Could someone please upload the newer version (-2012) over the old one? I see no reason to keep the old one as this name. Maybe it could be archived as -2010 or -2009 though. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:46, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Er staat al een bestand met dezelfde inhoud in de wiki / There is already a file with these contents in the wiki

I tried to upload a file, but the upload supposedly failed. I had the page File:Nicole Thiemann at the Azencross 2012.jpg deleted to upload the file again but it still says "Er staat al een bestand met dezelfde inhoud in de wiki" (my settings are in Dutch but it means "There is already a file with these contents in the wiki") before directing me to the deleted page mentioned above. On this page it says "Er bestaat geen bestand met deze naam, maar u kunt het uploaden" ("There is no file with this name, but you can upload it"). Can someone please tell me what I need to do to upload this file again? I use the Upload Wizard. Answers preferably in English or Dutch please. - FakirNL (talk) 16:53, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Don't use the Upload Wizard. This form isn't going to annoy you with wrong indications of existence (it also needs to be used when only the file extensions differ). darkweasel94 17:43, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
I like the Upload Wizard but the basic upload form didn't bother me with annoying messages indeed. File re-uploaded. :This section was archived on a request by: FakirNL (talk) 07:18, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

A Very Good Photo of Andrew Bujalski

once I organised this photo for wikipedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Bujalski_by_Vanessa_Bertozzi.jpg

i asked the author, she said "yes", also to the special conditions of use in german wikipedia (commercial use allowed), and confirmed that in a comment under her photo in flickr. yesterday she sent me an email and asked me to delete this photo from wikipedia. she didn't give an explanation why. but she deleted her comment with the permission under her photo in order to "not confuse the wikipedia editors". what should i do now? and how?--Alice d25 (talk) 06:15, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable. You should explain this to the author. Ruslik (talk) 09:26, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
In this case though, we don't actually have any evidence that it was ever valid. darkweasel94 09:49, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi, it's Vanessa. I have been asked by Andrew to have the photo taken down. It wasn't actually taken by me, but by my wedding photographer. Please help! user:Vanbertozziuser talk:Vanbertozzi 11:13, 2 September 2013 (ET)
If it wasn't taken by the owner of the Flickr stream, then it was never properly licensed. I've started a speedy deletion for copyvio. Remember, if this is a mistake or we get permission, it can always be undeleted. Liamdavies (talk) 18:03, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Translating an image

File:Europa en 1470 (SO).svg is a map with countries named in Spanish. It is here on Commons, with a public domain license. It is used on English Wikipedia.

I would like to edit it, putting the country names into English. But before I start, I would like some advice. I realise that I should upload my edited version with a new name: is there a standard way of generating the new name? Is there anything else I should keep in mind? Maproom (talk) 14:14, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't think there is a standard naming convention. As for other things to keep in mind, you should link the two versions to each other in the "other versions" field. darkweasel94 14:51, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
& in the "other versions" field, {{Derivative versions}} and {{Derived from}} would probably be clearest. Also, it's generally simplest to use the same licensing (and can get legally tricky if you don't). - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you both for the advice. I've done it now, see File:Europa en 1470 (SO) en.svg . Maproom (talk) 18:10, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

UPLOAD WIZARD more of a dunce

Annoying, had to prefix my initials as a possessive 'FAB's_' to clear this error situation.

Fabartus (talk · contribs) These error messages and 14 or so just like them were produced by the upload wizard 31 August 2013. As of this moment, the javascript or gadget or wizard is apparently fixating on a much too much of a short string length (that is just the beginning few bytes, I infer as a computer professional) to determine the file name is insufficiently unique. OBVIOUSLY the CODE is evaluating wrongly, these names are very long and plenty unique. Same issue occurred last week for Category:Blaschak Coal Company a similar group of long-named rail fanning photos. Made the same prefix fix. Given the descriptive names I've taken time to put up, fixing this would be appreciated, the name lengths really didn't need another six bytes. // FrankB 00:26, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

I believe everything starting with "IMG" is automatically rejected, and in fact that's good because if you upload something with a filename like "IMG 3466.jpg", you probably just forgot to fill in the name field. It helps to put the IMG part at the end, e.g. File:Wagramer Str-2013-08-15-IMG 3466.jpg. darkweasel94 01:02, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Major problems with uploading over the weekend

