Dual copyright holders on Flickr
Hi. There are some photos on Flickr published by Festival Annecy that have proper license (for example: 1, 2, 3). Their copyright holders are stated as "Annecy Festival/K. Pauli" or "Annecy Festival/L. Pham". Are such photos OK to be uploaded here? Thank you.--Carniolus (talk) 15:55, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- Looks like those photographers are employed by Annecy Festival, such works are usually copyrighted by the festival organiser and should be fine to be imported to Commons with suitable licence (cc-by 2.0 and cc-by-sa 2.0 in this case). You can attribute both the festival and its photographers as stated on the original Flickr page.--Vulphere 17:18, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Can I upload Spanish-language videos to English-language WikiMedia Commons
I have several Spanish-language versions of English-language cancer information videos that I have uploaded already to WikiMedia Commons. I would like to add the Spanish-language videos to the Commons as well.
Can I add them using the English-language upload form on Wikimedia Commons, or do I need to use the upload form in Spanish?
All of the English and Spanish-language videos are works of the US government and are in the public domain. DarylM at NCI (talk) 16:45, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Overwrite
With COM:OW, File:MediaWiki bureaucrat.svg was updated to follow the new logo. But I would count this as a significant change. (It was already cat'ed as an old logo) and so I uploaded a new one. But the file was overwritten later anyway. Just unclear if I misunderstood the guidelines here. Terasail[✉] 18:34, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:W C H KING Shell Mex 1932.jpg
I have checked the copyright of this file and none exists. The archive of Photopress no longer exists and is thought destroyed in the London Blitz during world war two, I have followed others looking to clear copyright of other images from this agency and there is no longer copyright because nobody owns an archive as there isn't one--Peopleclub (talk) 08:30, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Peopleclub: What do you mean by "none exists"? Destruction of an entity, even if it fails to designate a successor, does not void its copyrights. It may leave them in limbo, but it doesn't void them. We'd need an actual reason why copyright has expired. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- I don't know which is why I am here! There is nobody to ask for copyright release or permission to use the photograph. It was taken in 1932 and the copy I used belonged to my grandfather which I now own. There is no copyright holder to contact. It's a found document and I would guess because of it's date would be out of copyright anyway?--Peopleclub (talk) 15:38, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- And it's apparently an orphaned copyright, so we can't use it. What makes you say you "would guess because of it's date would be out of copyright"? Is this based on something in particular? I would expect that relatively few works from the UK in the 1930s are out of copyright. Typically, copyright on photographs in the UK persists for 70 years after the author's death, which would now mean the author would have had to die in 1950 or earlier. I see no reason to presume someone working in 1932 was dead in 1950. - Jmabel ! talk 00:26, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- The photo is not attributed to an individual photographer but the copyright is attributed to an agency called PHOTOPRESS. So I am assuming perhaps wrongly that the copyright attributed to the agency has run out because the agency ceased to exist. Searching around for others who are trying to clear images to use from PHOTOPRESS are inconclusive. There is no copyright holder as such because it is as you say in limbo. Therefore I would guess that it is better the images are put into the public realm than that they can never be seen again. As a photographer myself I would not want to infringe another photographers copyright, on the other hand I wouldn't personally want my images to disappear for ever. My assumption is that there is no copyright holder. They cannot be cleared because no one holds the copyright. If no one holds the copyright then logically no copyright is being infringed?--Peopleclub (talk) 11:30, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Peopleclub: The photo may be free of UK copyright, not because the original agency ceased to exist (an event that does not make its properties disappear, they pass to someone), but because the photo was published by its copyright holder (the then existing agency) more than 70 years ago without identification of the name of the photographer. If, after reasonable enquiry, the photographer remains unknown, the photo may meet the condition of Template:PD-UK-unknown. On the description page, please don't use the vague wording "an agency that no longer exists". It sounds like that's hiding something. If that's Photopress, please write Photopress. As for what happened to the archive of Photopress, according to a participant to this site, there is a possibility that it may have been acquired by PA (which I guess refers to PA Images). -- Asclepias (talk) 15:08, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- I reached the same reference and when contacting PA images came to a dead end as others searching for copyright clearances also did. I don't think the archive exists, is not digitised or they ceased storing it, their archive appears to be recent photos only with no way of searching further back but I will continue to try and find out.--Peopleclub (talk) 15:26, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- I have entered it under PD-UK-unknown because I think I have tried every option as regards the photographer's identity. Having worked for an agency myself (AP) as a cameraman I think the agency has the copyright of the images and I'm not aware that I would have any claim myself to copyright or perhaps it is shared? I think I have made every reasonable effort to establish the photographers copyright and I believe it falls into that category, ie, it's seventy years since it was published without identification of the name of the photographer. I am not sure if I have added the template correctly and in the right place. Would appreciate if you could check if possible--Peopleclub (talk) 15:51, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- PD-UK-unknown seems reasonable. I moved the template from the description field to the licensing section. In my previous comment, I suggested a change to the author field, but not to the description or the source, which you have now removed. Your previous mentions in the description and source fields looked good, you could restore them. In the source field, you could specify something like "{{self-scanned}} from a copy of a press release from the artist's personal archive.", it that's the case of course. In general, it's useful to provide as much detailed information as possible. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:28, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Σωτήριος Δογάνης (talk • contribs) 10:01, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Good morning. In an attempt to post on Wiki commons some family photos related to the face of Archimandrite Eleftherios Noufrakis, my page was blocked and the photos tend to be deleted. These are photos that are family heirlooms but happen to have been published in previous related articles. How can I get rid of this exclusion? Thanks" - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Σωτήριος Δογάνης: Copyright of images is generally held by the photographer, not the subject of the photo. If they are family photos: are you the heir to the photographer's intellectual property rights? (]f they are professionally taken photos, it is unlikely that you own the copyright.)
- No idea what you mean about a page being blocked, could you be more specific as to what page and what are the symptoms?
- Assuming you do legitimately own the rights to the photos, please see COM:OTRS for how best to grant a license. It's not going to be entirely simple in a case like this, though, because they were already published without a license grant, and I assume that was not in a place where you can retroactively state a license (e.g. that is impossible to do for print publication). - 15:29, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Modifications policy
Have added a number of photos to commons over the years, mainly on tennis, and would like to clarify some aspects. 1) When an image with borders is uploaded such as File:Katie Gillou 1904.png can I crop the borders and add it as a new version (see e.g. File:Gwen Sterry 1926.png) or should the cropped version be uploaded as a separate image with Template:Extracted from or Template:Derived from added? 2) What is the difference between Template:Extracted from and Template:Derived from and which should be used in this case? 3) Is there a policy on which modifications, if any, are allowed on images, specifically related to sharpening, contrast correction, level correction and despeckling? Thanks. --Wolbo (talk) 12:07, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Wolbo: Given that that came from a GLAM, in this case Gallica, I'd put any crop at a separate location. Just use the Crop Tool, which will do all the required tagging as part of its process.
- "Extracted from" specifically means a crop. "Derived from" is broader: could be retouching, a hand-drawing based on a photo, a montage of multiple works, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Copyrights to photos which where taken more than 100 years ago

I would just like to confirm, since I see there have been changes to the upload tools for images and licencing.
I have some photos of old photos which are of the construction of this pass, they have been on facebook and I ask the source, if he would post to wiki, he said I could do that he get my better copies, akak with his phone instead scans. we are talking 1898, there are photos on the wall at transnet, he is HR for transnet.

- Hi! This would be very cool. Thank you for bringing this up for discussion.
- You'll also need to check the conditions on Template:PD-1996, because upload to commons requires that images be PD in the US too. Here are the questions that haven't yet been addressed:
- were these photos published somewhere? If they were from a private collection, then different rules apply
- were these photos not published in the US? If published in the US, then standard US rules apply, in which case we care about if they were published before or after the moving 1926 cutoff
- Hope this helps! And I may be erring in the details, so feel free to call me on it if something doesn't sound right. Jlevi (talk) 11:51, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Secondely they were created in Indian subcontinent before its independence and were created before URAA dates and their authourship is unknown just like photos of many other poets like en:Mirza Ghalib and en:Mir Taqi Mir and most of the poets and writers have been died more than 100 years ago probably before 1926. Wallu2 (talk) 12:25, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- If I am reading the template correctly, if the photograph was created before 1958, which is most likely considering these poets died before 1926, it is almost certainly in the public domain. You would have to put Template:PD-India-photo-1958 and Template:PD-1996 on the image (assuming that it is a published work). If the photograph was created before 1901, then it is in the public domain without question, as even non-published works would be out of copyright. In short, you should put Template:PD-India-photo-1958 and Template:PD-1996 on the image. If it was created before 1901, it is 100% out of copyright and if it was created between 1901 and 1958 there is a 99.99% chance it is out of copyright. Zoozaz1 (talk) 01:03, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

