Hello! May I request you to make a map in which (1) "Manipur" is in the darkest colour, (2) Assam and Tripura states in a lighter colour, (3) remaining "Northeast Indian states" in the little lighter colour, (4) Bangladesh's Sylhet division (not to be confused with Sylhet district) and the Sagaing region of Myanmar in a lighter colour, (5) the Mandalay region and the Yangon region, File:Ayeyarwady Region in Myanmar.svg, File:Bago Region in Myanmar.svg, File:Shan State in Myanmar.svg & File:Kachin State in Myanmar.svg in a little lighter colour, which is for the regions where Meitei language is spoken with respect to concentration of population? Fortunately, the said portions of areas in the 3 neighboring countries are demarcated properly in various svg maps available in the Commons. --Haoreima (talk) 16:09, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

A comprehensive geographical map that shows both 1 Line and 2 Line with all stations of the Seattle light rail network Link light rail, including dashed lines under construction of both 1 Line and 2 Line with all stations, which can later be edited on, once they open to service in 2024 or 2025. Both lines should be colored differently. Currently, there is no detailed map that shows both lines. There are only maps which show 1 Line and 2 Line, separately.

The entire Link light rail network, including the lines under construction, are shown in detail in this website: https://www.urbanrail.net/am/seat/seattle.htm --Multituberculata (talk) 08:28, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

    Request
I'd like to request some changes to the above map depicting countries visited throughout the Indiana Jones film franchise. Despite one of my previous requests regarding this map, I now think that the green (currently signifying countries visited in Temple of Doom) and the purple (currently signifying countries visited in Dial of Destiny) on this map should be swapped around. As in hindsight, I think green would contrast better with the other colours in any of the striped nations, particularly those in Europe. Which means:
    1) Both China and India should be changed to purple.
    2) France, Morocco and the United Kingdom should all be changed to green.
    3) Italy should be changed to blue and green stripes.
    4) The purple stripes on the United States should be changed to green ones.
And a few other changes I'd ask for:
    5) Greece should be changed to red and green stripes (since another User has helpfully pointed out that the climax of Raiders of the Lost Ark happens on a Greek island).
    6) Portugal should be changed to blue, due to one of the early scenes of Last Crusade taking place at the "Portuguese Coast" in 1938.
    7) Taiwan should be changed back to grey, as it was on the first two versions of this file.
Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:54, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
In this map, Greece needs to be colored in both red and violet stripes, because a part of the first Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark (for which the color red is used), is set on an unnamed Greek island in the Aegean Sea, just north of Crete, where the Ark is opened. --Multituberculata (talk) 19:54, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

I have an extremely large (235 mb) svg file of Canada's census divisions. I downloaded the shapefile from [2] (it's freely licensed) and converted it to SVG. I can't simplify the paths on Inkscape without messing up the internal borders. What should I do to be able to upload it to Commons? --Kingofthedead (talk) 06:19, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
    Graphist opinion(s)
@Kingofthedead: I assume that you're referring to the "census division" from the "Administrative boundaries". What do you mean by "messing up the borders"? How much simplification are you after? Is the map going to be shown by itself or as part of another bigger map with which it needs to align? M.Bitton (talk) 12:34, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
@M.Bitton: I downloaded the "census divisions" shapefile from Administrative boundaries. I then converted it to svg. By "messing up the borders" I mean the internal borders become too simple, leaving white space in between. In reality I only want the extremely, unnecessarily detailed coasts which have a lot of nodes to be reduced. This is what it looks like when I use the "simplify" feature on Inkscape:

The purpose of uploading this map is to have a high-quality SVG file of all census divisions of Canada which includes all of Canada, similar to File:Blank USA map with counties.svg. Kingofthedead (talk) 05:03, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

I think the colours for "Legal for medical use and decriminalized" and "Decriminalized" are quite similar and could lead to confusion, especially on small screens like mobiles and for people with sight and colour blindness and similar such issues. Combine two images to provide a third joint map