I have tried to upload about 50 photos over the weekend but only half succeeded. Nothing happens to the others. I have changed the size and title of the files but none of them have been uploaded. I have never had these problems before. Have there been problems on the servers over the weekend?Lesula (talk) 05:16, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

I know there was an issue from 00:00, 30 August 2013‎ till 00:30, 30 August 2013‎ but "only" from Europe, possibly Asia and Africa. -- Rillke(q?) 17:15, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Its highly unlikely that this is a photograph of w:Pemulwuy who died in 1802. Uploader hasn't given a source. Should this be deleted or simply renamed to something descriptive? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moondyne (talk • contribs) 14:12, 1 September 2013‎ (UTC)

It's used here: [1], also without source, and although the article is about Pemulwuy, the caption just reads "18th century warrior". I'll add the link to the file, but naming is incorrect. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:51, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

How to correct a typo. in an existing file name?

Hello, How do I arrange for a typo. in an existing file name to be corrected? I am not an administrator or file mover. The photo is in the Grant Denyer article.

As you can see the word 'presenting' is spelled persenting. Another editor has corrected the spelling in the host article's infobox but the photo now doesn't display because of the typo. I would appreciate your assistance please. Melbourne3163 (talk) 20:11, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Posting pictures of Bhutan.

I want to post pictures taken in Bhutan. How do i do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kawashogun (talk • contribs) 11:46, 3 September 2013‎ (UTC)

  • First, are you the person who took the pictures? Because you can't post pictures here if someone else holds the rights to them and hasn't released them.
  • Second, you post pictures taken in Bhutan exactly like you post any other pictures. For a beginner, it is probably easiest to start at Commons:Upload. - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Replaced image problem

I uploaded and than replaced the image File:LauraMvula_cropped.jpg with a slightly different cropped version. While the thumbnail looks like the new replaced image version, the actual image still displays like the original image but with the (now distorted) proportion of the new replaced image (also on the WP article page). Not sure what the problem is, but maybe an admin can help. Thanks! Optimale (talk) 14:56, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Vielen Dank!

Best regards Christoph — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 178.115.128.50 (talk)

I'd like to change the license on a photo from Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported to Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported

How do I do that? The image is already used on a wikipedia page, so I don't exactly want to delete it, unless I can replace it right away. How long does speedy delete take? Socialresearch (talk) 04:35, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

You can't revoke the cc-by-sa license, but you can just add an additional license to the description page. No deletion necessary. darkweasel94 05:29, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I added in a CCA 3.0 unported, but now there are two licenses. Which one takes priority, which one do people use, how do they know which one to use? Socialresearch (talk) 22:25, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Actually, CC-BY-SA 3.0 can be replaced by CC-BY 3.0 by the author. The 'SA' part is a restriction. Nobody will use a file under CC-BY-SA if it's also available under CC-BY. Jcb (talk) 22:42, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
It's a dual-license, so people can choose which one they want to use, there are no priorities. And yes, Jcb is right in principle, but the CC-BY-SA can serve to document that those who already reused it and included a cc-by-sa URL (not a cc-by URL) didn't violate the license. darkweasel94 05:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Help with photo of Ng Ser Miang

Hello, I'm currently working on behalf of Ng Ser Miang to upload a new photo of himself and have it placed on his Wikipedia article. I've uploaded the photo here, but it doesn't display correctly, despite attempts to reduce both the size and dimensions of the file. Any idea what's happening? I'll be having Mr. Ng send an email soon with permissions information, but would like to make sure the image works correctly before I do. Thanks in advance! ChrisPond (talk) 13:42, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. The server currently seems to be having problems generating thumbnails, as has already been pointed out at the German-language village pump. If you click on the image, you'll see it in full resolution - it has been uploaded successfully, so it's not your fault. darkweasel94 14:00, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Okay, great—thanks for the info! Looks to be working now anyway. Cheers! ChrisPond (talk) 14:28, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm going to go ahead and mark this six-month-old question for archival now. The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness, and it's likely that the problem was caused by one of its many bugs, but there isn't enough information to say for sure. The file format has nothing to do with this problem. Commons accepts PDF for some uploads (and the limitations on the use of the format are not enforced by technical measures).
The "wiki text" option in the Upload Wizard is an advanced option that lets users enter information for cases that do not fit the standard options. As noted, the text must include a copyright tag, which your text does not. Your text looks like our licensing permission boilerplate and should not be included in the file description. Instead, it should be sent in to our permission archive. The wikit text corresponding to Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 and GFDL would be {{CC-by-sa-3.0}}{{GFDL}}. It looks like you went ahead and uploaded File:Modèle écoculturel de John W. Berry.pdf. Not sure why you chose PDF when SVG or PNG would have been more appropriate, but other than that, I don't see a problem with it. (I can't comment on the factual nature of the content, though.) Making a collage