uploading fotos
Hello,
I have uploaded two fotos. It seems, I have not done it properly. Please help me to publish these two fotos that were taken by a photographer and paid by me in order to be used by wikimedia/wikipedia.
Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Torkel S Waechter (talk • contribs) 14:55, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Torkel S Waechter: You don't say what country, but in most copyright would belong to the photographer unless signed over in writing (some countries don't even allow that). If you have a written transfer of copyright to you, follow up as explained at COM:OTRS to document that you own the copyright. Or you can have the photographer write to OTRS themselves, or indicate the relevant free license on a site clearly under their control and reference that in the "permission" field of the {{Information}} template. In any of these cases, we need a specific free license (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}) broad enough to allow derivatives and commercial use (though you can also add {{Personality rights}} as a reminder that the license covers only copyright issues, not your moral rights as the subject of the photo). "may be used for free promoting the work of the author Torkel S Wächter" is certainly nothing of the sort. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Daniel Kelechi: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user. Usually when someone uploads a smaller jpg image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you created the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including original EXIF metadata. If you did not create the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Trouble uploading a photo I took myself (and for which I am the "Owner")
Hello friends and colleagues:
I posted a Wiki site for Leon Katz, O.C., O. Ont. months ago - last fall, in fact: I can't upload a photo - because a copyright issue seems to come up each time: I took the photo myself, in 2008.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Leon_Katz_(biomedical_engineer)#Early_life_and_education
Can you help? 1) when is the site likely to be published? 2) how do I upload my photo?
Thank you very much! AAA — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiUName (talk • contribs) 16:38, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @WikiUName: Hello, You uploaded File:Leon Katz OC OOnt (Biomedical Engineer) (Photo- Floralove Katz).jpg on 28 December 2020 to Commons and you uploaded the duplicate File:Leon Katz OC, OOnt, PEng (biomedical engineer).jpg on 12 January 2021 to Commons. No issues of copyright have been raised. You tried to insert non-existing files in a draft on the English-language Wikipedia. If you insert one of the files linked above, there should be no problem. And please request on Commons deletion of the other file as duplicate. You uploaded File:Leon KATZ Biomedical Engineer 1955.jpeg on 7 January 2021 to the English-language Wikipedia, which was deleted there because it had been previously published in a newspaper and the credit was to the Montreal Heart Institute. If your question is about some other photo, please specify with more details. If by "site", you mean the draft article on the English-language Wikipedia, you must ask there. Maybe you can ask the user who reviewed your draft or the Teahouse. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:07, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Palestine flag colors
Can you please consider changing the red and green colors? In the images released by the Palestinian government, the two colors appear to be brighter than those currently used on Wikipedia. [2], [3], [4]--Sakiv (talk) 23:49, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Sakiv: Feel free to upload what you consider a more accurate image, and to convince the various Wikipedias that they should use yours. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- There are already variants in Category:SVG flags of Palestine, is one of those what you want? It seems that File:Flag of Palestine.svg is being treated as an updatable file, reflecting the current best interpretation, so changing it shouldn't be out of the question. --ghouston (talk) 01:54, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- Very good. I think 2012 variant is the most common and closest to the one used in the sources. Unfortunately I don't know how to upload new versions of svg files.--Sakiv (talk) 02:17, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Copyright help regarding File:Marina Georgieva.png
Hochachtungsvoll, Dimitar Geogriev — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheThrakian (talk • contribs) 00:09, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- Jmabel ! talk 01:09, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Removing Watermark
I uploaded File:Anushka Sen, Bhavesh Balchandani, Jannat Zubair.png from bollywoodhungama website which publishes them under CC 3.0. It had a watermark. So I cropped the photo and uploaded another file which is File:Anushka Sen at a party.png because I needed only that girl's image at english wikipedia article. I added template : extracted to this to show its relation to former file. Still it is tagged for speedy deletion because due to cropping watermark was removed so copyright violated. So what is the right way of doing this without copyright violations ? Parnaval (talk) 17:02, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Parnaval: The speedy request is now changed to a regular DR to allow discussion. Maybe the speedy nominator was mistaken about the notion of free license. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:26, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Parnaval: I don't see where the source website indicates the file is under a free license. Elli (talk) 18:53, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: The BollywoodHungama license is at Template:BollywoodHungama. However, it seems the event was not in India? In that case, this photo would not be offered under this license and the file may be deleted for that reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:19, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Asclepias: , But originally I asked question about watermark. What about it ? Was it the right way to crop the image ? Parnaval (talk) 16:17, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Parnaval: Yes it is correct. The text of a removed watermark should be transcribed somewhere in the description page, when it is not already present there. In the case of this image, there is already the requested attribution to "Bollywood Hungama" and a link to the original image at the source. The watermark is basically the same information, so it may not be necessary to duplicate it, but if you think it is necessary, you can transcribe it. To link to the full image on Commons, you used the template "image extracted" instead of "extracted from" but that's a detail. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:44, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Removing images
Hi, This image has been nominated for removal in september 2020 but is still available. I,ve noticed that there are more of those images. Is there a scarce amount of moderators, or is there another reason for the delay? An other example is this stamp that seems te be under review since 2012. Hi,
I am working on Trustly and we made a rebranding to this logo in last year. I need to change the logo of the Trustly Wikipedia website. I need to change these sites on wiki: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trustly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trustly
The logo can be found here:

I promise that this is the correct logo as of now.
--WikifredrikV (talk) 08:06, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- @WikifredrikV: Hi, and welcome. Please license it on your official website or social media or send permission via OTRS, and note what you did on the file description page and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Trustly Regular Logotype Horizontal Trustly-Green RGB.png. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.
User accounts and "corporate" accounts?
What is Commons' policy on user accounts which represent some "corporate" body (broadly speaking)? What if these are used by multiple people?
On en:WP, this is specifically forbidden. Poorly implemented, as it catches a lot of new editors who then find themselves summarily and innocently blocked, never to return, but that's en:WP's problem. On Commons, such accounts seem to be widely used and accepted (rightly, IMHO). Is this what Commons' policy states?
If such an account is used at Commons, is it under any restrictions? Can it upload images? Can it upload images without having to use COM:OTRS, as for a regular single-user account? Can its images be deleted for no reason other than this potentially shared sourcing? How should such images be credited / licensed? As always, we require an "Author" value, when what we really require is often "Rights holder" instead. How must this be handled? How should this be handled?
If such an account is created and used here, how does that translate to en:WP, with unified logins? Andy Dingley (talk) 11:22, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: Please see Commons:Username policy; come back here if you still have questions. 4
- A single interaction with OTRS will be needed to validate that the account is what it says it is.
- If a particular login name would not be allowed on en:WP, please don't use it there! Yes, it will exist there, just don't use it. - Jmabel ! talk 18:26, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

- & it looks like it's gotten to be all over the place, on quite a few sites that say nothing about a free license. At this point we'll need you to go through the process described at COM:OTRS to sort it out. If there is a way you are usually credited by other sites, let them know that, too, so we can know that this account is tied to that name, and can upload work published under that name. If that's not clear, one of the OTRS volunteers can probably clarify it once you start a correspondence. Warning: they are a bit backlogged. - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

Corrections to FM21-76 U.S.Army Survival Manual contents in Orientation using the Moon section
The information given is the opposite of accurate.
"We say there is a new moon or no moon when it is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. Then, as it moves away from the earth's shadow, it begins to reflect light from its right side and waxes to become a full moon before waning, or losing shape, to appear as a sliver on the left side." on page 233 of 277 depending on format.
It should say:
"We say there is a new moon or no moon when it is closest to the sun as seen from the earth. We are seeing the unlit side of the moon at that time, though it is still slightly illuminated by reflected light from the earth."
or
"We say there is a full moon when it is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. Then, as its orbit continues, rising later and later each day, we begin to see less light from the edge furthest from the sun (waning) until it is reflecting no light at all during a new moon, at this point it is closest to the sun and actually between the sun and the earth when a solar eclipse occurs. These alignments are infrequent but periodical, as are the times when the earth shadows the moon from sunlight during a lunar eclipse."
Hard to believe it's been in publication so long while retaining that obvious mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David L. Hasse (talk • contribs) 14:20, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

- Hello @David L. Hasse: and @Jeff G.: , worth noting that the current version is ATP 3-50.21 last major revision in 2018 with annual updates. FM 21-76 also had annual updates and underwent periodic major revisions over it's lifetime, but has long since been deprecated. Anyway, commons absolutely should be keeping such old documents for their historical value as they are both pd-us-gov, and often very hard to find once the government ceases to distribute them, and prints that contain errors are of especial historical interest. None of this should stop you from uploading later revisions so researchers can see the full-historical progression of the document. Best, 91.86.106.112 14:00, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

- Since you haven't indicated what photo you are talking about, it is hard to know what image you mean. I'm going to guess File:Merchants and Planters Bank Building, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.jpg but I have no idea what you are saying is "wrong" about it.