The original book had these two maps on separate pages but they should line up top and bottom to produce a decent single map with the name File:Preliminary Map of Eastern Turkistan.jpg and the same metadata as the others apart from removing the "top" or "bottom" bit in the description and interlinking the files in the gallery section. Ideally, they should be combined without reducing the size or detail. I think everything should line up and overlap perfectly but it's possible one might need to be adjusted to match the proportions of the other scan to allow a clean overlay. Low priority but should be fairly fast and produce a good piece of work.-- — LlywelynII 18:43, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

    --Timeshifter (talk) 19:14, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Timeshifter. I am not sure to directly help here but I would like to share some thoughts related to your request:
    • I found that for many users editing a "simple" text file such as svg is not so obvious. For this reason I think it will be nice to have a graphical interface to do so. For this reason I started working on a tool like this one. The interface is not very good but it has some nice features to help editing maps. I can upload more maps if needed.
    • Few years ago I made a proposal to seaparate the css files from the svg. In fact, we have a lot of maps that represent the same countries or regions but need different colours. I though that it will be good to have one svg with the geographica representation and a separate file for the colours. There was some intresting discussion on this but not accepted.
    • I think we will need to have some deeper discussion on the format for this kind of svg maps. I personally belive that it will be good to have some classes and features in the svg that can help automatic detection of specific elements or machine use for editing.
Sure this is not in line with your request but I hope this may help. Thanks Ikonact (talk) 08:19, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Ikonact. cmglee is the main creator of the map templates. Maybe he can tell us what he thinks of your maps.
I have a question. Is there a way to paste in a list of states and values into your maps. To make maps with the data on the maps. That is what is possible with cmglee maps. It is very easy to do. Just need the list. A good set of colors is already in the map. Those colors can be changed.
cmglee can probably adapt this data map template method to other countries and their subnational areas (states, provinces, etc.). --Timeshifter (talk) 17:53, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
That's a useful tool, @Ikonact: Though I prefer scripting, I can see other editors preferring a GUI. Will it have a way to save a draft and resume editing, or to load someone else's map to make changes?
I didn't see your proposal in 2017, and would very much welcome having SVG files referencing or transcluding other files. I've been using a hack using systemLanguage so that a single SVG can generate different thumbnails, e.g. for each tower's article:
A limitation is that all variants must already be in file. Can we build on this idea? Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 09:39, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
@Cmglee: I remember, I have seen your svg with the towers and I find it a good idea. I find it a twist as the purpose of the systemLanguage is different but I agree it is a good work around. The main issue is that this will not work for multiple elements - if you wish to highlight several states on a map for example. I will be glad if we can propose something that make sense. I have to admit I am playing solo for the moment :-) Ikonact (talk) 13:33, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, @Ikonact: Ian Furst (talk · contribs) contacted me five years ago to create SVG that can selectively show any combination of selected medical symptoms, and we encountered the same problem. I ended up creating a template using en:template:location_map+ to make something like this. It might work for some niche use-cases. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 15:47, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
@Timeshifter: I have not done pasting list of states and values in teh code for this map but it is planned and I can work on this. I agree that this is useful. Ikonact (talk) 13:28, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

    Request

Another user ("Quangkhanhhuynh") alerted me to some errors with the above map and I would like to request a number of changes to this map based on this file in the National Library of France:

For one, the Province of Hà Nam (河南) and the Province of Phúc Yên (福安) are missing from this map. That is, they are missing from the current map at the Wikimedia Commons but are depicted on the Gallica map dated 1937.

Another mistake I made at the map is listing most of the Province of Đồng Nai Thượng (同狔上) as the Province of Đà Lạt (多樂), in reality the vast majority of the area depicted as "Đà Lạt (多樂)" on the map is actually "Đồng Nai Thượng (同狔上)". Meanwhile, the city of Đà Lạt (多樂) and some surrounding areas were a separate area as can be found on the Gallica map.

Additionally, the Province of Pleiku (坡離俱) did not yet exist in the year of 1937 and should be completely removed with its territory going to the Province of Kon Tum (崑嵩).