Title says it all. How do I make one? --TheShadowCrow (talk) 00:15, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

  • Could you expand on that question? For example, is this a photocollage or something else? Do you mean something which just has pictures together with everything at right angles or something more complicated? Are you talking about taking images from Commons? Placing them on Commons? Both? Are you asking about technically what tool to use, or asking about licensing, or what? - Jmabel ! talk 15:28, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Collages aren't that hard. File:Ipswich montage 2.jpg is one I did recently with GIMP. I started with the top image and enlarged the canvas bigger. I added the other images and either cropped or scaled them to fit. I then selected and cleared the border areas to make them white. Then I cropped the whole image to shape. Commons:Feeds problem? Catfood problem?

If I go to Commons:Feeds and click on either of the "featured pictures" links, neither works (both links seem to end up in the same place). I get no images, just the text "No files found". If I go to the catfood tool itself and use the example query for featured images, I do get results, but the results appear incomplete. Uploading pictures taken by others acting as employees

There is a garden I know that has pictures of different species from its property. If a person who was working (or volunteering) for the garden took those pictures on duty for the garden, can the director of the garden release the pictures not taken by themselves under a free license here? Thanks. Biosthmors (talk) 17:26, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

  • (You don't say what country; the following should be correct in the U.S., to the best of my knowledge, but I'm not a lawyer. You might get better advice at Commons:Village pump/Copyright.) If they were working & taking the pictures was part of their job, presumably yes (in that this would be work for hire). But a volunteer, who was receiving no compensation, would presumably retain his or her copyrights unless they were explicitly signed over. - Jmabel ! talk 18:52, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

This image [2] came up during discussions at en.Wikipedia, and it occurred to me that there may possibly be a copyright concern. In brief, File:Human displacement map of the world.jpg is based in part on an image found here [3] - dated 2007, and thus clearly still in copyright. The original image is intended to illustrate "a way of highlighting (when compared to maps utilizing population data from earlier centuries) the effects of colonisation as well as migratory trends in the last century" using "'von Luschan's chromatic scale - a method of classifying skin colour". The creator of the upoloaded file seems to have copied the 'skin colour' data onto a new map. Though the creator of the original, Jonathan Hagos, states that he has used census data for the image, it seems to me that there must of necessity have been a great deal of interpretation of such data (not least becaus census data does not normally include skin colouration), and thus it constitutes an original work in itself. I thus wonder what exactly the copyright status of the uploaded copy is - is it a derivative work, and as such possibly in breach of copyright? AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:55, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

  • On further consideration, there is another issue with this image: the 'description' given on the file page omits any mention whatsoever of Hagos's original. I'm not sure what needs to be done regarding this, but it certainly needs rectification if the image is to stay. AndyTheGrump (talk) 15:51, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
    • There may be good reason to acknowledge the original (on the same basis as acknowledging any source), but there is certainly no copyright issue. You can't copyright ideas or data, only their expression. - Jmabel ! talk 03:37, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

I am trying to figure out what the correct copyright code is for File:Walker Evans Boardwalk.jpg an image that came from the Getty Research Institute's Open Content Program. Here is the image on their site, and here is the FAQ for their program, where they state that all images in that program are PD.

Are there copyright restrictions for the Getty's open content images?
No. The first release includes 4,600 images of works of art believed to be in the public domain—in other words, works not protected by copyright under U.S. law. The Getty does not claim copyright in digital images of public domain artworks.