Uploading old photographs/newspaper excerpts
I am attempting to upload images in support of expanding existing Wikipedia pages and creating new biographical pages. These images are taken from Newspapers.com, from university collections allowing image downloads, or from sources such as Google Books scans of old periodicals which are freely downloadable.
I have full source attribution information available for all images; most of this information is at least 100 years old so obtaining original permissions would be challenging at best. These images are an important part of the prospective biographical pages and would enhance existing Wikipedia pages (e.g., a playbill for a play produced in 1920).
What's the policy on this? Will I be uploading these only to have Wikipedia remove them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cholli2 (talk • contribs) 02:31, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Cholli2: You don't say what country, but anything from the U.S. that was published in 1925 or earlier will be {{PD-US-expired}}. For most other countries, unless you know the author's death date, you can't really take anything newer than 1900. For 1900 or earlier, you can use {{PD-old-assumed}}. - Jmabel ! talk 06:10, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi, i want to ulpoad 2 logotypes for a company page, but they're not a my own work but protected by copyright. I've red this on one of your pages "Commons accepts images of text in a general typeface and of simple geometric shapes, even if it happens to be a recent trademarked logo, on the grounds that such an image is not sufficiently creative to attract copyright protection.[2] Such images should be tagged with {{PD-ineligible}} or one of the list of more specific tags for this kind of works (e.g. {{PD-textlogo}} for simple logos)." - NB:The new file is this one, the old one is this one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Orlando of Arrakon "Kharakovh" (talk • contribs) 16:51, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- You made a file of type .png and, as the error message says, you were trying to upload it in the page of a file of type .jpg and that cannot work. As a solution, you could make a .jpg file and upload it over the existing .jpg. Or you can leave your .png image as a separate file.
- That was to answer the technical question, but please allow also a few other observations about the files. Firstly, the authorship attribution of the old image is to author Uriy Dzubenko (although it's not clear where that attribution comes from). But you attributed your copy to someone else. To respect the CC license (if the license is valid), you should preserve the attribution to the original author (if that attribution is valid). Also to respect the CC license (if the license is valid), if something was changed in the new image by comparison to the old image, an explanation of the change should be included somewhere in the description page. Secondly, there seems to be a potential problem with the license of the old file because that old file itself is a copy of an image on an external website and there does not seem to be a free license at the original external source, which is all rights reserved. If the license of the old file is not correct, then the same license on a new copy is also not correct. If the real author of the original source agreed to a free license, that should be confirmed on the website or through OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:14, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

Good day.
Wikipedia has a page dedicated to a relative.
The page is there but the photo is not. I would like to place it, but how?
The instructions are too many pages and not for the average mind.
The photo is on the Internet and in the home archive / portrait photo /. The photo in both cases is 40 years old. I tried to post it from the Internet - it does not work. The problem with copyright and all that.
How can a third-party, but relative person post a photo on Wikipedia through Wikimedia Commons?
Sorry for the pun. Didn't think it was that problematic..
Is the author of the photograph still alive? If not, are you an heir? Copyright is transferable after death and if it's from a relative of yours and they own the copyright © they can send permission through the OTRS. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:48, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Preserving image on Flickr
Hello. I uploaded three images to Flickr, that are reachable in a WP article (via links in references). The reason is that copyright issues prevented them from being uploaded to Commons. OTOH. Details in the article can NOT be backed up without them. Here's one of three: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48627229401_c4c1c40896_b.jpg Now, if I deleted this image from my Flickr account, this link in a WP article (reference section) would likely become broken within a week or so. So, how can the image be preserved long term, without having to rely on my having a Flickr account for eternity. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 11:47, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi JimPercy, You can use Wayback Archive to do this - When saving add "https://web.archive.org/save/" to the URL followed by the image URL (so ie https://web.archive.org/save/https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48627229401_c4c1c40896_b.jpg),
- If you get stuck let me know and I'll archive them all for you, I hope this helps, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 11:51, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Thanks. I was able to update that URL and another, w/o any problem. (??It seems like the pair were saved by an unknown party to "wayback" in Aug. 2019.) But, this is a newer upload of mine to Flickr (2-mos. ago) into the WP article's reference section. Hence, maybe that's part of the problem. There is an error message and it doesn't work. I updated the URL in brackets from: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51100002568_3cabb956b4_b.jpg ... TO ... https://web.archive.org/save/https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51100002568_3cabb956b4_b.jpg I get the error message: Hrm. The Wayback Machine has not archived that URL. JimPercy (talk) 15:06, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi JimPercy, Looks like Wayback's been down as your archived images were slow loading too, It's also saying the image's archived and then telling me it doesn't exist at the provided link - Unfortunately Wayback does go down from time to time.
- I've archived the image at https://archive.is/dWRwk which as a temporary thing should be fine (I don't know if Archive.is allowed but if Wayback won't archive the image then that's the next best option.
- I'll retry later and tomorrow if need be - could just be Wayback having a funny 5 minutes!, Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 16:42, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Well, I went to my Flickr account, "You">Camera Roll" (from dropdown), and see all three images. Yet, just the first two were uploaded to Wayback, and not the third. I notice the alternative link you inserted works. I guess I will wait a day or two, in case Wayback is temporarily down (it does seem to be running slow) or not uploading new images due to a glitch. PS. This is the most minor of the three, so it doesn't really matter if the link is temporarily broken, at WP in reference section. I mean, no need for me to insert that temporary link. JimPercy (talk) 19:56, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi JimPercy, Unfortunately I don't know why the third wasn't archived and annoyingly it still wont archive it either, I've even tried https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51100002568_3cabb956b4_c.jpg which is a smaller version but to no avail.
- My only suggestions would be either to retry in a weeks time or failing that use the Archive.is cite. You could always create another flickr account and reupload the photo and retry archiving again (with a new link) but that seems a lot more hassle than it's worth.
- Sorry I couldn't be of any more help, Take care and stay safe, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:33, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Okay, I suppose that's enough time on this one, as reckon you have questions from others to answer. I had the image on my computer so uploaded it again to Flickr. I then entered the new URL name into the WP article, but it didn't work. Same error message. So, I instead inserted the link going to archive.today (that you suggested). You can check up on it if care to (or make any change, naturally) at WP, in the article: Paul Martin (illustrator). The link to it is in Ref. 98. JimPercy (talk) 20:36, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- I've changed the cite link slightly so that the whole image shows, Other than that all looks fine. Happy editing. –Davey2010Talk 12:16, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Add on. Oddly, this old link seems to work now. It's like there was a logjam at Wayback (causing the error). https://web.archive.org/web/20210418104811/https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51100002568_3cabb956b4_b.jpg I might switch back to that one later, for consistency (with the other two). - Wikimedia Commons (this site) does not accept biographies.
- Our sister project Wikipedia does accept biographies but cartainly under their policy on conflicts of interest if you are the parent and manager of the subject, you are absolutely the wrong person to write an encyclopedia article about her.
- If you have solid references for this and if Rachel has received significant, independent coverage for her singing, you can submit the set of citable material that would form the basis for someone to write an article at en:Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Arts_and_entertainment/Performing_arts#Artists. - Jmabel ! talk 07:41, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

- @LtLemonade: The author as noted there, with link, would be a decent photo credit. I would probably prefix that with "Flickr user". However, since it is (presumably correctly) nominated for deletion as a violation of the copyright of the statue, it would seem to be moot how best to credit they original photographer.- Jmabel ! talk 07:44, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

- I believe it should be deleted. No comment on whether the account is a generally good source, but he took a photo of a statue that is apparently, itself, copyrighted, so there is no way to use it legitimately on Commons without the sculptor's permission. Do you have some reason to think the sculpture is in the public domain? If so, explain that in the Deletion Review discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Photos taken by deceased relatives
My Norwegian grandfather took some pictures during WWII and the years after, I want to upload some of them to Commons. He died 25 years ago, which means the right to the images have expired according to the Norwegian copyright rules.
But some of the photos were not taken in Norway. Is it then the rules in the country where the photo was taken that apply, or the rules in the country where the photographer was a citizen? And if the images are released according to the Norwegian Copyright Act, does that mean that they will also be released for international use? --Cavernia (talk) 16:01, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Generally rules of any country apply with its jurisdiction only. However Commons requires a file to be free in the country where it was first published and in the USA. Ruslik (talk) 16:12, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- None of the photos have been published anywhere. --Cavernia (talk) 16:13, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- In this case you are welcome to publish them here under a free licence. Please use the {{Heirs-license}} template, e.g.
{{Heirs-license|Cc-by-4.0}}
While the images are now public domain in Norway, they would still be copyrightable in the United States, so we need a free licence from you as the heir. Alternatively you might want to release them into the public domain worldwide using the {{PD-heirs}} template. I created a vector version File:Théorie_des_cordes-échelle.PNG but could neither insert NowSVG for the new file File:String-theory-strings.svg on the page of the original nor remove the request for a vector version.
Thank you!

