaking Russian. Ethnologue's page on Mongolia lists 8 living languages, none of them Russian.

The The Routledge Handbook of Sociolinguistics Around the World (2024) has a section on Mongolia, and states: "In particular, English has become the most popular foreign language in Mongolia" (page 197, DOI: 10.4324/9781003198345-18).

For some stats, while Russian and English are both offered as part of university entrance exams, in 2021, only 866 students took the Russian exam (https://ikon.mn/n/2b27) while 22,376 students took the English exam (https://ikon.mn/n/2b19), a difference in factor of 25.

A Russian study entitled "Russian Language in Everyday Discourse of Mongols (Data from an Expert Survey)", 2022 (https://www.nauka-dialog.ru/jour/article/view/3964?locale=en_US) also confirms the above, with a 2016 statement quoted from Secretary General of the Mongolian Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature Sosorbaram Erdenemaa saying: "Сегодня русский язык … уже почти забыли»" (Today the Russian language... has almost been forgotten) Chinneeb (talk) 03:35, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

According to Arefyev 2012, the source used by Ethnologue, 40%+ of the population spoke Russian. (Chinneeb says that Ethn. doesn't mention Russian, but I just checked the latest edition, and it still does.) It may be that the younger generations don't know Russian, but I would think you could still get around Mongolia pretty well with it. There are other countries that we show on the PNG map that have less Russian than Mongolia, so it would be weird to remove Mongolia but not them.

Chinneeb, do you have sources to the contrary?

Specifically, Ethn. cites Arefyev as saying there are 1,196,000 L2 speakers of Russian in Mongolia, and (according to the WP-en article on the demographics of Mongolia), the population in 2012 was 2,867,744, which works out to 42% L2 speakers. But we'd need to check Arefyev (2012) to know how old his data was; it's presumably older than 2012, but we don't know by how much from the mention in Ethn. Older data would mean a higher %age at the time, since the population of Mongolia would've been smaller then, but also more time for the younger, non-Russia-speaking generations to grow in numbers. Something weird happened when I downloaded this image. Both Firefox and Chrome seemed to think that it was appropriate to download it as a .jpg file. This confused me for a little bit. I managed to confirm the file did indeed contain PNG data by using ffprobe on the command line.

There are actually only 8 distinct colors in the whole image. This means that we can use 4-bits-per-pixel palette mode. I performed the transformation using OxiPNG and ZopfliPNG and produced a result that is visually identical but is only 89 KB. I would like to replace the image with this improved version. This file is not using the wrong pixel format. It's 24-bits-per-pixel RGB, which is appropriate. The only thing wrong with this file is whatever software was originally used to encode the image did a somewhat shabby job. It was likely either written or configured to prefer speed over compression performance. I let OxiPNG and ZopfliPNG take a crack at it for a few minutes, and it shrank to about 6.7 MB. For File:European Public Prosecutor member states.svg it would be about standardization only. Using the blue used for most maps (#003399) and the red as defined here (#DA2131). Also would change grey to grey used most of the time (#c0c1c5).

For File:EU Single Market.svg I would replace light blue of non-EU-countries participating with purple used for Schengen (#a050ff).

Would also use EC yellow (#ffd617) as defined on EU colour site, where fitting.

As for German language one: again, standardizing colors. Using yellow for EU members who are obliged to join but haven't done so. Standardizing green (BG) to EC Green (#467A39), using purple for opt-out countries (here: Denmark).

I would once again like to update the Schengen Area map - as I have now a standard set of colors that I would like to apply (replace turquoise with EU green, replace orange with EU yellow). Also @Opihuck has rightly pointed out that Andorra IS indeed a country with no border controls, therefore de-facto participant. Have corrected that and added circle around Malta.

As for enlargement map: just the standard blue (#003399) instead of the one used now. EU red (#da2131) instead of the one used now). The different shades of green (candidates/candidates negotiating) are not perfect, contrast-wise, so the darker green would be even darker (#46a43b) and the light green would remain. After that, I inspected the remaining contents of the image and I found that the image contained only 11 distinct colors. Since 11 is less than or equal to 16, we can switch the image from 24-bits-per-pixel RGB to 4-bits-per-pixel Indexed mode. I performed the change using OxiPNG and ZopfliPNG. Thank you for checking the file, turns out that my browser (Chrome) somehow displays both the original and the new version as the same grey picture, even after refreshing/restarting the browser/restarting the computer (not because I tried to debug it , I just went to sleep)... I checked on Firefox and it displays properly. So I DID upload the correct version after all. You're probably right that the template isn't limited, I just thought so because the uploader refused upload, but the real reason was that I was uploading the same exact (correct) file I uploaded before and it logically didn't let me. Actully, that version is also wrong. If you see the "Blue sky with white sun" emblem in the flag, you will find out that in the actual CTUSF version of the emblem, the spikes are actully longer. You can compare this file with File:Logo of Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation.svg. I don't know why, and the CTUSF didin't explain the reason for this difference, but the file should present the real outlook of the flag. Thank you. MarsAoki (talk) 12:19, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

@Paul 012: deemed, the maps of File:ASEAN and East Timor.svg, File:ASEAN and Sri Lanka.svg, and File:ASEAN and Papua New Guinea (map) - since 2013.svg inappropriate and confusing as it shows South and Southeast Asia as a floating island with the rest of Asia missing. Making it a ineffective and confusing locator map, unlike its EU accession map counterparts. After much consideration I do agree with his reasoning. As uploader of the latter two, I would like to standardize this. In theory it should look like this or this now; with the rest of asia visible instead of a void.