User JuTa flagged the image. When I followed up on the user's talk page, JuTa wrote:

The template {{PD-1923}} does not fit because it made later. {{PD-old}} does not fit because the autor died 1975 which is less then 70 years ago. {{PD-US-no notice}} might fit, but as far as I know some recharch for a copyright note is neccessary to be sure there was realy no such note. You better re-ask on Commons:Help desk other people if and which license template is fitting here. regards. --

The 4,867 images that they released as part of this program were all researched and vetted internally. The GRI is a world renowned research facility, and as such, I would assume their research would suffice. Please advise.--Theredproject (talk) 21:26, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

For files like this uploaded to Flickr by renowned research facilities we have {{Flickr-no known copyright restrictions}}. Maybe something like this could be created for Getty too? --El Grafo (talk) 10:13, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

We would also presumably need to be happy that the images had the correct licenses in their country of origin if they were created/first published outside the US; it's not clear to me that the Getty is asserting that as well. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:44, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Software error?

When I uploaded a file, there is the picture and the green hook, but no sign: Continue. What can I do? --Schnobby (talk) 08:39, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

I already uploaded hundreds of photos, so I don't know what it is. Also, the left side down on the page there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark while uploading and/or later on. I would be very happy if you could help me. Thanks!

--Schnobby (talk) 13:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

project label templates

I created a label for photos related to a class project at Template:Photos donated by Español Básico Spring 2013 based off a template used for a class from last semester, Template:Photos donated by Spring 2013 Medical English However, the old photo still appears on the tag on the photos such as here File:Escuela en la ciudad de México.JPG although the new photo appears in the layout page. You forgot about Template:Photos donated by Spring 2013 Medical English class ITESM CCM/lang and Template:Photos donated by Spring 2013 Medical English/layout. You should create similar templates for Template:Photos donated by Español Básico Spring 2013. Ruslik (talk) 17:13, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Unable to upload music files via Upload Wizard and Commons: Upload

Been trying to upload some music files to Wikimedia Commons via the Upload Wizard and Commons: Upload for the past couple months, but for the most part am being denied. Upload Wizard keeps giving me an Unknown error: Unknown message, while Upload: Commons has been giving me the same server error again and again: PHP fatal error in /usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.22wmf15/extensions/TimedMediaHandler/handlers/OggHandler/PEAR/File_Ogg/File/Ogg/Media.php line 119: Allowed memory size of 183500800 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2018670161 bytes). The files I'm attempting to upload meet Commons criteria; I've been able to upload three similar files in the past. Not sure why it's giving me a hard time now, though. If it matters any, I've attempted to upload via the Sleipnir, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari browsers; my OS is Windows Vista. Any help would be very deeply appreciated. Thank you! Adding DRs to watchlist

I just discovered that when I edit a DR, it doesn't show up on my watchlist, like other edits do. Am I missing something? How do I watch a particular file deletion request after I edit it? --Light show (talk) 04:44, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

In principle, there should be no difference between DRs and other pages, concerning your watchlist. To add a page to your watchlist, click the little star in the tab bar at the top. It should turn blue. Be careful to open the DR itself (for example from the link on the image description page) and not the list of deletion requests (e.g. Commons:Deletion requests/2013/08/28), as edits to the DRs will not be registered on the DR list. --rimshottalk 06:26, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

If you repeatedly do such things even though you've been warned, you may well be blocked, yes. SIMPLE directions for submitting a biography for upload

Just want to submit a biography and image for free open access on Wikipedia. Not a techie. Need SIMPLE step-by-step directions. I am a regular user and regular donor. Can I upload a word file and jpeg? Thanks for everything. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christinedevries (talk • contribs) 17:09, 9 September 2013‎ (UTC)

A JPEG - yes. If you created it yourself, just use the UploadWizard, otherwise we need the copyright holder to give permission to use under a free license. You can't upload Word files here; you can upload PDFs but if it is a biography, you should just add its content to Wikipedia as wikitext, not upload it to Commons. darkweasel94 17:33, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Uploading images of DVD covers from the Internet

What is the procedure for uploading a non-free image of DVD, Videotape, or Blu-Ray with the intention of illustrating a video on a Wikipedia article under the non-free media and fair use rationale under US copyright law?

--Smrgeog (talk) 20:58, 9 September 2013 (UTC)smrgeog

It's not here on Commons, we don't allow fair use here. You may upload that locally e.g. to English-language Wikipedia (en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard) - if you have questions about that, you need to ask at the English-language Wikipedia. darkweasel94 21:15, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Rules vary for the different-language Wikipedias. For the English-language Wikipedia, you must fill out en:Template:Non-free_use_rationale on the file page for the uploaded non-free image. - Jmabel ! talk 23:47, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

How do I upload a replacement image? (Converted jpeg to png)

I have been trying to understand how to replace a jpeg with a (better-looking) png version.