- Please upload your SVG as a new file. You cannot overwrite a file with another file format. Once you have uploaded the new file, you may remove the request for a vector version by editing the page File:Théorie des cordes-échelle.PNG. De728631 (talk) 16:58, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

How do you make ribbons?
I was wondering how to make ribbons like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Legion_Honneur_GC_ribbon.svg and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Legion_Honneur_Chevalier_ribbon.svg.
- The original uplpader used Inkscape to make it, it is a free image making software that unfortunately isn't available in mobile devices but does work on stationary desktop devices. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:16, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Help with a category decision
Hello,
I have been trying to fill in missing images etc. for Pakistan on List of cultural heritage sites in Punjab, Pakistan. One of the sections for each site is District. To help editors on enwiki, I have been filling in the district on the Commons.
For some reason, I am reverted over one site: Category:Tomb of Lala Rukh, Attock. I have been reverted twice adding Category:Attock District in a short time by the same editor, though per the List and per Tomb of Lala Rukh, this site is in Attock District. When I reverted once I explained in an edit note the reason was the List, but I was reverted instantly. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 21:01, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Krok6kola: Would you please ping whoever reverted you? I'm not even going to look any further until you do that. - Jmabel ! talk 21:28, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @E4024: per your request. Krok6kola (talk) 21:30, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I think that editor is reverting since the site is already in Category:Hasan Abdal so that Category:Attock District is redundant. My thinking is that since the "List of cultural heritage sites in Punjab, Pakistan" asks for the district and the city name is not one easily recognizable by many, the district is important. It seems no one is willing to hunt through the Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Punjab, Pakistan, to find images for the List except me! Krok6kola (talk) 22:45, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi I tried to upload to Wikipedia a sharing of Thomas Brody Sangster with licenses that are allowed to share on all sites and everyone is allowed to use this image, but I do not know what to call this specific type of license and canceled the upload of the image. I'm really happy if you help me find a way to find what the right license of this picture is because I do not quite understand it but it's important for me to upload this picture so I'm happy to help

Official portrait, may have originated from the subject's Twitter account. Requires COM:OTRS permission. Does anyone know what template should be used?--Kai3952 (talk) 17:01, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Kai3952: {{Copyvio}} unless we either have OTRS or the Twitter account offers a license. If we we either have OTRS or the Twitter account offers a license, then whatever license is offered. - Jmabel ! talk 18:45, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- I saw the history of the file showing User:Vulphere marked it with the {{No permission since}} template. I'm not doubting your answer, I'm just confused. Why did he not mark it with {{Copyvio}} rather than {{No permission since}}?--Kai3952 (talk) 05:25, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- Sometimes it really does matter, and sometimes it doesn't matter that much which template you choose. It's true that each template has its own applications and they are not to be used indifferently. Basically, "copyvio" when the claims by the uploader are obviously false, regular DR when the claims are dubious, and "no permission since" when the claims are plausibly true but require evidence. However, there may be some cases when a claim is likely wrong, so basically a case either for "copyvio" or for a regular DR, but the file looks possibly legitimate and the wrong statement could be corrected with more information with OTRS. IMO, it depends on your evaluation of the degree of probability that the upload is legitimate. My personal subjective criterion is that when it looks reasonably plausible that the upload is legitimate, "no permission since" may be preferable. If not, then it's "copyvio". You may place your threshold higher or lower. In the case of File:Anna Cen.png, despite the "own work" part that may need to be changed, it can be one or the other IMO, depending if you approach it only with a theoretical view or if you also consider a practical aspect. The username of the uploader suggests that they are probably affiliated with the business. And it is reasonable to expect that the business either holds the rights to the official photo of its CEO or can obtain them from the photographer. In turn, that suggests a plausibility that the uploader may have permission for the license and that they can provide evidence of it. The uploader probably did not personally take the photograph and the "own work" part is probably incorrect. Because the claim of own work looks wrong, "copyvio" or a regular DR can be used. At the present time, regular DRs can remain open for a long time. "Copyvio" would result in a quick deletion of the file. And it will be restored if the evidence for the license is provided. In total, that will have required two interventions by administrators (one deletion, one undeletion) and one or two interventions by OTRS members (one undeletion request if the member is not an administrator, one validation of the file) and you may leave a frustrated user. If "no permission since" is used, it leaves one week for the uploader to fix the situation. If the uploader does nothing within the week, the file is deleted and the situation becomes identical as if "copyvio" had been used. But if it is fixed, in total, that will have required no action by administrators and one intervention by an OTRS member (the validation of the file) and it leaves a happy user. In short, it may be more a case for "copyvio" or for a regular DR, but in the circumstances "no permission since" is perhaps not bad. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:11, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Because in the past I was accused by Reke of doing a destroy user pictures using DR (see: special:diff/514139241) and now you suggesting me to use "copyvio" or a regular DR. I think there should be consensus first. If you are right, can you explain it to him?--Kai3952 (talk) 19:12, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Kai3952: If you don't feel there is yet a clear consensus, then a DR is exactly what to do. A DR is a means of getting a consensus either to keep or delete. - Jmabel ! talk 04:42, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- No, your thought is opposite to his, so it's not feasible to achieve your suggestion. Because he objected to my submission of the pictures to DR. His explanation is that we should try to solve the problem instead of destroying the hard works of others. In my opinion, submissing pictures to DR is not vandalism, but I don't know how to communicate with him about this clearly. I think you better convince him to let him understand how DR works. Until you have a consensus, I promised him that I will not submit any pictures to DR (which means I temporarily admitted my mistake). If no one can help, I may never be able to use DR.--Kai3952 (talk) 01:28, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

- No, I'm not talking about File:Anna Cen.png, but about Reke. Although I understand you point of view (a DR is a means of getting a consensus either to keep or delete), I feel that, given that Reke is strongly opposed to the alleged 'problematic picture' were being nominated for delete by me, it would better be for you (or Asclepias) to explain the DR to him.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:11, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

- First of all, I am sorry that the following text was translated by machine, because I don't have much time to correct it.
- Deletion requests is a good system most of the time, but some requests are deeply offensive. There was a volunteer in Taiwan. He set an English name on his camera exif, which did not match his Chinese name, so the uploaded photos were asked to be deleted. And I myself once had a file that was proposed to be deleted just because exif was not set. Although the reason given in the DR is to block these deletions, it still makes the uploader feel that he is not trusted. Because he stated that this photo was taken by him, but other people doubted this statement with less direct evidence.
- The above two examples were not made by Kai, but Kai's DR is also often offensive. What's more disturbing is that when I expressed the offensiveness of these behaviors in the previous two examples, the DR person could understand that he was too harsh and expressed apologies in the discussion; however, Kai would not. He will insist that he understands the rules of the wiki correctly and asks those who point out his improper interpretation of the rules to go to the "community" for discussion. In the end, he will always fall into lengthy arguments.
- I really don't recommend him to DR the files he is not sure about. He believes that files that are clearly supposed to be deleted will cause controversy, so the files that he is not sure whether to delete will only cause more troublesome problems. --Reke (talk) 11:23, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Reke: Please take a look at File:無濾嘴新樂園牌菸DSCF6022.jpg. Per COM:PACKAGING, "product packaging carrying original printed designs cannot be uploaded to Commons, even if you personally own the physical object and even if you took the photograph yourself." What do you think about this?--Kai3952 (talk) 04:59, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- Probably a matter of whether that particular packaging is old enough to be out of copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- Jmabel, I appreciate your answer; please have the patience to read my reply (or, say, to read the whole issue):
- What I really care about is what Reke thinks, because that is the only way to resolve the disputes and disagreements.
- I know that Reke is a volunteer for Wikimedia Taiwan, but he is not an administrator. Since August to December last year, he has communicated with me on my talk page with regard to user's complaints about my misconduct (improper understanding of the policies, improper use of the DR procedures, unreasonably requiring OTRS permissions from the original author for the release of the picture from Facebook,...etc). Nevertheless, things did not get better from there (or, say, things did not go as smooth as I had actually expected), as he often intervened in ways that argument and accusation. In the end, my consensus with Reke was that stop using DR and promised not nominate any pictures anymore.
- I remember Jmabel said to me at the help desk: "I personally would appreciate if next time this comes up, you try to learn how to do it (and to do it right) so admins aren't stuck doing other people's basic tasks." I can understand what he mean...he encouraged me not to be influenced by others, and then I try to focus on what me can do to help (such as to learn how use {{Duplicate}}). It will be possible to provoke Reke's backlash if I learn how to do it. Because my edits will be considered by him as vandalism (doing a destroy pictures using DR). If someone can persuade him to give me a chance, I am confident that I can do better and I believe it has a strong impact on my daily works.
- To be honest with you, I have a psychological shadow on Reke. He often would appear out of nowhere to interfere with me in the past (including zh.wikipedia). Unfortunately, no matter how good I was and how much I learned, it seems that he thought everything I do is causing more trouble. This has not happened again recently, but I felt that I am being deliberately targeted by him. So, I don't know how to communicate with him. I have emailed Wikimedia Foundation three times no one responds to me until today still no response.--Kai3952 (talk) 09:08, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- I still don't get why you personally are even the least bit concerned with what happens to this particular photo (File:無濾嘴新樂園牌菸DSCF6022.jpg) which you asked us to look at, nor what (if anything) it has to do with your apparent conflict with Reke. You asked us to look at the photo and evaluate. I gave my opinion. You responded in a manner that had nothing to do with what you asked for. If this is how you are behaving toward Reke I fully understand why Reke is annoyed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:19, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- So, your suggestion is what? Focus on discussing this picture: File:無濾嘴新樂園牌菸DSCF6022.jpg?--Kai3952 (talk) 17:39, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Kai3952: My suggestion is that if you are having fights with Reke, and that bothers you, walk away from issues where Reke is involved. I'm sure there is plenty on Commons to do that does not involve Reke, and I doubt there is something unique that you bring to such matters (or at least to most such matters, you don't always have to walk away). It is not any of our jobs to fix every time someone is wrong on the Internet. On en-wiki, I walked away from articles in areas of my expertise to avoid conflicts like this. If you think there is a copyright issue with File:無濾嘴新樂園牌菸DSCF6022.jpg, start a DR, state your opinion clearly, and then disengage from it. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Looking at my talk page (see: [5], [6], [7], [8]), I sighed more heavily. He kept hounding me over six months, and I could see that he wanted to stop me from nominating pictures to DR, which is likely to cause more disputes within their community (the relationships within Taiwan's community and between me and Taiwanese users already have some challenges), and "my personal problems" arising therefrom. The result of this bad experience is that I will often be afraid the same thing will happen to me again. Despite most of my edits are good faith and reliable, I have not had much experience with understanding what pictures that should be deleted. I devote a major chunk of my time in working the task that has been given to me (except to nominate pictures for delete) and in researching about inductive methods for the categorization of files. This is why I hesitate and this is my dilemma.--Kai3952 (talk) 04:55, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Translation of categories
When categorising images I came across this: Category:Kipferl. The category has the Austrian German name for the pastry, which is odd as I have ever only seen categories named in English. There doesn't seem to be an English title for that one, except for the Wikidata box. I'm still new to Commons and don't know how the translation thing works here. (But I'm getting more accustomed to the environment here, and coming from a ride on Wikidata this place feels like a godsend although I earlier complained about the complexity of Commons. Anyway...) Should categories be translated? Can/should I do it? How then? Regards --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 00:13, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
- "Kiffi" isn't really English, either, it's Hungarian. There isn't really any English name for this; what people will use in English will depend on the heritage of the speaker (or the baker). Austrian German seems as good a choice as any. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
I thank User:Jmabel for the reply. However, my general question remains: Should category names be translated? Or are categories always named in English? --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 23:03, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Mango från yttre rymden: English is preferred when there is a common English name. In this case, I believe there is not. - Jmabel ! talk 01:55, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Uploading bank logos and trademarks
I was hoping to upload the logo of a co-operative bank. I must assume it's implicitly trademarked. The logo contains an image and a text and is in PNG format. Can I still upload it to Wikimedia Commons without running into copyright trouble? I'm sure the bank won't mind. But I want to make sure the image doesn't get removed from Wikimedia Commons. I intend to use it in the logo field in the bank's Wikidata page as well. --Eternaltyro (talk) 12:49, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Eternaltyro: Please have an authorized representative post permission on the organization's official website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:09, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

