Image is said to have been shot in 2011, which is impossible, as one of the depicted died in 1997. In addition, I found the same photo posted to a presentation at http://www.payer.de/kommkulturen/kultur13412.htm, which was created in year 2001 and in which this image is sourced to http://www.pondyarchdiocese.org.in/in_photogallery.htm with the access date July 20th, 2001. As the source site is no longer available, we can't be sure about the true copyright status. This file was initially tagged by Moumou82 as Copyvio (copyvio) and the most recent rationale was: suspicious as uploader's contributions are copyvios
Converted by me to DR as the mere suspicion is insufficient for copyvio-speedy. However, the same image in somewhat higher resolution had been uploaded as File:Béni Khalled06 08.jpg in October 2008 by the same uploader. It has been deleted in early 2010 for missing source/permission, probably due to the entry "Source=travail personnel". -- Túrelio (talk) 13:45, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This was first published in 1936 by a US official, that doesn't take away the derivative work nature of this photograph Vera (talk) 12:44, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I assume since the photograph was taken by someone in the employ of the United States Government (which makes it public domain), you are referring to the posters in the photograph? How then do you distinguish between the rather generic posters in these photographs, say, and the poster to be seen in the lower right hand corner of this Walker Evans photograph, which is accepted as Public Domain? File:Segregated_cinema_entrance3.jpg MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:42, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
de minimis, that poster is a negligable part of the photograph, these photographs here were intended to get the posters. --Vera (talk) 23:18, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're probably right: the estimable Walker Evans was simply snapping these shots to rip off the wonderful visuals of the posters. Your hair-splitting is skating on thin ice. MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:29, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
While I have a moderate contempt for folks running around looking for perfectly decent photos to delete, I would argue that in these photos the (possibly) copyrighted images are the focus of the photo, where in File:Segregated cinema entrance3.jpg the copyright image is not the focus of the photo and the principle of de minimis applies. Therefore, unless I'm missing something, the photos are indeed derivative works. – JBarta (talk) 01:19, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The question comes down to what is the focus of the photo, the buildings, the posters, the fact the posters are covering the building on this farm (which is why the worker was taking the photo in the first place, something comparable to landlord / tenant pictures) or the single poster which is well beyond the threshold of originality. The other posters are not copyrightable, they are too simple. If the purpose was to make an image of the single lion photo, it would be a problem, if someone crops to that image it is a problem. If the other posters, all of them, plus the building they cover, and to a lesser extent the other building and the farm always remain included it is ok. I think the viewer taking the image out of it's historical context, which is something we can't control, can have an effect on what the photo appears to be intended for.
The cropping that has been done so far seems reasonable enough, but returning it to include the sides of the film is a coin-flip. Should be templated with a no-crop warning though. I have no opinion on keep or delete for this one. Penyulap 13:40, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed File:Hells Angels Mural - Southampton.jpg. Someone should put that up. What is the FOP for grafitti in the UK?

Out of scope: this image has no encyclopedic value. This image might have a certain personal value High Contrast (talk) 16:52, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scope is not based on "encyclopedic" value, that would be a Wikipedia policy, rather than a Commons one. Perhaps you would like to amend the deletion request?
Keep Commons has very few images that relate to the changes (globally) in dealing with harassment of women in the military and as seen during military campaigns. The fact that there are service personnel with their careers based on addressing this need is useful for the educational purpose of illustrating the topic.
BTW, page moved to a far more meaningful name File:Sexual Harassment-Assault Response and Prevention representatives with the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division 130325-A-WD324-004.jpg. Thanks -- (talk) 16:56, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, any file on Commons must be realistically useful for an educational purpose (per COM:PS). This particurarly image shows Tommica Hewlett (left) and Misty Cady - this image could be realistically educationally reasonable if it would show them e.g. at work. That they are dealing with harassment of women is only recognizable due to the image caption/description. --High Contrast (talk) 17:03, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed, "useful for an educational purpose" != "must be of encyclopedic value". :-)
I think this is rather subjective area. They are photographed in service, at work. If they were sitting at their desks, or on the phone, rather than standing I guess you might be happier, but this is a fine distinction. Thanks -- (talk) 17:07, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of suspicious uploads: derivative works of modern applied artworks of unknown origin; scans of Soviet envelopes (Template:PD-RU-exempt doesn't apply) with probably copyrighted pictures.