Furthermore, I made the following mistakes in taking the names from the French administration rather than that of the Southern Dynasty:

    • Nha Trang (芽莊) -> Khánh Hòa (慶和)

Sau nhiều lần thay đổi, sáp nhập, chia tách để thành lập các đơn vị hành chính trên vùng Tây Nguyên, ngày 24 tháng 5 năm 1932, theo Nghị định Toàn quyền Đông Dương lúc này tỉnh Pleiku được thành lập." (From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, France gradually established a governing apparatus on Gia Lai land. After many changes, mergers, and separations to establish administrative units in the Central Highlands, on May 24th, 1932, according to the Decree of the Governor General of Indochina, Pleiku province was established.) - "Gia Lai". The Province of Pleiku (坡離俱) did exist in 1937 and the Gallica map didn't list it. Regarding that missing character, When I past it in as font TakaoPGothic it gives me nothing. I have looked in my font manager and there I can see that character, but when I copy and past it it's the same result nothing.
Should we try another font from this list that works here at wikimedia --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung You are the requester here so you have to tell me what to change. Hope you understand @Quangkhanhhuynh, it can get very confusing for me otherwise. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:19, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: , Draft 2 (two) looks amazing 🤩, it's odd that the character does appear well in the current version but not the improved version. Maybe it's just a display issue on my mobile telephone. But the draft shows all the improvements that have to be made, the only issue is in fact the Traditional Chinese character "沱". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
I didn't see Khanh's comments when I wrote the above, my bad. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:27, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung I opened my previous version (the one now uploaded) and in that original svg file the same character is missing. The only thing I can guess right now is that I have updated my computer and the tool (Inkscape) I work in and that the issue could be there. Could you give me some other fonts från that list that I can try, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
I only have a mobile device at the moment, but I think that it probably should work with the font called "AR PL UKai TW". -- Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:50, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I can't test it on Inkscape myself, but this looks like the font used by Ms. Phương Anh in the original SVG map on which this is based, so if I would wager a guess I'd say that the "AR PL UKai TW" font will probably properly display it. Oddly enough, I do see the character on my mobile telephone, so it could just be a display issue with your computer, as I assume that the Google Drive File is a screenshot of what you see on your device. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:52, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en @Donald Trung I saw that Thanh Hóa (清化) is missing 清 and Bắc Kạn (北𣴓) is missing 𣴓 (my phone doesn't have a proper rendering support and I see a box, I think that the reason why it's missing). That's the errors of the file or my phone's fault? Khanh ( talk | contribs | CA | vi ) 14:12, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung Is this correct? Should I change all Chinese to this font? --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 17:04, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
    ┌───────────────────────────┘
Goran tek-en, yes, this is correct, though I still think that maybe the display issue in your Google Drive files may be due to your device and not due to the font. Could you upload your 2nd (second) draft to the file page and then revert it? Because I suspect that it might just be an issue with your device and not with the map itself. Otherwise just use tje font you've used,
I think that the map is mostly done, other than the fact that one district is missing from one province as Khanh pointed out above.
Thank you very much for all your trouble, excuse me for not having all the necessary information during my first (1st) request. 😕 -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:22, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Quangkhanhhuynh, I do see the "Thanh" (清) on my Google Pixel 4A device using the Ecosia browser. As for the "Kạn" (𣴓), when I use my wife's Microsoft Windows 11 laptop 💻 with Microsoft Edge I can see it, but I can't see it on my Google Pixel 4A device with the Ecosia browser. Your device and browser affects what you can and can't see. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:19, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Quangkhanhhuynh, no, the Manchu Qing Dynasty never laid any claims to the islands, the Japanese Empire did, the Republic of China claimed it as a response to Japan. The Nguyễn Dynasty also didn't explicitly claim (but did colonise) them until the French made them declare them as "sovereign territory" (See: The Bulletin of the Southern Dynasty in the National Language, 1938, issue N⁰ 8), the French placed these markers with the text "Republique Française - Empire d'Annam - Archipel des Paracels", but the earliest explicit claims were in June 1938 when these became occupied by the French as a part of the territorial dispute with the Japanese. Before that, they were implicitly claimed.
Notice the language used by the Nguyễn Dynasty "Decree N⁰ 10 29-02-Bảo Đại 13", basically "we have claimed these islands since the previous Dynasty", this is true as they administratively belonged to them for centuries, but the European concept of "sovereignty" was only introduced to them in the 1930's. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 05:15, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
I was wrong, apparently The Qing did claim them, explicitly in 1885 the earliest, mostly as a response to the French. But still, the Nguyễn Dynasty also has laid claim to these islands for its entire existence. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 05:28, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung but all the old maps I could find doesn't have two islands on it. Can you explain? Khanh ( talk | contribs | CA | vi ) 09:05, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
Quangkhanhhuynh, they were claimed territories and as the above Wikipedia article notes, the French claimed them as long as they had a protectorate over Annam and Tonkin, I mostly asked it to harmonise it with "File:Nguyen Dynasty, administrative divisions map (1838).svg", which lists both archipelagos as a part of the Nguyễn Dynasty. As it's a disputed territory, I don't feel strongly either way to their inclusion or exclusion, as multiple countries (The Republic of China, the United States of America, and the Japanese Empire) also claimed them as their own territories. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:16, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