The current file is: Components of the Human Genome.jpg I want to replace it with my edited version (not yet uploaded): Components of the Human Genome.png

The existing image is used in a number of places, and I want my replacement file to be (automatically!) used in those places too. I have read some instructions on how to do this, but I am not understanding how I make sure the file is handled as a replacement rather than a new image. I apologize for being so cognitively challenged. I need very clear, explicit instructions rather than concise descriptions. Dratman (talk) 01:08, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi - one problem is that some upload forms will wrongly say "a file with that name already exists" when only the file extension differs. You can ignore that message. If the upload form you are using does not even allow you to fill in a description when that happens, you have to use the basic upload form, which does not have that problem. I think you cannot automatically replace the file everywhere that it's used, but you can ask at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands to have an admin do that for you. darkweasel94 22:33, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. This is more complicated than I thought. Dratman (talk) 01:08, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
The easiest way would be to convert it to .jpg extension in GIMP or similar. Just open the .png, file export as .jpg, then overwrite the .jpg.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:37, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
The easiest way yes, but not a good idea. Drawings get terribly ugly as JPEGs. darkweasel94 22:50, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Right, that is why I am trying to convert the image from jpeg to png in the first place. It had some visual problems. Dratman (talk) 01:08, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

was soll das alles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raerba (talk • contribs) 12:34, 12 September 2013‎ (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Raerba (talk • contribs)

Uploading album cover for new album article

Hi,

I am creating a new article for the band Silver Sun's new album, "A Lick and a Promise." I have already edited the Silver Sun page to reflect this new release, but as there is no page for the album, I am creating it myself. I'd like the album cover included, as it is on their other album pages, but it doesn't meet the Wikipedia Commons guidelines and I am not a confirmed user.

Please advise.

For the time being, I will include the file name in the page I am creating, in hopes that this will be resolved before the page is approved and goes live.

I've never asked a question here, so I'm not sure how this works. If you need it, my registered email is email address removed for spambot protection.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kishinthunder (talk • contribs)

You can't upload copyrighted nonfree album covers here on Commons, but you can upload them to the English-language Wikipedia if that's where you're writing your article. You should ask on the project where you want to upload it if you have any problems. darkweasel94 15:50, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Multiple resolutions

Hi, is it possible to import multiple resolutions of the same image within a single file page ? Or do I have to import seperately an alternate resolution of the same image and access it with a different file name ? This would be usefull to have better quality when the automatic resizing is not good. Thank you.--Krešo fr (talk) 11:29, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

No, it is not possible to make different thumbnail sizes refer to different binaries as part of a single filename. The thumbnailing process will always use the latest revision of the file. LX (talk, contribs) 16:09, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Additionally, uploading multiple versions of the same file will likely end up with the lower quality/resolution one being deleted (probably per Template:Duplicate. Category Redirect: The Fens

Category:The Fens is redirected to Category:Back Bay Fens.

That seems a bit odd. What do we use for pictures related to en:The Fens?

--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 04:22, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

The Fens category was created with reference to the Boston, MA, park and has only existed as a redirect. There are two choices I can see:
  1. Convert Category:The Fens to a dab, and create a cat for the English Fens at a disambiguated location.
  2. Convert Category:The Fens to the category for the English Fens, giving a hatnote to the park (these appear to be only two concepts referred to as "The Fens").
Either is viable, but note that the bar to disambiguate is a lot lower on Commons than on enwp. That's partially because of what triggered this question: Users may assume <ambiguous topic> refers to their <specific topic> and miscategorise files accordingly. eg If the park was at The Fens instead of redirecting to Back Bay Fens, you might not have realised the categorisation error here and checked that The Fens category was for ... The Fens...--Nilfanion (talk) 09:14, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
That's jolly helpful. You appear to be suggesting I could just go ahead and do it. I would pick the 2nd option, but whilst I have lived among the English Fens for half a century, I don't know anything about the Boston case. You seem to be suggesting that The Fens is a casual nickname for the Boston case? is that right? If it is I'd definitely go for the 2nd one. Thanks for the advice.--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 20:24, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Yes, "the Fens" is a widely used nickname for the Boston park. --Avenue (talk) 03:47, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Possible licensing problem