Why would the copyright status of official Soviet first-day covers differ from the copyright status of Soviet stamps? -- AnonMoos (talk) 11:23, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Afaik postcards and pictures on envelopes are not PD-RU-exempt. --A.Savin 11:47, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
However, an official first-day cover is just as much issued by a government agency as a stamp is, and I don't see anything in the wording on that template which would lead me to believe that they have a different legal status. Please look up "First-day cover" (though the English Wikipedia article isn't too useful in this respect)... AnonMoos (talk) 13:19, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AnonMoos, You do not understand, suppression of the first day is not removed. But these images contain original autor`s work. General Post Office of USSR and not be exempted from these envelopes copyright.--Agent001 (talk) 22:27, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't understand what you're trying to say. Both a stamp and a first-day cover are official documents released publicly by agencies of the Soviet government. I don't see anything in the wording of Template:PD-RU-exempt which differentiates between the two. AnonMoos (talk) 04:11, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
--A.Savin 23:53, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • A.Savin, тов. AnonMoos действительно не понимает о чем речь. Почтовые марки наклеенные на художественные открытки с рисунками и фотографиями не освобождают их (открытки) от АП - вот, что ему надо втолковать. --Agent001 (talk) 16:22, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kept and Deleted

  • First, please do not nominate 444 images for deletion unless they are closely related. These are from different countries and have different subjects. It is very hard to discuss or close such huge requests.
  • Second, please do not remove the {{Delete}} tag from images before the DR is closed -- it slows down the closing process.
  • I tried to distinguish between those covers that were obviously supplied by the Post Office, and therefore have the same status as stamps, and those that may have been supplied by third parties, as is sometimes the case with first day covers. I kept the former and deleted the latter.
  • I also deleted all of the Mongolian images, as none appeared to have any permission from the photographer.

No uses, no sources and superseded by wikicharts. Cannot find any similar charts on the relevant pages on Wikipedia or references to this data NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 18:23, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not used is not a reason for deletion. Can you point out what this has been superceded by? As far as lack of sources for the data, you can always use Template:References missing. – JBarta (talk) 19:30, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's been superseded by embedded data charts which are the preferred method of displaying data of this kind, as it says on the image's page itself. Following the trail, the source appears to be this page which doesn't contain any data corresponding to this graph. I can't see it being used anywhere, as I can't find any similar images on the relevant pages on enwiki. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 20:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So this particular pie chart hasn't been superceded by anything and the data is questionable. Keep and tag with Template:References missing. – JBarta (talk) 21:36, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this photograph was taken before 1946, and the author is unknown, then the author may still be alive, and as a result the image is not in the public domain, sadly! Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 17:53, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Image is unlikely already free. Probably shot in 1940s and protected for 70 years after the death of the photographer. Neither the uploader, who has self-licensed it, nor the source is the creator of this photo. -- Túrelio (talk) 21:12, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

this image could be used to illustrate the Elvis Presley article,
the Elvis article has educational value,
so the image must have educational value too right ?
Wrong, the image itself has to have the educational,
not the article on the subject. Penyulap 15:20, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This image is an out of scope, self-published work with no educational or encyclopedic value. There are plenty of other "Everybody draw Mohammed Day" images, but this one in particular regurgitates hate from an anti-Islam website that it is also guilty of promoting by containing a written-out url. You can read more on the founder of this website here: [6]. I struggle to understand why this image has not already been deleted from Wikipedia Commons. Aetius (talk) 18:10, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: It's in-used on multiple articles. Sadly, racism and Islamaphobia is real and this article is being used on Wikipedia and other projects to depict that. If one wishes to renominate this file with another policy-based rationale, they are able to do so. I will defer to other administrators to review it. Unless I'm missing something, none of these images are linked from sister projects. At least the global usage tool says so. --Conti| 20:45, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They're used in galleries at various projects, which for some reason doesn't show up on the usage tools in the same way. They're also part of a category from which users can select different images for different galleries to their liking. -- Cirt (talk) 20:47, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have some examples? --Conti| 21:04, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you check, you will see that any image linked to from the "gallery" function doesn't show up in the manner you are describing, unfortunately, even if they are in use. -- Cirt (talk) 21:37, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you, I'm just trying to find out where these images are used in our sister projects. --Conti| 21:52, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have to believe me, if you check for yourself you'll see this issue of images that are used in galleries that unfortunately don't show up as being used, even when they most certainly are. -- Cirt (talk) 03:33, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we're just talking past each other here, so I'll try again: I am trying to find the galleries in which this image is used. I genuinely do not know how to do that. Since you say above that the image is used, you must know where. Therefore I asked you to link me to one of these galleries. --Conti| 11:13, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See the link, above. Everybody Draw Mohammed Day. Please notice how images used in the gallery don't always show up as used in the usage tool? -- Cirt (talk) 16:41, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