- Trademark is not an issue at all, other than using {{Trademark}}. "Wouldn't mind" is beside the point, per Commons:Precautionary principle. The issue is whether it is copyrighted. The most likely reason it might not be is that it could be too simple for copyright. Please link a page that shows the logo in question so that someone can work that out. - Jmabel ! talk 15:28, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Thank you, the image in question is here: https://www.tnscbank.com/ It's the logo with the bird and fledglings. Unlikely it's copyrighted. It's trademark as far as I understand Indian law and generally reproducible for purposes such as this. Other examples where logos exist without problem: en:Axis_Bank, en:ICICI_Bank, en:Cosmos_Bank --Eternaltyro (talk) 06:59, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Eternaltyro: Actually, near certain it is copyrighted. It is complex enough to merit copyright, and the style suggests it is no older than the 1960s, so under the Berne Convention it almost certainly was inherently copyrighted at creation. Yes, something like "fair use" is legitimate, but Commons does not accept images on a "fair use" basis: remember that it is our intent to provide images that can be freely reused, altered, etc.
- Wikidata draws its images from Commons, so it won't be a choice there either.
- However, if you need to use it in an article on the English-language Wikipedia, that can be solved entirely within the English-language Wikipedia. See en:Template:Non-free logo and remember to upload in the English-language Wikipedia, not here. - Jmabel ! talk 14:33, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or channel, or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. "Invesor" spelling mistake in multiple places
The category Category:Invesor of Sylvester and Kempe, and the filenames of all the images in it, mis-spells the word "Inversor" as "Invesor". What is the best way to fix this? uploads
--2003:E9:DF25:6000:7133:1FB5:809F:AFBB 15:09, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Should I write just the primary source or the secondary source along with the secondary source?
I was planning to upload an image of Charles Melton for the wiki page of him, which was a stub (definitely needing to be expanded more, i.e. images as long as they are correctly licensed). Here's what I wrote for answering where this digital image of Charles Melton came from:
Getty Images North America (primary source for the URL of Zimbio's Charles Melton image)
Author: Jon Kopaloff
I'm also not exactly sure what license this image should be labeled under? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lil' Jimmy Da Crinja Ninja (talk • contribs) 02:33, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: If I believe so, should I just select: I found it on the internet - I'm not sure? If this is not the right choice, what other options should I use that would be the most appropriate for the image to stay in place? Lil' Jimmy Da Crinja Ninja (talk) 21:52, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
EDIT: I was really honest that this image is not my own work, but if I seem to lie about the image I choose to upload on Wikipedia, will they notice it and have me to remove that image? Lil' Jimmy Da Crinja Ninja (talk) 21:52, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Lil' Jimmy Da Crinja Ninja: It is your responsibility not to upload copyrighted, unlicensed images. As I said, it does not appear to me that the image hsa a free license. Most images that you "just find" are neither public domain nor free-licensed, especially most images from recent decades. Again: if you have no specific reason to think this image is free-licensed, then it is probably not, and you should not be uploading it. Yes, if you did so it will probably be deleted, as it should be. - Jmabel ! talk 04:08, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

How to add "Source of derivative work" for own derivative work.
Hi there, I am new here and I am a bit confused because I uploaded and added my own artwork here but it was tagged as "derivative work". I own the copyright of this content: File:Virtual Auggie Velarde.jpg
I think the person who flagged this believes it is derivative because it's an edit on top of a photo. I took the original photo and I can include that. But after trying to research a way to do so, I really haven't figured it out. How do I add the source for my own derivative work.
For context. I have a photo of me, then I added my art as an edit of that photo. How can I add that information to prevent deletion. I can provide the original photo as well if necessary. Thanks! --AuggieVelarde (talk) 09:08, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a 1.1 GB video times out
I want to upload a replacement for File:12051 Forest Dynamics UHD.webm. I tried listening to the file on different devices, but it seems that the audio was encoded incorrectly, so that I hear the audio as a stroboscopic change of sound and silence each second. I downloaded the original 30 GB file from NASA and converted it with ffmpeg into webm per Help:Converting video#Linux and OS X command line. I got a 1.1 GB video which playback looks and sounds fine. I tried uploading it multiple times, and when I succeed uploading it, the server times out when processing it. The message varies, but I gave up on "Сервер не відповів протягом відведеного на це часу.", which literally means that the server did not reply within the specified time limit. Is it supported at all? I've seen that the file size limit should be 4 GB. But that is for uploading files, not for processing.--Роман Рябенко (talk) 12:45, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

The file itself can be "unflopped". Or it can be added to the "Category:Flopped images" and an additional unflopped version can be uploaded. If there doesn't seem to be a reason for having the flopped image, it is probably better to use the first solution and simply unflop this file. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:39, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

I suspect this is on the wrong site, since we don't really have articles, or marathons, and I have no idea what here would be called a "fountain".]