This is concerning File:FSRR FBQ 01.jpg. The uploader claimed that the photograph was his own work, published under both Creative Commons and GNU, and also claimed that the author is Ferrosur. However, I found the image on the website of CG Railway here. It's the last image linked on the page, titled Train Loading Ferry.--208.105.174.122 00:53, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Found pictures in Google gallery under Koromačno gallery. The photos are a collection of the Koromačno cement factory. The web is "ipd-ssi.hr" which is the "Societa Storica Italiana", "Istrian Historical society". Is this a protected gallery? Some of my pictures are there also so I assume they are free to use. --Jvdobrich (talk) 02:28, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Anything you find on the net you can presume is protected by copyright unless you can prove otherwise. If some of your pictures are there without them following the license you put on them, then you can assume others have likely had their pictures taken too, and they may not have put them under a free license.--Prosfilaes (talk) 10:19, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

A place to save icons collections

Hello, I was wondering if there is a central place to save icons collections or at least a place to talk about them.

There should be at least a place for collecting such links. We can't afford to lose them forever when the creators' website disappear. If we can't make backups here on Wikimedia, then maybe we can save them at Archive.org. Ark25 (talk) 18:50, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

There are ~700 of them at http://code.google.com/p/famfamfam/wiki/Icons . A bot may help upload them. The original license is CC-by-2.5/3.0 viewed at http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/ We could probably make Category:Famfamfam icons from Mark James in Category:Icons to host them all.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:09, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. I think it's a good idea to save them in zip format too. The files are quite small and it's much easier to save a single zip file until someone will have the time to save all of the icons automatically with a robot. I was thinking to create Commons:Icons page but for the moment the links can be gathered at Category talk:Icons. Ark25 (talk) 20:28, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
To upload they would need to match Commons:File types. .Pdf may work if the .zip can be opened as 700 layers in a program like GIMP. Then see if GIMP, or other, can export as a 700 page .pdf. Once a bot uploads them then we can delete the .pdf. Another way would be to upload 200 or more as one image if the .zip or website already has many icons in one image at full scale.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:31, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Maybe it would be a good idea to add .zip format to Commons:File types, just for creating such a repository of free image collections. I have no experience with Archive.org, I will see if I can make an account and archive the collections there. —  Ark25  (talk) 23:57, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

PLoS One image use

Dear All, since journal PLoS One applies the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 2.5) to all its published materials, is it allowed to upload to Commons and use in Wikipedia figures from the PLoS One articles? Shao (talk) 15:46, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

From your link alone, yes, it does seem so, unless there is contradictory information somewhere else or we have evidence that the copyright holder did not actually agree to the license. darkweasel94 16:13, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I wanted to upload this file, which was published in the 40s, but I cannot find if the copyright has been renewed. It´s supposed that Works published with notice or registered in the U.S. from and including 1923 through 1963 are now in the public domain unless the copyright was renewed... So how can I know if the Copyright has been renewed? Thanks. Albertojuanse (talk) 19:53, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

The copyright by Creative Educational Society is probably for the book Visualized curriculum series, Communication (no. 5) by Inez Bates, registered Sept. 16 1940 under number AA 362119 (entry 11331 in the catalog of copyright entries for first half of 1941). The copyright is for text and pictures but I wonder if is really applicable to this 1887 photograph that had to come from somewhere and may well have been published earlier. Anyway, one can look into resources for copyright renewals around 1967 and 1968. I looked and didn't find a renewal for it, but I'm not used to searching those resources. Maybe someone will have better suggestions. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:29, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Asclepias, It is what I thought. I´ll search for the renewals record, but I´m afraid it is in public domain. Anyway I want to be sure. Thanks. Albertojuanse (talk) 22:08, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Drawing of an image a bit similar to one in a book

for example how a volcano "works", to draw a volcano in the program gimp, by looking in a book with an illustration how a volcano looks inside and then use words like "magma chamber" and put the same words in your own illustration - an illustration that is similar in the way that it also is an illustration of how a volcano is "built"Jasmin Ros (talk) 13:11, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

You can do this as long as you do not directly copy the image or its parts. Abstract ideas are not copyrightable, only specific expressions of these ideas. Ruslik (talk) 15:29, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

How to correctly upload a blog-picture posted for public domain (copyright exempted)?

From Toronto8973.