Seriously both of you @Donald Trung @Quangkhanhhuynh, keep your discussion somewhere else, this is a graphic map request nothing else. If you add discussion text here I don't know what is for me and I don't read your internal stuff, it's totally confusing for me.

    Yeah, me too. Khanh ( talk | contribs | CA | vi ) 14:07, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

    • New version uploaded, information also updated.
    • If you are happy with this please put the code "{{section re.solved|1=~~~~}}" (without the ".") on this request so it can be archived, thanks. ✓ Done
If you ever need edits on stuff I made you can just contact me directly as I have more material than the uploaded file so it's easier for me to edit than for someone else. Also if any of you think I can help you with something just ping me, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:14, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
If the uploaded file "Draft Dynasti-4."? Because in the 4th (fourth) draft I don't see the floating "沱", but I do see it in the current uploaded file, maybe you accidentally uploaded "Draft-Dynasti-3". -- Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 15:57, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung It's really strange, I can't see it in my original file and not if I download the uploaded svg, completely sick.
But I think I found in another way although I can't see it, looks fine now, sorry my bad. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 16:20, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
It's fine now. Thank you for all your hard work. 😃👍🏻 Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:23, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung If this is finished, please, as the requester, put out the code "{{section re.solved|1=~~~~}}" (without the ".") on this request so it can be archived, thanks --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:55, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
I placed it at the top of the section, some people prefer to see it at the top rather than the bottom, when I added it to the bottom at "Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop", some editors would remove it and then place a new one at the top. Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 14:12, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
@Donald Trung Sorry, didn't see it, I'm more for placing it at the bottom but that's just a personal thing, all well. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 14:44, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
I also prefer it at the bottom, the people who like it at the top seen to do a lot of "cleaning" (removing templates and information) when they move them. Anyhow, it will be archived after a few days. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 14:47, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Map of the route from the Varangians to the Greeks

Article(s): en:Route from the Varangians to the Greeks

    Request
I would like for the original image of 2017 (uploaded by Minnekon) to be restored, but with en:Truso in the correct place (namely on the right bank of the Vistula, as Artur Andrzej tried to move it in 2023). The issue with the 2023 correction is that the overall quality of the image has degraded. I tried to fix the problem myself by editing the 2017 original and moving Truso to the right bank in Microsoft Paint, but I got much the same result as Artur Andrzej in 2023. It probably has something to do with the .gif format that I do not understand. If anyone can make a higher-quality image in any other kind of format (like .svg), perhaps even with a different underlying map altogether, but showing much the same information, that would also be appreciated; I'm not tied to this image in particular. --Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:58, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Article(s): List of first-level administrative divisions by area (for example)

    Request
Hello, having initially posted this request on the Commons:File requests page, it was suggested that I redirect here instead. Is it possible to create maps in the "SVG locator maps (location map scheme)" format for the States of Somalia? From what I see, this is one of the rare administrative subdivisions that does not yet have a map in this format. It would therefore be in addition to the regions of Somalia, which have their own category. --Ellicrum {bablute [...]} 13:24, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