Submitting an artist Bio

- @Angiel21: This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia.
- I'm guessing from the nature of this request that you are connected to that artist/writer/speaker, so under Wikipedia's rules on conflicts of interest you are not someone who should start an article about them. However, if you think they are notable enough for an article and have been overlooked, you can start at en:Wikipedia:Requested articles, navigate to an appropriate category, and provide good third-party sources someone could use in writing such an article. - Jmabel ! talk 01:21, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

How to enter wikidata for a person not there
I have just uploaded a picture of someone who does not come up when I'm trying to add it on wikidata. I have no idea what to do. The person is John Avis, 19th century, from Virginia. Deisenbe (talk) 15:05, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- You can create an entry in Wikidata or even better an article in Wikipedia. Ruslik (talk) 16:09, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- Could somoeone give me some real help instead of this flippant remark?
- Is it my responsability to create a Wikidata entry every time this happens? Can I enter it here as a red item so it becones a Wikidata item wanted? Where is there an introduction to Wikidata? I'd not like to put something else on my plate. Does creating a Wikipedia article automaticallty generate a Wikidata item?
- Could somoeone give me some real help instead of this flippant remark?
- I've looked at Wikidata for the first time, have no idea what its policies are. It doesn't look any easier than the Commons does to anyone looking at it for the first time. Deisenbe (talk) 07:55, 20 April 2021 (UTC) 07:55, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Deisenbe: you ask, "Is it my respons[i]bility to create a Wikidata entry every time this happens?" Not really. But, just like an article, there just won't be one until someone creates it, and if you know the topic you are a fair candidate to do it. None of this is "automatic". It is done by humans (and, occasionally, as with Wikipedia or here, by a bot where there is an external database to be scraped).
- You seem to be both asking questions about how to do it and saying you don't want to take it on. If you have some interest in taking it on, I'll gladly help, but I'm not going to spend a bunch of time writing something up for you just to say that you really don't care. Are you interested or not?
- As for red item: sure, I guess, but better not to reference Wikidata if there is nothing relevant there. - Jmabel ! talk 14:06, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- I don't know how complicated doing it is, so I don't know how much I'm interested. If it's simple then I'll do it. Am I the only one that could benefit from such guidance? No one ever had this problem before? Deisenbe (talk) 08:44, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Deisenbe: It's just that the Commons help desk is an odd place for an introduction to Wikidata. Are you familiar with wikidata:Wikidata:Tours? If so, have you looked at it at all? I believe the very first tour there explains how to make a new Wikidata item. - Jmabel ! talk 15:39, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Renaming university and college categories following a name change
Hi, I requested an update to the category for Piedmont College, Georgia, to Piedmont University at Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/04/Category:Piedmont College, following a name change this month and updating the en Wikipedia category to en:Category:Piedmont University. E4024 suggested that Commons "may prefer to continue using the old name for a while" so I would like some advice on if and when college categories should be renamed. Another example is Category:University of Maryland University College, where the college was renamed as University of Maryland Global Campus in April 2019 and the en Wikipedia category is en:Category:University of Maryland Global Campus. I asked this on the administrators' notice board, but did not get an answer. TSventon (talk) 08:59, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- Because that board is for issues requiring admin intervention. E4024 (talk) 13:36, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- E4024 can you suggest how long Commons would want to wait after a college changes its name. Another example is Category:University Campus Suffolk, where the campus was renamed as University of Suffolk in 2016 and the en Wikipedia category is en:Category:University of Suffolk. TSventon (talk) 14:21, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Replace Outdated Logo on Page?
Hi. This page has an outdated logo for our company: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Reelz_Channel_Logo.png
It appears to have been added 7 years ago and clients still use it because they find it on Wikipedia. How can I jump in and replace the logo with our current one?
Thank you,

- Hi, and welcome. Thank you for all the movies and other content. Please license your new logo on your official website or social media, or send permission via OTRS before uploading and then use {{subst:OP}}. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, your new logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia with a new name in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:31, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Pranga13: I would guess that this was about en:Pranga on the English-language Wikipedia (here on Wikimedia Commons, we don't have articles of this sort), except that was deleted five years ago. There is also a discussion currently about en:Draft:Pranga, proposing to delete that. That discussion is at en:Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Pranga; you haven't responded there. en:Pranga was deleted by User:Just Chilling who said that the article contained "[n]o credible indication of importance." In any case, you'd have to take that up on the English-language Wikipedia, but I can tell you that you will get nowhere "reporting" people who propose deletion of something that is of at best borderline notability. The draft in question has no sources indicated. If you are both User:Pranga13 and User:Prangamania13, that smacks of sock-puppeting. And I suggest you read the English-language Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 06:41, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. can i add missing category Stella Elmendorf Tylor on File:Stella Elmendorf Tylor (3076526449).jpg
the file is used on both en and arz wikis. is it ok to add missing category name? if yes, what is the best way? Gi vi an (talk) 14:14, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
- Sure. On the file page, you'll just put [[Category:Stella Elmendorf Tylor]]; then at Category:Stella Elmendorf Tylor you will use the same notation to add the parent categories of that category. Then, ideally, at Stella Elmendorf Tylor (Q7607060) on Wikidata, you can add this as a Commons category, which will link the Commons category to the Wikipedia article. If that last part seems too hard (no surprise), come back here with that and I'll do that for you. - Jmabel ! talk 15:02, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Secondary would be the question where in the various options to properly put this issue. Categorization of galleries
Hello, considering it seems to have a lack of consensus on how a gallery page should be categorized or not, I'm therefore asking for more opinions than the only one I've got on my own talk page.
One of the examples found at Commons:Galleries, Mohandas K. Gandhi, is categorized under Mohandas K. Gandhi, Gallery pages of activists, Gallery pages of India and 20th century gallery pages, but also under 1869 births, 1948 deaths, Gandhi (surname) and Mohandas (given name) like its corresponding category, which also uses a Wikidata Infobox template and the same auto-generated categories.
It therefore seems to me that Commons:OVERCAT applies here (see [11], [12], [13]). I even noticed removals of infoboxes from gallery pages for this reason. Note that there are already specific categories and templates (including Template:Infobox gallery pages about people) for galleries. Commons:Galleries only says that "every gallery should be categorized. Add the gallery to the category with the same name, or if there is none, to relevant categories", but doesn't explain if infoboxes should be used or not, or if overcategorization applies or not.
In all cases, I think Commons:Galleries should be edited to give more informations about how categorization exactly works for gallery pages. Synthwave.94 (talk) 22:09, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- Definitely skip the ones that are on the main corresponding category. - Jmabel ! talk 13:41, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: In this case, should I remove the Wikidata Infobox template and change it with other templates such as Infobox gallery pages about people (as used on gallery pages such as Rembrandt) ? Synthwave.94 (talk) 03:44, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- I don't know about any need to remove the Wikidata Infobox template. Does the Wikidata item know about the gallery page yet? - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: As stated on Template:Wikidata Infobox, the template automatically add categories such as birth/death dates, given names or surnames, no matter if it's included in a category or a gallery page. For example, you can see that Mohandas K. Gandhi and its corresponding category, which both use the template, are included under 1869 births, 1948 deaths, Gandhi (surname) and Mohandas (given name). You can also notice that 50 gallery pages use Template:Infobox gallery pages about people instead, while Template:Infobox artist can be found on more than 850 gallery pages. You can see that gallery pages such as Rembrandt, Eugène Delacroix, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex or Avril Lavigne don't use the Wikidata Infobox template, but one of the other two templates. As a result, I think Template:Infobox gallery pages about people and Template:Infobox artist shoud be used instead of Template:Wikidata Infobox in gallery pages. Synthwave.94 (talk) 20:02, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- I see. You're saying to avoid the side effect of categorizing, rather than to avoid the display of the Infobox? Makes sense. Should probably be documented as part of the documentation of the respective templates. - Jmabel ! talk 20:12, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: It would also makes sense to clarify Commons:Galleries, especially what templates should be used or avoided and to mention COM:OVERCAT. I'm also Pinging @Minerva97, who created Template:Infobox gallery pages about people and removed Template:Wikidata Infobox from several gallery pages. Synthwave.94 (talk) 21:52, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: @Synthwave.94: Hello guys! I created "Template:Infobox gallery pages about people" exactly because of the difficulty with the categories and also because "Commons:Galleries" is not clear. In my opinion we should have a template just for galleries. It might be a good idea to merge Template:Infobox artist and Template:Infobox gallery pages about people. Minerva97 (talk) 22:17, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Minerva97: Thanks for the answer ! I don't know how the two templates can be merged, but Template:Infobox artist can also be changed manually and then deleted (or redirected to Template:Infobox gallery pages about people). I already made a test here and it seems to work. Synthwave.94 (talk) 12:51, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
- Just use "autocat=no" to tell the Wikidata Infobox not to include the categories. Templates like Template:Infobox gallery pages about people should be removed and deleted, since they only display content in one language. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:18, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel: If you think the use of manual templates is deprecated then feel free to edit my changes at Commons:Galleries regarding the use of infoboxes in gallery pages. I'm also Pinging @Minerva97 to let her know about the issue. Synthwave.94 (talk) 13:19, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Done - basically a rewrite of points 6 and 7 to bring them up to date. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:22, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