In some pages of Professorsblogg.com the publisher (Prof. Ferrada de Noli) states, "All images/photos in this page are of my private collection, correspond to own materials and/or donations, and I post them here for public domain (copyright exempted)". This is the case of the page http://ferradanoli.wordpress.com/mir-1965-1975/ where in the caption of the image "Bautista van Schouwen, Marcello Ferrada-Noli and Miguel Enríquez Espinosa. Here in February 1961. . ." the author re-states the following message:

"This picture is of my private collection, it corresponds to an own material which was donated to me, and I post it here for public domain (copyright exempted)"

It should be noted that the three persons in the picture are public figures. Bautista van Schouwen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bautista_van_Schouwen) was killed under torture in the aftermath of the Military Coup in Chile 1973, Ferrada-Noli (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcello_Ferrada-Noli) is a survivor of the Prisoners Camp "Quiriquina Island" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiriquina_Island), and Miguel Enríquez (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_Enr%C3%ADquez) died in combat with military forces in 1975.

How shall I do to correctly upload this picture (or others published with similar terms) in Commons, and subsequently in Wikipedia?

I thank you in advance

You contact the author, Mr. Darío Ulloa, you ask him if he wants to release the photo under a free license and, if he accepts, which one, and you ask him to confirm that directly through OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:48, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

There is no deeply technical way to associate them with your account, but if they are your own work, you can do something like what I did with File:Aerial - Auburn, WA - Northern part of SE Green Valley Rd 01 - white balanced (9796469855).jpg. You can look at the history of that and see what the bot did vs. what I did. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

File:JosephSmithTranslating.jpg

As part of an en:WP featured article candidate review (en:Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Joseph Smith/archive1) I'm trying to fix issues with images found here on commons that were brought up there. I've been able to take care of several, but am not sure if what I've done on File:JosephSmithTranslating.jpg is correct from a Commons standpoint. User:John Foxe said that he commissioned the work from an anonymous relative, and I believe his statement on this to be true, but I'm not sure if there is anything else that can or should be done here besids the clarifications I have made. The image is used in several en:WP articles, and is the only one of it's kind currently available to illustrate a particular set of descriptions in these articles, so it is a useful image. -- 208.81.184.4 18:11, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

According to File talk:JosephSmithTranslating.jpg the uploader commissioned the work and owns the copyright. I think we can assume good faith that the license is valid in this case. The upload to commons was the first publishing and it seems it was created specifically for the projects. We have no 'substantial' doubt so there should be no reason not to continue hosting it.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:36, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Great, thank you! It'd be a pain to loose the image, since it is not easily replaced. -- 208.81.184.4 00:49, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Uploading images for a Wikipedia written about an Independent Record Label.

I work for Bullet Tooth Records and I want to add various images including band/artist pictures from photo shoots and also the band logos for each artist/group under contract with the company. Will I run into problems with proving that I do in fact have the permission to upload these images or can I proceed to upload these images with no further complications? Please let me know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mspanarkel (talk • contribs)

If you want to prove that you are really representing the company, you need to follow instructions on Commons:OTRS. However you should take into account that images must released under an appropriate license, most often under CC-BY-SA or CC-BY. Ruslik (talk) 18:56, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
One possibility might be to have an officer in a position of authority at BTR send an e-mail, from an address verifiably associated to BTR, through OTRS, stating in their own words, something to the effect that 1) BTR fully and irrevocably authorizes the actions that will be performed and the licensing that will be offered in the name of BTR through the account "Mspanarkel" and 2) BTR owns (or holds) the copyrights to the materials uploaded in its name through that account. (If the copyrights are held by other people, then it is those other people who should send their permissions through OTRS.) Of course, BTR may specify in their message a specific license to be offered, if they don't want to delegate that choice to you. You should probably consult in advance directly with the people of the OTRS team at the OTRS/Noticeboard and ask if they have requirements or suggestions about the procedure and wording. This answer assumes that you are already familiar with the basic principles of Wikimedia and with the licensing policy. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:45, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Category Redirect

Hello, is there a category redirect template that places the redirected page name back in the new page name, similar to the combination "{{category redirect|Louise Hislop Investment Property Building | reason=common name redirect to historic name}} #REDIRECT [[Category:Louise Hislop Investment Property Building]]" for Category:Mr. Formal Building? Without the #redirect, the "Mr. Formal Building" doesn't show up on the "Louise Hislop" category page. Also, is there a way to have some control over the "Subcategory" section where it could be renamed, "Common Name" in this example? Visitor7 (talk) 20:05, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Your question is a good one, and I didn't present it very well above. Suppose you were working on photos of the Reliant Astrodome and noticed some images of the Houston Astrodome and the Houston Astros Stadium in the pile. How could you redirect Category:Houston Astrodome to Category:Reliant Astrodome and still preserve the reference to Houston Astrodome on the Reliant Astrodome page? This kind of redirect would assure anyone who navigated to the Reliant Astrodome category page that the stadium is referenced by a set of other names, and each of the listed names redirect to Category:Reliant Astrodome.
My project was more about a National Register historic district where the historic names of the buildings would be the categories where common names or slang names would be redirected, and a search would return not only the historic name and images, but all of the other names used to denote the building when showing the media in the category. This is partially accomplished by the hashREDIRECT, but then the heading "Subcategory" is returned, when a more descriptive heading would be "The Building Goes By These Other Names Also." Does that sort of template exist? Visitor7 (talk) 23:40, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

The original image is in landscape mode, with rotation info in EXIF: Rotate 90° clockwise. MediaWiki image scaler creates thumbnail images based on EXIF info (see Commons:Rotation). How the full resolution image displays depends on the program used to view it; most browsers default on ignoring EXIF rotation and may display it incorrectly. The image itself is fine. Updating metadata... any onwiki way?

What's the easiest way to update metadata? For instance, one of my recently uploaded images File:Giada de Laurentiis 22 Sep 2013 National Book Festival.jpg has its date and time of data generation off by an hour (a daylight savings time effect). I know how to edit metadata on my computer. I could re-upload the file with the corrected metadata. But I'm curious if there's an on-wiki way of doing this that's less cumbersome and annoying, some sort of tool. Jason Quinn (talk) 22:57, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Map and photo from city report on the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct

I would like to upload a map and some old photos from a rare book that was only published once in 1971 by the City of Los Angeles. It has no copyright notice.

The book is a report on the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The book consists of maps and photos describing the construction of the project.

Under what criteria do I upload it under? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dcoffida (talk • contribs) 23:56, 28 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Probably not allowed here. Fair use license might work on en-wiki. No (c) notice doesn't mean it is public domain. You'll have to do some more research: Who is the author of the map / photo and who owns the copyright. Or has the report been released into the public domain? When and by whom? It wasn't a Federal project I assume? That could make things easier. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:57, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
  • Hedwig, I believe US publication in 1971 (before the U.S. signed the Berne Convention) without copyright notice does mean public domain. Do you have any reason to believe otherwise? - Jmabel ! talk 03:04, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
That would be under PD-US-no notice. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:00, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dr Murali Mohan Gurram, as I was dealing a bit with your images already uploaded, let me try an answer: You can use the standard upload mechanism as you did (?), but skip monument and WLM related categories & templates:
{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013|at}}[[Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Austria]]
[[Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Austria needing check]]
[[Category:Uploaded via Campaign:wlm-at]]
(you must have copied this from somewhere, right?).
Nevertheless all your images should have proper description and proper categorization anyhow. See Commons:First_steps/Quality_and_description#Good_file_descriptions and Commons:Categories. This is mainly your responsibility as the uploader. Please see also COM:SCOPE and avoid uploading images showing you in the foreground and the object of interest (the building) in the background. And an image of a monument is an image of a monument, so somebody will have to do the work and assign the needed information. Remember, Commons is for encyclopaedic purposes. Please understand, that the date given with the images is not the date the image was uploaded, but the date it was taken (again for encyclopaedic value). regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 06:31, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
PS: If you don't want to take part in the WLM 2013 competition, you can upload your images anytime later, thus you will get more time to care for encyclopaedic value. regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 06:42, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

I currently have an article on Wikipedia undergoing a Good Article review and a question has arisen over the copyright licence of the image File:Invalids' walk, Bournemouth, Dorset, England, 1890s.jpg. See here [[6]]. Is it acceptable for me to change the licence myself and if so, is it as simple as clicking edit and adding {{PD-1923}}. Thanks--Ykraps (talk) 16:01, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Seems fairly uncontroversial. You might want to bring it up at Commons:Village pump/Copyright just to be sure. LX (talk, contribs) 16:09, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