copyright violation
hello, I uploaded a picture of Eyal Gamliel that Eyal sent me himself and said that I could upload it to his page on Wikipedia. Is it forbidden? thanks,
mor. (Morklugman (talk) 12:17, 27 April 2021 (UTC))
- @Morklugman: Copyright would normally belong to the photographer, not the subject of the photo, so the subject's permission is not normally relevant.
- Similarly, passing permission informally to you is not verifiable.
- We need a sufficiently free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA-4.0) from the owner of the copyright (typically the photographer).
- Usually the simplest way to do that when the photographer is not a participant in Commons is for the photographer to post the image with license stated explicitly on a site or page clearly under control of that photographer (e.g. their own site, their Flickr account, etc.)
- There is also a more general but more cumbersome approach laid out at COM:OTRS.
Reusing CCO 1.0 Content
Hello, I am an amateur musician, and recently with another artist, we released an album, the picture on the album cover of which, is an image available with the CC0 1.0 Universal licence (one from the Metropolitan Museum collection). I would like to ask, will using such a file make our content (the music) have the same licence too, like for example, become CC0? Or it doesn't have to do with it? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 5.55.79.117 (talk) 14:26, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- en:CC0 is equivalent of public domain. Ruslik (talk) 17:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Your content with an CC0 image can use any licence you want, even commercial use. You are not even obliged to say where the image came from.--Snaevar (talk) 11:46, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Derivative work attribution
I have a drawing I want to upload that was done by a colleague of mine and then modified by me. The colleague gave permission to use it and modify it and the original file is under the CC BY license but it is not posted on Wikimedia Commons yet. When it comes to authors, should I list both their name and mine? Also, is there a way to specify who did what? For example, my colleague did the drawing and I did the labelling? And if so, where? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chiara Mazzasette (talk • contribs) 23:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Chiara Mazzasette: The "author" section of {{Information}} can be as elaborate as it needs to be.
- If the colleague has the image clearly labeled as CC-BY somewhere online (needn't be here on Commons) or in a book, etc., reference that as a source from which this work derives, and that will be fine. If not, and if they can't make it so, then you'll need them to go through the email-based process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 07:18, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

File:Keith Francis 1976 BC Relays.jpg,
Hello Wikipedia professional. This photograph has been published by the author on his Flickr site as Public domain. I have provided the link information to the Flickr site to show this and I personally checked with the author and he verified that the "public Domain" tag is accurate for that photograph. I hope this fulfills the requirements for publication. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by PMCALIFNH (talk • contribs) 14:22, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

- @PMCALIFNH: It would seem to be on the Flickr page of the subject of the photo, not the photographer. What is his basis to say this is public domain? - Jmabel ! talk 15:06, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
- (ec) @PMCALIFNH: Hi, and welcome. Jack McDonald was obviously not the photographer, as he is pictured running in the photo on Flickr. What can you tell us about the name and lifetime of the actual photographer and the dates and countries of photography and publication? Also, please show proof it was published in the US without a claim of copyright before 1979, and see COM:L and COM:SIGN. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:13, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello folks and thanks for your feedback. I think there must be something wrong with my link or how I filled out the information so bear with me....
- 1 Jack McDonald is not in the picture, he was a team-mate of Keith Francis, and he took the picture. You couldn't have come to this conclusion yourself, so I must have made an error in the upload fields
- 2 the link provided (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcdonaldmorgan/48910682471/in/photolist-2kBDpsy-2hw52SP-2i3KboK-2idMdMz-2deaUzh) gives the date of April of 1976, so did I maybe give an errant link?
- 3 the link provided (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcdonaldmorgan/48910682471/in/photolist-2kBDpsy-2hw52SP-2i3KboK-2idMdMz-2deaUzh) clearly indicates "public domain" from the photographer. Again I must have put-in a link that isn't getting you to the right page?
I think I must be missing something? If you can direct me to where I listed this incorrect information, I can correct it. I think I must have somehow mis-entered something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PMCALIFNH (talk • contribs) 11:02, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- @PMCALIFNH: Makes more sense now. But this looks like it comes from a book, rather than directly from the photographer. Do we have any basis to know that the owner of Flickr account https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcdonaldmorgan really is the photographer? It is clear that he does not upload only his own photos: see for example https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcdonaldmorgan/48910682536/in/dateposted/, https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcdonaldmorgan/48910155378/in/dateposted/. Also: even if it is his own photo, what is the basis for it being in the Public Domain? Just asserting that doesn't make it so. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
These are great questions. You can see that Jack uploads mostly wildlife photos that he takes in salt estuaries. They are pretty striking. I contacted him via Flickr Email and he tells me that these are in fact his photos of Keith Francis. He was on the BC track team, and he was younger than Keith, but he knew at the time that Keith was something special. He told me there was no better teammate than Keith and he was happy to see a Wikipedia entry on him. He took many pictures of Keith in the 1975 and 1976 time frame and makes them available to everyone through his flickr account. He has in fact placed them in the public domain and noted to me that he in fact designated the Keith Francis photos specifically this way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PMCALIFNH (talk • contribs) 20:54, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- @PMCALIFNH: I don't doubt you, but for Commons, just the assertion "placed them in the public domain" is problematic. Normally, I'd suggest changing the license on Flickr to CC-0 (an active statement that he is placing this photo in the public domain, rather than the present assertion that it is in the public domain), but we are still left with the fact that this came from some third-party publication and it's a little hard to be sure he really took the picture. Usually in this sort of case we ask people to go through the COM:OTRS process, and I really think it would be a good idea here for him to send the OTRS team an email overtly stating that he took the photo and has dedicated it to the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 02:27, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
I understand. When I exchanged Emails with him he flatly refused the Email route even though I gave him the Email address and template to send it to. I might be able to get him to change the designation to CC-0 on that picture, so I can go that route. He is the photographer posting it on his own account/site on Flickr, along with I believe three other photos he took during that meet, and I think that's pretty much the objective evidence we need. It was taken at the BC relays in April of 1976 for sure. I am a bit puzzled that because it is plainly posted on his site with the tag of "Public Domain" makes it "an assertion" where changing the designation with a single click to "CC-0" somehow doesn't make it an assertion any longer, but I will surely ask him to do this (and hope he does it for us). Thanks for your understanding - fingers crossed — Preceding unsigned comment added by PMCALIFNH (talk • contribs) 11:49, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- @PMCALIFNH: There's been a lot of discussion of the difference between Flickr's CC-0 tag and their PD tag. Basically, the former is performative; the latter is not. - Jmabel ! talk 06:56, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
I contacted the photographer and he changed it to "Public Domain CC0". Basically he wants to do anything to preserve the memory of his team mate Ketih. We should be good now... Thanks for the pointers - will make sure the next time that PUBLIC DOMAIN designation alone off of Flickr is not the right designation by the photographer --PMCALIFNH (talk) 19:46, 29 April 2021 (UTC) (author)--PMCALIFNH (talk) 19:47, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
What is sufficient source information on component parts of a derivative work?
The video File:Ocean_Today_-_Tsunami_Strike_Japan_-_Pt1_Destruction.webm clearly includes news footage from various networks and has been flagged as a derivative work with insufficient source information.
However, the source website is operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and "information presented on this website is considered public information and may be distributed or copied." – Disclaimer Further, "except where noted, all material on the site resides in the public domain and can be freely distributed." (emphasis mine) – Website Editorial Policy.
Given that no copyright has been mentioned on either the webpage containing the media nor the media itself (credits are there, but no claims of copyright), is it fair to say this work is in the public domain? Or do I need to dig deeper? – Subsider34 (talk) 04:52, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Convenience link: File:Ocean_Today_-_Tsunami_Strike_Japan_-_Pt1_Destruction.webm. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Subsider34: The credits refer to "Footage Courtesy Of: Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Japan Coast Guard, TV Asahi Corporation, RT TV". I see no indication that any of those organizations waived their copyrights. Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 07:04, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Subsider34: That's a good question. The page "/disclaimer" looks too vague to be useful. The section "Website Editorial Policy" of the page "/aboutsite" seems precise : "Materials posted on this site are reviewed by NOS professional staff prior to publishing. [...] Except where noted, all material on the site resides in the public domain [...]. Use of appropriate video, photo and image credits is requested." That sounds like they are saying that they know what they are doing and that, indeed, all material on the site, from whatever source, has been copyright-cleared by their professionals and is in the public domain except where noted. And given that apparently there is no note about this video that would exclude any part of it from that public domain statement, a normal good faith reader could reasonably conclude that it implies that the external organizations waived their copyrights on the segments. However, there is yet another statement, in the section "Frequently Asked Questions" of the page "/about" [14], which says : "Please do not take the videos and sell them [...], and please do not alter, transform, or build upon this work, but use it in its entirety [...]." The word "please" may make it be interpreted as a request not contradicting the public domain statement, but that sounds like a surprising and unusual request if the material is the public domain. In the end, the multiplicity of their statements scattered in various places on the site, and having to guess what they imply, makes it difficult to interpret what the situation is. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:31, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: As the statement on the "/about" page applies broadly to "images, videos, text or other site information", including all federal government-produced content that is explicitly in the public domain, I have to assume it is a request. Even allowing for mental gymnastics, I can't think of any other means of having it comply with either U.S. Law or their Website Editorial Policy. Especially when said policy makes it explicit that credits are a request. – Subsider34 (talk) 05:33, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- About the "Website Editorial Policy", I cautiously observe that a reader "could reasonably conclude that it implies" that the organizations waived their copyrights, but "having to guess what they imply, makes it difficult to interpret what the situation is". It's always difficult to rely solely on the words of one organization to try to indirectly infer the actual decisions of other organizations. Commons understandably feels unsafe with implicit things. It would be safer if there was a confirmation by one of the other organizations, or a communication from oceantoday confirming that it is correct to interpret their "Website Editorial Policy" as meaning that the other organizations released their segments in the public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:46, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- Fair. I've reached out to Ocean Today to see if they will clarify but haven't heard back yet. Probably not a high priority for them, but they did say they were open to questions about content from the public. – Subsider34 (talk) 02:34, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Jmabel: As mentioned in my OP and in Asclepias's post above, the website itself contains language expressly declaring that everything hosted on it is in the public domain unless noted otherwise. – Subsider34 (talk) 05:33, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- Sure. But I for one don't trust mere assertion that something is public domain with no rationale why it should be, and where the nature of the source makes it look very unlikely. Why would RT or NHK place their materials in the public domain? - Jmabel ! talk 13:37, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi, can't i request a file renaming if i'm not a registered user?
I'd rather not sign up if all i need to do is to report an error in file description. This file is wrongly attributed, it should be renamed and redescribed to show it represents this artwork, i'm not sure how exactly this should be done. — 188.123.231.23 09:42, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- Normally I'd say to use {{Rename}}, but in this case just tell me here what you think the name should be, since my Russian is minimal. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- The ‘XIX век’ = ‘19th century’ part is plain confising while ‘Серпухов’ = ‘Serpukhov’ is kinda right, but if it’s ok to rename it anyway, and as the original uploader is long inactive, please use some international name, i’m not aware of what is considered a good file name here. It's a watercolor / pencil painting by en:Apollinary Vasnetsov called ‘Old Serpukhov’, representing the ~17th century rather than the 19th. Year it was painted must be 1920 as stated in the other file’s description but i can’t check it. — 188.123.231.23 19:59, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- Again: I don't have much Russian. If you want me to change the name, I need to know what to change it to (or a Russian-speaker needs to take over here). I can't name it "The 'Серпухов' = 'Serpukhov' is kinda right" etc. My technical ability to take the action does not magically give me the ability to know what is to be done. - Jmabel ! talk 13:42, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

OpenStreetMaps / arcGIS experimentation
Howdy,
I am seeking to learn how to upload Data:[Filename].map files to Wikimedia. I am trying to do so to bring a feature I noted on NYC's City Council Wikipedia article where the council districts are dynamic maps, to a similar page.
This article on MediaWiki states
- To create a new map data, go to Wikimedia Commons, and create a new page in the Data namespace with the .map suffix, such as Data:Sandbox/Name/Example.map. Feel free to experiment by creating pages with the Sandbox/<username>/ prefix.
I can't seem to figure out how to do this, though I do have the JSON to paste in.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks much. --LocalWonk (talk) 05:49, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

I just uploaded File:Jefferson Avenue SB past Corinthian Avenue Hatboro PA.jpeg and the same thing just happened! I really am getting annoyed the metadata is not showing up and wanna find a fix so my images have the proper metadata. Is it the end of the world if my images from my phone are uploading to commons and not displaying proper metadata? I really want this problem fixed so everything goes well! Dough4872 15:10, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Dough4872: One thing you might try is downloading the file from Commons (use the "Original file" link below the picture) and then checking if the downloaded version also shows the correct metadata in Photo Investigator. If it does, then we can be fairly certain that the metadata are in the file and the problem is that Commons doesn't yet understand how to extract them. On the other hand if the downloaded picture lacks the metadata then something is editing them out and this is probably a problem that can be fixed at your end. --bjh21 (talk) 19:54, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Bjh21: I should note the photos in my phone are in a .heic format and not the traditional .jpeg format, that might be the cause. Dough4872 20:08, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Went in my phone settings and changed photo format from .heic to .jpeg and that fixed the problem. Thanks for the help! Just the growing pains of getting a new phone. Dough4872 20:22, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

How to reduce the chance of unnecessary false deletions?
Pleas take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:被石頭擋住了.jpg, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Street in Sanchong District 25.jpg, Commons:Deletion requests/File:TW 台灣 Taiwan 台北101觀景台 Taipei City 101 Observatory elevator sign August 2019 IX2 11.jpg. Many such photos have been nominated without further explanation by Solomon203, it is difficult to see how "useless low quality photo" or "useless personal photo" in the photo, but now these have been deleted. Such nominations also directly affect his credibility and ability to testify in future hearings as a user of this community. If we want to increase the growth rate of the number of photos, we will need to reduce the chance of unnecessary false deletions. The only thing I can do is to discuss how to solve the problems we face.--Kai3952 (talk) 17:34, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:臺灣鐵路管理局車票 頭城-花蓮-臺東 20150120.jpg.--Kai3952 (talk) 17:36, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

- No, what we should discuss is how to reduce the chance of unnecessary false deletions, instead of criticizing Solomon203.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:05, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Interpreting terms
Would screencaps of content related to these terms be allowed to be uploaded to commons? Under what license if so? Nixinova (talk) 01:35, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Nixinova: Hi, and welcome. No, sorry, that would not be allowed because of both terms "Coverage of proceedings must not be used for commercial sponsorship or commercial advertising" and "Coverage of proceedings must not be used in a way that is misleading." See also COM:DW. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:08, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: are you sure of that? That seems exactly equivalent to the usual non-copyright restriction caused by personality rights. It doesn't say anything about publishing in a commercially sold work. This is exactly the same as the U.S. law (well, series of court decisions) that says you cannot use someone's photo without perimission in a way that implicitly or explicitly implies endorsement of a product, political candidate, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 14:36, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Similarly, misrepresentation falls under "moral rights" in most countries. Certainly it's a non-copyright restriction. - Jmabel ! talk 14:37, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I see a clear commercial use restriction. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:24, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Template:P ing Nothing here prevents use in a commercially published book, newspaper, etc. It just says that under the blanket license, you can't imply "sponsorship" and you can't use it in advertising. That same restriction would apply, at least in the U.S., to any image that depicts an identifiable individual. - Jmabel ! talk 14:40, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

EXIF
Hola.
- Patrollers are more likely to believe that your uploads of jpg digital photos are your own work when you include Exif or other metadata that indicates the source cameras and other information, so please do not strip that metadata. If the metadata contains private information, please send that via OTRS. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:07, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Pinging @EugeneZelenko as tagger. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:30, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't know Spanish :-( You uploads looks like set of promo photos that may belong not to you, but to other people/companies. EXIF allows to judge about number of cameras/photographers. Anyway, authorship confirmation via Commons:OTRS is needed for promotional materials. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:12, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
A concern
Earlier today I mentioned how some images I uploaded from my new iPhone 12 mini such as File:Adidas Ultra Boost 4 running shoes.jpeg and File:Jefferson Avenue SB past Corinthian Avenue Hatboro PA.jpeg are not coming up with the proper metadata from my phone. I’m getting worried I might not be able to fix this and accept this is what’s gonna happen when I upload images from my new phone. I just wanted to make sure it’s okay to upload images like this. I really need the peace of mind because this is stressing me out real bad. Dough4872 19:28, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Need to change Oriola corporation logo (now two colour old version on wiki), how?
{{Helpme}} with changing Oriola logo. Now old version. How to delete that and update the current one (one color, orange logo)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aakkinen (talk • contribs) 10:21, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Aakkinen: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:54, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: thank you Jeff, it seems that for a non wiki user it might be a bit complicated to upload/replace the new version of Oriola logo. Is it possible just to delete the existing version as it is out dated? KR Aakkinen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aakkinen (talk • contribs) 15:30, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Aakkinen: No, sorry, we don't do that, as "out dated" is not a good reason for deletion, and articles sometimes use old logos for historical purposes.. Where did you get the updated logo? See also COM:SIGN. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:39, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I am an employee of Oriola and hope to provide Wikimedia with the current logo. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.221.47.96 (talk) 16:56, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Aakkinen: Are you authorized to release the current logo with a cc-by-sa-4.0 license? Why can't you string four tildes together? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:05, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Cant upload my own file
I am being blocked from uploading a picture i took myself, im gettimg a "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons" error. I may have used it on a blog years ago. Is this why it thinks its already copyrighted. Anyway, how can i upload the file? Theres no way to prove its mine, except i say it is . Any help would be much appreciated.
Actually cancel that query, i had uploaded it to Wikipedia previously. My apologies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dylanovsky (talk • contribs) 01:16, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Dylanovsky (talk) 01:00, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Dylanovsky: , usually there is a "proceed anyway" option, if not then it might be the metadata of the image, usually this error message is also given to very small images. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:10, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
Upload error
Hi! There is the following error when I'm trying to upload a video I got from YouTube and that is under Creative Commons: "Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file", after writing the description of the file. Auréola (talk) 06:12, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Auréola: , this is because Alphabet (the parent company of YouTube) is actively blocking Wikimedia Commons as it sees it as "bot-archiving" and disallows imports to Wikimedia Commons. This has been discussed several times in the village pump and Alphabet has been contacted. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:09, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
